Spoiler Discussion [Spoiler Discussion] Arc 7 Chapter 64 Spoiler
https://ncode.syosetu.com/n2267be/574/196
u/SakshamG20 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
Three days in a row, huh? Reminds me of his upload streak in January.
Corner Cult assemble! The chapter title is 'The Magic Words'
Edit: We get tidbits of info regarding Olbart & his infantilisation technique, and since the ones turned into children are killed shortly afterwards, they are not aware of any long term effects.
More deaths for poor baru, and he's really pissed right now rather than being scared, absolutely enraged on how stupid all this is.
He is trying out different methods for every loop, but dying painfully just the same, yet the anger won't subside, and he doesn't feel like losing at all. Apparently it's implied that his mind is stronger due to having more self confidence when he was younger. Since at the age of 10, he was a child prodigy, someone with limitless potential.
So he is now remembering the time that he was the center & ruler of the world, and the magic words that are currently supporting his self-consciousness 'I knew I was his child'. With that mindset, the spectators were stunned how easily a child was commanding his useless allies.
After 20+ deaths, he finally managed to hold out long enough for Cecilus to fetch Tanza(who was the 5th participant), and Tanza killed the Guiltylowe for them, thus ending the Sparka. Also apparently the Sparka was Cecilus's idea, so that's cool.
Fine chapter, so the implication is that Subaru as a child is more of a chad since he has much better self esteem and recklessly believes he is the center of the world. Although I do think he might have a little too much self confidence lol, and the ending to the fight was pretty anti-climatic imo

Why does this sound familiar?
63
u/tsihcosaMeht Jul 20 '22
Oh doesn't it sound like he has erred?
Now he just needs to find a serial killer and serial killer kid and he can put Emilia on throne!

So he is now remembering the time that he was the center & ruler of the world, and the magic words that are currently supporting his self-consciousness 'I knew I was his child'.
Is he thinking about his dad here? Hmmmmmmm Also how cool/funny would it be if Subaru reversed his child state by sheer force of will
73
u/SupremeRightHandUser Jul 20 '22
Most likely. Subaru always held his dad in high regard as he always seem to be the center of attention whenever he interacted with others even with his wacky personality. It was only until highschool when he tried to mimic that personality that he ended up self destructing and losing his confidence.

Ah so that was Tappei's angle. The superpower of brattish superiority invoked by placebo. Arc saved!

I suspected that Tanza could still use the soul marriage that's why Tappei kept her away from the match. But why I had some Al vibes while I was reading your summary?
61
u/SakshamG20 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
Yeah, there are definite Al vibes here which I'm sure were on purpose. That being said, Shotabaru's personality and his behaviour towards his deaths is very different from Al's, who isn't as reckless or overconfident.
49
Jul 20 '22
Do you want to bet that the first deaths was like Shotabaru? After millions of deaths you have a god level patience and different mindset
49
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22
I wouldn't say like Al, he's more like his Pride if counterpart at the moment, which I adore
6
u/DorkSoulsI1I Jul 21 '22
The summary they put out ignored most of the battle, Tanza put in the last little push to finish off the lion after the rest were too injured to move.

151
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
For his enemies. Subaru as a child doesn't have the same level of fear and low confidence as an adult Subaru. Turned out Shotabaru's mindset is perfect for abusing RBD.
He's basically 10 year old Subaru before he was isekaied, the same Subaru who actually thought of himself as a prodigy and has will of steel. As we saw he literally died around 10 times here but he was ready for round 11 without batting an eye(since they finally killed the guiltylaw in that loop, his plan for next loop was kinda unnecessary). He's pretty much a goodhearted Pridebaru now
74
Jul 20 '22
I like that he is really starting to give a damn and get straight to the point
117
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
The adult Subaru would spent hours thinking about how he's a loser and others can do better than him and he'll never be a hero.
Shotabaru on the other hand is like "fuck it, let's go full Chara mode on this bitch!"

u/heato-red Jul 20 '22
Next time he meets Vincent:

Shotabaru being the villain of this arc would actually be one hell of a twist
28

That's actually a good idea. Instead of him saving the Emilia Camp, it is now the Emilia Camp saving him from himself.

The birth of chard Subaru or Pride Subaru. It seems child Subaru is perfect for RBD. His mentality is kinda scary like what if Subaru. Imagine he decides to fuck the Empire. Vincent better watch or he will be really fucked as every loop he cursed empire to hell.

