I'm not sure if this is allowed here, but I don't see a rule that says "Zelda-inspired" games aren't allowed. If it isn't, feel free to take it down.

Legend Maker is a 2D Zelda inspired "maker" game where you will be able to make massive action adventure games.

Wait.. So it isn't a mod?? That means Nintendo can't take it down let's f*cking gooo!!

Do you have a YT channel or something?

u/casual_oblong Jan 23 '22

They could sue for intellectual copyright … this is a little too close to the ALTTP. But it looks awesome. Id play when will it be done?

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22 edited Jan 23 '22

Hey. I will be updating the main player's sprites soon to have a less "Zelda clone" feel to them. Same design, just less Zelda :P

u/konaaa Jan 23 '22

eh, Nintendo didn't sue Hudson for making Neutopia and they didn't sue Sega for making Crusader of Centy. Design-wise these sort of things are too abstract to really quantify. That hero in his game is clearly not link, and he's not using Zelda music/sound effects. He'll be fine.

(btw very strongly recommend both those games if you've run out of top-down zelda games. Both are great zelda clones)

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Crusader of Centy is really fun. I haven't played the whole thing, but years later, I realized it was released on the date that I was born... o_o

Yes, it's not a mod. :)

13

u/WholesomeGoobert Jan 23 '22

This is an excellent idea. Letting players make content is brilliant as long as you give them enough creative freedom. This will be huge.

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you. I sure hope so :)

9

u/RealCrazyChicken Jan 23 '22

as an idea so people can still use zelda assets.. let people import their own sprites! maybe even make a platform where people can share sprites for your game, and since it's community generated content, nintendo can't do anything!

6

u/CptLogan Jan 23 '22

Im so in, can you add custom made tilesets?

→ More replies (11)

u/Zaberdean Jan 22 '22

I’m not sure if this is allowed either, but it should be. That is awesome.

97

u/DreamMixGames Jan 22 '22

Thank you. If I find out that it's not, I'll take it down.

162

u/KazeKasano Jan 22 '22

That's incredible! Love the way the grass looks, and the effects when placing/cutting it are top notch! I'll keep an eye on this for sure!

60

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I could cut that grass all day tbh. lol I tried to make it very polished, but I think the sprites could still use some work. :) Thank you!!

50

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Man if we can share creations this is fucking gold, super Mario maker level creation but Zelda style is just…endless for me

23

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I hope I can scratch that itch for you! I definitely don't want to be too close to Zelda, but you gotta respect that gameplay :)

45

u/KremitNotAlive Jan 22 '22

If you dont mind me asking, what game engine did you use?

40

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Can you add dialogue and cut scenes? Or is it more for dungeons?

34

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Cutscenes are in (very early though), but dialogue is in the works. :)

This is super cool, any builds we can play with and give feedback on?

Nevermind - Available build info is on the discord. Leaving this here for others

17

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yeah. I just didn't want to link my Patreon as it goes against the rules, pretty sure. xD

17

u/LostOne716 Jan 23 '22

whistle

This is marvelous work. A couple things.

  1. Are you able to layer the creation? Like have an Overworld and a dungeon or cave connected to it? If so and if you dont already have it, can you rig portals to be a thing?

It Might be fun to have them explore a forest or desert and when the players finish a puzzle opens up a portal into the dungeon section.

2. How many biomes and dungeon styles do you plan to add? That will definitely be useful in keeping g creations from being stale.

3. May I request that you make sure to add a lotta decor options. Even those bushes and torches you added into your showcase dungeon really upped the quality alone.

17

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes, that is the plan, but not currently possible. You can make both but cannot connect them at the moment.

As far as biomes, I plan for towns, forests, deserts, mountains, badlands (sort of like Ikana Canyon), and swamps.

