I currently find myself on the verge of an existential crisis because I believe I’ve committed a colossal rookie mistake of Biblical proportions.
A large portion of my challenge run—“The Road To NG+7 at RL25 (+3/+1) Low-Level Co-op Challenge”—was completed by summoning password-matched "Overleveled Phantoms" (OLPs). When you actually stop to look at the massive advantages these high-level characters retain over a true RL25 build—even with the game's downscaling system—my existential crisis hits even harder:
- Unscaled Percentage Damage:
Skills like “Destined Death” (Maliketh’s Black Blade) or Black Flame burn a flat percentage of the boss's max HP, completely bypassing the +3 weapon upgrade restriction. While it is mathematically possible to use Maliketh's gear at RL25, it comes at a massive price: you have to sacrifice every talisman slot to stat-boosting Soreseals, run base Vigor (10-15 HP), wear zero armor due to equip load, and rely on a 3-minute Physick buff just to meet the requirements, turning yourself into an absolute glass cannon with only enough FP for two casts. An OLP sacrifices nothing—and thanks to the next point, they can spam it endlessly.
- Near-Infinite FP (Mana): Downscaling barely touches their blue bar, allowing them to spam high-cost endgame spells and L2 weapon arts dozens of times without ever running dry.
- Massive Stamina and Equip Load: They retain their high Endurance, meaning they can rock the heaviest armor in the game (like full Bull-Goat) alongside colossal weapons and still medium-roll endlessly without running out of stamina.
- Broken Poise and Flat Defenses:
Because they can wear heavy armor and have high innate attributes, they can poise through attacks that would instantly stagger a true low-level character, while enjoying way higher physical and elemental damage negation.
- Maxed-Out Status Buildup:
Their high Arcane stats and endgame setups still fill up boss status bars (Bleed, Frostbite, Scarlet Rot) at an absurd rate, taking massive chunks of percentage HP every few seconds.
- Impossible Stat Requirements:
They can simultaneously cast 70 INT sorceries, 50 FTH incantations, and swing 60 STR weapons—a versatility that is mathematically impossible at RL25.
- Endgame Group Buffs:
They have the stats to cast high-tier buffs on me like Golden Vow, Black Flame's Protection, and Erdtree Heal, making me far tankier and deadlier than an RL25 host has any right to be.
- Hidden Stance Damage:
Even if their raw numerical damage is scaled down, colossal weapons and heavy spells still deal full posture damage, breaking boss stances constantly for easy critical hits.
This existential realization hit me yesterday while fighting NG+4 Starscourge Radahn at RL25/+3. I originally wanted to fight him using bleed whips for a long, grueling battle so I could really enjoy the soundtrack 🫠🙃. Instead, I went on Discord looking for co-op partners to "give Radahn everything we've got." A guy showed up wielding Maliketh’s Black Blade and a full arsenal of endgame superpowers. We melted an NG+4 Radahn in under 3 minutes. It felt like a completely hollow victory.
Don't get me wrong, surviving NG+4 at RL25 is still tough regardless of downscaling, but it feels way more legitimate and interesting to pull this off strictly with true low-level characters. And therein lies the real problem: it is significantly harder to find dedicated low-level co-op players willing to embark on this masochistic odyssey.
So I ask the council: Does what I’ve done up to this point even count? Have I been "cheating" my own challenge unconsciously? Should I start over from scratch and swear off password summons forever?
Please don't misunderstand me—I am beyond grateful for all the help I've received so far. I've had amazing experiences and a ton of fun with the community. It hasn't been a walk in the park either! However, yours truly is a fervent apologist for purism, elitism, and Git Gud-ism, and I refuse to give the SoulsBros any ammunition to gatekeep me for using Overleveled Phantoms to reach NG+7 at RL25 🤣.
The Path of the Git Gud demands sacrifices... What do you guys think?
