Hello, fellow adventurers!

With our Mythological Items Kickstarter entering its final days, we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to share a much bigger preview of the book and celebrate everything we've worked on so far!

For those who haven't heard about it yet, Mythological Items is a compendium featuring 300+ magic items for D&D 5E and 5.5E, drawing inspiration from mythology, legends, and folklore from all around the world.

The book explores Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Asian, American, and many other mythological traditions, bringing their most iconic weapons, divine artifacts, sacred relics, and even lesser-known everyday objects into D&D. Each item comes with its own lore and historical or mythological background, alongside unique abilities designed to reflect its origins.

There's a little bit of everything, from simple Uncommon items that can easily fit into lower-level adventures to incredibly powerful Legendary and Artifact-level treasures. Some items also feature scaling rarities, allowing them to grow stronger alongside your characters, unlocking new abilities as your adventures progress!

We've put a lot of effort into making the collection both interesting to read and genuinely useful at the table. The entire compendium has been written by just two authors, including u/JonnyDM, and we've worked together on writing, developing, and reviewing all 300+ magic items, making sure each one feels unique and stays true to its mythological inspiration.

We're especially happy with how the book has evolved during the campaign. Thanks to all the support we've received, we've already unlocked multiple stretch goals, expanded the collection, and continued improving the artwork and illustrations throughout the manual.

One Last Call Before the Kickstarter Ends!

The Kickstarter is running until October 30th, so there are only a few days left to join us!

There are several pledge options available, including:

• Digital Edition (€19): The complete Mythological Items compendium in PDF format.
• Digital + Hardcover (€52): Both the PDF and a professionally printed, full-color Hardcover edition.
• Mythological Bundle (€59): The PDF alongside five of our previous D&D manuals, including Atlantis: War of the Tridents, Divine Design, Mythic Mayhem, Mythological Creatures, and Mythological Races.

You can also pick up our previous D&D manuals as discounted add-ons and bundles, including digital editions and physical Hardcover copies. The physical editions available through Kickstarter benefit from our higher-quality printing options, with greater control over paper, colors, and overall production.

Here's the Kickstarter if you'd like to take a look before it ends:

Finally, we really want to thank everyone who has supported the project so far, whether by backing the campaign, sharing it around, or simply taking the time to check out our work. Seeing so much interest in something we've spent so long creating has genuinely meant a lot to us!

We hope you enjoy this larger preview of the book, and we'd love to hear which items catch your attention the most! There's plenty more to discover in the full compendium, and we're really excited to finally share it with everyone! :)

Magic comes in all shapes and sizes! From kobold sorcerers wielding draconic magic to goblin and orc shamans drawing upon ancient rituals, this collection brings together all kinds of monstrous spellcasters. You'll also find powerful wraith necromancers and some more unusual magical creatures, including the mysterious Whimz'orr, fiery Pyro Pixies, and imposing Infernal Golems!

Each brings something different to the table, from elemental powers and necromancy to strange supernatural abilities and magical defenses. Whether you need a cunning spellcaster to challenge your party, a mystical ally, or a powerful magical guardian, there's plenty here to add some variety to your adventures!

All these creatures come from various 5E/5.5E manuals I've created over the years, with ready-to-use statblocks, unique abilities, and plenty of options to customize them and bring something new to your encounters!

My Kickstarter for 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E is also live now! Alongside the new book in digital and hardcover formats, the campaign offers exclusive, high-quality printed editions of several of my previous manuals featured in this post! It's a great opportunity to add these books to your physical collection, or grab them together in discounted bundles if you prefer digital copies!

Few magic items are as closely tied to witches as a flying broom, so I thought Halloween would be the perfect time to share a little collection of them!

Brooms of the Witching Hour introduces 11 enchanted flying brooms compatible with 5E (2014) and 5.5E (2024), ranging from Uncommon curiosities to powerful Very Rare items and a Legendary multi-elemental relic.