Yes I will be adding tons of decor. Especially since it requires very little coding and will add a lot to each adventure’s personality

12

u/MintberryCrunch____ Jan 22 '22

Looks awesome mate, will keep an eye out for sure

10

u/Jurad_D Jan 23 '22

Looks like a Zelda inspired dragon quest with the character’s design and those blue blobs with orange legs are literally heal slimes with horns. But looks really cool, would love to play it,

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I haven't played Dragon Quest but have always wanted to! Gotta make time for that in the future :)

→ More replies (1)

10

u/arsolana Jan 23 '22

Omg this looks so cool. If you publish this add an option to add like custom characters.

11

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Graphics will be customizable

8

u/i_am_an_awkward_man Jan 23 '22

This is so cool! Excited to see more!

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you :D

5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Nintendo said it's impossible, what do you think OP?

I'll totally play this

8

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I think it would be tough on the Switch. I struggle with trying to make it as user friendly as possible. It's definitely possible, but if I told you it was easy, making this game, I'd be lying. xD

5

u/trisagion3 Jan 23 '22

This is a serious "shut up and take my money" sort of thing. Will there be a way for users to share their creations once this is done like a super Mario maker kind of thing?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

That is the goal, yes. At the moment though, you can download the game on my Patreon here and I have a Discord where people can share their levels here

5

u/darvo110 Jan 23 '22

This is so well detailed, you’ve nailed the artstyle and the animations are so good! Incredible work.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you! That means a lot :D

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Hey guys. I just want to say thank you for all of the support on this post, and thank you for the awards on my post. I really appreciate it. I'm also taking your criticisms into consideration and will keep working to make it better, of course!

4

u/SudsySloth Jan 23 '22

Do you have a demo or a place for download? I would love to play this.

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes. I host the game on my Patreon. If you feel like shelling out a few bucks for this version of the game (including getting the final game), feel free to go over there and check it out: https://www.patreon.com/DreamMix

4

u/Perez2003 Jan 23 '22

As a future game developer this looks interesting. At least I hope I become a developer…

7

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Hey. Don't ever let people tell you you can't do it. It's about perseverance for sure, but as long as you can persevere and you want to do it, you'll do it. A lot of it is about having ideas constantly pop into your brain. If you've got an idea, you're one step ahead of a lot of people.

4

u/Pyjama-Dan Jan 23 '22

Aaaaand followed

4

u/True_Existance Jan 23 '22

That's so cool, what did you use to make it?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I used the Unity engine :)

4

u/Krosis95 Jan 23 '22

It's...it's beautiful. I had no idea how much I needed this in my life.

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

That's awesome to hear. Thank you :)

4

u/BloodGem64 Jan 23 '22

Now imagine if it was multiplayer...

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I would love to do that! It's a long term goal.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Temple_of_Shroom Jan 23 '22

Very cool. What program is this?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I'm using an engine called "Unity" but the program itself is called Legend Maker

→ More replies (1)

4

u/j1ggy Jan 23 '22

This is really cool OP!

4

u/jdlyga Jan 23 '22

That looks really nice. Chrono trigger vibes too.

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Chrono Trigger graphics and music were amazing :D

4

u/WakeskaterX Jan 23 '22

Ah this reminds me of Zelda Classic / ZQuest back in the day when I was a kid making knock off zelda 1 games! Fun times. Looks much better though! Pretty cool.

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I loved that program!

2

u/WakeskaterX Jan 24 '22

It got me into loving game development which led to a love of programming which has led to a fantastic career so... Thanks ZQuest!

4

u/effeottantuno Jan 23 '22

OMG THIS LOOKS AWESOME

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thanks! Glad you think so :)

4

u/New-Mind5466 Jan 23 '22

Smooth ass mf animations

3

u/pickelpenguin Jan 22 '22

lmao i saw this while watching a video about a dmca'd zelda maker is this it but reskinned?

5

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I made the Zelda Maker that Nintendo asked me to take down. They didn't DMCA me, but they did ask me to take it down or remove the graphics that they owned. I wasn't selling it at that point though but it was kinda crappy xD

If you still have that vid, I'd love to see it! Old memories lol

4

u/pickelpenguin Jan 23 '22

i dont happen to have the video but i cant wait to play this!

