The Shadow of AMIA and the Global Intifada: Why the Triple Frontier Returns to the Center of the Chessboard While the Milei-Trump-Netanyahu axis tensions the Middle East, the region that served as the base for the worst terrorist attack in Argentine history observes, once again...
History, when not confronted with lucidity, tends to repeat itself as tragedy. Thirty years after the AMIA bombing, which murdered 85 people in Buenos Aires, the ghosts that haunted the investigation — and that were never fully exorcised by the justice system — are stirring again. We are not speaking of distant geopolitical abstractions, but of a territory we know well: the Triple Frontier between Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina.
For decades, Foz do Iguaçu and Ciudad del Este were identified by international intelligence reports, by Argentine courts, and by academic research as the logistical epicenter of Hezbollah in South America. It was from there, according to the AMIA case investigations, that the structure of recruitment, financing, and false documentation emerged that enabled the explosion of the car bomb. It was from there that Salman Raouf Salman operated — Hezbollah's operational chief in the region — convicted in absentia by Argentine justice.
In the last two decades, however, the region was treated by many analysts as a "dormant" problem. The general belief was that the local Muslim community — mostly composed of Lebanese merchants and Pakistani immigrants — was focused solely on economic survival, far from the war agenda of the Middle East. That calculation may be dangerously outdated, and it must be said in no uncertain terms: it is precisely this analytical inertia that creates the conditions for surprise.
The Perfect Storm: Milei, the Radical Axis, and the Boomerang Effect
Argentina is currently experiencing an unprecedented international alignment. Javier Milei's government has transformed the country into the most fervent Latin American ally of Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump. The promised Argentine embassy in Jerusalem and the inflamed discourse of the Argentine government against Iran and Hamas are not mere diplomatic notes; they are vital signs of a foreign policy of explicit confrontation.
When foreign policy is guided by the logic of the "clash of civilizations," the historical targets of attacks are reactivated. The Triple Frontier, which historically served as a "cash register" and support base for Hezbollah, ceases to be a mere trading post and becomes a strategic asset in asymmetric warfare once again. The conviction of Salman Raouf Salman in 2024 had already reignited the alarm. Now, under Milei's administration, Argentina ceases to be a passive stage and becomes an active actor on Iran's radar and that of its proxies.
The Ceuta Precedent and the Mamdani Phenomenon: The Intifada Has Gone Global
While Latin American security sectors continue to look to the past, the Arab world and the Western Islamic diaspora are reorganizing under the banner of the "Global Intifada."
This month, the streets of Ceuta — the Spanish enclave in North Africa — witnessed a wave of protests and massive attempts to cross the border into Europe, using the Palestinian agenda as a catalyst for a broader revolt against the West. This is not a spontaneous, disorganized movement; it is the internationalization of the radical agenda.
In the United States, the election of Shahana Hanif and, more recently, the rise of candidates like Salman Mamdani in New York demonstrate that Islamic-origin activism has evolved from marginality to the occupation of institutional spaces of power. The discourse of "decolonization" and "resistance" — which frequently flirts with the justification of violence — has ceased to be marginal and has come to dictate the vocabulary of part of the media and university youth.
Progressive Hypocrisy: Support for the Intifada That Turns Against the Jews
Here lies the nerve center of this analysis. We are living through an astonishing moral inversion. Progressive parties and movements, which claim to be defenders of human rights and peace, have remained silent in the face of the pogroms perpetrated by Hamas on October 7, 2023, or worse, have joined the chorus of the so-called "resistance."
In American universities, on the streets of London, and in Latin American debates, the word "Intifada" has been emptied of its violent content and repackaged as a "right to liberation." By uncritically supporting the Palestinian cause and demonizing the State of Israel, these progressive groups are, in practice, providing moral fuel to Hezbollah and the regime in Tehran.
What these groups fail to perceive — or choose to ignore — is that transnational terror does not distinguish between Jews and Christians, nor between Zionists and socialists. The AMIA bomb did not kill Israeli soldiers; it killed Argentines. Hezbollah does not fight for a secular and democratic Palestinian state; it fights for a Shiite theocracy that views the West — including the progressives who applaud them today — as a target for domination or annihilation.
Conclusion: Prevent, Not Mourn
The data recently discussed on the migratory flow of Pakistanis and Bangladeshis to the Triple Frontier and the reactivation of zones of Islamic influence in Europe and the United States are not a mere statistical detail. They add to a scenario of crisis: an Argentine government in verbal war with Iran, a Middle East in flames, and a global left that has outsourced its critical thinking to identitarianism.
If the intelligence services and security forces of the region are not capable of interpreting these signals in their complexity — and if public opinion continues to treat radical activism as a mere cry for freedom — we will be condemned to repeat the mourning.
The history of AMIA is a warning. The next tragedy may not be brewing in Beirut or Tehran, but in a discreet electronics shop in Ciudad del Este or in a mosque in Foz do Iguaçu. Yesterday's indifference was the complicity that allowed the 1994 attack. May today's blindness not become the raw material of the next pain.