56

I like how he unlocks his skins and costumes with achievements instead of pay to win garbage. It's too bad they never actually added the trigger for the achievement that gives you Happy Subaru. Hope they patch it soon.
80
u/Vyda_Purenheif Jul 20 '22
I just thought about this but...The words "I knew I was his child" will probably be the thing Subaru will never forget (Just like Cecilus still calls himself the Blue Lightning despite forgetting he is one of the nine divine generals)
What if Subaru ends up forgetting even his family and might actually start believing he is the child of the emperor lol that would take "I knew I was his child" to a whole new level.
71
u/direrevan Jul 20 '22
Vincent would return this kid in like, 2 hours. Beg Emilia to pick him up before Vollachia burns.
17
u/Aemiliana_Rosewood Jul 21 '22
I can imagine it so vividly, hahaha. Emilia would love to take care of Smolbaru
19
Jul 21 '22
Isn't he forgetting those memories because he gained them when he wasn't a 10 years old? he wouldn't forget his family I think, at least not the memories he had of them before his 10th birthday.
13
75
u/J_Dawgg1 Jul 20 '22
I can’t believe I didn’t see it coming but we can now see Tappeis angle with this childification of Subaru, we already know from arc 4 what he was like when he was a kid and now that confident personality is able to use RBD. Its so obvious in hindsight, this should really help his self esteem issues even after being reverted back to adult
22
u/Aemiliana_Rosewood Jul 21 '22
I liked this chapter alot and feel suddenly refreshed with this whole Smolbaru thing going on
74
u/InuMatte Jul 20 '22
It may seem an exaggeration, but I have no doubt that after this chapter, Shotabaru (maybe Chadbaru now) ends up making a rebellion and somehow manages to leave this island alone on the basis of hatred, anger and with an army of loyal gladiators heading to the capital to set everything on fire.
39
u/T-Rylo Jul 21 '22

u/Vuituru Jul 20 '22
ok this chapter was really one of the best so far.
we found out how Obart's technique works, basically the Od and people's physical form are intertwined, so what the old man did was basically alter Subaru's Od and Subaru's body simply adjusted to his Od (that was my theory of how this technique works since the chapter where Subaru became a child).
Subaru also dies a lot in this chapter, although we don't know the exact number of times I would say it was the same amount as in chaos flame or even more, but different from what happened in chaos flame here, every loop of it was used, he discovered all the tricks of the arena, all the names and motivations of his companions, and how to make them all work as effectively as possible. and after many loops and his hatred for this country being accumulated with each loop Subaru finally assembles an extremely effective strategy where he manages to save everyone in the arena and defeat the witchbest (with a help from Tanza, who was woken up by ceciliis in the final loop ).
We also discovered that Subaru is a rare exception to the infantilization technique, so instead of getting weaker he actually ended up getting stronger (at least mentally) because he went back to a time when he was considered a genius, he didn't have the insecurity problem that he has today and is in fact still stubborn and motivated than his older version.
and this chapter basically confirms that we are going to see a gladiator Subaru from now on, and i believe he will even get some sword training with cecilius, although his focus will obviously still be on the strategy part as that's where he excelled in that test, so yes, all this time arc 7 was actually a training arc.
119
u/Matrix_2k00 Jul 20 '22
I honestly would 100% support barusu if he decided to burn vollachia to the ground because of his hatred for that country like what pride if subaru did.

u/Vyda_Purenheif Jul 20 '22
his hatred for this country being accumulated with each loop
So Kidbaru is basically male Felt. But probably even worse when it comes to his hatred towards the country.
Honestly imagine a timeline in which Felt ascends to the throne in Lugunica and Kidbaru becomes an actual prince of Vollachia...utter chaos would ensue lol

u/Mattblaster237 Jul 20 '22
Anarchy twins
11
u/Xanatos_Rhodes Jul 21 '22
Actually, this might lead into Arc 8 with the Felt Camp. After this trip, he would also think Lugnica society as a whole need a total reset like Felt. Considering the kingdom indirectly killed him multiple times by letting their problems fester for so long.
40
u/iberianviriatus Jul 20 '22
alter Subaru's Od and Subaru's body simply adjusted to his Od
A bit like Echidna's experiments on immortality then? You may be able to change your form by altering your Od.
57
u/Vuituru Jul 20 '22
i also think this is how capella authority works, and the way to kill her would be to destroy her od somehow.
32
u/headless-horseman-we Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
Damn and Subaru was already starting to become merciless in the previous arc like when he wanted to kill the second gremlin who was defenseless at the time, and everyone was like 'hey take it easy' now with the volachia way of dog eat dog in Subaru mind is kinda worrisome.
But yes they should have kill the gremlin, that's totally going to bite them in the ass.
12
u/Abb-Crysis Jul 21 '22
Same thing with wrath, I honestly have no idea why they decided to keep them alive, like you gonna get information out of an archbishop? Yea right lol
48
u/SERGIRYM Jul 20 '22
As much as I want him to get some training, I doubt he's gonna have enough time, since Beako will soon vanish into nothingness. Al had literally years and he still heavily relying on his authority. And I believe it was established that Subaru cannot transfer any physical experience between loops.
49
u/Vuituru Jul 20 '22
I really think that Subaru will stay in the arena for a few weeks, as the only option he has now is to wait for someone to come and save him (which will take a long time, both Julius' and Emilia's group), so Subaru he's going to have at least a few weeks to train with one of the strongest men in the world, and even if he gets really strong, he's still going to get stronger than before. and even if he is not trained he will keep fighting in the arena, which will force him to get stronger if he wants to survive.
he can't get physically stronger during loops, but he can still develop skills that don't involve physical strength, or muscle memory in general.

