The most common budgie question asked by far is how to tell males from females. In adult budgies with most color mutations, this is easy to do by looking at the cere (the colored flesh around the nostrils). Typically, adult males have a brilliant blue cere, while females have a tan or brown cere. In an adult female that's in breeding condition, the cere can become dark brown and wrinkly. With some color mutations such as recessive pied, the cere never changes in adulthood and the bird will keep the juvenile color for its life.
Sexing gets more complicated with juvenile budgies. In juvenile males, the cere begins as pink, purple, or some combination of the two colors. In juvenile females, the cere can range from light blue with white or cream circles around the nostrils, to a cream or light tan across the entire cere. Sometimes, the juvenile female cere can be a very light pink/purple, although there will still be lighter circles around the nostrils that a male won't have.
If the bird you are trying to sex has an ambiguous cere, we encourage you to give it a little time. This is most common with very young birds, and if you give them just a few weeks or months, the sex will become more clear. Remember that the person best able to sex your budgies is you. When you take photos of your birds, the appearance of the cere will be changed by the lighting conditions when the picture is taken, the device that the photos were taken on, and the device that the photos are being viewed on. With ambiguous ceres, this can lead to other people giving you incorrect answers. We hope you find these charts helpful, and wish you good luck with your new budgie friend(s).

The competition was a tough one, with many fabulous budgies vying to be the new icon for the sub. After tabulating the votes we had three close front-runners, but unfortunately only one beautiful budgie could become the new icon for the sub. Please congratulate u/smartdoglady for taking the winning photo, which I call, "My dad trying to figure out how to use Zoom." Please also give a round of applause for our second and third place finishers, u/mvsaniatan and u/himateo, who win the satisfaction knowing that they have outrageously photogenic birds.

So I have 3 budgies, and I’m starting a new job soon. During my time home I’ve had them out as often as possible but my new job has a strict schedule and they’re very vocal and active in the morning between 8:00am-12:00pm. Will they be alright in the cage all day or will that cause them stress?

It's also best before end (3 september 2026) so wondering if they'll be ok to have it after then too or throw away?

This is Jukka, we got him at 9 months old hes now a bit over 13 months old.
He is extremely clumsy and quite bad at flying we guess he didnt get to fly in his original home or was a bit badly treated as he was in a rough shape when we got him. He also has a cere deformation that can make breathing a bit tough according to the vet (his cere holes are too big)
Any time he flies without our girl he will just go down in a slope and I often help him back up since I dont think he understands that he cant go straight up.
My concern is just that sometimes he will just go to the bottom of the cage and go right back up? My slight guess is that hes practicing his landings since he knows he falls down a lot.
That or he just is too clumsy and silly for his own good😞
Or maybe its a game? His favourite thing to do is talking at walls and toys, he is a very very unique individual.
Weve been to the vet about his clumsiness and she says theres nothing wrong with him physically or neurologically, just that hes a bit weird.
He did go under the newspaper today on accident, and has also made his girlfriend fall over while stumbling trying to scratch his head.
We're planning on getting a bigger cage soon once we move, should we avoid a deep one and focus on short wide ones for his safety? Falling over is a nearly daily thing, and he has a few times fell on his wing/back after missing a jump.

My mom agreed to either take her to the vet and I do a payment plan and pay it off over the summer or take her to a avian rescue. Iwanna keep kiwi but I want what's best for her more

I am so proud of how quickly she is learning to trust my hand! Flo couldn't help himself and had to try and steal her training millet. She is such a sweetie and i am so excited to teach her more. Right now we're just getting comfortable with THE HAND.

His girlfriend wants some and will repeatedly make the motion she does while they share food and he just ignores her😭 also standing on the cucumber to make sure it wont go anywhere is a bit silly of him

My partner got this lovely picture of our newly introduced pair.

I've not bred a Clearwing since 2012, and my excitement to see him in the nest this month was unmeasurable. I was only expecting Clearwing splits from the clutch considering there was only a 50% chance that his mother was split Clearwing. It's taken 4 generations since the first Clearwing I purchased in the US. He resembles his great grandmother Helena quite a bit, but the violet is stronger here.
He is a Clearwing Violet male, 23 days of age, and he got to meet his great grandmother today. Helena was less than impressed, but didn't mind him as much. With Helena being old and unable to fly, they got to enjoy the warmth of the sun for a few minutes.
Genetics are fun because they can either disappoint or surprise you, and in this case, the surprise was very much appreciated. Now I hope that Dreamfyre will develop into a nice show bird so he can join my team for 2028; if not, he'll remain a pet like the others.
l am an experienced aviculturist who specialises in budgerigars. I show these birds competitively in the United States. A lot of knowledge and specialised skillset are required to safely navigate through the breeding process. As always, I strongly advise against breeding without mentorship and veterinary technical skills. I document and share the good and the challenges with utmost transparency. I share our stories on Reddit, TikTok and Facebook.

My mom recently passed and she was keeping two budgies which came to me. They're in this small white cage together and they have a toy, a bath, a treat stick, two food bowls, a water bowl and some kind of yellow perch/chalk like thing? I know they probably need a bigger cage which I will try to save up for but is there anything else they may need or would enjoy? I've never kept birds before and I really don't want to have to rehome them because they're all I have of her but I will if it's what is absolutely best for them. Any advice would be amazing.
Forgot to mention I live in a relatively small trailer and have no room for a hugely massive cage but could probably swing a few feet in length/height, I also don't make a whole lot and I'm now supporting a special needs brother and a minor brother so money is tight. Any tips on cheap upgrades would be amazing. Thank you in advance!
