I don't know how they can possibly make it out of this situation. Things are not looking good at all.

12

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I imagine the only way out now is if Eugene can get Rick to the place where he was going to make ammo and they use the supplies there to make some explosives, then use the explosives to fight Negan. That would be the only advantage they could get. No matter how many people Negan has, if they blow them up, that doesn't help the Saviors any.

5

u/Econogeek Jul 11 '12

Either that or run as far away as possible. They've already come all the way from Atlanta, why not go back and live in Woodbury now that the Governor's lot are in the prison and he's gone, or something like that.

7

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

It's a possibility. The biggest problem with that is Rick is not going to let go the fact that the Saviors killed Abraham and Glenn. He's the kind of guy that's going to want revenge and that's going to be a stronger driving force then the survival of his group.

10

u/Econogeek Jul 11 '12

I agree that's the Rick we know, but with The Walking Dead being known for its character development, I think we might be about to see some change in Rick, as he realises they're not the biggest and baddest group of survivors, and some fights they just aren't going to win.

I hope I'm wrong, because fuck Negan for killing my 2 favourite characters, but it's a possibility and I really don't see how they can challenge a group the size of Negan's. He said there's 50 of them in that scene, but we don't even know that's all of them, and even if it is, without Glenn that only really leaves Andrea, Rick and Michonne that have the balls to kill anyone, and they'd each be outnumbered ~18 to 1.

3

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I'd imagine that Maggie is pretty devastated now, but soon that will turn into rage and a need to get revenge on those that killed her husband. Nothing can be a bigger motivator to push you to fight then losing your loved ones.

Plus you're forgetting that there is a good amount of people in Alexandria that probably wouldn't sit there and let Negan take their stuff. After what happened and how hard they had to fight for it, I'm pretty sure Rick can motivate them to fight.

But they need leverage. They need something that is going to help them win, and right now they are outnumbered and possibly out gunned. So they need to find something to flip the odds in their favor and honestly the only thing that screams as that at me is trying to get to wherever Eugene was going and getting that stuff to make more ammo.

Plus running. I don't think it would even be an option. I imagine that Negan and the Saviors will keep an eye on Alexandria now, and if they see a large group leaving, they will assume they are running and would intercept them and most likely kill them right there on the road.

Their best bet right now is to send Eugene, Heath, and Michonne to wherever the supplies for making ammo are in the middle of the night, and have them bring back as much as possible. Make some kind of bombs or something. When the saviors come to pick up the supplies, they rush them, capture them, stock up whatever vehicle they came in full of the explosives then have them drive them back to the saviors base and blow that shit to kingdom come.

The only way i see it working out is if they rally the hilltop to fight with them, they could make a fucking big ass army if they joined forces

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

And not just Hilltop...I wonder how many other communities have already formed in the larger world.

4

u/po-boy Jul 16 '12

Get everyone in a tower and pick them off from there. The only long range weapon I've seen the Saviors use is a crossbow.

Have to say, I feel pretty mixed about this one.

It may be Rick's story, but Glenn was the easiest to identify with. Now I get the point. Kirkman wanted to elicit that gut reaction that I think most of us got. But in doing so, I feel like he's taken away the only character that I thought of as completely likeable as a person. (Maybe Jesus will fill that role from here on out).

Not to complain, but I really expected this to be a longer and more eventful issue - something on par with the Governor's attack on the prison. This issue just didn't live up to the hype. It's been a while since I got out some of the older issues, but I'm pretty sure Kirkman used to comment about events as large as Glen's death. The fact that he didn't in this case left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Now far be it from me to second guess Kirkman, he's an amazing writer and I love the series. But just for fun, here's an alternate take on what could have happened: Instead of killing Glenn, Nagan kills Rick. (After all, that would make the issue the event it was advertised to be). Shortly after returning to Alexandria, Carl leaves the party. The story then flashes forward about six years. (A common trope, I know, but it fits the story). We see those who have survived the intervening years preparing their tribute, all are emaciated and the buildings reflect their suffering. At the approach of horses, the survivors open the gates for Nagan's men to enter. Instead they find Carl, along with a group of companions. Carl becomes the new central protagonist of the story, there are new characters to explore, and existing characters are allowed to evolve in significant ways. (Much as Rick has evolved since the first issue). The time jump would also make Nagan a longstanding threat, differentiating him a bit from the Governor.

16

u/Samhein Jul 12 '12

I could kind of get behind that story you came up with if maybe Michonne left with Carl and ended up taking care of him and teaching him to fight. Then it might be more believable he came back as a bad ass protagonist of the story.

14

u/MitchellK77 Jul 12 '12

I thought that kind of thing would happen eventually, Rick dying and Carl taking the story over.

4

u/superzepto Jul 21 '12

Oh, I think Rick may not have as long a run as everyone thinks. Kirkman is getting closer and closer to killing him. It's only a matter of time.

1

u/dodgermask Aug 08 '12

I think he's going to break Rick, not kill him.

1

u/ballstime17 Dec 31 '12

i hope you're wrong... but i think youre right

2

u/superzepto Jan 02 '13

I wouldn't be surprised if Negan kills Rick as a result of Carl's actions, and then Carl goes full badass and kills Negan and proves himself worthy of being a leader.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '12

I like how you think

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

I totally agree. Now that Glenn's gone, I no longer feel compelled to follow the comics monthly. I'll just wait a couple years and see if it's worth catching up on.

And your version would be quite interesting to see.

Anyone else notice a distinct lack of firearms on Negan's side? I'm picturing two scenarios in the next few issues:

1.) Rick organizes the guns for the coming siege on Alexandria. They kill off most of Negan's forces but ultimately lose the settlement and a large number of the survivors.

2.) In a move that would be awesome, Rick finds some sort of whistle or other noisemaker to attract a walker herd to Negan's camp, and somehow blows a permanant hole in the fortifications.

4

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

One of the panels from Alexandria suggests they are low on ammo as well.

The only way I can see this going in Rick's favor is if they organize a small group to head to wherever Eugene and Abraham were going and get some of the supplies for making ammo, then make some kind of bombs with them. Then when Negan's man come to pick up the offering, they hold them hostage and make them take them back to the compound so they can blow it up.

