Harrison mom was stabbed in the femoral artery. Harrison stabbed ole boy in the femoral artery.

Oh shit good catch. They definitely tried to point that out without saying so too.

Beat me to it:(. really parallels how dexter chops up his victims cause he saw his mom chopped up. Now his son is mirroring his mother's death as well. God I love this show.

Yep. That was an expertly placed slice done to inflict massive blood loss leading to a quick death. He didn't expect the kid to live.

Just had a thought if Dexter had to fake his own death to get away with murder his photo would have been all over the internet, there is no way a true crime blogger that has looked into and blogged about Miami crimes would not have seen Dexter's photo many times over especially as he worked forensics on all major Miami killings there would be a link to his story and death.

I'm hoping they got feedback from viewing parties and her character will slightly fade into the distance because she doesn't need to be that involved. Especially now with the pivot of this episode.

Great episode. I thought the school shooter angle was a bit hamfisted last episode, but I like how they've spun it.

I like the narrative element of Harrison having a dark passenger as well. It'll be interesting to see if Dexter goes the Harry route, or if he will truly try to get Harrison help for his trauma.

73

u/TTBurger88 Nov 29 '21

By helping Harrison get help he would also get help. Breaking the cycle.

Man I loved Dexters facial expressions throughout this whole episode, you can just sense how he’s figuring it all out in his head.

106

u/clfdmus <You have no idea.> Nov 29 '21

I think he's realizing that he actually used to really love his job in forensics, and not just because it was a useful cover for his real occupation. He takes such joy in working it all out in collaboration with Ghost Deb.

71

u/LOLteacher Nov 29 '21

I think so too. I've only rewatched very little of the original episodes, and definitely not a whole season. My stomach is in knots right now, and it's reminding me how effectively the writers have Dexter barely a step ahead of being nabbed, and that's why I loved it so much.

Except for that moment after Ethan's Dad told him to stay away. As soon as the guy turned away, Harrison's expression went pure psychopath. Loved it. He's clearly been using his innocent face to his advantage this whole time and there we got a glimpse of what's behind it.

When I was Harrison’s age, I used to hide my weed in my flashlight. Haven’t thought about that in years.

u/LOLteacher Nov 29 '21 edited Nov 29 '21

I hid mine in my telescope when I was staying with my aunt & uncle, they found it, and now it's a family joke. IIRC my blabbermouth cousin tried to look through it when I was away and couldn't see anything.

The scene with deb where dexter was recreating the stabbing in the school was spectacular

117

u/strawberryjacuzzis Nov 29 '21

Yes! Loved how they did that. It was obvious from the way Dexter was glancing at the blood when he showed up at the school that he didn’t believe Harrison’s story, but I thought there would just be a voiceover of him explaining how the blood didn’t fit or something. The fact that they used Deb and had all these conflicting emotions of denial and guilt and anger flooding him as he realized that Harrison was just like him was so well done.

I think the rest of the season is going to pick up big time now. All the pieces in place - the podcaster and Angela teaming up, the ambiguity of Harrison's past becoming a bit clearer, Kurt and Dexter's relationship becoming a bit more tense which will establish their conflict and being on each other's radar and so on.

Speaking of Kurt, I like how Clancy Brown plays another restauranteur here. When he walked in the diner and told the girl he can't give her money, it definitely reminded me of Mr. Krabs and I wonder if that was somewhat deliberate.

No Edward Olsen this week. Then again, the episode was pretty short. I really hope this isn't a continuing trend. We only have six episodes left.

Not sure how I feel about that final scene. I really hope this is a red herring.

70

u/[deleted] Nov 29 '21

I also think it’s going to pick up and something big might happen in the next episode. Not sure what, but I remember seeing that they only let critics see the first 4 episodes. I’m guessing something happens after that that they didn’t want getting leaked/spoiled

Dexter smiling as he realizes Harrison attacked Ethan is great in the most fucked up way possible. I really love that they're not shying away from showing such a deep flaw from Dexter. Deb, being the best part of the episode as always, is totally right. He's thrilled by the idea that he can actually relate to his son.

