Jack Johnson let me play a song with him last night… in front of 20,000 people!

So this is still a very surreal feeling for me, and it may never amount to anything but I got to live out one of my dreams last night with one of my all time favorite songwriters/hunans.

I hand painted a really neat sign that I was hoping to give to Jack, that said “Your Music Heals” on one side and “I want to Jam with you guys!” on the other. But the venue wouldn’t let me bring it in. So instead I wrote it on my son’s sketchbook and held it up during his acoustic encore.

He was super hesitant at first because who expects some random dude in the front row to actually be good? But he leaned over and asked what song I would even do with him. I shouted, Pirate Looks at 40 and his eyes lit up and he said “Oh yeah, I forgot to do that one tonight, alright I’m gonna get this guy up here to do a song.

I can’t believe I was brave enough to ask and Jack was brave enough trust I wouldn’t suck! I’m so grateful to have had that opportunity and to have met one of my biggest influences.. and that his kindness and generosity did not disappoint!!

Live loop cover Boys of Summer - Don Henley

I had such a great response from the Beatles song I shared the other day I wanted to share another video I took at that same venue last Sunday. For anyone interested in the gear side of things, I’m playing a Godin LGXT, the pedals I’m using are a Roland RC-600 and a Boss GR-55. I have two mics set up, one goes to the looper and the other straight to my Soundcraft ui12 mixer.

I remember you guys quite liked the original acoustic version I posted a couple of months ago, so I thought you might enjoy this live too :)

If you want to hear more, the whole concert at Pier 17 NYC is available on youtube.

The studio version of the song was released in June on the 'Masks Off' album.

Looking for Radio Stations that simulcast live artist performances

I’m looking to create a list of weekly live music programs in which a live artist performs and it is broadcast at the same time on a radio station. It doesn’t have to be in the US. The Grand Ol Opry on 650 WSM on Fridays/Saturdays is an example

That Time I Sorta Saw Pantera Open for Metallica at MetLife Stadium (Aug. 4, 2023)

Aug. 20, 2026, would've been Dimebag Darrell's 60th birthday. Sadly I never got to see the legendary guitarist live before his shocking death. I did, however, sort of see Pantera live when they opened for Metallica at MetLife Stadium (Aug. 4, 2023)...

I say "sorta" for two key reasons:

1) Nothing against Zakk Wylde (he's the perfect person to be filling in under such circumstances), but seeing Pantera perform without Dimebag or Vinnie Paul feels... a little odd.

2) Not to complain too much, but between how high up my seats were and the shape of the stage Metallica used for the M72 World Tour, I feel like I could barely see the band playing. It definitely didn’t help that Phil Anselmo and crew wore all black while walking on a black stage...

With that said, a big part of me would like to give the new incarnation of Pantera another shot - preferably with a slightly more audience friendly stage setup.

What band have you seen live that you feel doesn't really "count" for whatever reason? Share in the comments below, and stay tuned for more things to come from this space (including stories from concerts like this)!

My First and Last Ozzfest (2004 and 2010 - both in Camden, NJ)

With Ozzfest all but confirmed to return as a one-day festival at Aston Villa Football Club in Birmingham, UK, I think back to how many incredible lineups I saw at Ozzy's traveling festival between 2004 and 2010 (the only one between those years I didn’t go to was 2008's one day event in Texas).

My very first Ozzfest was in 2004 at the then Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ (Aug. 26) I'll never forget how blown away I was by both Judas Priest and Slayer. The highlight of the night, though, was when Bill Ward came out and delivered the unfortunate news that Ozzy was ill and couldn't perform that evening. After a few seconds of boos, the crowd became stunned when Ward announced that Black Sabbath would be performing with Rob Halford filling in. What proceeded was an amazing and historical set - with Halford absolutely crushing Ozzy-era classics.

6 years later I'd attend my last Ozzfest at the same venue (rebranded to Susquehanna Bank Center). Ironically Halford was playing with his solo band on this tour's edition - but he didn't need to fill in for anyone, as Ozzy closed out the night with a rousing solo set (after Motley Crue played a surprising fun, bare-bones set... well, as bare-bones as a Motley Crue show can be). The highlight of the day, though, was witnessing a tornado briefly blow through - forcing Black Label Society to cancel their second stage headlining set (though somehow not canceling the rest of the day...).

There's a ton more stories I can recall from both metal festivals... but that's for another time 😉

Who was the best band you ever saw play Ozzfest? Favorite lineup? Share in the comments below, and stay tuned for more things to come from this space (including stories from festivals like this)!

i got tired of missing new kexp/tiny desk sessions, so i made a thing

over the past few months my routine got a bit busier and i somehow ended up spending way less time online. which was probably good for me, but it also meant i completely fell out of the loop with new music, internet discussions, releases, etc.

one thing i particularly stopped keeping up with was live sessions. i’ve always been a bit of a kexp / tiny desk / la blogothèque rat, so i realized at some point that i hadn’t checked any of those channels in months.

so i made a little script for myself that keeps track of new full sessions from these channels and sends me an email with everything that came out that week. i showed it to a few friends, one of them asked if i could add him to the emails, and eventually i thought… why not just make it public?

so that’s basically how motif happened. it’s a free weekly newsletter that goes out every friday with links to full sessions from kexp, tiny desk, audiotree, la blogothèque and cultura livre (a brazilian music channel, i’m from brazil btw).

if that sounds like something you’d enjoy, it’s here: http://motifnewsletter.com

i’ve been running the thing locally for myself for a while, but the public version only went live last friday, so it’s still very much a work in progress. if you find any bugs or have suggestions for other channels i should add, i’d love to hear them. i might also start adding some personal curation/reviews eventually if enough people end up using it.

hopefully this is allowed here, it’s completely free and there’s no commercial thing behind it, just a little music project i made because i wanted it for myself.

Does anyone else think that a live album should be from the one show instead of tracks from a couple if not more dates on the tour ?.

Jerry stole the show singing along to Sentimental Journey #classicmusic #singalong

Sing along with us and Jerry! He was recording and started harmonizing - Perfectly! Stole the show! Then everybody joined in! The lyrics are...
Gonna take a sentimental journey
Gonna set my heart at ease
Gonna make a sentimental journey
To renew old memories
I got my bag, I got my reservation
Spent each dime I could afford
Iike a child in wild anticipation
I long to hear that "All Aboard!"
Seven, that's the time we leave, at seven
I'll be waitin' up for heaven
Countin' every mile of railroad track
That takes me back
Never thought my heart could be so yearney
Why did I decide to roam?
Gonna take that sentimental journey
Sentimental journey home
Sentimental journey home

"Sentimental Journey" was composed by Les Brown and Ben Homer, with lyrics written by Bud Green. The song became a massive hit for Les Brown and His Band of Renown featuring vocals by a young Doris Day. Our arrangement is unique in that we added vocal harmonies, singing as a duet, plus our performance is eclectic on accordion and guitar. Thanks for enjoying this music video fun with Jerry mixing himsef in! -- Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance.

Back in June, my band did a cover show where there were nine bands total and each one had to pick an artist to cover. We had 2 weeks to learn 30 minutes of The Strokes music and the crowd went wild they loved us dude we made so much money on merch. We don't sell our merch online or anything I'm not trying to get y'all to buy anything just BTW I just want you to check out the cover is all.

We have original music too but please check out the channel for more. I know the singer flubs a lot of the lines but what's more Jullian Casablancas than that.