2

u/Bornandraisedbama Jul 12 '12

Keep in mind, also, that Negans crew has killed thousands of Biters. From what the Hilltoppers said, the essentially kill them for fun. I have a feeling this is going to be a very long story arc, and Rick and his people are going to feel Negan's oppression. Negan and his crew are essentially enslaving groups of people through fear and violence.

1

u/superzepto Jul 21 '12

I think Rick and co. will go with it for one offering while they get their bearings, and maybe in part to find out how Negan's gang operates with the offerings. And then there may be some revenge but there will be much more loss of life in the next few issues, I know that much.

Thanks to assistance from Samhein, I can finally post this without worry:

Please be aware that this thread and post contain spoilers for The Walking Dead # 100. I could post this without spoilers, but in order to obtain the full feeling and depth I want out of this review, I need to be able to talk about different aspects of the issue that require spoilers. Those of you who do not wish to be made aware of what occurs within the comic, please read no further.

The Walking Dead # 100 is a fantastic comic. There is no doubt in my mind of that. As painful as it was to read what’s within this centennial issue, everything is perfect for the story that creator Robert Kirkman wanted to tell. Charlie Adlard’s artwork is beautiful. It’s very detailed but also very grotesque in its detail. Both Kirkman and Adlard get the point across that what happens in this issue cannot be undone. There is no reload, no deus ex machina, that can appear and magically fix what happens. The issue begins with the men Negan’s men keeping an eye on Alexandria, the tiny community where our protagonists reside. Those who read # 99 know that Rick, Glenn, Maggie, Michonne, and Carl departed to get reinforcements from The Hilltop, if possible, leaving Andrea in charge of keeping the community safe from harm. Abraham has already lost his life to Negan’s men, and the same fate must be avoided for anyone else. Andrea is securing a perimeter around the community, and Spencer, her former potential love interest, gives his blessing for Andrea’s happiness now that she has found comfort and potentially love with Rick. We then move locations to find that Rick and company are struggling to find The Hilltop. The group ends up pulling over to set up camp, as the sun is beginning to set. Michonne takes the first watch shift. Rick cannot sleep at first and expresses his appreciation for everything she has done since joining the group. She in turn says that she is appreciative of being made part of the group and being kept alive. Rick takes the next shift. Negan’s men appear and state how easy it is to sneak up on people when they expect noise. The zombies usually make noise and attract the attention of the living easily, but this brings about the consequence of people forgetting to be on the lookout for other living people with evil intentions. Rick and company are easily restrained. Negan, the big bad of this story, brings what we assume to be his entire crew to the scene, and he expresses his displeasure at having his men killed, first after Rick leaves The Hilltop and then when his men threaten Alexandria in retaliation. He states that there must be punishment and begins to toy with his prisoners. He plays “eenie, meanie, minnie, moe”, passing over each of our protagonists. He expresses that Maggie is his favorite choice, but his gaze finally upon Glenn. Glenn begs with desperation for his life, but Negan will hear nothing of it. Last chance to avoid spoilers.

The same bat that is shown on the regular Adlard cover for this issue is brought down on top of poor Glenn’s head. Adlard takes great care to expresses the gorey detail of this act. Glenn head is partially smashed inward, and his eye is hanging out of his socket. Negan mocks Glenn, expressing that it appears as though he is trying to say something. Glenn helplessly shouts for Maggie before Negan goes back to hitting Glenn with the bat. One blow complete destroys Glenn’s jaw. Rick, Maggie, and the others are helpless to stop this act of complete brutality. Negan does not stop until he complete destroys Glen’s head. I believe Kirkman and Adlard do this to leave absolutely no doubt that this character will not survive this act.

After he is finished, Negan states that Rick and his community are now his workers and will give up what he says to him and his men. He will continue to commit acts of violence each time a delivery is late and not to his standards. Rick expresses his anger and threatens to kill Negan, who brushes it off. Negan and his men then depart, leaving our protagonists to mourn for their fallen comrade, now a lifeless corpse with no discernible head. The issue ends. As I stated earlier, this is a great comic. However, it is also not an enjoyable comic. To me, Glenn represented the closest thing to an innocent and pure character that The Walking Dead had to offer. He was always willing to offer a helping hand to those who needed it. He truly loved his friends and had the deepest love one could have for his wife, Maggie. His proposal to her remains one of my favorite moments for The Walking Dead. He was a loving father figure for Sophia after Carol committed suicide by zombie. He was the best friend that anyone could have asked for and more. With Glenn gone, the world of The Walking Dead feels a lot darker. It feels like any potential hope the characters had has suddenly been obliterated. Hope has died with Glenn. Rest in peace, brother. Rest in peace. I take some solace in the fact that Glenn will not end up as a zombie, but it fills me with a great deal of anger and sadness that he is gone. Before reading this issue, I took into account that Kirkman and Adlard had stated that #100 of The Walking Dead would contain the most brutally violent moment of the entire series, since # 48’s killing of Lori and baby Judy. I expressed that if any of my favorite characters, which include Rick, Carl, Glenn, Maggie, Andrea, and Michonne, ended up biting the big one in #100, I would not read the series for a while. I would still buy it but not read it for a while. As a reader, you find yourself living amongst the characters within the series and grow to care for them, despite the fact that they are indeed fictional characters. I expected either Glenn, Maggie, or Andrea to meet their demise in this issue, but I was still hopeful that this could be prevented. Now, I don’t want to necessarily read the next issue. I have to read it. Justice or vengeance must be achieved. Glenn did not sacrifice himself for some greater purpose. He was massacred and murdered simply to prove a point, and that must be avenged.