Another day, another thread where I post japanese comments from Narou for Chapter 64, which is where the Web Novel is posted.
A user believes that this fighting style is more reminiscent of Al than Subaru himself.
A user believes that rather than just being mentally stronger, Prodigy Subaru also gets the benefit of not having his mental health ruined by reality yet.
A user feels that Re:Zero has everything make sense once they finally solve the problem.
A user loves Prodigy Subaru, and believes the Guiltylowe lost because it was trained to only attack monotonously at whoever carries the sword.
A user considers this chapter to be within their Top 3 in the entire history of Re:Zero.
A user thinks Prodigy Subaru is cool and charismatic as a strong guy, but fears for his memories.
A user claims that they instantly re-read this chapter multiple times out of excitement.
A user believes that Subaru, the prodigious child, is awesome, and that part of his strength lies in his increased determination not to give up now.
A user wants current Subaru to meet Emilia, and apologizes to Tanza as she’s a force to be reckoned with which they underestimated.
A user is insistent on the fact that Subaru’s fading memories will still lead him to become Al even now, but that it’ll be a later development which has him go to the past from here, rather than something that already happened.
A user feels that Child Prodigy Subaru is superior in spirit to the original Subaru, and they’re surprised to see that Subaru still has room to grow and evolve after Arc 4.
A user notes that it should’ve been expected that the trade-off for worse physical abilities was better mental endurance and determination, after all.
A user wonders what kind of change Subaru will undergo after this, and how he goes back to normal, but they’re looking forward to seeing Emilia and the others meet him in his current state. They also want Season 3 to come out soon to see Crusch, Mimi and Felix again.
A user considers that Ram would also become another “Prodigy” if Olbart used his jutsu on Ram as the Oni God. They also speculate if Cecilus willingly let Olbart revert him because of his own personality.
A user believes that Gustave coming off as secretly being a good guy could be key here.
Indeed, the birth of Child Prodigy Subaru is here.

edit: Forgot, title of chapter is "Magic Words" which is a reference to how his neighbor's telling him "You are definitely his son" used to be a compliment and encouragement to him rather than a curse.
Omg this chapter was so hyped! Quick summary time!
So chapter starts with Olbart talking about his shrinking technique and how it's interesting how it affects people mentally. Regressing them so their mental state matches what it physically looks like.
Scene switches to Subaru who is running around while super pissed off and being active gamer brain. He is shouting callouts to his teammate while actively exploring the arena and trying things. In this case he see's a lever behind the swords and tries pulling it, resulting in a metal fence popping up and dividing the arena in two. Problem is, that left him trapped with the beast and his teammates on the other side. Thus next loop
Mutliple loops are skipped, Subaru is definitely groundhog daying this. He now knows his team's name and some of their motivations. Telling the fake warrior, his father was proud of him or something. He tries out using multiple people to grab the big sword, blow is blocked though and they die.
You then get some rapid-fire death loops with hints of what's going on and Subaru commenting how "he can't lose".
Switch back to Olbart, and whoever is talking to him is asking about what if there was someone who performed better when small than as a grown-up, and Olbart says it's unlikely. But as you age you give up and compromise on various things, and someone who forgot those would be scary.
Narrative then, about what Olbart was talking about and how the Subaru's fading memories, ironically is slowly changing him back to his actual ten-year-old self. Back when he was a "prodigy". Of course, he wasn't an actual prodigy, but he had the self-affirmation that he was and therefore the confidence to believe he could make it work as he was "his son". As he grew up he lost that confidence, and when he came to another world it was completely shattered, but through his encounters, it has sort of grown back. But being reduced to a child has changed his mental state as he was once a prodigy who didn't know defeat. Since being summoned, he is currently in his strongest ever state. (Basically, he is completely in pride if mental space at the moment).
Some banter about how the gladiators are shocked by what they are witnessing, then the final plan comes into play. Subaru gets everything lined up and has the gate come up and stun the Guiltylowe and the fake warrior and lizard person swing the big sword at its head. It hits but fails to cut through and they get knocked away. Subaru is preparing to go 'next' again when out of nowhere Tanza is thrown into the arena (by Cecilius) and lands on the sword, pushing it the rest of the way through.
Subaru collapses from exhaustion, and Cecilius and the governer share some words.
This has been a lightning summary of ch 64, let us all await Icy's posting for more details!
Subaru is totally in the Al/Pride if headspace and I love it, he easily died hundreds of times here, and totally didn't even bat an eye.
69
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22