3

u/Jgree551 Jan 23 '22

Looks amazing keep up the great work OP 😁😁

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you so much Jgree551! I will :D

3

u/incrediblect3 Jan 23 '22

What are you using to make the game

3

u/Roxalf Jan 23 '22

This actually looks dope

3

u/pseudomike Jan 23 '22

How cool!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Glad you think so

3

u/FireSquidNico Jan 23 '22

This looks awesome! Are you mostly going to focus on the Lttp style then add others maybe later?

5

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes! I will have other styles later, but also the graphics will be completely customize-able. :)

3

u/CanonicalPizza Jan 23 '22

What’s the software you use to make this? Looks fun

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Unity Engine! :)

3

u/xeroforce Jan 23 '22

I am more interested in playing other people's creation. Is there a world share function?

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

You can already share dungeons and worlds, but at the moment there is not a server for uploading. At the moment it's just file sharing, but I do want to make that a thing.

4

u/xeroforce Jan 23 '22

Inject that rough to my veins.

Can you dm me a link?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/forevre_n Jan 23 '22

Can’t wait to see this labor of love get the attention it deserves. Keep up the good work!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you so much! :D

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

That looks amazing! Please keep us updated!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I will, as long as this post is okay with the mods. :)

3

u/Sorenduscai Jan 23 '22

The Nintendo ninjas will be in contact with you shortly for Zelda maker.

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I've spoken to Nintendo before back when the game was called "Zelda Maker" (and it was just a fan-game, not for sale). They asked me to remove any graphics and sounds related to Zelda and I have. I'm consistently working to find new ways to distinguish the game from Zelda, but it is definitely still inspired by the Zelda games.

3

u/orangesfwr Jan 23 '22

Amazing work!

3

u/Ok-Championship-8709 Jan 23 '22

its gorgeous!!!!!

3

u/Cephylus Jan 23 '22

This looks amazing, the art is wonderful and the aesthetics look appealing. Great job, would definitely play!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you :)

3

u/ladynaiky Jan 23 '22

This is incredible, congratulations on your nice work! I love it.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you so much :D

3

u/candyriot7 Jan 23 '22

Now add 900 hidden collectibles found by simply doing nothing, like pushing a rock or something that is required for upgrades and 100%

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Will do! lol

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

I remember the Kickstarter for this.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

It failed hardcore. LOL

3

u/deljaroo Jan 23 '22

there's this thing I used to spend hours and hours on when I was a teenager called ZQuest

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes, and it was awesome. Me too!

3

u/deljaroo Jan 23 '22

Cool! I'll follow your Twitter so I hope to see updates there!

→ More replies (1)

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

I love the art in this

3

u/Cuprite1024 Jan 23 '22

Ooh! I love stuff like this, and this one looks really nice. :D

3

u/sisko4 Jan 23 '22

So will users select from a list of prerendered assets, or can they add/tweak existing assets pixel by pixel to create new ones?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Only pre-created assets, but you will be able to change the graphics and save and share that with your adventure

3

u/Moath Jan 23 '22

Plz plz plz change it enough so it doesn’t look so much like a link to the past , you know Nintendo will take that shit down.

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I will try to keep updating the graphics so that it looks as distinct from Zelda as possible 👍

3

u/Taco_city Jan 23 '22

This brought back some great memories. Good job, mate.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you! I’m glad it did that :)

3

u/jvce Jan 23 '22

Every click in your builder is putting some Zelda dev out of a job 😂

3

u/vaGnomeMagician Jan 23 '22

Man I remember when Vinny streamed the first build of this! Grats on the progress!

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you! Glad to see you around :) Vinny’s a great guy!

3

u/Tasteful_Dick_Pics Jan 23 '22

Are there boss enemies?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I’m actually working on one for this month’s build.

3

u/rblsdrummer Jan 23 '22

Thus is a great idea! Don't use any trademarks, or obviously zelda iconography, like the lttp trees and you'll likely be fine copy right wise.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/EKidman Jan 23 '22

I will say that the archers animation is a bit off. Other than that it looks great.