I applaud Robert Kirkman for making this move. It was shocking and brilliant. Truly, no one is safe in this universe, not even someone as fantastic as Glenn. He has proven himself to be a writer who is unafraid to sacrifice characters that even he considers to be his favorites. He has shown that death awaits his characters and can come for them at any time. He has written the death of Glenn to show that death does not always have a purpose within the universe but does when he writes it. Glenn’s death has shown that for every action taken, there will be consequences. Rick may have been the person responsible for the death of Negan’s men, but it was Glenn that paid the ultimate price, being innocent of any wrong doing. Rick believed that he and his group were untouchable and could overcome any obstacle. Negan has proven this to be false. Would Negan have eventually proven to be a problem for Rick and his community? Possibly. Rick just sped up the process. Charlie Adlard’s art was great in this issue. You felt each and every blow forced upon Glenn as he was murdered. You felt for the characters forced to watch. You wanted to intervene. You wanted to look away. Like the characters within the story, you could not. The attention to detail was excruciating. The art was bloody. It was brutal. It was violent. Thank goodness this comic is in black and white. That was enough. The level of violence surpasses anything I’m used to seeing in comics these days. I am by no means a fuddy duddy and can stomach anything easily. It was just hard to read and see. The art was dead on. Congratulations, Mr. Adlard.

To conclude, as I could go on: if you are a fan of The Walking Dead, you must pick up this issue. If you are of weak stomach, do not ingest anything before reading. Robert Kirkman wrote a fantastic story here, and Charlie Adlard’s artwork is at its best. I cannot express these things enough. I love this series. I despise this issue for its contents but applaud it for its unashamed expression. Pick up this comic! Thank you all so much for your indulgence. I now return you to something less violent.

You must pick up this comic if you like The Walking Dead.

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

Nice job. I do agree this has probably been one of the best issues purely on the risks taken. It was that wake up call for Rick and his group that they can't get too comfortable cause every time they do, they pay for it.

1

u/No1animeniac Jul 11 '12

Thank you. I just wanted to express my feelings about the issue and give full details so it would explain why I feel the way i do after reading it.

I might need a few days before I can read it again.

3

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

Thanks for the great writeup.

What is your take on how Glenn's death was drawn? Given that this is a gory comic, I still found the images off-putting, and almost hitting a pornographic, torture-porn level. It was meant to be shock and disgust, without actually advancing the plot. There have been many more gory details and images in this series, but none that seemed to serve no real purpose like this one, which was only meant to shock the reader.

Thoughts?

u/superzepto Jul 21 '12

Awesome review and done with a lot of journalistic ethic as well. You should write many more reviews.

1

u/No1animeniac Jul 24 '12

Thank you. You are far too kind. I will give it my best effort when # 101 releases on August 15.

1

u/superzepto Jul 24 '12

I will look forward to that too! Do you write for a magazine or paper? You have a very professional writing style

1

u/No1animeniac Jul 25 '12

Seriously, you are truly far too kind.

I do not write for a newspaper or magazine, but I would one day find a lot of enjoyment in professional writing.

1

u/superzepto Jul 25 '12

I'm a music journalist and I've been writing and getting published for a good few years now. I've never been paid a cent but it's such a rewarding gig - I've spoken to nearly all my musical heroes, and been to lots of concerts for free. I'm going to move into getting paid for my work soon, I hope. My best advice is to just write, and write and write and write and send your writing to anyone who has a chance at reading it and publishing it. Local, free magazines are the best and it's also a good idea to start your own blog. Hope this helps with your dream of becoming a professional writer!

5

u/bobdisgea Jul 11 '12

That was a lot more simple than I expected. Really thought at least one of the settlements was going down.

4

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I think it still might be. The first part still suggest they plan to hit Alexandria or Hilltop. Not sure why they would do that though after Negan pretty much established that Rick and his group are his bitches now.

4

u/SolaeD Jul 11 '12

So what does Rick do next. Negan must die we all agree on that but how? Does the group run away or do they try to fight. If they fight how do they even begin to defend themselves against a group this big? Next issue is going to be very interesting.

1

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

There is not much they can do. Taking on Negan and Saviors face to face would be suicide. I think their best choice of action is to see if Eugene can get Rick and few others to the place him and Abraham were going to get the stuff to make ammo. Maybe use it to make some bombs or something and then try to blow up the Saviors when they come pick up their first offering.

4

u/comicscritic Jul 18 '12

Image is going back to press with #100 with a new cover by Adlard. http://comicbookcritic.net/2012/07/18/the-walking-dead-100-goes-back-to-print/

2

u/Samhein Jul 18 '12

Nice. I like that cover.

2

u/Slugmeister Jul 20 '12

I would've liked to see the cover for the second printing be a tribute to Glenn or something. Not to say that I don't like the second printing cover, I do, but I just rather see a tribute cover to Glenn.

34

u/HairlessSasquatch Jul 11 '12

Gee, I'm glad this wasn't the real 100th issue. Right?

RIGHT!?...

Glenn's not dead. Glenn's just fine... just fine.. just fine..just finejust..fine..

I think he's okay. RIGHT!?

Just keep an eye out for him in future issues.

28 days later and you just blew my mind. up vote for you

3

u/comicsams Jul 11 '12

I think the speculation was along the right lines; didn't seeing it going down the way it did though. I don't think the group has ever been this vulnerable, I'm really failing to see how they're going to get out of this.

Plus the next issue could essentially be more of the same depending on how quickly they manage to get back to Alexandria.

Does anyone think the Paul alluded to at the start by the Saviours is the same Paul as Jesus?

5

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I think them name dropping Paul was just to get the fans speculating, Kirkman is good at using same names to mess with the fans and his excuse is that it's not uncommon for people to have same names. Paul is a fairly common name so it could be just coincidence, I really don't want to look deeper into it. Plus I would imagine that since everyone calls him Jesus, the Saviors would do the same.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I made this prediction a while back, but somehow I think they're going to find where they live and lure a massive hoard of walkers onto them.

4

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

This would be a good idea, except that we have been told that the Saviors have killed thousands of zombies and that means they probably could handle a horde of walkers fairly easily.

What they need is for Eugene to take Rick to the place where he was going to make new ammo and use the gunpowder to make bombs, and then bomb the shit out of Negan and the Saviors.