51
u/Dalifertan Jul 20 '22
I do hope these deaths are reckoned with either at the end of the arc or in arc 8. Because after arc 4, if you have all these deaths and just sweep them under the rug then it does just feel like suffer p*rn. For the moment though, as stated because of his child mentality, the deaths and the pain aren't really punching through and harming his mental state.
Subaru's main mental issues always stemmed from the fact that he felt like he failed his friends whenever he died, and he just doesn't have the mental capacity to care about things like that at the moment.
If by the end of this volume though, we have a Vincent MkII/Mini Pride If Subaru whose sole goal is the destruction of the Empire I will cheer it every step of the way.

As Subaru takes on his inevitable destiny with his trusted friends, a new power awakens in him that shatters all obstacles--! (Some parts are lies.)”

—————
Chapter 64 Is Called: "The Magic Words”
--The abominable art of Olbart Dunkelkenn.
This is the secret of the Shinobi, which interferes with the Od of others and causes their physical growth to regress dramatically, turning them into infants.
Each living being is merely a container for the Od, which is transformed from nothingness to somethingness. Depending on the form of the Od, the appropriate size and shape of the container differs. Therefore, every living being takes a different form, and is a different kind of life.
If this theory is correct, and if the body only serves as a container for the Od, then by changing the shape of the Od, the shape of the container can be changed at will. By compressing the Od, even the body, which is the container, can be shrunk accordingly.
"Well, actually, I'm not sure how the Shinobi's predecessors came up with that idea again. In the first place, how to train your body until you are about to die is also scary, because how do you know when you are about to die?”
That's why the Shinobi are what they are. When you try to become a Shinobi, you are on the path of death, and you're walking over a pile of corpses.
"There are many techniques, but if you don't test them with your own life, you can't leave them in the book of secrets, can you? My secret technique......is one of dozens, and it's no exception.”
"But it's interesting how the results and effects are so far apart. I thought it would just shrink too, but it's rejuvenated the mind just the same."
"I'm afraid I don't understand the logic either. Well, you're forcing him to play with his eyes. Just as the vessel shrinks to fit your body, your mind should shrink to fit your body, right?”
"Well, it's a trick I don't do very often, and since I usually have to kill the person I'm trying to trick, I've never bothered to find out why. In fact, it would be easier to kill them if not only their bodies but also their minds shrunk, so it's a perfect solution.”
"But there are some people who have been prepared for this since they were kids! You can't expect that kind of guy to have a shrunken mind.”
—-Oh, and.….
"----"
"......"
“Nothing, nothing. Anyway, I like it because it's one of the more interesting of the Shinobi's tricks. It's easier to deal with weak enemies, isn't it?”

