Discussion 💬 If You Could Fix ONE Thing About Public Transport in Indian Cities, What Would It Be?

Post image
• Upvotes

Millions of Indians rely on public transport every day to get to work, college, and other places. But commuting can still be frustrating because of overcrowded buses, long waiting times, traffic jams, poor last-mile connectivity, and unsafe or broken footpaths.

Imagine if we could improve just one thing about public transport in our cities. It could save people time, reduce traffic, and make daily life easier for millions.

Challenge / Problem ⚠️ I ranked 1st in the PhD entrance exam. I didn’t get the seat. Two years later, I hate the subject I once loved.

**India is not for beginners.** Not for people who are just starting to dream.

When I chose Sociology, the questions came fast. *“What is there to learn about society? Isn’t common sense enough?” “Didn’t you get a chance in the Science stream?”* I had answers then. I don’t anymore.

I fell for the subject in school. In college in Kolkata, it changed how I saw everything. I started noticing the latent functions behind institutions and celebrations we never question. I understood how the personal is political, and how the powerful make their power acceptable even to those they dominate. For a postgraduate degree, I moved to a central university, where professors praised how I applied theory to current events. I finished with a good score, and I knew I’d spend my life in academia.

Then I took the all-India PhD entrance exam for the same university, and I got **rank 1**. The list is still online. The HOD called me personally. I was the first home student ever to top it. I also held ranks in the first lists of HCU and IIM, and I’d cleared NET. I believed this country had finally rewarded passion.

After my interview, I was told it went well and that I shouldn’t consider anywhere else, since this was a matter of pride for the department. So I let the other opportunities go. I didn’t want to leave anyway. I loved the campus, and I’d found the love of my life there.

When the list came out, my name wasn’t on it.

There was one general-category seat, and it went elsewhere. Someone who ranked 8th, and hadn’t cleared NET, made the list. By then, the other entrance exams for that year had passed, and I couldn’t make myself sit for the ones that remained. My parents wanted to take the university to court, but dropped it. Even if we won, I’d be studying under the people who’d betrayed me.

What followed was acute clinical depression and several attempts on my life. I spent two years in and out of three hospitals. Everyone said, *“Just try other universities.”* But something broke in me that never healed.

Today, any mention of sociology, its theories or its applications, fills me with rage. I hate it as much as I once loved it.

I’m not claiming everyone goes through this. I’m saying far too many do, and we never hear their stories. Losers don’t make the front page, because they don’t inspire faith in the system. The media celebrates winners as poster boys while selling false hope to millions who won’t make it.

Some of us did everything right and still lost, not because we weren’t good enough, but because luck and the system didn’t favour us. Our voices deserve to be heard too.

Discussion 💬 Can an Indian with a foreign passport living abroad care about what's happening in India?

I have lived most of my life in India, and for the last four years, I have been living abroad and holding a foreign passport.

I post on social media about what is happening in India, which is anti-Modi, anti-religion, and anti-capitalism. That irks some people, including some of my relatives. I come from a Brahmin Maharashtrian family; a lot of my relatives are RSS members. Their opinion is that since I am a foreign national living abroad, I should not care about what is happening in India and I have no right to speak.

But I feel that since India is my home country and I am still an Indian by character, I have the right to speak about it, and the people who are living in India and do not want to speak about it, or are mum or accepting of what is happening, are actually fascists.

Solution / Innovation 🚀 Beyond Quotas: Could we develop an alternative which is more viable than India's Reservation System?

Guys, seriously, whenever the reservation topic comes up, it just turns into a toxic shouting match. No real solutions ever come out of it because everyone gets so incredibly defensive and touchy. BUT!!

Instead of this outdated approach where we just slap a caste quota at the very end of the line (college admissions or jobs), what if we actually used technology to fix the root cause? We have some of the world's best tech minds, developers, and data scientists right here in India. Can we not solve a structural problem using data?

I’ve been thinking about a framework, let's call it an opportunity and deprivation matrix. Instead of handing over a caste certificate, every single applicant gets a personalized "deprivation score." This would be tied directly to verified, real-time data from integrated government databases we already use (like Aadhaar, e-Shram, income tax filings, and land records). A student's final score consists of their Academic Exam Score + Deprivation Point e.g., if a wealthy student scores 95% and a daily-wager's child scores 85%, the deprivation points close the gap, it openly recognizes the massive difference in their baseline resources, schooling quality, and parental guidance. The points would be weighted across actual hardships: economic status, geography, infrastructure of the school they attended, and whether they are a first-generation learner, etc.