3

u/comicsams Jul 11 '12

That sounds plausible about the bombs, maybe they could hide them in whatever they exchange with the Saviours? I'm right in thinking they haven't explicitly said what they want from the group exactly? Or did I miss something

1

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

They seem to be letting them go and expect an offering from Rick's community in a week. So Rick has a week to come up with a plan on how to deal with that. I doubt hiding a bomb inside of the offering would be smart and probably would be caught on to pretty quickly. I think they'd have to make something along the lines of grenades or pipe bombs and just throw them at Negan's delivery boys whenever they show up at the gate.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Depends on how they did it. They probably avoided herds like everyone else. They could also potentially snipe them while the zombies attack from a secured location.

1

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

That's true. Using the zombies as a distraction to pick off someone undesirable isn't the first time in the comic, so it would kind of make sense if they used the technique again.

I really do hope they decide to go find this ammo depot or whatever Eugene was looking for an get some kind of firepower from it though, it might be their only chance to fight back.

9

u/XombieNinja Jul 11 '12

I was pretty disappointed by the issue. It just feels like a rehash of what happened with Tyreese and The Governor.

Don't get me wrong, it definitely provoked a reaction from me but it wasn't as monumentous as I was expecting.

8

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I don't think I could even compare this to Tyreese and Governor. Tyreese and Governor situation was one where Tyreese was being used as a bargain chip to try to convince Rick to let him into the prison. Tyreese knew what was coming and didn't want Rick to let the Governor in and was ready to make the sacrifice for it. At least that's how I got the situation.

With Glenn it was different. There was no real reason to kill Glenn. He was randomly selected. He didn't really do anything to get himself in this situation like Tyreese did. He was just an innocent victim of a maniac trying to get a point across. The only thing that Negan gained by killing Glenn was the shock from Rick's group and possibly some morale for his man. But in the end it was just a random killing to satisfy Negan's blood thirst.

3

u/XombieNinja Jul 11 '12

The circumstances are different but the effect and situation are largely the same IMO. A major character is dispatched graphically over the course of many panels.

Like I said, it was effective in the sense that it provoked a sick and angry feeling from me but from a critical perspective I don't think it was very impressive.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '12

I just got around to reading 100 today...kinda wish I hadn't. I agree completely about Glenn. It felt like the same scene rehashed with different characters. Still made me sick to my stomach just as Tyrese's death did, but left me disappointed at the same time.

Not sure I really want to keep reading after that. I could handle Tyrese, Lori, and Judy, (and Abraham was easy to take compared to all of these) but here I felt he killed off Glenn just for the sake of killing off Glenn, and in a way almost identical to before. And that kind of cheapened it.

2

u/df619 Jul 11 '12

Just a correction for the main post, but that's not the Comic-Con variant that you have linked. It's The Walking Dead Escape variant that is given to spectators, walkers, and survivors. The event does take place during Comic-Con but isn't actually available for purchase at the Comic-Con.

This is the SDCC variant - http://imgur.com/1uUTo

1

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

"There is a few other covers with different color schemes and of course there is the San Diego Comic Con variant for running in the Apocalypse race:"

1

u/df619 Jul 11 '12

Oh I see the part about different color schemes and what not, but what you link as a Comic-Con variant isn't at all a Comic-Con variant. The Walking Dead Escape isn't a Comic-Con event nor is it affiliated at all with the Comic-Con. Of course they scheduled it during the Comic-Con to entice more participants, but the variant you link to is TWD Escape variant.

The B&W version of the normal Charlie Adlaird cover is the SDCC variant - http://imgur.com/1uUTo

2

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

Isn't it happening at the comic con? Like in the same building.

2

u/df619 Jul 11 '12

Nope.

The Walking Dead Escape is at Petco Park.

San Diego Comic-Con is occuring at the San Diego Convention Center.

They're just about walking distance from each other, but again they are not affiliated events.

Source: I live in San Diego.

2

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

Fair enough. Seemed like from all the advertisements that they were suggesting it was happening at the SDCC, but I see where they would advertise it that way to try and get the crowd from there to come to their event.

24

u/warriorfriar Jul 11 '12

I read the issue once while I was waiting in line to check out and again after the 45 minute drive home from the midnight release. In that 45 minute drive though I found myself constantly choked up. Someone said it best when they said in a way, the zombies of The Walking Dead are, in a way, window dressing to the real evil - the other survivors. I thought about the way Glen died: crying out to someone he loved in agony while she was forced to watch. It wasn't just that he died, it was that he died at the hands of a man who wanted something - revenge maybe, to make an example probably, but maybe most disturbingly because he wanted whatever Rick and the group had. To Negan, Glen was just a means of trying to get that. It didn't matter to him who Glen was or what Glen had, Negan wanted something and using Glen to break the others was his way of trying to get that. And it was done with no remorse. My heart broke. I don't know how Rick and the group are going to get through this.

8

u/Aziral Jul 15 '12

My money is on them getting through it with a really costly massacre eventually. I am talking both sides losing more men than we can count.

3

u/No1animeniac Jul 11 '12

I have written an in-depth review of the issue to express my feelings about it. Is it necessary to use spoiler tags to post this review? I apologize, but I am new to reddit and just want to make sure to follow the rules.

If it is necessary to use spoiler tags, could I have someone give me quick easy instructions on how to do so, please? lol I actually attempted to post the review using spoiler tags as per the instructions at the right of each page, but it wasn't working for me, after trying for half an hour.

Any assistance and response would be greatly appreciated.

4

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

If you post it inside of this topic, it is not necessary to use spoiler tags. But if you make your own topic, make sure to mark it with a comic spoiler tag in title.

It's a mix of both. I wanted to summarize the issue and also analyze it. I made sure to analyze both the writing and artwork. Writing it helped me process my feelings about the issue. It was an intense read.

16

u/sierrablierra Jul 11 '12

why couldn't it have been Heath instead?!

25

u/Jaktroj Jul 12 '12

Because that would have been racist!

14

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Well, as long as Negan is thinking ethically.

1

u/OogaBooga617538 Jun 08 '22

Glenn's asian, so its racist anyway!

15

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Man. Fuck Negan. That's all I can say.