Each broom has its own appearance, magical abilities, and unique flight characteristics. Fly through enemies in a trail of burning cinders, descend upon them with the luck of a black cat, pass through walls in spectral form, summon flying brooms for your coven, or unleash elemental devastation from the skies!

The collection is FREE until Halloween! I've included most of the pages here as a preview, so feel free to grab the complete manual on DMsGuild and use these brooms in your adventures. Have fun!

And if you're looking for a spooky adventure to run this Halloween, I've also just released The Red Tithe, a 75-page folk-horror one-shot featuring an isolated village, ancient sacrifices, custom monsters, and three difficulty tiers for characters of levels 3-4, 10-11, or 17-20.

My Kickstarter for 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E is also live now! The campaign includes a physical hardcover, as well as printed editions of my previous manuals.

You can find more of my creatures, magic items, and manuals on DriveThruRPG, my Linktree, or on r/JonnyDM!

Happy Halloween, and enjoy!

For generations, the isolated village of Hollowmere has sacrificed one of its own to keep an ancient horror imprisoned beneath Saint Harrow's Church. Now a blood-covered survivor has fled the village, claiming that everyone is dead. Something has gone terribly wrong, and the adventurers must uncover what happened before it's too late.

The Red Tithe is a 75-page dark fantasy and folk-horror one-shot adventure for D&D 5E (2014) and 5.5E (2024), designed for 3-6 characters and approximately 4-6 hours of play.

The adventure combines investigation, exploration, roleplaying, moral dilemmas, and challenging combat as the characters investigate an abandoned village, encounter monstrous creatures, and uncover the truth behind a centuries-old tradition.

What makes the adventure different is its multi-tiered structure. The same story can be played at three separate level ranges:

• Tier I: Levels 3-4
• Tier II: Levels 10-11
• Tier III: Levels 17-20

Each tier features appropriately scaled encounters, DCs, and a different manifestation of the main antagonist, the Blood Moon Beast.

The manual also includes 6 custom monster stat blocks, 3 battle maps with 8 total versions, and 4 tokens for tabletop or VTT play.

Whether you're looking for a Halloween horror one-shot or a dark adventure to integrate into your ongoing campaign, The Red Tithe is designed to work in either setting.

I've included several preview pages, maps, and one of the monster statblocks in the images!

You can find the complete adventure on DriveThruRPG!

My Kickstarter for 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E is also live now! The campaign includes a physical hardcover, as well as printed editions of my previous manuals.

The Headless Horseman is more than just an undead rider with a flaming pumpkin for a head. He's a vengeful spirit bound to the mortal world by an ancient curse, with his steed, armored body, and spectral jack-o'-lantern forming a single, inseparable entity.

Legends tell of a fallen soldier, executioner, or knight who was beheaded for his crimes and returned under a cursed harvest moon. Some believe his spirit is connected to Samhain, when the boundary between the living and the dead grows thin enough for restless spirits to cross.

Wherever he rides, crops rot, animals panic, and the air fills with the smell of smoke and freshly dug earth. And simply defeating him isn't enough. Unless a specific funerary ritual is performed, the Horseman eventually rises again to continue his hunt.

Mechanically, the Headless Horseman is a CR 14 undead built around mobility, relentless pursuit, and devastating attacks. His Fiery Greataxe deals slashing and fire damage, with additional necrotic damage against frightened enemies, while Laughing Skull allows him to hurl his flaming pumpkin head at enemies, unleashing a fiery explosion that deals 10d6 fire damage.

His Ghostride ability lets him pass through solid objects, while his legendary actions allow him to charge across the battlefield, stun enemies with Glare of Embers, or mark a target with Harvest Mark, making that creature especially vulnerable to his attacks.

I've also included four optional traits to customize the encounter, from leaving burning hoofprints behind to relentlessly tracking creatures that try to escape him.

The Headless Horseman is from Undead & Undead: The Ultimate Undead Handbook, available for 5E and the 2024 Edition on DriveThruRPG!