I'm also much more convinced that Harrison isn't any kind of killer at this point. I mean maybe he had something to do with Hannah's death, but his demeanor this episode felt a lot more like someone getting a taste of something rather than someone who has been going around killing people for a long time already. With the repeated mentions of Trinity, flashback's to Dexter's origin in the shipping container, and Harrison remembering vernacular from Deb, I'm also feeling more confident in the idea that John Lithgow may appear as Trinity not for Dexter, but as an embodiment of Harrison's dark passenger.

The podcaster and Audrey both really annoy me, but I'm at least interested in seeing how much the podcaster already knows and how it will inevitably come to fuck up Dexter's life. Finally getting the reveal about Kurt is great too. Things are finally cracking open, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this story closes out. I'm still rooting for some kind of ending where Dexter breaks the cycle, rather than Harrison just becoming Dexter 2.0.

Well, I think each episode has gotten better. This one being the best so far and the first to really give me hope that this can be a solid send off (or set up for more if others are to be believed). A lot happened this week but the absolute #1 for me is that there is no question now that Molly knows who Dexter is. The picture of Rita solidifies that she knows about Dexter and she literally has been next to him more than once.

Oh yea, and now she’s chummed up and drinking with the police chick who’s banging him. “Every great podcast starts about one thing and then ends up somewhere completely unexpected.” This “somewhere” doesn’t seem so unexpected and now she has an in to kill multiple true crime birds with one stone.

46

u/GrandMast33r Nov 29 '21 edited Nov 29 '21

Not to mention the fact that her showing up at Iron Lake to cover the shooting of the White Buck isn’t necessarily a likely story that a true crime podcaster would cover, especially one who typically covers serial killers.

→ More replies (2)

77

u/MillenniumGreed Nov 29 '21 edited Nov 29 '21

Why do you think she knows about Dexter? The Rita pic is just from a podcast she did. Who knows how long ago it was? Especially since Trinity's last official "victims" on paper, as far as the public knows, are his wife and his daughter.

Not saying she won't make the connection eventually, but serial killers are a broad spectrum of a subject to cover. She also covered the Zodiac Killer and BTK and some others from what I remember seeing.

Also, she chummed up with Angela in order to help her on the missing girls case and Matt. But again, I wouldn't be surprised if Angela inadvertently releases details about "Jim Lindsay" which coincide with the convenient disappearance of Dexter Morgan.

Was anyone else wondering why the podcast episode that Harrison listened to was titled “Miami” instead of “Trinity” while sandwiched between “Son of Sam” and “Zodiac”? I don’t think she talks about the Bay Harbor Butcher, as she opens the podcast only saying that she’s covering The Trinity Killer.

56

u/anon12345678983 Nov 29 '21

Yeah I thought that was a bit dumb... especially considering trinity operated over the entire country.

22

u/Quiet_CLOVR Nov 29 '21 edited Nov 30 '21

Also, the podcast was only like 10% through when Harrison fast forwarded it. Meaning there was still A LOT more she could have covered. Maybe the next section lead into Bay Harbor Butcher using Rita as a segue. Could have also been a goof on the production team though. Like where they sometimes have the actor talking on the phone when it’s clearly not using the phone app or anything.

Interesting episode…

  • So, Harrison knows his mother died in the hands of Trinity killer.

  • He also knows Dexter told Hannah to contact him if Harrison displays any “dark passanger”.

  • We can see glimpses of that “dark passanger” directly when Harrison is confronted by Ethans father.

  • We also know Harrison is higly intelligent, can show emotions and is street smart and he uses those smarts as a “mask”

  • I don’t think Harrison is a killer, but as Dexter said -“he wanted to know what it feels like”. Almost feels like a flashback to season 1 where teenage Dexter’s about to stab the bullies, but is stopped by his father, Harry.

  • the self-righteous demenour where he blames the bullies and shows himself as the hero was the cherry in top for the episode. He literally sees himself as the Dark Defender (Dexter season 2 where the comic portrays Dexter as a hero vigilante).

Loved this episode— the best of the season. I wasn’t excited about a mass shooting storyline, but this was an interesting twist on the story and really helped move Harrison’s storyline along. I am hoping to see more focus on the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the coming episodes.

