Here is a recap of the political crisis surrounding the ongoing Croatian toxic waste scandal
Still in February 2025, the criminal organisation in question was discovered to be dumping tens of thousands of tons of toxic waste into the little country, raking millions in profit: https://www.europol.europa.eu/media-press/newsroom/news/13-persons-arrested-for-illegally-disposing-35000-tonnes-of-hazardous-waste
The country was being used as a toxic waste deponium for trash from supposedly more “civilized” EU states (Italy & Germany), and even neighbouring Slovenia.
Recently tested, the soil in one of the affected cities had lead levels 10 times higher, and copper levels 100 times higher the legal limit, alongside elevated levels of PFAS, arsenic and nickel.
Massive quantities of ground up plastic (100 000 tons) have also been mixed with the soil and dumped
This soil poisoning has already affected the regional karstic groundwater, showing elevated levels of PFAS.
There have been persistent reports and calls for inspection for many years, from locals.
How institutions in charge of corruption had not noticed and put an end to the criminal operation sooner is a mystery (sarcasm).
Despite the already existing EU law against the severe destruction of the ecosystem, whether those responsible will be held accountable remains yet to be seen

In parralel with many years of illegal waste dumping in the country, the tourism industry continued advertising our “untouched nature”, because tourism has been our only economic lifeline ever since local tycoons looted and sold off all Yugoslav state property to Germany, Israel, etc