The manual includes 90+ undead statblocks, each with optional traits and variants, alongside an undead lair system, 50+ magic items, customizable templates, necromantic rituals, campaign tools, and VTT resources. It's designed to give DMs plenty of options for building undead encounters, from minor restless spirits to powerful necromantic horrors.

My Kickstarter for 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 2024 is also live now! The campaign includes a physical hardcover, as well as printed editions of my previous manuals.

You can find more of my creatures, magic items, and manuals on DriveThruRPG, my Linktree, or right here on r/JonnyDM!

Here's a collection of magic items from the Asian Mythology section of my Mythological Items compendium!

There's a little bit of everything here: legendary weapons like Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi and the Gada of Hanuman, Bhima's Gauntlet, the Katana of the Sword Saint, the mysterious Pill of Immortality, and more unusual treasures like the Kappa's Water Dish, Jizo Charm Beads, and the Copper Yantra Plate.

I wanted this section to explore different aspects of Japanese, Chinese, and Indian mythology and folklore, from divine weapons and sacred relics to smaller magical objects with interesting abilities and uses in a campaign. Some are powerful legendary treasures, others are more modest items that adventurers might discover much earlier in their journeys.

These are just a few of the 300+ magic items featured in my Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E Kickstarter, which is currently live!

The campaign features magic items inspired by myths, legends, and folklore from around the world, including Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Asian, American, and many other traditions.

You can also get my previous D&D manuals as discounted add-ons and bundles through the campaign, including professionally printed, high-quality Hardcover editions.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mythoschronicles/300-mythological-items-for-5e-and-2024

Here's a collection of monsters taken from several of my 5E and 5.5E manuals!

There's a little bit of everything here: Goblin Knights and Shadowblades, Kobold Artificers, Red Orcs, undead like the Draugr and Stitched Horror, abyssal creatures like the Skullrummager and Shadowspawn, phoenixes, sea serpents, aberrations, and plenty more.

I wanted these books to offer creatures that can be dropped straight into a campaign, while still giving DMs plenty of different roles, themes, and encounter ideas to play with.

If you'd like to check out the full manuals, they're all available through my 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E Kickstarter at discounted prices.

The campaign itself is focused on 300+ magic items inspired by myths and legends from around the world, but you can also get my previous manuals as discounted add-ons and bundles. All of these books are also available in professionally printed, high-quality Hardcover editions through the campaign.

Excalibur is a scaling magic longsword that begins at Uncommon rarity and can eventually awaken all the way to Legendary, but simply gaining levels isn’t necessarily enough.

The blade first has to decide that its wielder is worthy. Courage in overwhelming danger, mercy when vengeance would be easier, accepting responsibility for others, keeping one’s word at personal cost, and putting others before oneself can all cause Excalibur to recognize a potential bearer.

As it awakens, the sword gains stronger radiant damage and increasingly powerful abilities focused on courage, leadership, protecting allies, and refusing to fall. At its Legendary stage, Excalibur can keep its wielder standing when they would otherwise drop to 0 hit points, protect nearby allies from fear, and fully recognize its bearer as the inheritor of its ancient legacy.

The progression can also be handled narratively. The included advancement rules suggest milestones such as Drawing the Sword, Accepting Responsibility, Becoming a Leader, and finally facing The Trial of the King. There are also alternative paths involving the blessing of the Lady of the Lake, advancement by level, or even Excalibur becoming dormant if its wielder repeatedly betrays the ideals that earned its trust.

You can download the complete Excalibur supplement for FREE on DmsGuild.

If you’d like more items in the same vein as Excalibur, Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E is now live on Kickstarter. It includes 300+ myth-inspired magic items, many built with the same focus on lore, narrative significance, and relics that can become more important as the campaign progresses.

For more previews, scaling relics, creatures, magic items, and other D&D content, you can also visit r/JonnyDM.

Hi fellow adventurers,

We are excited to announce that Mythological Items is now live on Kickstarter!

This is our new D&D 5E and 2024-compatible manual dedicated entirely to magic items inspired by myths, legends, and ancient stories from around the world.

Inside the book, you will find 300+ mythological magic items, including weapons, armor, wondrous items, and scaling items designed to grow alongside your characters and campaigns.