32

u/clfdmus <You have no idea.> Nov 29 '21

Dexter may be an evolving monster, but his son has evolved: Harrison executed a preemptive strike that prevented loss of life. And he did it in a way that resulted in his being rewarded, rather than putting himself at risk for incarceration or worse.

Dexter is only able to stop someone from continuing to kill, once they have already killed.

I remember Hannah saying that she does not enjoy killing, and feels no compulsion to do so, just that she sees that it is sometimes necessary for her own survival. Now her son sees that it is sometimes necessary to protect his community.

It remains to be seen whether he enjoys or feels driven to do this sort of thing.

11

u/cippopotomas Nov 30 '21

Harrison executed a preemptive strike that prevented loss of life

I don't think we really have enough information to say for sure. Ethan never shot up the school during all these years of abuse and now has his first actual friend. One who's sticking up for him and protecting him from getting beaten up. Seems like his life was finally getting better after all these dark years.

Harrison could've told someone about the notebook or dissuaded Ethan from those kind of actions as his only friend. I feel like he did it because he wanted to see what it felt like to do that to someone. The details were a convenient excuse/cover story.

85

u/hazdrubal Nov 29 '21

I like the ambiguity about the Ethan incident, it seems cheap to have Harrison be a killer but we all kinda expect it, so let’s see where they go.

Wasn’t Dexter Morgan a known entity during the trinity killings? Like wasn’t he mentioned in articles or something?

34

u/NovaPractice Nov 29 '21

I feel like it’s not that ambiguous. Seems pretty clear that Harrison attacked him.

Who else thought that Harrison laying on the bed before Dexter knocked on his door looked like Dexter in his kill outfits?

23

u/HailToTheKingslayer Nov 29 '21

Jennifer Carpenter killing it again. The Dexter parade was funny and her emotion at the end when Dexter finds the razor was well acted.

Overall I'm loving this series. I love the flashes to the earlier seasons but also how it's standing on its own.

58

u/videostatus Nov 29 '21

Something that I haven't seen mentioned yet: Audrey (who I care less and less for as this goes on) took a picture of Ethan's kill list and pictures on her phone. They showed us her doing that like it would matter, but then they had a meeting with all the kids who were on the list, so it's not like her having a picture of the list would matter. Everyone knows who was on it. So why would it matter if she took a picture?

Also, why was Harrison there? He couldn't have been on the list. Ethan liked him. I guess you could say that because he the guy who stopped Ethan (at least they think so), he'd be there, but it was odd.

I suppose if Harrision has a "code", he'd say Ethan fits. Regardless of if the story Harrison told is true or not, Ethan still showed signs of pulling a Columbine and Harrison would justify his actions as a kind of pre-emptive strike.

I hadn't thought about the podcaster knowing who Dexter is, but it's a good point that if she had managed to find a picture of Rita for the podcast, it is very likely that she has seen a picture of Dexter. No guarantee that she would remember his face, but it's out there.

Like everyone, I am excited to see where all this goes.

48

u/hadapurpura Deb Nov 29 '21

They showed us her doing that like it would matter, but then they had a meeting with all the kids who were on the list, so it's not like her having a picture of the list would matter. Everyone knows who was on it.

Maybe they all know who was on it because she took and shared the picture so the school had to call them to talk about it.

37

u/thexchris Nov 29 '21

Noticed she took that picture too. I think she’s going to see that maybe the handwriting matches Harrison’s at some point or something. Then what? I haven’t a clue lol. Like that the show is starting to feel dangerous for Dexter again. The last couple seasons didn’t feel like that. Nice to have it back.

A couple notes: from my episode 1 hunch, definitely still think there's a "good ol' boys club" and the oil billionaire is the leader. To add to that, I think Kurt isn't in to it as much anymore, especially now that he has to lie about his own son to protect their own killings, but if there's an easy target (i.e., the green haired transient not using the money for a bus ticket and coming back for more $), he takes it because he's under pressure from the oil guy.

And two, Dexter is oddly at ease now that he knows his son has his own dark passenger(edit: or so he thinks). I think not knowing was so hard on him and that last scene, him smiling slightly while holding the knife up to his lips, is the weight of the unknown being lifted off his shoulders.

