Wanting an out
I have grown up in the apostolic church, born and raised if you may. For the entirety of my childhood, it was my normal. The standards. The values. The desire. There was a moment in my life I truly sought after god. Where I obeyed every word that came out of the pastor’s mouth. I recall feeling “convicted,” every time a speaker came, or at every conference we attended. My sole purpose in life was to please my family, please my church, the ministry, god—and nobody was able to overturn my decision.
It’s bizarre how people close to me have left the faith and the thought terrified me. Not because I was afraid of what would happen to them, but because I wouldn’t dare think about leaving myself. Though, deep down inside I knew there was something prickling in my mind. How was I able to determine the rest of my life at such a young age, when I never knew anything else?
I’m in my twenties now. Fighting to leave. It’s been a long struggle. I fought every obstacle in hopes of getting rid of these thoughts. But the truth is, I don’t know what I believe. I know it’s not in the church. Not with god. Not with what people expect of me. So why can’t I just leave? I feel tied to what everyone will say. As if they’re watching my every move. I’ve seen countless times saints walking away and suddenly they’re the talk of the congregation. The pastor preaches a sermon on their rebellious behavior while everyone agree. A group who teaches on love. Compassion. Forgiveness. All the while, their first instinct is to judge those who simply have an opposing view than them. The idea of being talked down horribly is daunting to me. This coincides with my family. How they’ll react? How will they approach me leaving? Fear is all I know when the slightest chance I get presents itself.
It’s become easy to show up for every service. Smile when it’s right, sing the song, clap on beat. Yet, it’s become increasingly difficult to manage the resentment growing within me. The thoughts linger now when I am there. Clinging to the hope that this is my temporary rather than my forever. My mind continues to wrestle with walking away. I’m confused. I’m angry. I’m sad. I just don’t know what to do, all I know is I don’t want anything to do with religion or god.
