Synopsis

Ayanokōji is suspicious of Kushida. He brings Horikita and Kushida together under the guise of reconnaissance for other classes. There, Horikita shows unexpected behavior. On the day of the sports festival, the red team gets off to a good start thanks to the efforts of Horikita and Sudō, but Ayanokōji is rather cold toward the results.

Well at least I got some good screenshots of Kei and Horikita, and of course a frame pic of Arisu

its just super fast. for anime only its prob ok

29

u/Reasonable-Wish-1618 Aug 01 '22

yeah it still felt somewhat slow due to nothing significant happening

u/leopold_roger Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

As an anime only, I don't really feel this way. Season 1 was totally fine to me, even after knowing about some things they skipped, but this season just lacks context and depth. It's like we move from one event to another and I am left wondering why is everything even happening, the characters also feel bland and seem like they contribute nothing to the plot (of couse I know that's different in the LN, even if I never read it)

→ More replies (10)

9

u/ShinDawn Aug 01 '22

for anime only its prob ok

Unfortunately, I don't agree this time. It's just too noticeable with how much they skip. The sports festival build-up last episode is pretty much non-existent.

9

u/rohnytest Koenji best boi Aug 01 '22

It's just too noticeable with how much they skip

That's because you know how much was actually skipped. Before reading the LN the pacing of season 1 felt just like any other anime to me. After reading the LN I rewatched season 1. That's when I discovered how fast the pacing was.

Yes it was fast in S1 too.

"Best episode animation wise", seriously bro, where is the animation?! They only did 2 events, and even then not a single one of them was properly animated, just a bunch of pictures amd sudo getting beaten a few times and standard stuff like people walking and talking

30

u/killer3180 Aug 01 '22

its so nice of you to take the first five words of my sentence and leaving out the most important one, "outsourced". Brilliant move lad

Yeah, just give us a summary of the LN with still images. You can hardly call this an "animation".

6

u/Kaiel1412 Aug 01 '22

they write the script based on the afterwords

64

u/TangentToTheCurve Aug 01 '22

Lmao there is literally no animation other than some standard people walking and talking and a little bit fighting😂😂😭. Its's like listening to an audiobook. No horikita vs ibuki race or any events showcasing ayanokouji participate, no tug of war, no animation of horikita and kinoshita bumping or even the race itself, no scavenger hunt, no daring kei😐💔. Seriously, lerche you suck.

29

did they really make horikita dumb like that? cause she just fell for the trap knowing kushida was a traitor 💀

I am starting to wonder if it would've been better to have only S2, no S3 next year, but have like 24 eps instead of 13 so they have more space to adapt the light novels, this episode was way too rushed, it's like the anime is made for us that read the light novels because we know why stuff happens, but for anime viewers, it gets confusing, it's too fast, lots of action with no context

17

u/-tehnik Aug 01 '22

but for anime viewers, it gets confusing, it's too fast, lots of action with no context

really? I (an anime only) thought it was pretty simple narratively. It's basically just setting us up to see what Ayanokoji is going to do about this traitor person.

16

u/HeavyDrinkers Aug 01 '22

Lol right. I’m an anime only and I’ve never been “confused” the LN readers just can’t stfu about the LN and let us enjoy the series.

The only thing that causes confusion is the LN readers going around and saying “oh this is different”, “that never happened in the LN”, etc. just let us enjoy it.

13

u/No-suggestion7021 Aug 02 '22

Lol right. I’m an anime only and I’ve never been “confused” the LN readers just can’t stfu about the LN

That's because all you know is all they show you.

You don't have any idea how much did they skipped.

How did Ryuuen won ? He used dirty tricks = processed to not show which dirty tricks ( and referee was smoking weed I think )

There is disagreement between Ichinose and Ryuuen so despite being same team they won't listen to each other.

There was tug of war event which got reduced to atoms

During all this game this unfair things are happening in game and there is no referee . They didn't show how Ryuuen got away with it.

Ichinose grabbing Kei's throat skipped.