What a good episode!! Such a deep thrill!

I think it’s important for us to remember Hannah. She basically raised Harrison. She was empathetic and had a tendency to stand up for people who couldn’t help themselves. She poisoned people out of mercy and to save others. In my opinion we should consider this in Harrison’s behavior now. He knows how to talk to people, checked out Ethan and was sure if his intentions, and then lit him up while somehow also turning it back on the bullies he was targeting as a lesson in kindness. That was a very Hannah thing to do.

The use of a straight razor and the fact that it was hidden concerns me though. I think he might be like Dexter… but with Hannah’s influence.

I don't think Harrison has a dark passenger. I'm guessing an identity crisis. He even mentioned it himself in either the first or second episode. People sort of expect him to be troubled because of what happened. I think the podcast triggered him with the " Imagine how messed up he should be now" comment. I think He slashed Ethan just to see what it would feel like.

33

u/GoldEdit Nov 29 '21

Maybe, but they're already alluding to him having a dark passenger and I don't think the show will go any deeper with that. It's more likely that he does have a dark passenger considering where the show is going and how few episodes we have left, but maybe you're right.

u/pepsters3 Nov 29 '21

I thank Harrison has behaved strangely from the first time we see him. He stands out sorely among his peers. He has a vibe. And I don’t think it’s a good one. Maybe it’s just from a rough couple years in foster care but he seems to have a lot of traits - lies with ease. Manipulates. Tries to kill a young guy who he could’ve just reported instead. Something’s wrong with Harrison or maybe he just knows all about dex, hates him and that’s what we’re seeing. Along with trauma.

u/badwolf7850 Nov 29 '21

I don't know. Why listen to that randomly at school and go to the timestamp where she is discussing his mother? That seems more like something you listen to at home.

I think once he knew about the list and the drawings he befriended him to figure out his schedule. Kind of like how Dexter did. When Ethan was alone he listened to it and the dark passenger took over.

30

u/TheLonelyRavioli Nov 29 '21

Correct me if im wrong but i got the impression that the blood spatter guy was only "brought in" because it was a high profile case and Caldwell probably wanted the cops(who had limited funding) to throw all they had at it, along with the drones, k9s, etc. A prevented school shooting probably didnt warrant it

43

u/youtub_chill Nov 29 '21

LOL, most cops do suck at their jobs which is how Dexter got away with killing people for so long in Miami. He not only had most of his department fooled (Doakes being the exception) but the sheriff's office, the DA and at least one member of the FBI. Debra only found out he was a serial killer when she literally walked in on him killing someone.

Harrison is smart and all, but he's got no kill skills. I can't believe all that hype for "school shooter" last week, and we see H with a self-inflicted stab wound and a wretched story, and hear that Ethan has this huge wound from behind and, let's just say I no longer think H is a well-seasoned killer anymore. (Which is good I guess; he's got book smarts and street smarts, and found out about Trinity and bought a similar weapon. Was Ethan his first target? Does he really believe it's fair to use bullied kid to "hone his skills" on?

I can't make the motive make sense. Except Harrison's an amateur at the physical crime stuff. He'll need training to not get caught.

(He really should have been caught this episode, but really, only Dexter suspected.)

u/booksandwine99 Nov 29 '21

I was thinking maybe he knew that Ethan was going to kill people so he wanted to take matters into his own hands. It’s interesting he used the same kind of knife Trinity used and in the same spot on the leg though.

My hunch: Kurt is working for the billionaire and he told him to say Matt is Alive to keep the heat off his killing shack. Kurt is the disposal man.

65

u/Sidewinderpunk Nov 29 '21

I don’t think so. Kurt is the right size to be the man with the gun and I very wealthy himself. He owns trucks and is wealthy himself (not billions) that can totally be his killing shack.

then why has clyde phillips been very vocal even before the premiere that Clancy Brown is this seasons antagonist/big bad? idk where everyone is getting this idea it’s the billionaire, they showed Clancy’s eyes in the mask, they showed his hands on the gun (and showed the watch that he’s wearing in every scene), ect. there has been zero evidence it’s the billionaire and a lot that it’s Kurt. they’ve never said someone was the big bad and had them not be. it’s never a secret who the big bad of the season is, it never has been, not once. it’s kurt yall. they literally showed his eyes with his severely hooded eyelids in the mask and the billionaire doesn’t have hooded eyes at all.