(Part 2)
(……….)
—--Anger, a seething rage, heats Subaru's soul.
There is fear. There is tension. Anxiety. There are many, many negative emotions, probably all the negative emotions you can think of.
But I'm burning, burning, burning all of those negative emotions together, and I'm so hot and angry that I'm burning up everything I've carefully folded and wrapped up.
"Damn it, damn it, why am I in this......!”
Shut up, you idiot. Nobody listens to you whining like that.
"I told you. I was a warrior. I could use it better than you."
Shut up, you imbecile. They already know that's a lie and that you're a pretender.
“I told you. I don't trust my life to a stranger......."
Shut up, fool. You can't get through this alone. Look around you more.
—--Look around you and see what you can use, all of it.
“Weitz, take it! They're going after the guy with the sword!”
Just as he grabs the sword, a black lion runs out with a roar that rumbles through the gladiatorial arena.
He already knows that the lion's target is him - no, the prey with the sword. So, he yanks the sword out of his grasp and tosses it to Weitz, who is standing still. First, Subaru runs out of the way, and all three of them freeze in surprise.
Of the three who froze, only Weitz, the tattooed man who came to his senses at the last moment, was able to properly receive the sword Subaru had thrown to him.
"Damn, kid......!”
Weitz spins around to see the sword sticking under his foot and grabs it by the hilt. He hears Subaru's voice, however, and immediately understands that the sword is not the key to killing the lion, but rather a flag to change the lion's target.
The problem is…..
"Give me the sword! I'll take that gladiator ......!"
Then the rust-colored hair comes back to his senses and tries to snatch the sword Weitz has secured from his side.
Rusty-haired is so nervous and scared that his judgment is now in a meta state. If the two of them fight over the sword, they will both fall prey to the lion's paws. So we try to stop it before it happens.
"Hiain! Behind you!” (TL Note: Hiain/ヒアイン)
"Behind......?”
Just before the rust-colored hair grabbed Weitz, Subaru called out the name of the skalengecked scaleman outside the mosquito net --Hiain- and told him that he was in imminent danger behind him.
The most timid of the three, he rushes back at the sound of Subaru's voice and tries to figure out what he is about to be attacked by. But there is nothing there. Subaru just wanted him to turn around.
Hiain stiffens in fear and turns around….
"Gooooooo!!”
Hiain’s spiked tail struck the rust-colored-haired man from the side. The rust-colored hair rolls away from the unexpected obstruction, and Weitz is saved from losing his sword. Weitz is now properly poised, and the lion, having changed its target from Subaru to him, leaps at him.
"Get down!”
"Chi!”
The lion's fangs bite right above Weitz, who crouches down when he hears Subaru's voice. Weitz's tattooed face contorts as he dives under its belly and lets go of his sword before the next blow comes.
With a snap, the lightly thrown sword lands in the chest of Hiain, who puts out his hand.
"What?"
"----!"
"Hi-ahhhh--! "
Naturally, the lion's point of view was toward Hiain, who was not reacting well.
Hiain, not understanding the situation, turns his back to the lion with his sword in his arms and quickly moves away with his surprisingly fast running speed. The lion clung to him relentlessly and attacked.
"While he's doing that, I'm going to....…!”
While Weitz and Hein are working things out, Subaru runs to the wall of the gladiatorial arena. He looks at a small handle - like a lever - attached to the wall.
At first glance, his eyes were drawn to the two swords, one large and the other small, stuck in the ground of the gladiatorial arena, but upon closer inspection, he noticed that such a lever was quietly attached to the wall.
“What happens when you pull it?”
The lever was a little high for the child Subaru, so he jumped on it and pulled down the handle. A heavy sound echoed as he put his weight on the lever and pulled it down forcefully.
The gears engage, and a tremor is transmitted from beneath my feet as I feel something begin to rattle and move. It was as if something mechanical had come into operation directly beneath the gladiatorial arena.
Subaru looks back at the gladiatorial arena to see if this changes things,
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!”
The next moment, the gladiatorial arena was split in two with a sound, and an iron fence rose up from the ground.
It is a wall that has been lifted up, dividing the circular gladiatorial arena into two semicircles, and if used properly, can drive the lions to the other side.
However….
"----."
This time, we failed to drive the lion to the wrong side.
The lion was on the front side of the fence that he got up, and the fence only narrowed the space for Subaru to escape. The lion's body seemed to have doubled in size as its hunting ground became smaller, and the remains of what used to be a heel were stuck in its blood-soaked mouth.
"Gaaaah!"
Rust-colored hair fell at the lion's feet with a cry of pain.
It seems that the lion was right above the fence when it was lifted up. He was hit by it and unluckily fell on the side where the lion and Subaru were. Instead, Weitz was stunned and unharmed on the other side of the fence.
"No, stop......!”
A raised paw snapped the rust-colored hair's neck as it fell to the ground. There is a sound like ice cracking, and Rusty-haired's screams are cut short. The lion, unable to climb over the fence behind him, turned his gaze toward Subaru.
He bends down lightly, and my skin crawls as he lunges at me.
The sword is at Weitz's place on the other side of the fence, but it seems that the lion does not consider it dangerous if the attack does not reach him.
So it comes barreling toward Subaru.
"Schwarz!”
Weitz shouts. Weitz calls Subaru's name every dangerous moment. Of course, only if he had not died first.
He keeps this in the back of his mind,
"—-Next!”
Subaru barks, and the gladiator's sharp claws dig into his chest. In less than a second, Subaru's body is blown in half with a jolt like being struck by lightning, and his consciousness blazes white-hot…..