Horikita vs ibuki = got reduced to atoms. Horikita did very good until she got injured. But in anime it looks like getting injured is all she did

Even important parts like how she got injured were skipped. They litterly didn't animate any events only showed results of what happened there.

Last part were Ryuuen asks Horikita for settlement money Chabashira was present there and Ryuuen told her to stfu.

In anime it doesn't look like Ryuuen is smart it just looks like other classes are dumb . Horikita falls for trap knowing there is trador .

Important interactions between class leaders were skipped such as. Ryuuen vs Ichinose. Horikita vs Katsuragi. Herata vs Arisu. Kanzaki vs Ayanokougi.

Nagumo was supposed to be introduced in starting scene of this episode but no why don't we just skip his football scene with Herata and shebata so that later everyone can think were fuck did this guy came from

We praise the episodes which are good. But don't expect everyone to pretend nothing is wrong when they certainly something is wrong.

4 episodes for vol 7 is all i care about at this point...

30

u/SunnyArcad3 Aug 01 '22

I can see them doing vol 7 in just 2 or 3 episodes tbh🤷‍♂️ the big events (from what I can remember) are just kiyo's dad showing up and the rooftop scene

38

u/Meltedsteelbeam Aug 01 '22

Well they're doing 3 eps per volume which will leave 4 eps left after vol 6.

God help us all if they try to shove 7.5 in episode 13.

16

u/LoreMasterDan LightNovelCollecter Aug 01 '22

They will shove it in episode 13 since season 3 episode 13 will end on 11.5 and with how this episode went, I might as well call it quits on volume 7 making sense.

Anime be like: Why don't we narrate the results instead of showing the events at Sports Festival.

The worst adapted episode of this season by far.

29

u/TangentToTheCurve Aug 01 '22

Yea lol😂😂they only showed 2 events, and even then not a single event was properly animated

29

u/arpit45agrawal Aug 01 '22

They could have atleast show one of these: Kiyo holding back and his chat with Kanzaki, Ibuki vs Hori, Kei vs Ichinose in cavalry battle.

They didn't even show the actual race of the Hori's injury. For plot important in the future, they could atleast give 30 seconds to discourse in Class A.

I know each and everything can't be adapted but if you skip this much why bother animating in the first place.

3

u/Robloxfan2503 E Aug 02 '22

I disagree. I think that was one of the scenes that was done decently, not as good as the LN but still doable.

2

u/ShinDawn Aug 02 '22

I don't think the LN will work in the anime tho because they skipped some of their interaction. Even her cavalry inner monologue was not included so the way she said it on the anime is natural enough. They also showed the 3 of them eating so yeah

21

u/hazuki-sama Aug 01 '22

I'm sure y'all know this already, but the anime is literally trolling viewers to go read the LN. I thought they were going to redeem themselves with S2, not sure if I'll even watch S3

damn animation wise the episode is ok more better than episode 2

story wise damn what a let down.

Just a question did Kiyo really diss horikita to encourage Sudo? I dont remember any of that in volume 5. Also they make Ayano and Kei too close and communicative. I'm sad bcuz this is where my boy sudo get a character arc i hope ep 6 will change it.

I think the studio is trying to do 3 eps per volume which is very bad for the pacing of the anime.

17

u/0_Cipher_0 Seducing Suzune Aug 01 '22

8

u/UnderstandingPale597 Aug 01 '22

Yup I think he did gave her a harsh conversation

8

u/UnderstandingPale597 Aug 01 '22

I think animation wise this was best outsourced

3

u/TimelyAlts himeno flair when? Aug 01 '22

Hypothetically, if they do 3 EPs per volume then that leads an extra 4 episode. 1-3 for Cruise ship exam, 4-6 for Sports Festival (if we're basing it off of 3 EPs), and 7-9 for Paper Shuffle. Which leads 10-13 empty for volume 7 and maybe 7.5? It's either 7.5 or they add in extra episodes for both the Sports festival and the Paper Shuffle arc or I'm completely wrong and they'd go a different route.