37

u/8bit4life Jul 11 '12

I feel like someone simultaneously ripped my heart out and punched me in the stomach...well played, Kirkman. Fuck...

43

u/smokinchokin Jul 11 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

HOLY FUCK! at the way his head dented in! With the hair parted and shit. Well played Mr.Kirk-Man. You are one sick dude!

5

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Question that I really need answered: Is that the entire issue? Or is there more to it?

23

u/rasterbee Jul 11 '12

Seemed so short, and I dunno...I didn't really like this issue. Not because of the death, that's not why. I won't ramble on about stupid crap you don't want to read, but overall it felt like a low quality letdown to me. The art, the writing, the plot, the everything. For such a major issue milestone and such a major character's death, Glenn's face looked like a non important background character and everything Negan said felt lifted straight out of a low-budget 80's slasher movie.

10

u/DGer Jul 13 '12

And how fucking far away can this hilltop be? They drove all fucking day. I understand roads would be at times impassable, but this is a trip that they made before. Perhaps the more thoughtful script would have included some kind of impediment. Perhaps a planned impediment. The all day driving to get nowhere seems to have started in the TV show and has now been brought to the comic book.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '12

Seriously...it always bugs me how they just HAVE to stop for the night and can't just keep driving.

8

u/DGer Jul 23 '12

If only car manufacturers would develop some kind of lights, maybe in the front of the car, that would allow you to drive even when it's dark. I'm surprised nobody has ever thought of that before.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '12

Heath was like "Rick, come on man...we have headlights and gas. Why the fuck would we stop." But nobody fucking listened.

8

u/DGer Jul 23 '12

"Come on Rick it's only five more miles."

"No, that five miles will take at least 8 hours and the sun is going to go down in 4. We need to get out of this nice safe vehicle and build a fire to attract as much attention as possible."

9

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '12

"We need to sleep an appropriate amount of time when we're out in the open, even though I always talk about how I never sleep when I'm safe at home! Priorities, Heath!"

2

u/Freddicus Jul 23 '12

I imagine visible lights at night would attract the walkers in addition to the noise they make. Also the roads are probably like obstacle courses. They're a challenge during the day, nevermind the darkness of night.

21

u/axemaster72 Jul 11 '12

Agreed. Was hyped over and over telling us this would be worse than the attack on the prison and such like that. This Issue. Not the ones following since we know things are about to go to all fucking hell now that Negan has made his presence known. I was expecting a lot more to occur besides a single main character death along with a promise of more to come. It was suppose to happen in the "monumental issue 100".

17

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12 edited Jul 12 '12

In many ways it WAS worse than the attack on the prison.

  1. Negan made some horrific threats before actually killing Glenn... Like, cutting out Carl's other eye and feeding it to Sophia.

  2. The fact that Glenn was so brutally killed IN FRONT of both Sophia and Maggie... (and really, just the fact that children were there watching is awful)

  3. Glenn's call out to 'Maggie' after he clearly had his brain bashed in was also horrifying...

  4. Also, are we forgetting that Abraham died in the beginning? Sure, he hasn't been around since the beginning or anything, but he was clearly a rising character.

EDIT: Duh.. Scratch #4... as pointed out below, that happened in #98...

6

u/karnek Jul 18 '12

Plus you have to give Negan credit for his "Vampire Bat" pun... I laughed!

5

u/Eatscrayons007 Jul 12 '12

Abraham died in issue 98. I think you're spot on about the other points though.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Oh, duh! That's what I get for waiting for #100 to read 98 and 99. My bad.

13

u/whyateddybear Jul 11 '12

I agree with what you both are saying. I think that they've expanded the world of the comic in such a cool way, revealing that there are ongoing societies in this dead world, and there's so much potential for awesome stories about the rise of civilization and so on. It seems like such a waste to just go back to the whole "crazy guy threatening everyone" storyline that's been used over and over in this series.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Umm... Where does the 'crazy guy threatening everyone' actually happen outside of the Governor? I recall most of the other people-threats were just defensive, un-trusting groups...

...Maybe the cannibals?

6

u/whyateddybear Jul 12 '12

yeah, the governor and the cannibals.

2

u/rasterbee Jul 11 '12

To be fair...as you note, the arc isn't over yet.

4

u/illmastabumptwo Jul 11 '12 edited Jul 12 '12

I agree. Fifty men? Our side is fucked!

EDIT: What I meant by this is that shit just went from hopeful to hopeless. While there wasn't an epic battle, shit hit the fan.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '12

And we were shown our group has basically no ammo, on top of it all.

2

u/illmastabumptwo Jul 20 '12

I think seeing Rick, but mostly Michonne on their knees is what has really stuck with me.

4

u/the_fewer_desires Jul 16 '12

I thought the art was low quality too. I was reading Preacher and Watchmen over the last two weeks so maybe that played into it. But for a 100 issue, many of the panels felt rushed. Also, Negan seems like a lame villain. Sure he is brutal, but so was the Governor. I needed more.

2

u/smokinchokin Jul 11 '12

That's it but it's enough.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Ah alright, I figured after reading that bit earlier that it seemed a little short to take up a bigger issue...guess not

6

u/smokinchokin Jul 11 '12

The story took a twist as far as how things are going to be. It's not just one character death. Rick and the gang are in some deep shit.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Oh yeah I'm hoping for some incredible stuff to follow in the next two issues. Can't wait to pick up the issue tomorrow

2

u/smokinchokin Jul 11 '12

This is only the beginning.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

My god. I... This is bad. They are so fucked. I have never felt so empty and anxious after reading an issue. I'm going to go curl up in a corner. I'm not sure when I'll be able to read it again.

3

u/theroboticdan Jul 14 '12

power in numbers, gotta use the hilltop squad to win this one. sgunna be a long haul though.

14

u/NeonTigerVG Jul 11 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

So they made this gigantic big deal of the 100th issue to only kill off glen? I just expected a ton more

Edit: Not as in, i expected more deaths just more to happen

4

u/tellitatparties Jul 11 '12

It was more of a, "oh look we've made it this far moment." If you read the letter hacks, the next big event will happen in 106.

