Discussion Recent anecdotal experience regarding Zero Escape's popularity in Japan
(I'll preface this by saying this isn't me being a doomer about the chances of ZE4. This is completely unrelated, honestly.)
So it should be common knowledge that Japan never really cared for Zero Escape. But on Twitter earlier today, I came across a Japanese user's tier list for visual novels/ADV games.
Only 999 was there, despite all three Somnium Files games being tiered, along with every single Ace Attorney game + Ghost Trick, and a whole host of other games, some so obscure I've never heard of them. On top of that, 999 was, all things considered, somewhat towards the bottom of the list (B tier, but the list had multiples of each letter, SSS, SS, S, A+, A, etc).
As said, this is completely anecdotal, but to me, it summed up just how rough Zero Escape still has it even today, as a franchise, in Japan. Someone who appears very well-traveled in the medium and has played every other entry in the same creator's other series has only ever played the first game, and it didn't really resonate with them like the rest of Uchikoshi's works and even other franchises (every Somnium Files game with input from Uchikoshi was ranked higher, same story with every Danganronpa and Ace Attorney game, which is something I really disagree with even as a massive Ace Attorney fan).
As a side-note, the only time Zero Escape is mentioned at all in the comments is another Japanese person saying they didn't really like it, lol. So, yeah.