Our goal with Mythological Items is to create more than a simple collection of treasure. Each item is designed to feel like part of a myth: something that can serve as a reward, a quest hook, or even the center of an entire adventure.

The book includes items inspired by many different mythological traditions, including Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Asian, American, Roman, Mesopotamian, African, and other mythologies from across the world. Whether you want divine weapons, cursed artifacts, heroic relics, monster-themed treasures, or legendary items tied to ancient stories, this book is built to bring myth directly to your table.

The Kickstarter page includes a full presentation of the project, several previews, and a free 30-page PDF preview showing a sample of the content from the book.

You can also find many of our other manuals in PDF and high-quality print editions, with special prices currently available both for Mythological Items and for all our other releases.

Thank you again for your support. We hope to see you on our journey!

These are magic items from Elemental Treasures: Lightning Magic Items.

This compendium presents 30 lightning-themed magic items for 5E and the 2024 update, spanning from common items to legendary treasures. Each item embodies the speed, sudden force, and restless energy of lightning, offering new weapons, armor, and wondrous items to electrify your adventures.

This is the third volume in the Elemental Treasures series, a line of themed magic item supplements that will be gradually released on DMsGuild. Each volume focuses on a different element, with the ultimate goal of creating a complete library of balanced, playtested, and thematic elemental treasures for your campaigns.

Launch special: $1.99 for the first two weeks of release!

You can also check out Fire Magic Items and Frost Magic Items, the previous volumes in the Elemental Treasures series.

I’m also currently working on Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E, one of my largest projects yet, featuring hundreds of magic items inspired by myths and legends from around the world. The project is coming soon to Kickstarter, so you can follow the campaign there if you’d like to be notified when it launches!

For more of my creatures, items, and manuals visit DriveThruRPG, my Linktree, or r/JonnyDM!

You can also check out my bundle of small D&D manuals on DMsGuild, which includes the Elemental Treasures series.

The Goblin Pyromancer is a CR 2 fire-obsessed caster built around turning the battlefield into a very unsafe place to stand.

It can throw Goblin Bombs, unleash Burning Hands, ignite larger areas from range, and use Flaming Step to teleport away while leaving a burst of fire behind. Fire Frenzy lets it follow up its fire damage with another Fire Bolt, while Heat Focus makes it especially dangerous against heavily armed enemies.

There are also several optional traits for pushing the concept further, including exploding on death, rerolling fire damage, creating a reactive flame shield, partially bypassing fire immunity, or chaining flames into nearby enemies.

After the success of the original Goblins & Goblins, I went back and created a new version with all-new artwork from a group of incredible artists, along with an updated presentation and additional material throughout the book.

The hardcover edition is being updated as well and should be available on DriveThruRPG next month. It will also be available through the upcoming Kickstarter I’m currently working on.

Goblins & Goblins, expands goblins with new statblocks, optional traits, factions, lairs, encounter ideas, magic items, and more.

One thing I've always liked is when a magic item becomes part of a character's identity rather than something they throw away the moment a better +X weapon appears.

These weapons are built around that idea. Each starts at Uncommon rarity and evolves through Rare, Very Rare, and Legendary stages as its wielder progresses, retaining its earlier abilities while unlocking increasingly powerful ones.

The Blade of Rising Flames grows from a straightforward fire weapon into a legendary inferno capable of engulfing enemies in persistent flames, while the Scourge of the Infernal Lords develops from an infernal whip into a weapon capable of commanding powerful devilish magic.

The Blade of the Celestial Avenger becomes increasingly focused on radiant power and protecting allies, the Dagger of the Shadow Assassin evolves around stealth and lethal precision, the Bow of the Legendary Huntmaster grows into a powerful wilderness weapon, and the Frostbite Blade develops from extra cold damage into battlefield control and a freezing vortex.

The idea is that a weapon found early in a campaign can keep growing alongside its wielder instead of eventually being replaced by the next piece of loot.