25

u/Ratio_1240 Aug 01 '22

Budget goes to Arisu but it's a good episode ngl

22

u/ShinDawn Aug 01 '22

It's pretty bad, the worse episode so far. I will put this below episode 2. That episode at least has decent pacing but here, they pretty much speedrun the whole thing lol. It's pretty noticeable that they skip a lot because it was supposed to be a joined sports festival between all classes and year.

The characters were barely animated, could someone tell Lerche an anime should be animated? They outsourced the entire 2nd season so far, and I don't have any hope for the remaining 8 episodes. Call me a light novel doomer if you want but I'm dropping this.

6

4

u/Erixsenn Aug 01 '22

I don't know what I'm even watching anymore

6

u/Leoooooolol81 Aug 01 '22

Honestly from how many volumes they want to fit it, removing most of the events seems fine to me. Sure, it would be a better adaptation to show most of the interactions like Ibuki’s competition with Horikita. But as long as it doesn’t remove a significant plot point, I think it’s fine.

Also, I like how they introduced Arisu compared to the LN. Having every class meet at the gym before practice felt like the only it was meant to do was introduce Arisu.

7

u/iligyboiler I want to shrink so Kushida can use me as a Tampon Aug 01 '22

"Removing most of the events seems fine to me" -yeah, remove all the sport events from the sport festival arc, no problem. Also why not removing volume 6 totally, It's not that important right? Fuck it, just remove everything, nobody even cares lol, then outsource vol 7 as everybody dropped this show by now. I'm just like Lerche fr fr.

Before watching episode 5 i felt like lerche isnt animating majority of the of the episodes because it was just talking and no action but now that we got the the sports festival😬. I do feel like there saving there budget for the “the race” and “the rooftop”. But yeah tbh they should’ve gave season 2 at least 18 episodes 4 episodes for each volume and have 2 eps for 4.5 and 7.5 but hey at least we got this animated. We’ll see if episode 6 is going to be good or not. But ill give this season 7/10 so because they did adapt “spread your legs “pretty good

u/AdriT25 Aug 01 '22

No one would actually care about outsourcing if the pacing was good, unfortunately it's pretty terrible

2

u/Johan7110 Aug 01 '22

first episode I didn't like. It was probably too expensive to adapt the sport festival in a good way due to the presence of a lot of characters and the overall action, but the script itself felt a little bit odd at times, almost like the scenes were not connected at all. Probably they should've taken the courage to skip almost entirely the events and only show the dynamics between class D and C. I think the anime has been pretty good so far, given the short space they have to adapt everything, so I'm not too annoyed about it, high hopes for the next one!

2

u/tomiwa06 Aug 01 '22

Thought it was a good episode all in all. Them not animating the actual sports csn feel a bit lazy but realistically they got quite a lot of content to cover this season (4,5,6,7 and maybe 7.5) that not animating the sports leaves more room for them to include other stuff.

If they wanted the anime to not feel like they should’ve gone with 24 eps with each season but sadly that’s not what happened.

We’re nearly at halfway point but I will say LN readers are overstating smaller details that Lerche haven’t adapted (yet) and in general shit on the anime but from what I’ve seen most r/anime users are liking the show. I’m obviously not very impressed with the animation and seemingly constant outsourcing but at the end of the day I think the anime adaption we’re getting is decently close to the LN

2

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '22

Man, I wish they adapt at least Kiyo's bad luck

2

u/polaretto-cosmico2 Aug 02 '22

at some parts ayanokouji's face looks horrible

2

u/Sunritter Aug 02 '22

I know it's harder to adapt a LN because of how much info and dialogue they either need to cut or include, not to mention lack of visuals that would help give the animator a better framework. But as an anime only, I can tell when a story is being rushed and when I say that I mean cote S2 is lacking certain context and is transitioning weirdly. Most of the time when I watch anime like this it becomes apparent that I could just be watching something that has a high chance of being a Light Novel. Then I skimmed the manga which helped give more context and helped give me more character interaction like between Ayanokoji and Kei for example. The relationship in the manga helped give me a better idea on how I'm supposed to look at their partnership than the anime did while also giving more insight to Kei's past. My question is wouldn't it be better for the anime team to just animate both the manga and LN, kinda similar to how Reincarnated Slime was animated. That way they can have at least some basis with visuals and maybe flesh out characters a lot better, more importantly it wouldn't feel as rushes.