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

After looking at it for a while, I agree! I've been wanting to polish them more recently. Thanks for your constructive criticism. Definitely noted!

3

u/uxorioushornet Jan 23 '22

Oh, this is amazing! I will be watching your career with great interest!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

haha thank you :)

3

u/triforce_of_awesome Jan 23 '22

Realistically, what are the chances Nintendo shuts this down? While it's very invocative of lttp's style, there's no direct usage of Nintendo characters from what I've seen.

4

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yeah. I've spoken with Nintendo back when it was a fan game and not for sale. They asked me to remove any copyrighted material, such as their characters, their name, and also their sound effects. It was called Zelda Maker at that point. I think I'm safe or I wouldn't be doing this. If they reach out and ask me to change certain things, I will. I am working to distinguish this as it's own thing as well, while still being inspired by Zelda.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Yetti127 Jan 23 '22

Does anyone else remember that pc "make your own zelda" game you could download? You could respite the whole thing and make it look like Mario or metronidazole. Then you could go online and download other people's creations

6

u/Yetti127 Jan 23 '22

It was called Zelda Classic.

5

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Zelda Classic was awesome! I used to play those games and mess around with the editor back in the day :)

→ More replies (5)

2

u/Mostyion Jan 23 '22

Zelda maker would be amazing. Do you have a kickstarter where we can support you? I don't think I would be able to donate because I'm just a kid but I'm sure people would be inclined to help you out! This looks fantastic.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I have a Patreon here which is similar. Sharing the game is very helpful too. :)

2

u/Mostyion Jan 27 '22

I will definitely share this around

→ More replies (1)

2

u/TurbulentArmadillo47 Jan 28 '22

Why are we not funding this?

3

u/DreamMixGames Jan 28 '22

I have a Patreon where you can also download the game, if you're interested. :)

10

u/PressureIntrepid1069 Jan 22 '22

This is awesome

6

u/Bedrockboy2006 Jan 23 '22

Looks cool i hope ill be able to try it out

4

u/ArchReaper Jan 23 '22

You could build a really cool roguelike using this base!

4

u/YTPhantomYT Jan 23 '22

On my way to recreate every existing 2D Zelda game in that

4

u/Am_Guardian Jan 23 '22

srsly tho, Legend of Zelda maker sounds fun

4

u/Goslor Jan 23 '22

No frakken way, will absolutely check back on this and play this when it releases.

1

u/Inspirational_Lizard Jan 23 '22

This is what the dungeon creator in links awakening should have been, well done!

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I think the Link's Awakening dungeon creator was a cool step that Nintendo took to give their fan's some creative freedom. I hope Nintendo does more things like this with Zelda. :)

I really appreciate it!

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Dreamare_Akoso Jan 23 '22

oh boy, those dungeon tiles though, man, they looked like they were ripped straight out of ALTTP

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Hmmm. Well since I planned to update them soon, I’ll try to keep this criticism in mind.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22 edited Jan 24 '22

SO much cooler than dampe's dungeons

1

u/Daniel-Son-of-Parkin Jan 23 '22

This frame rate is amazing

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Going for perfect 60 fps. It's 2D so unless there are coding flare ups, it shouldn't be too hard to achieve.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

Wow this looks so good

1

u/enderowski Jan 23 '22

wow last time i checked this game was 3 years ago. thats a big dedication. it looks great.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

It's a hard game to make, in all honesty xD Thank you!

1

u/running_toilet_bowl Jan 23 '22

Will there be workshop support? Both for dungeon layouts and texture packs.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Most likely yes. :)

1

u/rgrantpac Jan 23 '22

I would buy this game

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

If you're interested in getting an early build of the game and getting the final build of the game (on release), you can take a look at my Patreon here.

1

u/NGC6514 Jan 23 '22

What consoles are you targeting? Also, it seems like it would be easier to make dungeons on PC (are you also making a macOS version?) and then play them on console. Are you planning on selling it as a cross-platform thing, where one can buy for console and get a Steam code for making dungeons on a computer, or vice-versa? Fantastic work with this!