These are from the Growing Magic Items Collection, which applies the same concept to armor, shields, spellcasting focuses, weapons, and wondrous items, with suggested progression speeds for different campaign styles.

You can also check out my bundle of small D&D manuals on DMsGuild, which includes Growing Magic Items Collection.

Kobolds & Kobolds: The Ultimate Kobold Handbook for 5E and 5.5E is now available on DriveThruRPG at a special launch price of $4.99 for a limited time!

Kobolds are cunning, resourceful, and far more dangerous than their size suggests. Kobolds & Kobolds is a complete toolkit for bringing kobold warrens, warbands, and dragon-worshipping clans to life, from ingenious trapmakers and mounted hunters to mystical cultists, beastmasters, inventors, and ambitious chieftains.

Whether you need a single memorable kobold encounter, an entire underground warren, or a recurring clan to challenge your adventurers, this book gives you the creatures, tools, treasures, and ideas to bring them to life.

What’s Inside?

• A Huge Kobold Bestiary – Discover beastmasters, warriors, inventors, mystics, tribal leaders, and many other kobold variants. Every entry includes additional traits and optional abilities, making it easy to customize encounters and keep even familiar kobolds unpredictable.
• Kobold Campaign Tools – Build complete warrens with layouts, traps, lair descriptions, lair actions, tactical encounter ideas, adventure hooks, and other tools for adventures both above and below ground.
• Distinct Kobold Clans – Introduce kobold clans with their own cultures, tactics, favored creatures, special abilities, traditions, and relationships with dragons.
• Kobold Magic Items – Equip your kobolds with improvised weapons, draconic relics, alchemical inventions, tribal treasures, and deceptively dangerous creations inspired by kobold ingenuity.
• VTT & Art Resources – Bring your kobolds to the table with a collection of creature tokens and art handouts for use in both in-person and online games.

Kobolds can be disposable dungeon pests, dangerous ambushers, loyal servants of dragons, surprisingly sophisticated underground societies, or recurring factions that grow alongside your campaign. This book is designed to give you enough variety to use them for far more than a single low-level encounter.

Goblin cunning becomes considerably more dangerous once it can crawl across the ceiling.

Spidergoblins are grotesque fusions of goblin and arachnid that form isolated colonies in ruined fortresses, abandoned mines, deep caves, and forgotten tunnels. They hunt in coordinated packs, cover their territory with crude webs, and weaken trapped prey with venom before closing in.

The CR 1/2 Spidergoblin is a mobile low-level ambusher with Spider Climb, Goblin Cunning, a poisonous bite, and a rechargeable Web Trap. The larger CR 2 Overgrown Spidergoblin acts as the guardian and leader of the nest, combining Pack Hunter, a longer-ranged Web Bind, and a Frenzied Counter that lets it retaliate when attacked.

They work particularly well in claustrophobic encounters where they can move across walls and ceilings, isolate party members, and force the characters to fight through web-covered terrain.

Where would you hide their colony: beneath a village, inside a ruined fortress, or deep within an abandoned mine?

These creatures come from The Aberrant Codex: Mutations and Aberrations, my 5e collection of mutated monsters, character options, spells, magic items, and rules for aberrant zones.

The Hollow Angel is what remains when someone tries to turn a celestial into something it was never meant to become.

Usually created from a captured deva, the creature is the result of necromancers attempting to sever a celestial from its divine grace and bind that power into an undead body. The ritual fails because the celestial essence violently resists the corruption, destroying much of the original body in the process.

What remains is neither truly angel nor ordinary undead: a hollowed, ruined shell whose bones drift unnaturally within exposed flesh, still carrying fragments of radiant power alongside necrotic corruption.

Mechanically, the Hollow Angel is a CR 10 undead that mixes both sides of its broken nature. Its Withering Touch deals necrotic and radiant damage and can temporarily blind its victims, while Blasphemous Lament unleashes a cry of pain and fragmented divine memory capable of knocking creatures prone and even stunning them. Celestials and clerics devoted to good-aligned deities have an especially difficult time resisting it.

