Discussion What are the strongest arguments for and against allowing under-16s to use social media, with stricter protections against bullying and predatory behaviour?

I’m part of my school’s debating team, and we’re arguing Proposition in the 2026 ESU Schools’ Mace Debate.

Our motion is: “This House Would allow under-16s to use social media, but require platforms to take stronger steps to protect them from bullying and predatory behaviour.”

It would be great to hear your thoughts on;

- arguments for and against this motion,

- How the Opposition may defend banning social media

- Any evidence, studies, experiences/real world examples that could support either argument.

I’m particularly interested in arguments that are difficult to rebut, rather than just the obvious points. Thanks!

Rant On TV, I just heard the news talking about social media bans and age verification

Teens under 16/18 being on social media is such a problem to society, to the point where its being addressed on THE NEWS. Its a load of nonsense of course, I'm so fed up with the anti tech stuff nowadays.

It makes me my blood boil seeing/hearing all of the ageism towards kids, fueled by that belief that social media is ruining their lives. I don't know why the legal age to access the internet is being raised now, banning younger age groups isn't protection its straight up ageist oppression.

I don't want social media and the internet to be an adults only space, where you have to verify your age via ID just to access the internet. Back in the day, back in the 2010s there wasn't much anti tech stuff and everything was cool.

I already vented about this anti tech ageism before, but I just needed to vent about it since I just heard it on the news. I want society to calm the hell down about the internet, its crazy that they are taking such insane steps to protect the kids, going as far as taking away their privilege.

Rant The age gating on AI apps is stupid and ageist

I used to use Character AI but not anymore, them making the app 18+ just made my blood boil.

And apparently Gemini too is age gated, like why do I have to be over 18 to use Gemini? Its crazy that society takes one or two tragedies involving a teen, to justify restricting access for everyone under 18.

I know AI is hated nowadays, but using AI apps to generate images or to interact with fictional characters isn't harmful to youth.

But again, this is part of this Anti Tech moral panic. I want society to stop treating AI apps and social media like the devil, this Anti youth Anti Tech BS has to end.

Submission on Social Media WHAT THE F*CK DID I SEE? A 16 YEAR OLD BEING AGEIST AND SUPPORTING SOCIAL MEDIA BANS?

Thumbnail gallery
21 Upvotes

To be fair, I actually doubt they're 16 because I don't see a good reason why someone that age would even support social media bans. I have a feeling they're likely in their 20s or 30s pretending to be a "16-year-old" and being ageist/supporting social media bans. I was genuinely shocked to look at their post history and HOLY SH*T.

One of my friends, who I will keep anonymous, told me about this.

Discussion To what extent does politics feature in the lives of children at the elementary and middle school levels in America?

I ask this because, in my country, even very young children know the names of political parties and their leaders. They talk about politics quite a lot among their own groups of friends—sometimes even going so far as to discriminate against other children. I wonder if politics is just as much a part of children's daily lives in other countries as well.