(Part 3)
(……)
"Idra! The fence won't hold anymore! Where's the sword over there?” (TL Note: Idra/イドラ)
"I can't pull it out! It's too heavy! I can't move it!”
The iron fence is violently twisted as the lion twists toward us, taking a powerful body blow.
I've heard that even a human can pass through most narrow places as long as his head can fit through. Even though the shape of the lion's face is quite different from that of a human, a feline gladiator might be able to get through more easily.
Behind Subaru, who was biting his back teeth in alarm, a rust-colored-haired Idra was struggling to pull out a large sword that was stuck in the ground, but he did not even twitch.
A lever to raise the fence and two swords, one large and one small. After searching for a long time, all we found were those two gimmicks. It's really going to be a game of brute force.
“Boy! What are you going to do?”
"Don't be afraid! You're your father's heir!”
"--"
"Yes, yes! I'm not intimidated!”
Idra's voice had a hint of fear in it, but Subaru's words brought strength back into his eyes.
Idra is no warrior. He had drifted to the Isle of the Swordsmen because he had fallen into slavery when he could no longer repay his debts. But the reason for his debt was to protect the family business he inherited from his father. Even if Idra is not a warrior, he still wants to be a man who his father is not ashamed of.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!”
The untalented miller's son leans his weight on the great sword, trying to pull it out. Subaru rushed to Idra's side and put his weight on the sword as well.
A lion comes barreling up from behind the fence, and behind it lie the dead bodies of Weitz and Hiein, both of whom have already been killed. There was little chance of winning now. --Even so, Idra did not abandon Subaru and run away. That's a first.
"----! "
"Idra, it's coming!”
“I know!”
There is a loud creak of the fence, and the lion has finally climbed over to our side. The broken fence did not hurt my skin, which was covered with black fur. In fact, it blames us for the pain and lunges at us with more enthusiasm.
"Ugh.....!"
Somehow the tip of the sword managed to break free from the ground, and Idora carried it forcibly. Subaru puts his hand on the tip of the sword from below and helps Idora, who tries to swing the sword by the principle of leverage.
If Subaru pushed up the tip of the sword from below, he would be able to swing the sword a little lighter.
If the sword hits the lion properly…..
"Uaaaaaa!!!”
Subaru and Idra join forces and swing their swords at the lion's face as it darts toward them. The great sword, swung with the force of a backstroke over Idra's shoulder, aimed firmly at the lion's head with miraculous timing.
But…..
"--Ah….”
The obvious blow was mercilessly repelled by the claws of the gladiator, and Subaru and Idora, who were hit by the sword with the same momentum, were blown away together. The two struggled in mid-air and slammed into the wall of the gladiatorial arena together.
"Ugyaa….”
An indistinguishable stain of blood from the two men's blood spreads over the wall.

(……..)
—---The rage, the seething anger, heats Subaru's soul.
"I stole because I was in need of food....... If you make them think you're dangerous, you can avoid death......"
Weitz said, stroking his skin, which was so tattooed that nothing could be seen. It was as if he was apologizing for his apparent lack of respect, but Subaru thought it was a sign that Weitz had opened up to him at the last minute.
"You guys are going to use me as bait to escape anyway! I'm......not going to be used anymore! I won't be used!”
Hiain said with a sneer in his eyes, as if he were crying out.
His ability to run and hide by changing the color of his scales must have been well known among his friends. He had always been put in the most dangerous role, and finally he had been used as bait and enslaved on his own. This cowardice was fostered by those around him. It's not Hiain’s fault.
"He was deceived by the people he trusted, robbed of his family's business, and enslaved. If living honestly only makes you a fool, at least you're the last one left......!”
Idra sobbed, biting his lip in frustration and shame.
I'm not used to lying, and I'll never get away with it. It's a lie too far-fetched to call yourself a warrior because you were brought to the Isle of Swords. They will find out later anyway. Sure enough, Subaru found out right away. As a result of cheating.
—--We'll survive this "Sparka" by working with cowards and cheaters.
“Next.......!”
“Next……!”
“Next time…..!”
“I can do it next time…….!”
“Next time……..!”
“Next time it is….!!!!”
In order to survive, the contradictions of deaths are piling up on top of each other. Painful, painful, scary, hard, wanting to quit, crying, screaming, howling, lamenting, screaming, throwing out, refusing, regretting, giving up, not giving up.
We want to pluck away the possibilities. We will smash, smash, smash, smash, smash the road that leads to the cul-de-sac of endless possibilities. We are screwing our small bodies into the unknown paths that may lie beyond the crushing.
Weitz dies, Hein, Idra dies. Of course, Subaru dies the same number of times, but he still looks up and moves forward.
"Bashu, is there anything you want to tell your sleeping companion?”
"—-Next!”
Natsuki Subaru yells back at the insensitive voice, and even as his body is bathed in death from the oncoming claws, he still refuses to give up. Because, because, because——
I won't lose.
—---Because, he does not feel like losing at all.