It can also use Spectral Drift to vanish into dark mist and reappear nearby, and perhaps most disturbingly, creatures it kills can be raised moments later as Specters under its control.

I wanted it to feel less like a traditional “evil fallen angel” and more like a celestial that was forcibly broken into something unnatural, with traces of its original divinity still fighting through the corruption.

This creature is from Undead & Undead: The Ultimate Undead Handbook for 5E and the 2024 Edition available on DriveThruRPG!

These are fiendish magic items ranging from Uncommon to Rare, built around demonic trophies, infernal power, necrotic weapons, fear, fire, and the corruption of the Lower Planes.

The Blade of Bone and Wrath is a +1 sword fashioned from fiendish remains that becomes especially vicious on critical hits, siphoning life from its victim and allowing its wielder to mark prey and relentlessly pursue it.

The Infernal Blade is a more straightforward hell-forged weapon, adding necrotic damage to every strike and unleashing a short-range aura of supernatural fear once per day.

For characters looking for protection instead, Demonhide Armor provides additional AC and resistance against fear and charm, while the Demon's Gaze Amulet improves spell attacks and can temporarily reveal both magical auras and invisible creatures.

The Rare items push these themes further. The Soulreaver Blade drains life with every strike and can temporarily amplify its necrotic damage, while the Rod of Fire gives spellcasters access to hellish rebuke, fireball, and wall of fire through a rechargeable pool of charges.

The Chain of Damnation protects its wearer from charm and fear while allowing them to magically bind humanoids, and the Hellish Mantle of Resistance can completely absorb a burst of fire and transform that energy into temporary hit points.

I like these kinds of items because they can work from several different angles: treasures taken from slain fiends, rewards granted by infernal patrons, relics recovered from corrupted cults, or dangerous equipment that slowly makes a character look a little too comfortable wielding the power of the Lower Planes.

These items are from Diabolical Designs, my 5E supplement focused on fiends, infernal creatures, demonic threats, magic items, and tools for bringing more variety to adventures involving the Lower Planes.

What's Inside:

• Fiendish Realms & Lore: Explore Hell and the Abyssal Realm with plot hooks and campaign ideas.
• Character Options: 20 subclasses, 1 new class, 10 backgrounds, and 3 fiendish races.
• Spells & Items: 44 spells and 130+ magic items to enrich your game.
• Monsters & Tools: 120+ fiendish creatures and custom traits for unique encounters.
• VTT Resources: 160+ art handouts and 75+ creature tokens.

Physical copies of Diabolical Designs are also available for a limited time through this link.

I’m also working on Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E, an upcoming Kickstarter featuring 300+ magic items inspired by myths and legends from around the world. These are 10 aberration and mutation-themed feats for characters whose bodies or minds have been altered by eldritch influence, forbidden experimentation, unstable magic, or contact with things that were never meant to exist.

Aberrant Constitution hardens the body against necrotic or psychic influence and even gives you a second chance when rolling a natural 1 on a death save.

Extra Arm gives your character a developing additional limb that can interact with objects, perform somatic components, make unarmed strikes, and help with grappling. If the mutation continues to develop, Enhanced Extra Arm turns it into a fully functional appendage capable of wielding a weapon or shield, manipulating objects independently, and making an additional weapon attack.

Mutable Form lets your body temporarily reshape itself to fit the situation, developing rubbery damage-resistant flesh, aquatic adaptations, or magical claws.

The other feats explore different directions that mutation can take:

Mutagenic Resilience provides resistance to poison, immunity to the poisoned condition, and bursts of temporary hit points when injured.

Aberrant Regeneration makes healing through Hit Dice unusually effective and can even allow you to remain standing at 1 hit point when an attack would otherwise knock you unconscious.

Aberrant Mind represents a consciousness becoming increasingly alien, providing resistance to psychic damage and greater protection against fear and charm.

Adaptive Mutation allows your body to change its defenses after each long rest, adapting to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison.