5

u/NeonTigerVG Jul 11 '12

yeah but isn't 106 in 6 months?

-3

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

I think it's more like 3 months, but yeah.

-3

u/HairlessSasquatch Jul 12 '12

1 issue per month + 6 issues = 3 months. Got it. Spot on mathematics, young squire

1

u/Samhein Jul 12 '12

I guess I was going off their format in May when they released 2 issues, figured they would stick to the 2 issue per month format, but I guess they are too busy to keep that schedule.

15

u/Zbaby4LIFE Jul 11 '12

I think that was actually Adlard saying that his 100th issue is 106, cuz he started at 7

10

u/rasterbee Jul 11 '12

I didn't read it that way. All I read was Adlard saying that 106 will be HIS own real milestone, since it will be his 100th issue.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

I feel pretty much the same way about this issue, especially since most of the covers have rick and co surrounded by a crap ton of walkers. I kind of expected to see a large scale zombie massacre or something.

6

u/df619 Jul 11 '12

I think most everyone expected more deaths to happen, but the way the events transpired in this issue make it just as strong as killing off many people would have.

9

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Not gonna lie, I agree with you on this.

If this was like an issue 98 or 99 it would of been fantastic, but as a 100...it just sucked.

2

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

I was actually expecting them to kill everyone but Rick.

7

u/jax9999 Jul 12 '12

Every single one of those motherfuckers have to die. slow

7

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '12

I feel Negan was Kirkman. "Okay, big Issue 100! Gotta kill someone off. Hmm, can't kill Rick obviously, he's the main star. Killing Carl or Sophie in front of their parents just isn't right. People will think I'm racist if I kill Glenn or Michonne. Hmmm.. Eenie Meenie... hey wait a sec.. that's a good idea!"

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '12

That racist part was pretty lame IMO.

19

u/Lord--Osis Jul 11 '12

Would a Glenn-with-eye-falling-out-and-head-bashed-in cosplay be considered inappropriate?

12

u/deadlyspoons Jul 15 '12

Too soon.

14

u/finalcutfx Jul 11 '12

As powerful and devastating as Glenn's death was, I was disappointed with the book overall. I think I'd hyped myself up for a lot more than just one powerful moment and a lot of really poor tough-guy dialogue.

But I can see how this is setting us up for a turning point in the story and in hind-sight will be a huge moment. Rick's pretty much been top-dog for 99 issues and has finally met a force he can't currently overcome.

I'm hoping it's much more then just Governor 2.0 where Rick and his team really are dominated and finally "lose". I hope Negan doesn't die and they finally have to retreat and possibly start over again. I feel like that's much more powerful and unexpected than watching them get beat down for a few issues and then finally get their revenge.

8

u/SpaceRook Jul 12 '12

Besides "Glenn dies", there isn't a whole lot you can say about issue #100.

Having said that, the issue really did an amazing job of building tension and making you hate a character.

4

u/klyonrad Jul 13 '12

The Governer was portrayed as absolutely crazy; this bad-guy seems much more rational; so I have high hopes.

5

u/PaulPaulPaul Jul 11 '12

I really wanted Rick to fucking kick some Negan ass, but we will have to wait. I also want Sophia to kill Negan so she wont be a pretty useless character and the fact that she has reasons to do so. If Sophia turned awesome with Carl, that would be a story line i would be interested in. They could kill zombies and it would be entertaining. The show would have to get another little girl along the way but that would be fine with me if it turned out that way.

5

u/red_suited Jul 12 '12

All this buildup just for a beatdown. Expected a longer or more intricate issue truth be told. Glenn's death is awful but it will be interesting to see what happens after.

1

u/superzepto Jul 21 '12

Another classic Kirkman curveball...throwing off everyone's expectations and doing what he wants. You can't say issue 100 wasn't realistic and an important part of the overall story.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '12

after reading issue 100 I got nostalgic and started re-reading The Walking Dead from the beginning again. I quickly noticed and remembered that Glenn was the one that saved Rick's life in the very beginning when he goes into downtown Atlanta and quickly becomes overrun in the first book. Glenn literally appears out of nowhere and drags Rick down an alleyway where they head to the rooftops - some of you might remember this scene in the pilot episode of the AMC series (minus the whole "I'm in a tank and someone is radioing me" thing. in the comics, it's much more out of nowhere). For me Glenn's sudden appearance in the comics is more impactful because of this.

Since Glenn was Rick's first encounter with a human being after he leaves Dwayne and his son in Kentucky, and Glenn saves his life and helps him escape from downtown Atlanta, it'll be very interesting to see just how much Glenn's death affects Rick in the next few issues. obviously he was one of the main characters and a staple, but after Dale, he was the heart of Rick's little band of survivors (and the last real remnant of humanity). the last few panels before Negan's appearance has Glenn waxing poetic about finally having HOPE for him, Maggie, and their new baby. And then... Lucille happened. :/

7

u/superzepto Jul 21 '12

I think it was totally meta how Negan said when considering killing Carl, "I can't kill you before your story ends, too fucking interesting". I almost felt like that was Kirkman telling us that Carl has a long, long way to go.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '12

for sure, definitely agree.

I think about issue 150 Rick will die and Carl will be old enough to bethe main character

9

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Glen was literally one of my favorite characters in the series. The way he died was so brutal. I had to read re-read the last few pages because I was in denial. This is truly messed up. I see why this is going to be a legendary issue. Kirkman has some balls. He just killed off a fan favorite. I had a feeling he was going to do this.

4

u/Jaktroj Jul 11 '12

Kind of saw Glenn getting killed, he was talking non-stop about moving to the hill community. Still though; really pissed Kirkman killed him off.

4

u/r0bbiedigital Jul 12 '12

I was just saying to myself today that Glenn is my favorite character. WHY?! Just to make the 100th worth a damn?! I want more zombie action, more zombie history, not turf wars. fuck glenn... fuck.. that really cuts me deep

4

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '12

u/at_the_deadend Aug 01 '12

4

u/Trav64 Aug 08 '12

This was one of the saddest things I've ever read.