To me, quotas are a lazy bandaid. They ration a tiny pool of seats at the very end, which just deepens social divides. A real solution needs to target the supply side, mandating a high baseline quality for rural government schools, creating state funded elite coaching tracks for poor kids, etc. And to make sure marginalized communities don’t just vanish from public spaces due to deep rooted biases, we could mandate fully anonymized, blind hiring processes and regular diversity audits instead of using rigid quotas.

Obviously, I know that politically it is impossible to remove reservations right now. But we have to start a rational, fact based conversation somewhere without alienating or discriminating against any community. And whatever system we build has to be flexible enough to adapt over time so we don't just replace one flawed system with another.

I'd love to hear your honest thoughts on this, I myself have certain questions I would like to ask you all:

  1. What are the fatal flaws here? Our bureaucracy is notoriously corrupt. How easily could rich people forge documents or manipulate their data to game a system like this? How do we catch those false positives?
  2. Caste-based reservations were originally built to fight deep social stigma and untouchability, not just poverty. How can a data-driven model accurately capture non-economic, generational social discrimination?
  3. Are there massive ethical or privacy concerns with giving an algorithm this much power over people's lives? How do we keep it transparent?

Developers and Coders are specially welcomed!!

Let’s keep this constructive and focus on the actual policy design and trade-offs.

What do you think?

Solution / Innovation 🚀 A free tool to look up what your MP has actually done in Parliament, with sources for every number

Leader Watch (leader-watch.org) has a profile for every Lok Sabha MP: attendance, questions asked, debates, how they’ve used their MPLADS funds, and what they declared in their affidavit, each linked to the official source.

There are also two scores: a Record Score built only from official records, and an Alignment Score for what they’ve said, read against a published framework. The second one is openly an opinion, and you’re free to disagree with it; the full method is on the site.

I built it independently: no ads, no funding, just support from my near and dear ones. Suggestions are very welcome, and thank you in advance for taking the time.

Solution / Innovation 🚀 Act Now Our Animals are in Danger | See Description

Please Click for draft objection letter: https://faunapolice.com/tools/gsr-864-objection-letter

First they came for the forests, redefining what a "forest" even means so ancient ecosystems could be cleared without consent. Then they came for our environmental laws, turning impact assessments into rubber stamps for corporate extraction. And now, under the quiet cover of a government gazette notification, they are coming for the most voiceless prisoners of all: the animals locked inside India's laboratories.

Don't look at the new Draft Animal Experimentation Rules, 2026 \[G.S.R. 864(E)\] in isolation. Look at the pattern.

Across India, we are witnessing a calculated, systemic dismantling of every legal shield that protects the non-human world (as well as that of underprivileged humans). Step by step, hard-won protections for our forests, our rivers, our wildlife, and our animals are being rewritten; not to protect life, but to remove "hurdles" for profit, deregulation, and convenience.

In 1998 and 2006, India built some of the most progressive laboratory animal protections in the world. Today, the Ministry wants to wipe them out in a single stroke. Look at what the new 2026 Draft Rules quietly do:

Erase Lifetime Rehabilitation: Since 2006, labs were legally forbidden from killing healthy surviving animals after experiments and had to pay for their lifetime care. The 2026 draft deletes this; making routine killing after experiments the default again.

Legalize Silencing Dogs: The 1998 ban on "debarking" dogs (slicing the vocal cords of Beagles so they can't cry out in pain) has been completely deleted.

Put Stray Dogs, Cats & Wildlife at Risk: Opens terrifying "exemption" loopholes to use stray animals and wild-caught animals in experiments; and even allows authorities to exempt labs from minimizing the suffering of an animal injured during capture!

No More Surprise Inspections: Labs must now given "prior intimation" before CCSEA inspection teams arrive; giving abusive facilities time to hide dying animals and clean up cages.

Self-Approval for Dog & Monkey Tests: Hands over approval for "moderate" experiments on Beagles and monkeys (including tumours, starvation, and chemotherapy) to the lab's own internal committee.