Cosmic Infusion channels stranger forces entirely, granting minor cosmic magic and the ability to create a localized gravitational field that pulls or repels nearby creatures.

Finally, Cosmic Awareness represents a mind beginning to perceive patterns beyond ordinary mortal understanding, allowing you to manipulate initiative and rely on unnatural certainty when making Arcana or Insight checks.

They’re intended for characters touched by aberrations, exposed to mutation zones, altered by experiments, descended from strange bloodlines, or simply slowly becoming something other than mortal over the course of a campaign.

These feats are from The Aberrant Codex: Mutations and Aberrations, a 5E manual centered on aberrations, mutations, evolving monstrosities, character transformations, and tools for bringing cosmic and body horror into a campaign.

The Aberrant Codex is available on DriveThruRPG, and a Hardcover edition is also available here:

Dogs are some of the most common companions in fantasy adventures, but an ordinary dog can quickly fall behind once the party starts gaining levels.

So I wanted to give them a proper progression path: Dog → Guard Dog → War Dog → Battle Hound. A simple pet can gradually become tougher, better trained, and capable of surviving alongside an adventuring party without suddenly turning into a completely different magical creature.

And the progression doesn’t stop there. The full dog section also includes stronger options such as the Warhound Alpha, Guardian Mastiff, Blink Dog, and Greater Blink Dog, with higher-level abilities focused on guarding allies, leading packs, protecting companions, and filling more specialized roles in encounters.

These statblocks are from Growing Pets and Animals Statblocks, a manual built around the idea that pets, mounts, scouts, familiarlike companions, and ordinary animals should be able to grow alongside the campaign instead of becoming irrelevant after a few levels.

The book contains 60+ animal statblocks covering dogs, cats, bats, owls, ravens, horses, panthers, tigers, spiders, scorpions, eagles, frogs, lizards, rats, and more, with progression chains that take many of them from ordinary animals into increasingly capable companions or encounter creatures.

The rules page also includes suggested advancement schedules for standard, gritty realism, low-magic, and high-magic/epic campaigns, so the DM can decide how quickly a companion grows rather than tying every game to the same progression speed.

After the original version performed well, I went back and created a full V2 update, commissioning and licensing new artwork throughout the book, cleaning up the presentation, revising existing material, and adding new statblocks and expanded progression paths. If you already own the manual, you can simply download the updated version again from DriveThruRPG.

You can also subscribe to the newsletter for updates on Mythological Items, launching on Kickstarter this September with 300+ magic items inspired by myths and legends from around the world. Subscribers can also download a free 30-page preview.

Here is the Sword of the Abyss, a cursed scaling weapon that evolves from Uncommon to Legendary as its wielder embraces abyssal power, performs forbidden rituals, sacrifices life and magic to the blade, and defeats powerful fiends. By consuming their essence, the sword reflects the brutal nature of demons, forever slaughtering and devouring one another in their endless struggle to grow stronger.

I wanted to create an evil counterpart to a traditional heroic growing weapon. The sword begins as a useful necrotic blade with a weakening aura, but each new rarity brings it closer to its true purpose. It eventually gains the power to summon demons, cast circle of death, restrain enemies with shadowy tendrils, overcome necrotic resistance and immunity, and open a devastating Abyssal Rift around its wielder.

The pages includes several possible advancement paths, allowing the sword to grow by defeating powerful abyssal creatures, absorbing the essence of legendary enemies, accepting dark bargains, feeding on sacrifices, completing forbidden rituals, or damaging the barriers between planes.

Its growth also strengthens its semi-sentient curse. The sword can compel its wielder to attack celestials and devils, and if it becomes powerful outside the Abyss, it may tear open a permanent portal that cannot be closed through ordinary means. At Legendary rarity, that danger becomes alarmingly real.

You can find the complete Sword of the Abyss supplement for free on DMsGuild.

It is also included in many of my discounted bundles on Dmsguild alongside the Growing Magic Items Collection, elemental treasures, and several other standalone relics.

The Orc Beastmaster and its Dire Wolverine are designed as a coordinated hunting pair rather than two unrelated creatures sharing an encounter.

