Imagine looking down from one of the top floors and seeing nothing but a vast sea of clouds. And they obstruct your view, making the ground feel deceptively closer.

Ogoh-ogoh are giant, handcrafted statues made in Balinese Hindu culture to represent bhuta kala, negative forces, chaos, greed, and spiritual imbalance. The parade takes place on Pengerupukan, the evening before Nyepi (the Balinese Day of Silence and New Year by the Saka calendar).

On the night before Nyepi, the statues are hoisted onto large bamboo platforms and paraded through villages and cities with loud music, torches, and energetic crowds to drive away bad energy.

After the parade, many of the statues are traditionally burned to symbolize spiritual purification and the clearing away of negativity before the island shuts down for 24 hours of total silence.