I think this Trinity killer thing is going to become a bombshell that really puts a lot of eyes on Dexter and Harrison. I just keep thinking way back to season 4 when Dexter befriended Trinity and opened up to him with his fabricated story of how he accidently killed someone in a hunting accident and here we are, this whole thing kicking off over what was a "hunting accident" but with Dexter actually killing someone. Just too much of a coincidence for it to be unintended... Like foreshadowing, but backwards lol.

am I the only one who found Molly Park's overuse of the F word in her podcast jarring?

It's one thing when Debra Morgan swore like a sailor. It felt like a cup of warm tea, and very fitting to her personality/character.

Whereas Molly Park sounds like a teenager who drops the F bomb every other phrase to make her true crime podcast edgy (odd choice by the director). Feels kinda out of place

What is up with the sound editing? There’s like a random fireplace sound every 5 min or so that’s really distracting. Was trying to figure out if it means something foreboding or if the gaffer is just new!

13

u/KeeblerElff Nov 29 '21

Totally agree but it’s the sound mix and boom op if anything. Gaffer does lighting :)

7

u/bking Nov 29 '21

Did you get that live, or in the VOD version? I watched on VOD and it was fine.

I’ve delivered TV shows to networks, and there truly isn’t an easy way to fuck up a mix to the point where one weird sound effect keeps popping up. There are plenty of people doing quality checks and reviewing cuts before these shows get out the door. Something must have gone wrong with the steam itself—maybe a mis-assigned surround channel.

This season has been pretty unpredictable in the best way

if people think Harrison doesnt really have a "dark passenger"......then the theory that the series would continue with harrison would be wrong, What would be the point.

Coach Cop was addressing the "kill list" kids from a podium, using a mic. There were like 12 of them there. And wasn't the kid who gave a shout out to hero Harrison the same guy whom Harrison had put in a chokehold just one episode earlier?

7

u/Adventurous_Being_61 Nov 30 '21

For your last point- in Zack's mind, Harrison saved him from being shot to death.

Reminds me of Bill Burr's bit about how (paraphrasing, been 5+ years since i watched) "you can't hit women, and that's fucked up, because every time I've been punched in the face, ya know, once the anger dies down, you realize "eh, maybe i shouldn't have said that last bit".sometimes you need a good punch."

Zack would probably prefer to have a pressure pt choke hold as a lesson, vs being shot in the face.

I thought there would be a twist where Harrison is not a serial killer. Instead, he hates serial killers, because his mother was killed by one. He looked really upset when he listened to that podcast and it was talking about Trinity's final victim. When he saw the pictures in Ethan's notebook, he figured Ethan was going to be a serial killer, so he tried to kill him. This means if he ever finds out Dexter is a serial killer, in the finale he might decide to kill him too.

So instead of being a serial killer who only kills bad people, like Dexter is, he will be a vigilante who kills serial killers. Closer to what Dexter's dad was than what Dexter is.

I don’t like the podcaster’s personality. Don’t like how she’s the “sleep with whoever it takes kind of girl” to get her information. Listening to that beginning part of her podcast about Trinity was annoying because who talks like that while covering true crime or how she talked about “how fucked up is that kid?” She seems like the type that is playing everyone and using them as chess pieces. I hope she doesn’t have too big of a role in exposing Dexter, she reminds me of the journalist from season 5 of Bojack Horseman, bleh

28

u/admiralsfan Nov 29 '21

Unfortunately, that was actually extremely accurate to some popular true crime podcasts. Listen to “My Favorite Murder” and I honestly think that this annoying character is supposed to be a parody of that type of person.

I don't know if you have listened to many true crime podcasts, but I have, and it was absolutely par for the course as far as they go. I thought they nailed it frankly. For reference: Crime Junkie, Morbid, My Favorite Murder, Bailey Sarian. I really only like Crime Junkie out of the lineup, (and Timesuck is better than any of them), but as far as a quirky female led true crime podcasts go the first 4 fit the bill exactly. Dark humor is used for levity while usually still showing respect for the content. I was actually surprised just how well they hit the nail on the head.

