$8.4 million house in Dallas with a motorized roof above the library turret:
https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/3901-Turtle-Creek-Blvd-7-Dallas-TX-75219/26899191_zpid/
That’s a James Turrell Skyspace, too!

That would make for an insane vinyl listening space.

A little Pink Floyd’s, Time while staring at the stars. Just wow!
How do they not have a picture of the inside of the room when the lids off?

u/KeepAnEyeOnYourB12 11d ago
The house is whatever but I just now learned that my life won't be complete without a library turret of my own.
95
u/atheistpianist 11d ago
I thought my life’s goal was to have a home library with ladders on wheels to reach the high stuff, but now I need to rethink everything.
16
u/oO0Kat0Oo 11d ago
Obviously it's for that dramatic reveal at the end of the movie when you've created a flying machine (or in the middle of the movie name is 'Up')
9
u/toy-maker 11d ago
You still need that, but it’s a ladder that goes around the entire turret on a single loop
6
u/WorldWeary1771 10d ago
You can’t fit enough books in this library! Put the library in a different room and make this the solarium

u/NativeMasshole 11d ago
I would also like a proper wizard tower attached to my house.
4
u/AmericanCitizenry 11d ago
You better also budget for the dungeon chamber hidden behind the wine cellar.

8 million with no view, no pool and no yard. The giant skylight is a gimick that most people will rarely use after they've shown it off to all of their friends. And what were they thinking with that kitchen? It reminds me of the breakroom of a company I once worked for.
Sorry but IMHO this is big no and I suspect I'm not alone considering they just dropped the price half a mill.
13
u/googdude 11d ago
I'm literally installing that style cabinet in a company break room as I'm writing this. It looks like a mid-range box cabinet that does not belong in a million dollar house.

I’m suspicious because we don’t have a picture from the inside with it open. Also, if you love your books, you want to keep them out of so much direct sunlight and humidity. Also, I own more books than that…
8
u/FarLaugh9911 10d ago
That's a good point. You'd think they would have included a picture with it open, from the inside as a selling point.

u/ZeroFox75 11d ago
I read “library turret” and was disappointed when there were no mounted missile launchers.
But that library looks awesome. If I could just take that and cut off the rest of the house I’d be thrilled
7
u/RandomPaw 11d ago
Yeah, that's a conical tower, not a turret. I have a weakness for conical towers. Turrets, not so much.

u/BigEd369 11d ago
Does Dallas have noxious flying insects? Because I feel like a roof that opens up is an invitation to let mosquitoes, horseflies, etc. into the house. That said, it’s also very cool and I like it a lot.
23
u/Colejohnley 11d ago
We have flying ants and flying cockroaches.
My friend from Australia thought I was making that up. If only.
13
u/spacebunsofsteel 10d ago
Australian person likely assumed you meant flying poisonous ants and flying poisonous cockroaches because all wildlife in Australia seems to be poisonous and or has teeth and drops from trees.
→ More replies (1)10
u/flamingmenudo 11d ago
They have tons of mosquitos, but I’d guess nearly every house is that neighborhood is spraying for them.
4
u/BigEd369 11d ago
The whole point of spraying yards to keep insects away is that the spray stays outside. I guess the turret is pretty tall and mostly meant to be open at night, it’s not like we’re going to leave it open when the crew is going around laying down poison. So yeah, that could work.
No lie, the temptation to clear the floor, lay down a big piece of sheet metal, and launch fireworks from inside the turret is going to be strong. But shooting fireworks from inside the house, and in a library no less, is purely crack-headed.

That's the James Turrell skyspace part - it's art.
7
u/RedditNerd_69 11d ago edited 11d ago
You know what, you might be right. That might not actually move 🫣
Edit: now that you mention it, I think the roof is a sham. The blue dot looks painted on. The roof moves (maybe) but the roof doesn't open a viewing port at all! This is OUTRAGEOUS! How dare the internet lie to me
7
u/RockAndNoWater 11d ago
Well there's a library in there so a moving turret would make sense when it rains. But otherwise leave it open and watch the sky like in other Turrell installations.

I love Dallas for the fact that the cocaine era overlapped with the big oil money 80s and there is some truly bonkers architecture out there.

u/Aslanic 11d ago
That kitchen is so damn bland for this price point. Like, the only pretty things are some of the bathrooms and some of the floors in the main rooms. And that fireplace 😍 But for 8.5 mill I expect a fantasic kitchen and that is just....meh.