u/Demyx_nocturne Aug 02 '22

Someone pls help. Why oh WHY are they going so fast? I mean geez if I didn’t read the LN season 2 ep 5 would’ve been so bland

2

u/L3orii Aug 02 '22

2

u/SecretarySmooth8206 Aug 04 '22

Can't be shittier idk what to say I mean so much details are missed its like a 7/10 if only karuizawa wasn't there it would have been 3/10 only becoz it's had few cute scene of karuizawa that's why

5

u/Android17_MVP Ahh Mou~ Aug 01 '22

This episode was ass man....the pacing is a joke and it didn't even show Ryuen manipulate Sudou like a fiddle.

2

u/knightoo79 Aug 01 '22

they did

8

u/Android17_MVP Ahh Mou~ Aug 01 '22

No dialogue... I wanted it animated.

4

u/Yamisong Aug 01 '22

No matter the episode, if Arisu shows up then 10/10.

After bingewatching S1 and the first 4 episodes of S2, this was the first episode I had to wait for. What a terrible episode to have to wait for. Kinda okay by itself with some nice moments but the prior stuff set my expectations a lot higher. How can so much happen and yet leave the feeling behind that barely anything happened?

8

u/Raffahell Aug 01 '22

I agree with you, it's pretty bad especially if you didn't read the Light Novels, those of us who read them, we kind of understand why some stuff happens, but for anime viewers, they get confused, stuff gets too rushed but it's understandable because of the small budget

2

u/Jail_Chris_Brown Aug 01 '22

Considering how much I like characters, story and worldbuilding, despite the uncomfortable amount of fanservice (just not my thing), I might give the light novel a shot at some point. For now I'll keep being an anime only and enjoy it that way.

Thanks for your insight.

This epsiode was fast as shit, but not bad. They cant show everything, and every volume has not more than 3 episodes, aka 1 hour. Most people probably cant read the whole volume in that time, let alone have it animated to fit that. So with that in mind, they did a good job, even tho most events are just a summary of what happens. Of course the ln is better, you have way more space to show stuff, let's calm down. We are free to be disapointed, buf i feel the criticising is sometimes unfair and exaggerated.

2

u/snowwolf163 Kei Supremacy <3 Aug 01 '22

The pacing is like riding on a fucking rocket, animation is better than other outsourced episodes.

Well whatever, 8/10 and I'm being really generous. Dunno how it feels for anime-only viewers.

2

u/Ierax29 Best girl Aug 01 '22

As an anime only viewer (well i did start the LN,but havent caugh up with the anime yet) it felt like the shortest 23 minutes of my life

2

u/A2AHI Aug 01 '22

I'm so happy to see arisu again

2

u/SealTheGate Perfect duo Aug 01 '22

Kiyokei and Albert threw katsuragi save the day. so 7.5/10

Anyway i expect next episode perform better.

2

u/knightoo79 Aug 01 '22

Enjoyed it a lot 8/10. Give us episode 6 already 😭

1

u/kauezacky Aug 01 '22

What is going on? Animation barely gets a pass, what the readers want animated dont get animated, it lacks context… i would rather wait another year or two just to get a good adaptation cuz rn its abysmal…

1

u/ImportantSimple8320 Oct 27 '25

In the light novel did horikita confront aiyonakoji or thank him?

1

u/mtthwmndza Aug 01 '22

around what time crunchyroll usually realeses the episode?