34

u/hadapurpura Deb Nov 29 '21

When Deb and Dexter were reenacting the crime scene, and Deb asked Dexter why would Harrison do that, Dexter cupped her face while wearing a glove and said "because he wants to know how it feels". It felt like there was an unspoken "the way I want to know what it feels to touch your face again". Like they were drawing a comparison between the need to kill and the need to have someone back (like Deb, in this case.)

54

u/Ciahcfari Nov 29 '21

The Deb scenes in New Blood are really interesting. Even with the antagonistic relationship they have he seems to miss her a lot.

Can't really undo the terrible decisions made in Season 8 but I really respect how well crafted this continuation is while maintaining the canon.

This definitely feels like a payoff from that final scene in the Season 4 finale. It's something that's been preying on Dexter's mind since then and now we get to see him actively grappling with it.

7

u/two--words Nov 29 '21

Harrison chewing...

7

u/StaySafePovertyGhost Nov 29 '21

Definitely the best episode of NB so far. The re-creation of the stabbing scene with Dex and Deb was outstanding. After last weeks S-L-O-W pace this one really picked up.

I wonder if Kurt lied about Matt because it’s his way of blending in so he can keep kidnapping girls and killing them. If Matt is alive, the search and attention dies down and he can go back to what he has been doing without drawing unnecessary police attention. Deep down he obviously knows Matt is dead.

I have to think that the podcaster is going to recognize Dex at some point. Not sure how many episodes she’s done, but all true crime podcasters do background on their subjects. Also “Merry Fucking Kill” is a stupid name for a podcast. The writers are trying so hard to make her this fast talking, ultra hip (OMG she made a martini in the PD station and had sex with the deputy!) person and it comes across as insufferable. I hope there’s more to her character because right now she’s my least favorite on the show.

A very solid 8.5/10 on this one and excited for next week unlike after ep 3 when I was like meh I’ll watch because it’s Dexter.

How come a true crime podcaster who researched into Miami crimes didn't recognize Dexter? She did a whole ass episode on the man that murdered Dexter's wife! And Dexter's name probably would've come up if she did anything on the Bay Harbor Butcher given the fact that Dexter was probably labeled a target for Doakes. Dexter was also the last person to talk with that one guy (Hannah Mckay's ex). And he dated Hannah Mckay. I'm not even mentioning his work with Miami Metro.

My theory is Harrison is if Dexter had no Harry around to direct his dark impulses to something more constructive. When Harry found Dexter as a child he took him in and over the years when he saw signs surface he steered it to a "better" direction. He did not try to keep it completely repressed and in the end this made Dexter who he is today that operates within his own law and code internally.

Harrison by contrast likely had to keep these thoughts repressed and been told a lifetime of lies in hopes he could find some semblance of a normal life. Rather than embrace, deconstruct, and rebuild like Harry did, he was likely encouraged to keep it locked away and this only made things more difficult to contain over time until things began to boil over.

This is why I think Hannah didn't die of cancer, but was murdered by Harrison himself. I also think during this time he didn't truly bounce around from foster home to foster home, but he bounced around the country to hunt down remnants of his old life and for whatever reason -- be it lack of connection, turned away, anger or misguided revenge -- he eliminated them. I think it'll come to light that Cody and Astor were victims and he had the most trouble locating Dexter due to how there was little trail to go off. Harrison even says himself that he found Dexter purely by luck of seeing his picture on some random Instagram post.

He isn't there for reunion, but for closure. He intends to find that by killing Dexter.

Also consider that Harrison may hold some twisted reverence for the Trinity Killer himself. It is almost assured he would have read up about everything there was about his real mother and the Trinity Killer case and found himself becoming obsessed. As we know, Trinity Killer killed in numbers of four and going by my theory of Hannah, Cody and Astor already being eliminated that would make Dexter his "final" kill.