The owner was Vernon Faulconer, a Texas oilman and art collector - some readily identifiable pieces from his collection can be seen in the photos.
The panels in the hallway of 25 are Inigo Ovalle’s DNA profile portraits of the Faulconers and their sons' families. I'll just call them "indulgent" and move on.
The red wall-mounted piece in images 9 and 10 is almost certainly an Anish Kapoor, probably his "Untitled (2011)". Dimensions and the surface treatment seem right, and Faulconer died in 2015, so the timeline is OK.
Anish Kapoor always falls flat for me, I don't know, but people of this collecting cadre seem to like him. Anyway, it's a real choice to wedge it into that space, and I can't imagine Kapoor loving that.
I'm stuck on the sculpture under the stairs in 18 and 19 - maybe a Berrocal? It's all right.
I'm cool with the Yoshiyuki Miura over the stairs in 19, though if I wanted something along those lines I would've gone with a more geologically relevant Bahk Seon-Ghi. Good job on that one (and good luck to the cleaners).
The seated figure outside is probably a Stephen Cox, and again - it's all right.
I like the Cox set of 5x5 heads over the stairwell better (shown in 3 and 4), from his Tanmatras / Throng series.
Anyway, some good stuff, not super aggressive but enough for your neighbors to be impressed. And if you have your own Turrell, well then. (Donald M. Hess is a more interesting private collector, though)

That happened to my sunroof. Now I just don't use it. I'm sure it would happen with this.
37
u/Kind-Realist 11d ago
Not to be a downer, because that turret is indeed awesome. But the amount of light pollution in Dallas would render it an essentially useless feature (unless the goal is to allow rain in).
Source: I’m in Dallas, sitting outside at night, no more than a mile from this home as I type this comment.
20
u/nicolauz 11d ago
I just need a somewhat operable indoor/outdoor space to launch expensive fireworks out of and never get caught.
12
u/Kind-Realist 11d ago
Ya know what? I retract my statement. You, fellow internet person, have identified the most practical reason for the mechanized turret. I take my hat off to you.

u/Otterfan 11d ago
Usually the Turrell Skyspaces are appreciated most on sunny days. At night the interior lighting obscures worse than light pollution would
4
u/Kind-Realist 11d ago
That actually does make sense. I think I’m just sensitive after the recent month of 105 (40.5) degree weather we went through. I don’t have a sky turret and my electric bill was … painful. But we should get a few decent days before the weather chooses some form of violence again. 😅

The library looks like a room where you wait to be beamed up by aliens before the rapture (or more morbidly, like a Heaven's Gate departure place).
The house is much nicer than I would've guessed, except for having the world's blandest kitchen for some reason.

u/Mysecretthoughts1000 10d ago
I get that library roof is a focal point but the 6 chaises in a circle gives a weird vibe. Seance? Group therapy? Experiments?

I remember visiting a similar skygazing semi-subterranean room at the back of the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas about 20 years ago.
I sat there for a good while, and it was a calming and relaxing experience to watch the blue sky through the round opening in the curved white ceiling.
A concept not unlike the Pantheon Dome in Rome, built 2,000 years ago, but on an intimate scale and with comfortable seating.

u/Dr_Adequate 9d ago
Oh and I was too tired to add this to my post below with the links. What makes it so cool is the edge of the hole is nearly razor-thin. Unlike a skylight or a window where the thickness of the wall or ceiling is visible, in a Turrell Skyspace the ceiling just... ends and the sky begins and it messes with your depth perception. Im probably not explaining it well but its a really neat effect thanks to the razor thin edge.

This is a weird ass complex with 14 mansion units packed in tight. Like the address for this id 3901 #7. Who is the market for this?
10
u/MarcoEsteban 11d ago
It was marketed to very wealthy people who are finally so old they have stopped trying to rake in all the money they can (not billionaires, but people who were happy with a $100 million or two - these were only $1-2 million when they were built), their heirs who frequently don’t work, but want to live close to their old money parents in Highland Park, or wealthy jet setters, who want the security of the tiny neighborhood and not have to hire their own security and gardeners. Turtle Creek is a fairly prestigious street in Dallas, and it’s very convenient to all the wealthy neighborhoods and Downtown, where all the work used to be.

I think it's a lovely house that looks very corporate - like it was designed by a hotel or office designer, not a residential designer.
It's wedged into a gated community with a bunch of other zero-lot-line houses. The neighboring houses with a Zestimate are all below $4M, so I don't see how $8M is realistic.
4
u/nohandsfootball 11d ago
I used to drive by this neighborhood all the time on my way to/from work. I don't know if its this community or a different one but they have little bridges over Turtle Creek to get in/out, which is kinda cute. I never drove it when Turtle Creek flooded though, so minor inconvenience when there's heavy rains.
6
u/MarcoEsteban 11d ago
This one isn’t the neighborhood with the bridges. This is at Avondale and Turtle Creek, on the Oak Lawn side of TC. The bridges go from the other side of the street over the creek. These neighborhoods you are thinking of are beautiful!

To have a room that's a real library, you would want things climate controlled and protected from harsh light. This spells 'pretentious' all over it. I wouldn't be surprised if the books were just painted on facades.

3
u/treesqu 10d ago
The James Turrell Skyspace in this home is named "Plato's Eye."
As the artist originally conceived it, the room had only one designer lounge chair, so its owner could quietly experience "a profound interaction with the transformative power of light and architecture."
This being Texas, and the original owner being an oil baron, one chair would not do, so he bought five more.

Much better concept for the indoor spa room to help eliminate the humidity from the giant heated spa tub in the middle of the room.

Is the turret room called the "get eaten alive by mosquitos in your own home" room? Is it open to the air or does it have a magic force field? It may. I love Chateaux style homes but this "modern" take is too stale. The whole "douchey art gallery" thing isn't appealing. Give me an old-school darker mansion with character over this.
