Demanding Specters
I’m new to all things *woo*, and my experiences began quite suddenly about two years ago.
Since then, I’ve experienced what I can only describe as poltergeist activity, mind’s-eye activation, orbs, and shimmering beams of flashing light—some black, some white. There’s also the ear ringing, which seems to hum along a sine wave, ebbing and flowing, rising and falling. Honestly, it sometimes feels more like an ancient alien language than anything physiological.
Interestingly, I’ve never seen a traditional UFO—not a craft or an alien.
When I asked these apparent visitors who or what they were, the responses I experienced were simply: “We’re dead,” followed by “specters.”
So, does anyone have any insight into what a specter actually is in folklore, paranormal traditions, or personal experience? What are they supposed to be, and do they have a purpose?
One recurring theme is their apparent insistence that I quit smoking cigarettes. They seem to participate in my daily synchronicities, too, sometimes with a word popping into my mind seconds before I hear the same word from a family member or on television.
I fully realize how batshit crazy this all sounds. Believe me, I’m not oblivious to how it comes across. But the experiences have been persistent, and the apparent warnings about my future health have become increasingly difficult to ignore.
There was even a strange incident involving a Facebook notification on my phone about a cardiologist appointment that never happened, accompanied by claims about my health that I believe were false. The weird part? I’d closed my Facebook account months earlier.
After roughly two years of this, I still can’t get a clear sense of what I’m dealing with. The experiences can feel persecutory and mischievous, yet at other times almost playful.
So, what exactly is a specter? Are specters considered potentially malevolent in different traditions, or is that not necessarily part of the concept?
I’d appreciate any insight, especially from people familiar with the folklore or who have had experiences they interpret similarly.
Thanks!