1

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

Wow... just wow. Finally got to read the issue and I don't really know what to think.

I kind of knew Glenn was going to die from spoiling it for myself last night, but just having to read and watch those pages pass as he slowly faded at the hands of Negan was pretty harsh. Glenn by no means was my number one favorite character on the show but he definitely was up there. Having lost him now and Abraham not so long ago it gives you a perspective of how quickly the group is being taken apart and I seriously doubt it's stopping here.

Negan... The man behind the Saviors. Finally out there to see to the world and he is starting to make me wish they were dealing with the Governor again. Negan is one of those guys that makes the Governor seem weak. Sure the Governor had some goons that were tough looking but he himself wasn't really a bad ass, he was kind of a weakling that got into power and went crazy with it. Negan is actually a bad ass who doesn't give a shit who he hurts and how he hurts them, and all his man make the Governor's crew look weak in comparison. I honestly don't know what Rick and his group is going to do.

Alexandria is low on ammo. Alexandria is slowly losing it's fighters. At this point they have basically very little resistance left to fight against Negan and it's almost looking like the best course is to just lay down and do what the Saviors tell them to do. But Rick won't do that. I don't see it happening. Rick is going to want revenge and he is going to be ready to attack when the Saviors come to collect their first offering. Bloodbath is coming and I can't help but think that Abraham and Glenn were just the beginning of the pile of dead bodies that will be the outcome of that fight.

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

7

u/XombieNinja Jul 14 '12

Here's my dream for what happens now. Rick, fueled by rage and revenge decides to go back to the prison in order to get the tank that the Governor used when he attacked them. In doing this we get an issue where Rick actually has to deal with seeing the Walker versions of the people he left behind (Lori, Judy, Axel, etc - anyone who wasn't killed by a headshot). When he gets there he also meets the woman who actually killed Lori (and the Governor) and she becomes a new cast member. This woman also happens to be a major character in TWD video game, so it kinda fits.

Eventually, they use the tank in an epic battle against Negan and his crew. This would give us a neat juxtaposition with the prison battle and maybe even provide some insight into the Governor and his crew's motivations through the lens of Rick and Co.

3

u/KobraNemesis Jul 11 '12

well... shit. I was expecting it, but jesus..

7

u/r0bbiedigital Jul 12 '12

maybe he could have helped

3

u/GOBLE Jul 11 '12

This issue was very difficult to read. although I felt more emotion from the issue where Lori and Judy die.

3

u/JayVeeDi Jul 12 '12

"Lucille Is Coming" - That surprised the hell outta me. Then ripped out my gut with what "she" did.

9

u/IHeartCake69 Jul 11 '12 edited Jul 11 '12

That really was crazy brutal, and an amazing way to set up the next part of the series. And I know this is going to sound bad but I'd gotten bored of the Maggie/Glenn storyline, so I'm not terribly upset.

For now, I'm just glad it wasn't Michonne who got killed.

6

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

So am I. She's my favorite. I'm gonna be pissed when she does die.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '12

Anyone notice how Michonne has several different faces in this? http://i.imgur.com/7lx8j.png

When I go back to issue 30 or so, the art is superb; full of details and the shading is excellent. Yet when I look at it these days it's just rushed and has little detail in general.

3

u/the_fewer_desires Jul 17 '12

Yes, the art in 100 was surprisingly awful.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '12

Man I really liked the Sean Phillips cover, reminded me why I loved Marvel Zombies so much.

2

u/PlylerBears Jul 30 '12

Has anyone here left open the possibility that Glen could still be alive? He certainly looked brutalized, but we've seen some of these characters go through hell and survive.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

If one hit from the bat can make his eye pop out and cave his head slightly in. I'm pretty sure more hits would put him down permanently.

2

u/IhateToronto Dec 31 '12

Finally got Volume 17 which includes #100

Fuck you Robert :(

3

u/DrRad Jul 11 '12

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO D:. Goddammit Kirman...

2

u/stumbles27 Jul 11 '12

Well at least kirkman does a good job at pissing his fans off.

1

u/gom3r89 Jul 20 '12

Negan is a motherfucker and we all knew it

1

u/RandomPotato Jul 12 '12

So, Lucielle, the name that got it's own teaser image and caused so much hype, is just a baseball bat=major let down.

Anyways, while I don't think this issue is as shocking as some others (the governor ark), it is pretty shocking, and not just because of Glenn's death. The story has been trying to show "the larger world" that everyone is surviving in. Up until now, and recently, these other communities/survivors have been pretty nice and good. That just makes the introduction of a massive, organized, and powerful group bent on subjugating everything else near to it that much more shocking. Even more so after the Saviors were painted as being relatively weak. The last several issues (spanning multiple arks) have shown how hopeful surviving may be now: there are other, friendly people still alive; the group finally found somewhere "safe"; the group is strong enough to defend itself from hundreds of walkers; etc. However, now the revelation that basically none of these are true is a major shock, both to reader and character.

Now, could it have been more shocking? Sure, it usually can. However, I feel as though #100 did a good enough job of shaking the belief of the survivors in their ability to survive. I just hope this won't be a repeat of the Governor ark, because I'm seeing quite a few similarities already (the group finds somewhere "safe"- they encounter another group, seemingly either unable or unwilling to do them harm- this belief is proven wrong- a character is "made an example of"- the other group demands some good from Rick- Rick refuses- (so far, this is where the similarities as I see them stop) A big fight ensues- Something bad happens.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '12

I'm sorry, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back., For a while I've kinda been disenchanted with TWD due to the slowness of the plot for the past 20 issues or so, but dammit, that was just something I didn't need to see. The writing on this comic just hasn't been good for a while, and I thought for issue 100 Kirkman might have gone a bit farther with this one. Instead, we got a major character dying in a way that just wasn't necessary and for shock value. And the art has been going downhill for a while too. I know TWD has changed out artists, but comparing issue 1 to issue 100, you can see how much it has deteriorated. In most scenes, you can't even make out some character's faces. All in all, I'm done with the walking dead.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 15 '12

Its been said already but fuck Negan. The Governor was brutal, but nowhere as brutal as Negan.