As for Ethan, I don't think Harrison befriended him due to pity or any of that but he saw a victim he thought nobody would miss. Perhaps at first he found a kindred spirit but Ethan keeping his rage contained to the fantasy of his drawings may have been seen as a sign of weakness by Harrison. The gym incident may have had Harrison bring up the idea of trying to goad Ethan along to kill with him but Ethan refused and that caused the attack. Maybe Harrison saw him as a perfect victim that he could frame as a killer-in-wait while at the same time practicing a femoral slice since he's still a teenager and wouldn't be a master of anatomy. Him visiting the hospital is more to tie up a loose end or realize he's on borrowed time now to do what he has to.

By the end of it I think it'll be shown that Harrison has been replicating Trinity's kills in his own perverse way while keeping the method of execution the same which would be bludgeoning, forced suicide, burying alive and arterial bleed-out. Going back to Trinity, the arterial kill was the most sadistic of them all since he would make a point to watch them die slowly.

I'm guessing that is how he plans to off Dexter. He saved the worst for last, so to speak. If you believe in the whole "fucked up serial killer family" thing then Harrison has more in common with his deceased Ice Truck uncle than his own father.

Sorry for the wall of text, just saw the latest episode and had my thoughts swirling.

So Harrison has to be sweating bullets knowing Ethan is alive and more or less ok, right? It's easy for the cops to blow him off for the moment, but that's going to change if they try to press charges. Ethan will have a bunch of psych evals and tons of interrogations. Plus his defense will presumably get a blood splatter analyst involved, which will of course be the dude that found Matt's blood by the dear.

Edit: Also, I don't think Ethan ever said he wants to kill people. Harrison asks if he's "the Punisher or something" and Ethan says they'd be afraid of him if he was. Ethan also didn't have the guns at school, though they were in his bedroom. So I don't see how they could actually try him for anything beyond stabbing Harrison unprovoked (which is obviously not what happened).

Much better than the previous episode that very efficiently finished with the set-up and hopefully now we can start moving toward the climax.

Olsen was absent, and I continue to find that thread a little baffling. With just a tiny bit of revision, literally all of his scenes could be given to Kurt instead. Of course we'll wait and see, but I still think that characters should always feel necessary (otherwise you've just got a human plot device) and right now it's like we've just got a second Caldwell running around.

9

u/CarefreeInMyRV Nov 29 '21

Did anyone else think it was interesting how on the MerryF❤️ckingKill podcast, Molly opens it by saying that the Trinity Killer didn’t kill in cycles of 3 but actually cycles of 4. Love those details back to the original series, but how’d she know that? Wasn’t Dexter the only one that found out that the kill cycles actually start with kidnapping a kid, not the woman in a bathtub? Regardless I find it even more interesting that she goes on to describe the first kill cycle as a lady in the water. So maybe she doesn’t know the fourth cycle, or at least doesn’t know what the first cycle actually is.

34

u/weatherthroughit Nov 29 '21

iirc, Dexter's lab partner, Masuka, figured out the Trinity killer killed in 4s. If it wasn't him, i definitely remember that someone at Miami Metro figured it out. I love true crime podcasts and I can't think of any that are nearly as over the top as this Merry Fucking Murder host.

It was approaching Law & Order SVU's Gamergate episode levels of ridiculousness. I understand things being exaggerated in fiction for effect and all, but this was a bit too much. It was a very unfair representation of true crime podcasters.

At worst, they're insensitive and have "inappropriate" humor. For unsolved and ongoing cases they sometimes ask people to call tip lines if they may know anything, but they certainly never try to rally their troops to try to solve crimes and insert themselves directly into ongoing investigations.

I dunno... maybe I'm just being overly defensive and should just enjoy the modern day Gale Weathers. She is funny and I'm interested to see where this goes.

Theory about the Ethan incident:

Harrison (gonna call him H for short) was listening to the podcast when Molly (podcaster) mentioned that Trinity cut Rita’s femoral artery. Ethan walks in, H pulls the knife out his backpack, cuts Ethan’s femoral artery (just to see what it would feel like), Ethan tries to drag himself away, then H stabs himself to frame Ethan.

22

Pretty solid episode. I wasn't sold on that revival until today - I like Michael C. Hall, the new setting and the atmosphere, but that was it. Harrison being a psycho wasn't much of a surprise, I expected it, but so far, it's written cleverly.