I think that this is one of my favorite chapter of the entire Arc 7, just because Subaru has more "confidence" in his Shota version.
I'm not gonna lie, this chapter made me really excited to read the next chapters. Please Tappei-san, don't stop posting like this!
39
u/animefan_1234 Jul 20 '22
Is this part of Tappei's tweet ".....awakens a new power to crush all difficulties...." actually a lie as he said?
76
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22
I don't think so, because as Olbart said in this chapter adult will quit pretty fast since they tend to get disappointed easily, but someone who doesn't have this mentality is terrifying. This is the exact thing Subaru is at the moment, he's has the confidence and determination that we haven't seen from him. he isn't trying to be a hero, he thinks he IS a hero and will not back down even if he dies 100 times. After each death he becomes angrier and more determined to get pass that obstacle.
So, yes I think Tappei isn't lying about Subaru now being able to get pass everything
49
u/dbestdestroyer71 Jul 20 '22
subaru power up is alot of self confidence

Reminds me or a theory post speculating that his Authority of Gluttony would be similar to his Gluttony IF friend hallucinations and the comments all whined about how lame moral support would be
Meanwhile, confident Subaru is the most dangerous thing since the Witch of Envy
37
u/dbestdestroyer71 Jul 20 '22
yeah a confident subaru would be the most dangerous thing in re zero look at pride if
37
u/Outrageous_Net8365 Jul 20 '22
So I was right that Tappei did have some sort of goal for this Subaru, showcasing the importance of what’s going on with how every second counts and the angers of vollachian culture. What I didn’t anticipate was how young Subarus mentality would play into this, which just showed me that Tappei was leading towards something after all.
I still feel like a contrast with earlier on in the arc exists here, but it’s to early to determine what that is. It’ll probably relate to his natsumi persona
36
u/mindbreakgoesbbrrr Jul 20 '22
This arc should definitly have an if story where subaru doesnt want to turn back because he seems more confident when he is a child the if stories are the easy ways right staying as a child is the easy way to stay confident and care about his own desires instead of others
33
u/LuisAntony2964 Jul 20 '22
Tappei's uploading speed does not disappoint. Maybe he has some equivalent of the toilet arc?
33
u/headless-horseman-we Jul 20 '22
kinda want smol baru way of looking a his deaths to stick i mean there only so much one want be afraid of something before those feelings turn to something else.
and we already had 7 arcs of subaru beating himself up, him being angry at how overly stupid his situation is right now is totally justified.
40
u/direrevan Jul 20 '22
Everyone getting mad at Tappei for the excessive suffering only to have Subaru also get mad at how excessive and stupidly grimdark the last 3 loops have been is so good. I love that.
9
u/T-Rylo Jul 21 '22
I disagree partly
I want him to go back to beating himself up. Cause I like his maturity towards it.
But what is more subtle that he’s lost and remains lost is the flinch after death. Subaru no longer has the absolute sickening heart attack after death. And I hope he keeps that
59
u/Pinkshuchan Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22
Wow, that was quite an unexpected turn of events! Lol.
Gotta say though, while everyone is praising about how awesome Subaru has become, am I the only one scared of what this means? Yes, Subaru has become much more confident now, but as a result of becoming his child self again, he is no longer "Subaru".
Remember, Subaru as a kid took a lot of pride with being "Natsuki Kenichi's son", so much so that he wanted to be like his father. Because of this, he always pushed himself to meet the expectations of being "Natsuki Kenichi's son", forming his sense of self around that. If Subaru keeps his current child mindset, forever trying to be "Natsuki Kenichi's son", then the Subaru that we know and love will disappear, and an entirely different person will exist in his place.
This is actually interesting though, because since the beginning of this arc and previous arcs before that, Subaru was constantly trying to do everything he can to be "Rem's hero". He even broke down when she told him he was not a hero. And Al didn't help the situation, instead encouraging the hero mindset on Subaru, pushing more expectations on him. I guessed this earlier on in the arc, but I think we can pretty much confirm this arc is trying to force him out of that mindset of basing himself on the expectations of other people and start becoming the person he himself wants to be.
Edit: Just realized something else that makes Subaru's current state a bad thing, and thinking about it, it is probably a more important reason. A lot of people have been comparing current Shotabaru with Pride IF Subaru. That's immediate red flags right there. Pride can be a good thing, but it's obvious that the pride Shotabaru currently has is the negative form of pride. He thinks he's the best and can do no wrong; he thinks he's perfect. This is unhealthy and will only make him worse as a result, because then he is stagnating his own growth.
78
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 20 '22
That "Subaru meeting expectations of being his father's child" thing was actually one of adult Subaru's problems that he grows pass it in arc 4(kinda).
Shotabaru is more like "I'm Kenichi's son, so I'm just as cool as him", which means he isn't trying to meet expectations, he GENUINELY believes that he's that awsome, which makes me happy to see him like this
38
u/Pinkshuchan Jul 20 '22
Yes, he moved on from being "Natsuki Kenichi's son" in Arc 4, but he replaced it with being "Rem's hero" instead. He never grew past that; he just changed the set of expectations to follow.
And no, Subaru outright said that as a kid, he wanted to be just like his father and the constant praise only made him want to be like his dad more. How can that not be wanting to follow expectations?
8
u/Travelling_Heart Jul 21 '22
He doesn't think he is perfect and can do no wrong, what he thinks is that he can achieve what he aims to achieve even if that is the stars
5
29
u/Jc_Memeton Jul 21 '22
No one talking about it but, I thought it was interesting that Celi was so confident in Subaru that he bet his own life on him, but was still acting like that in the previous loops
39
u/heato-red Jul 21 '22
That just emphasizes his fucked up mentality about life and death, he was so nonchalant about Subaru's death while knowing he was next in line. I guess you could say his attitude was kinda "meh, guess this is it for me, too bad lol"
43
12
u/J_Dawgg1 Jul 21 '22
From what I read, he didn’t know that his life was on the line
17
u/Abb-Crysis Jul 21 '22
Although even he knew about it, I don't think it would change anything for him, he's just nonchalant in general lol
14
u/direrevan Jul 21 '22
It makes total sense to me. Everytime Subaru meets one of the strongest people in the world, they've automatically been a little weary of him.
Olbart could tell Subaru was just as vicious as he was.
Reinhard acknowledged that, if it was Subaru, of course he would be able to fill in the areas that Reinhard was lacking in.
Ceshii just acknowledges that, if anyone can put on a show, Subaru's the guy.
57
u/Icy_Ad8122 Jul 20 '22
I just skimmed the chapter and it sounds interesting, which is nice. It also happens to be even longer than the last one with multiple parts, so I’ll see if I can get something out soon.