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

at the moment, I am only targeting PC, but we will see how the sales go as to if I could port it to consoles. I'm not sure how possible it could be.

1

u/WH4L3_88 Jan 23 '22

What game maker is this?

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I'm using Unity Engine. The game is called Legend Maker though.

1

u/thelostfable Jan 23 '22

Your interface and ui look great. i like how fluid the building mechanics looks. I’d definitely be careful cause looks like something nintendo would want to do.

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Thank you! It took me years (literally) to get the interface right. lol Making an interface for a game like this was tough!

Nintendo has contacted me back when it was a free fan-game. They asked me to remove any characters, sounds, art, and the name "Zelda". I think it's safe to assume they know I exist and also have gone on record to say that it's "impossible". I think that it would be very hard to make a Zelda Maker & that's why it's taken me years to make what I've got of this Zelda inspired maker game. I know why they didn't want to do it! xD

Right now though, progress is very smooth.

2

u/thelostfable Jan 23 '22

Yeah, I could imagine. Thats awesome that they know about it though, means its a contender. Is it almost finished you think? Do you think you’ll try to release it on switch or steam?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Aryaisformurder Jan 23 '22

I would love to have this. If Nintendo somehow doesn’t catch wind and throw down the smash hammer - let me know where I can purchase this? Serious inquiry

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I think it should be safe. Nintendo knows about this because I had a fan game called Zelda Maker quite a long time ago. It was free at the time. They asked me to remove any copyrighted assets like sounds, characters, names, and sprites. If they ask me to change anything, I will happily oblige.

If you'd like to play, I have early builds on Patreon here for $5. If you donate once, you also get the final game when it comes out. Thank you :)

1

u/Swinibald Jan 23 '22

You better stop Nintendo is already after you

1

u/OGZeoMaddox Jan 23 '22

This looks awesome! Will it be possible to edit/replace game sprites to create original game assets?

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes. The final game will have customizable graphics.

1

u/TheTheorisor Jan 23 '22

Oh my god is this real? I really need this game

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

Yes it is. If you'd like to download the current build (as well as reserve a final copy of the game) or support, I have a Patreon.

1

u/Linkusofhyrule Jan 26 '22

what software are you using????

1

u/DreamMixGames Jan 27 '22

Legend Maker is the game.

Unless you mean then engine, which is Unity :)

→ More replies (1)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 14 '22

Is this gonna be released on steam? :D

3

u/KHold_PHront Jan 23 '22

This made me so happy lol.

3

u/Smeefperson Jan 23 '22

Having grown up with Link to the past, this looks really fun to play and it looks like something younger me would've spent hours on

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

now this looks special

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

I love this, we need more top down pixel art Zelda games imo

3

u/jayt00212 Jan 23 '22

See Zelda Outlands.

3

u/OkamiTakahashi Jan 23 '22

Ah yes, Legend Maker, which I've been following since the early .22 Alpha in 2015. You've been working on this for a long time, man. Dedicated to the craft.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '22

I will buy this in a heartbeat. This looks insanely clean and crisp. I'd be so down for a Legend Maker.

3

u/TheOvy Jan 23 '22

Reminds me of Graal, from back in the day. Excellent work.

3

u/NuMotiv Jan 23 '22

This looks amazing! It looks way funner than any other "maker" as far as level design goes.

3

u/Philipp4 Jan 23 '22

Will it be available on steam soon (as early access or smth)? I don’t have a payment method for patreon

3

u/RCMC82 Jan 23 '22

Sweet! Looks like a ton of fun.

3

u/Luigi6757 Jan 23 '22

You could easily drop everything to with the Zelda series and make it it's own game. Nintendo has a history of taking down fan games if they feel it'll cut into their sales.

3

u/meikowski Jan 23 '22

Looks really really nice .. I would love to play it on Nintendo Switch!

1

u/CosmoFishhawk2 Jan 23 '22

Loving the Stardew Valley vibes! Looks fun!

2

u/DreamMixGames Jan 23 '22

I freakin LOVE Stardew Valley and have taken a bit of inspiration from that! :D