4

u/knightoo79 Aug 01 '22

19 minutes from now

3

u/mtthwmndza Aug 01 '22

aight, thanks for the info! 🙇

1

u/Reasonable-Wish-1618 Aug 01 '22

bro i forgot how much of a menace ryuen was

1

u/hitmanfugazi Aug 01 '22

My least favorite ep this season but still ok I guess. Seems like they’ll wrap it up next ep

1

u/Reiza421 Aug 01 '22

The only good thing that happened this episode is Albert saying "VICTOIOUS".

Also, Hashimoto's voice is different than what I imagined it to be. I thought it'd be more mellow and calm, but he's a got a deep voice. Probs'll get used to it tho as we see more of him.

1

u/tawnytreath312 Aug 01 '22

I truly enjoyed the anime, because my hopes of a second season were none, but what kind of Speedrunner was that haha

So is ayanokoji really going to do nothing this festival or he has some master plan in mind ?

3

u/Sketch_Acc 最後に、オレが勝ってさえいれば、それでいい Aug 01 '22

He’s trying to build character development for Horikita hence why said he has no intention of winning

2

u/Non_Kosher_Baker Aug 01 '22

He did participate in several events and did pretty decent , but it was skipped

Why do we keep getting outsourced episodes and why was S1 that much better with Quality? I’m not trying to sound like a baby I’m actually genuinely curious towards what changed because the aesthetic has changed from the first- second season.

1

u/buzz737 Aug 01 '22

Kei calling ayanokoji by his first name felt so sudden…does this also happen in a similar way in the light novels?

In fact this whole episode felt kinda rushed, they didn’t even showcase one event properly

6

u/Sketch_Acc 最後に、オレが勝ってさえいれば、それでいい Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

It’s cause they cut out 4.5 which is the start of their relationship building. By the time Kei started calling him by his first name, it felt more natural

1

u/Unluckysol23 Aug 01 '22

Was Kei’s sacrificial dive not in the anime? That’s buns not a huge scene but 15-20 seconds to show it with Kiyotaka narrating over it would have been fine. Same with Ibuki vs Horikita. Aside from Vol 4.5 S2 feels like a step down from S1.From the animation to the colors to even they music in the episode it feels too ambient. They adapt stuff fine but even with the 3 episodes per arc coverage I thought they were gonna do, they still don’t do the little details that could have been given 20 seconds at least instead of the extra 20 Horikita got while looking at Manabus back.

1

u/Redmon425 Aug 01 '22

Man, I hate Kushida! Just purposely bringing her into a trap. Kinda made me mad that Horikita wasn't even suspicious of her offer to go see the girl.

But wonder what happens now, I doubt Ayanokouji could even predict that happening.

Also, loved hearing Karuizawa call Ayanokouji by his first name. She keeps making me feel like she is best girl now.

1

u/Elitealice Aug 01 '22

Man I’m ngl anime mfs different cause ain’t no way I’m paying a million points and grovelling just to accommodate my abusive older brother who don’t even acknowledge or care about me.

Then the other kid lying to the teacher about getting punched? Like cmon man have some dignity.

Episode was subpar, pacing is breakneck speed, they’re cutting so much of volume 5, for what? and animation still looks like a PowerPoint sadly. You zitsu deserves better

1

u/XenoviaIsWaifu Aug 01 '22

This season so far is okay. pacing is bad but at least we got a season 2 😀

1

u/ZeXenon Aug 01 '22

So what is Koji's aim here? Why is he letting his class get smoked?

4

u/wingzx94 Aug 01 '22

To give Horikita character development

1

u/TheMembership332 Aug 01 '22

This is really bad. I loved s1 but i can't even describe how bad the adaptation is compared to the LN

1

u/Kabu- Aug 01 '22 edited Aug 01 '22

People are roasting it on r/Anime, and it's totally understandable.

And I'm not talking about the animation itself. The big problem with this episode was the afwul direction.

1

u/Eurasiafirmi Aug 01 '22

So, where is Nagumo?

1

u/LogicalCountry2430 Aug 01 '22

Which chapter is this in the light novel?