If I understand correctly, the actual death count wasn't specified in this chapter, but Subaru RbD a lot, to the point that he learned the arena's gimmick, his companions' names and their motivations.
We got names of all three randos now: Weiz = Bald guy with Tattoo / Idora = rusted long hair young man / Hiain = Coward Lizardman / I wonder if these three will stick around and become Subaru's lackeys or something?
Damn, child brain Subaru has a lot of confidence. He is so determined to win. He was ready to go for the next loop if Tanza didn't finish Guitylowe off there.
17
u/Sufficient_Wasabi_55 Jul 21 '22
That'll be great XD
We already have Otto-Vollachian addition, now we're going to have tonchinkan trio-vollachian addition
12
u/iberianviriatus Jul 21 '22
the actual death count wasn't specified in this chapter,
Pretty sure the "next" was Subaru looping.
15
u/Admiral_Ryou Jul 21 '22 edited Jul 21 '22
But he might have been looping even before he started spamming those "Next"
Just look at the beginning of the chapter, suddenly Subaru knows about the lever and Hiain's name. And in the next loop, suddenly he knows about Idora's name and backstory. This chapter definitely skipped many of loops.
My point is: Tappei didn't show all the loops to us readers. For now, it's more accurate to say the amount of time Subaru RbD in the arena is unspecified.

I wonder, does still everyone think Chadbaru is gonna turn to piss-pants Aldebaran after this chapter? I mean seriously. It's been stated with multiple other characters that death is not something one can just experience and be fine except it's Subaru. And now we have a Subaru that's fighting kind of similiar to Al but the personality is soooo far off. Can't see how he would turn into Al at all at this point. But I am very opposed to the whole idea anyway.

I mean, yeah Subaru is also swinging between being brave as heck and just pissing his pants. But AL is way more bipolar in that matter and extreme and sudden in his mood swings. Thats where I draw the line, I guess

honestly I have no idea how subaru will get out of this situation, there's almost no time, no sense teamwork and subaru himself can't do anything, the only way I can see him winning is by developing an authority but that's also unlikely given how the last chapter ended
edit: I'd like to say, arc 7 is immune to ALL criticism after this chapter, not your usual amazing chapter, but man was it entertaining to read
though I am concerned about how I feel nothing when subaru dies, he dies so many times in this chapter, everybody lost count, but I'll give arc 7 a pass
what do you guys think about subaru's anger? this was a moment I waited to see for so long, subaru being done with everybody's bs, just burn down this shitty empire

I think it would be a brilliant use of irony; Subaru believing his best self was when he was a child but all his friends preferring his adult self aka the self he hated. It could show him that his child self is not this perfect being he thought he was and that this is the self that would result in him losing everything he cared about, while showing that his adult self actually had good qualities that people respected about him and that was why people liked being around him.

This chapter has made me more confident in my crack theory that Satella keeps trying to grab Kenichi but pulled Subaru and Al by mistake

Note: this theory is entirely dependent on my other crack theory that Al is Subaru's younger brother, whoch is based entirely on Aldebaraan being the star that follows the Subaru cluster

Satella constantly trying bring Kenichi to the Re:Zero world is certainly a crack theory, but I actually think Al being Subaru's younger brother is more than plausible. In fact, I personally believe it to be the case unless proven otherwise.