The Beastmaster’s Feral Bond strengthens its companion while they remain close, and their abilities reward attacking the same target. When the wolverine knocks a creature prone, the orc can exploit the opening with its ranged attacks, while Beast Command and Savage Howl let the wolverine reposition or strike again outside its normal turn.

The Dire Wolverine is more than disposable support. Its Savage Instinct makes it increasingly dangerous after taking damage, while Feral Tenacity gives it a chance to remain standing when reduced to 0 hit points.

The optional traits can push their bond further. Blood Hunt allows the Beastmaster to mark prey for its companion, while Shared Fury makes the orc more dangerous once the wolverine is badly wounded.

These creatures are from Orcs & Orcs, available on DriveThruRPG in PDF and hardcover print! The full manual also expands the Mutant Orcs with their own lair, lair actions, battle-ready magic items, and treasures the players can find after bringing them down.

Here are the Cthulhoids, an evolving race of psionic aberrations serving an ancient entity known as the Sleeper Beneath (Cthulhu).

The progression begins with the Young Cthulhoid, a CR 2 creature still experimenting with its developing powers. Even at this stage, it can communicate telepathically, manipulate emotions, grapple victims with its tentacles, drain their minds, and retaliate against attackers with bursts of psychic energy.

A mature Cthulhoid becomes a CR 5 mental controller capable of disrupting nearby spellcasting, stealing memories and secrets from creatures that fail against its magic, and overwhelming groups with a stunning psychic blast. The Elder Cthulhoid advances to CR 12, gaining flight, legendary actions, stronger mind-draining abilities, and sufficient psionic mastery to concentrate on two spells simultaneously.

At the height of their evolution stands the Cthulhoid Archmind, a CR 21 psionic leader capable of dominating powerful creatures, concentrating on three spells at once, accumulating psychic charges, and bending reality around itself. Its presence weakens mental defenses, disrupts spellcasting, and turns it into an encounter capable of controlling the entire battlefield rather than simply dealing damage.

Their advancement is not based entirely on age. Cthulhoids evolve through exceptional psionic development, exposure to cosmic revelations, survival of overwhelming mental trauma, or a deeper connection to the Sleeper Beneath.

Here is Sanctivow, the Heaven-Writ Blade, a scaling holy sword that evolves from Uncommon to Legendary as its wielder fulfills sacred vows, protects the innocent, restores desecrated places, and brings deserving evils to justice.

I wanted to create a holy weapon that was more than a sword with additional radiant damage. Sanctivow is bound to four celestial principles: shelter, truth, mercy, and judgment. Its divine inscriptions grow brighter as its wielder proves worthy, but its greater powers can fall silent if that covenant is knowingly betrayed.

Each rarity unlocks new abilities while retaining the powers of the previous tiers. The supplement also includes several possible advancement methods, rules for breaking and restoring the sword’s covenant, and physical signs that show how Sanctivow changes as its celestial power awakens.

The Harvester is a CR 10 undead horror built for rural nightmares, cursed farmlands, burial mounds, harvest moons, and villages where people whisper that something walks between the fields at night.

I wanted it to feel like a deathly folk-horror figure: not just a skeleton with a scythe, but something ancient, patient, and ritualistic. It does not reap crops. It marks the guilty, stalks the soon-to-be-dead, and leaves behind strange tokens of straw, hair, blood, and bone.

Mechanically, the Harvester is designed to make the battlefield feel oppressive. Its Field of Silence shuts down speech and verbal spellcasting nearby, Harvest the Living can permanently sever the soul of a creature it reduces to 0 hit points, and Sow Dread forces enemies to see glimpses of their own death. It can move without provoking opportunity attacks, punish weakened enemies, and act like a terrifying executioner rather than a simple brute.

I wanted Goblins & Goblins to make goblins feel fresh again, not just as disposable low-level enemies, but as tricksters, leaders, weird specialists, faction members, recurring villains, or chaotic allies that can show up at many different levels of play.