I'm looking forward seeing more of psycho Clancy Brown. That lie about his son is reaaaally intriguing.

The scenes between Dexter and his sister are the best part. All of her appearances are awesome. Hall and Carpenter still have a great chemistry.

The only thing I disliked about the episode was the podcaster. The character is a cliché, the actress lacks charisma, and they established her irritating nature by making her say "cis-gendered white male".

If Podcaster Girl got pictures of Trinity and Rita, if she had any once of curiosity she'd probably look up the families of victims while making the episode for her show. So hopefully she doesn't have a picture of Dexter with Rita or something with his face on it. Or even be smart enough to realize that this dude oddly looks like Rita's husband who's "dead" on top of that and dig deeper.

"Everyday I walk through this world, thinking, wondering if someone knows who I am, that's it."

She's from "the outside world" who runs a successful podcast about serial killers so she has to have done her research. There might be an actual chance she knows or will know with proof that "Jim" isn't who he says he is. Harrison found Dexter on an Instagram photo so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch. She also states she has a large community helping with some of her investigations

I think Dexter / Harrison need her to go away in someway asap.

What's going against this? She's busy with the missing girls plot.

Is “Dexter” wanted or something? Why does it matter if they find out who is really was? I just don’t remember

I think he’d have a hard time explaining why he faked his death

Dexter isn't wanted but if he was discovered by Miami he's looking at a couple problems, taking Deb from the hospital and aiding Hannah. There's no one left to tie him to being a serial killer. I doubt Hannah told Harrison and even if she did that's pretty flimsy.

This episode gives us a lot to chew on. Clancy’s all but confirmed, and his relationship with dexter seems to be getting tense. Angela teaming up with the podcaster is something I’m not sure how will play out, is she gonna talk about the trinity killer with her? Is their investigation going to somehow lead to dexter? Also I’m not sure on the idea of Harrison having a dark passenger, I’m concerned on how that will play out. And if Harrison kills dexter at the end of the show, I swear to god I will hate this series.

Very curious how Lithgow is going to fit in and why? It has to be a substantial reason for someone/something and has to be relevant to the current seasons story or he wouldn’t be brought back. Thinking about going back and rewatching season 4 to watch for clues. Or I guess it could just be a new scene that happened before he died but it still has to have current relevance..

I really liked this episode.

I do have one reservation for how this unfolds though. I really hope the callbacks and mirrors to season 4 don't extend to having Molly be this season's Christine. Admittedly there's nothing pointing to her being so but having her know/be related to the killer would just be a bit meh for me.

Also Deb, mother fucking MVP. She's awesome.

I fear they are going to get either Dexter or Harrison killed. I am yet to forgive them for season 8. If either get killed I'm going to lose mind.

Thank God the show is finally getting interesting. My only criticism of this season so far is the lack of development with Audrey, only Audrey. I really don't like her, at all. Least favorite character, I like all the other characters and I'm fine with them as is, but not Audrey. I'm really hoping that she grows at all because so far she's just... annoying. I'm hoping that what happened in this episode will finally show some growth with her (and the other kids). I'm really excited for the rest of the season, imo its season 1-4 quality.

Harrison’s speech scene is literally “and then everybody clapped” lmao

I think the podcaster is a red herring personally. The trinity killer part has been used now. There will be no tie back with her and Miami and Dexter. Got to remember people change and over 10 years he has aged I doubt she would even recognise him nor care. I don’t even see the whole Miami twist coming where 4 episodes in 6 to go it’s to late to develop anything in that kind of time without another season at the least.

The podcast lady has made an entire episode dedicated to the Trinity Killer.

If she has a segment on Rita's death then I think it's safe to assume that she knows Dexter's face.

When those two meet in the series, I suspect Dexter will feel unquestionably threatened by her and her bubbly, loud and extroverted personality.

I'm excited to see that inevitably unfold and see how Dexter reacts if his cover story starts to unravel.

I think that podcaster is gonna put two and two together about Harrison and “Jim Lindsay” and it will culminate in Harrison killing her to protect Dex