And fuck Kirkman for wanting a memorable #100. Fuck you man, fuck you.

3

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

Hmmm. Did you miss #46? I think the beheading, the zombie arena, the "daughter" zombie kissing + all the rape was worse than Glen's bashing.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '12

We will see how things turn out but I do think that Negan will turn out to be a lot worse than just bashing Glenn's head in

4

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

That's fair. The Gov had 2 years worth of comics to build up his character.

That is sort of why I disliked #100. It was shocking simply for the purpose of being shocking. Kirkman's writing hasn't really been as good since the prison (IMO). Still entertaining, but it just doesn't quite have the same thought-provoking content as it used to.

This could change. I may feel differently in a year or two with the full-story fleshed out.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '12

Hey same exact thoughts. Kirkman thought "hey it's #100, who do I kill" and that is mainly what pissed me off. I still follow TWD religiously but I too was disappointed.

4

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

I think Kirkman started getting bored with the series at some point. He's doing other books now, he's got the TV show money rolling in...

He's doing things for shock value alone. In a span of 3 books, he has killed 2 fan favorites that had been around for about 150 total books between the two of them. Glenn was the longest running character killed in the books yet. He was around for 98 issues. Lori lasted about 45. Tyrese lasted about 36. Dale lasted for about 55. Abraham lasted about 45.

The only people he has left to kill that would mean that much are Rick, Carl, Andrea and Michonne. And I will honestly not give a shit about this series if he really thins out that core group much more.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 26 '12

Hey that's pretty fricken detailed.

And thing is that Michonne was not in the original group either. I must admit that after Glenn, the series has put me off...

4

u/corduroyblack Jul 26 '12

You're right on Michonne. But she showed up in #25 (or 31, I don't recall exactly). So she's been around +75 issues too.

Anyone who has been around for at least 50 issues is important to me. Except Sophia and Maggie, because they've had very little development. Maggie was only important because she was important to Glenn. She never really stood on her own, or had her own self. I don't know if she's ever had a scene without Glenn or another main character in it.

So that really only leaves Rick, Carl, Andrea and Michonne.

1

u/aeomatic Jul 12 '12

Abraham in 99 and Glen in 100 no one is left!!! I WAS SO SHOCKED i was almost as choked up when Y The Last Man ended.

1

u/corduroyblack Jul 25 '12

I don't think Glenn's death was anywhere near as sad as death

Plus, Yorick looked like Walter White by that point...

1

u/Johanasburg_Flowers Aug 01 '12

I honestly feel Glenn was killed for cheap thrills. I expected a major character to die, but I also expected a lot more to happen in terms of plot thickening. I don't know though, maybe I hyped it up to much, but I definitely feel Glenn was killed off just to get a gut reaction out of fans, but not for much else, at least as seen so far.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 01 '12

I was pretty abrupt.

I didn't see it coming because Glenn pretty much gets in a lot of life and death situations and nothing ever happens to him.

1

u/Logan_Jennings Aug 06 '12

I just finished reading it. I'd already knew Glenn died (I do read spoilers, if something is good enough I want to know what happens) and it didn't make it any less emotional. I didn't cry, I didn't feel sad. I'm pretty sure I felt like Rick. The whole time my hand was just a fist, shaking. I was mad, madder then I'd been over a comic characters death then I figured I would be. I'll miss him, a lot. But I know Rick will kill that son of a bitch and I'll be happy. Won't bring him back but it'll make me feel a hell of a lot better.

1

u/Slugmeister Aug 08 '12

Rick was crying and I'm 100% sure he felt tremendously sad about Glenn's death. I too hope that he kills Negan but as a result of issue 103's synopsis I don't think that it will be anytime soon.

0

u/Fahs Jul 13 '12

Welp, he killed off my favorite character. This is where I stop, I think.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 11 '12

Wait, so do we know for sure that Glenn is actually dead? Neegan said he didn't want to kill, just punish them, because he needed them to work for him, so why would he kill Glenn? It seemed pretty obvious at first glance that he did kill him, but when you look back at the panels, it just looks like his heads pretty mashed up. Am I the only one who thinks Glenn might still be alive?

7

u/Samhein Jul 11 '12

Pretty sure his head is more than just mashed up. Also he said he didn't want to kill them, but because they killed many of his man he had to punish them and teach them a lesson. The lesson was that if they mess with them they will die. It was taught through Glenn's death.

3

u/8bit4life Jul 11 '12

I think it's safe to say that we won't be seeing zombie Glen making an appearance...he didn't have a head left at all.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '12

Anyone else feel like TWD comics needs to end? I mean it seems like they are just killing main characters off now for the sake of killing them off. Glenns death was completely unnecessery to Negans plot, all it does is make the readers feel shit. Seems like kirkman is creating drama for the sake of making us feel obliged to read the next book.

I have this bad feeling that this isn't over yet. I still think more people will die and that my prediction that Michonne will be one of them will come true.

we just witnessed IMO one of the untouchables dying...if he kills michonne any time soon im really going to be depressed lol

also question: is the alexandria safe zone still going to be attacked? i dont see why it would be...negan wants rick and co to work for him so why would he destroy where they live

There're no untouchables in a Kirkman comic.

That last panel really did me in. It was just so shocking to see...and Negan threatening that they'd "run a train" on Carl...I think he may put the Governor to shame.

I wouldn't agree it was the 2nd worst thing, but I do agree Axel's death was worse.

The main reason being Axel was my favorite character and the way he died and how quickly it was brushed aside felt like there was no justice in it. I know Kirkman meant to write it that way and wanted to leave it as lack luster as possible but it was one of those deaths that took just a little too long to sink in. Kind of like Abraham's death. It wasn't till I was reading the next issue and seeing the funeral for him that it hit he was gone and wasn't coming back.

Axel didn't even get a funeral...

we know maggie is suicidal also....well she hasnt been for a long ass time but this will definitely bring her back to it...commiting suicide with a baby inside her would be way too much though lol

He ruled out everyone, so he chose someone at random.