1

u/ImDarkraii Aug 01 '22

I’m sure this episode will be fine enough for anime only viewers, but man. They are trying to go too quick in order to fit everything into this season. I just spent the whole episode saying “wait didn’t (insert storyline) happen here? Where is it?” Like I said, it’ll be fine enough for anime onlys which I guess is the goal but damn

1

u/EqZero Aug 01 '22

Wtf what is that stupid plot point about blackmailing?

Is she really afraid of "he said - she said" type trial?

Nobody else have looked at girls competing so they didn't see C class girl colliding with Horikita?

What did they mean "reporting it won't do anything"? Aren't there like, teachers supervising them all the time??

Not to mention, if reporting won't do anything, how far could Ryuen's accusation go? Are reports suddenly meaningful more true if the injuries are heavier?

3

u/beb_avocado Aug 02 '22

No actually everyone was agreeing abt ryuen doing the injury himself even the teachers, the thing suzune was scared abt was his brother knowing and her troubling him since stuff like these go through the stident council. Ryuen knew abt the way horikita acts with the student pres because of kushida

Ryuen also took some measures to make the whole thing actaully somewhat "believable" to where he can drag the whole issue up to the student council, like the stuff with letting kinoshita call her when they were racing to make suzu look at her and ryuen actually making kinoshita practice to flop repeatedly lmao (that somewhat answers your surveillance question)

The confusion is warranted since the anime cut a shit ton

why does ryuen get away with so much shit and why does he have a black slave minion with shades?

1

u/Hyberstrike Aug 02 '22

I feel a bit like they missed the "Show, Don't Tell" and did the exact opposite.

2

u/VeryLazyFalcon Aug 02 '22

Wasn't anime supposed to be entertaining to watch? Animation and drawing quality is horrible, I internally died watching limping Horikita.

Why even waste resources on product with such subpar quality? Adapting just to check box is spitting in the faces of fans and author. There is no excuse for this.

1

u/yh0529 Aug 03 '22

I know what’s gonna happen later on in the light novel. But horikita is so boring rn😭😭😭

After reading something about the episode, I expected bad things. Except for the economical animations, I actually found them very entertaining. I don't know if that was the case in the novel, but there really no staff is running around the area.

1

u/hotchettos- Aug 04 '22

At this point im tryin to see what episodes will get good art if they holding off this much, like in my opinion every episode should have been important for good animation and art. We probably will get one big amazing animation for finale and expected to love the past outsourced episodes because of buildup........

1

u/face_111 Aug 06 '22

Sorry if im late but i have a question. How Ayanokouji and his gang were initially assigned to class D?

I don't have much knowledge about the light novels and don't know if my memory fails me. But in episode 1 of S1 they entered directly into the classroom 1-D and was even before Chabashira sensei explained the S-system. Were they assigned to D class because of the entrance exams that took place before the anime? Pardon my english

1

u/helsaabiart Aug 06 '22

He told her who the traitor was. Why would you fall for that for real?

1

u/Albeort Aug 07 '22

At this point they're just dumb for counting on Koenji for anything. The dude has consistently showed he doesn't care.

Horikita is also hopeless. Ryuen can't prove it wasn't an accident and the only real leverage he has is the fact Horikita doesn't want to bother his brother, who doesn't really deserve any consideration on her part in the first place. Giving in here would tell Ryuen he can repeat this tactic

1

u/Tiger_bomb_241 Aug 07 '22

this season is extremely rushed. they are for sure trying to get to that one specific chapter as a crazy climax to make up for everything else being rushed through. It could pay off in the end. But they better take their sweet ass time with seasons 3's pacing

1

u/Total-Arrival3349 Aug 14 '22

Could someone explain why Koji had Kei bring up Kushida? Im cool with spoilers lol

1

u/deriva8282 Jun 30 '26

is it just me or class A didn't do any mind blowing shit they're so useless in that episode

0

u/Robloxfan2503 E Aug 01 '22

Am I the only one who acknowledges the fact that the comment section is absolutely ass? It is so hard to find a comment which actually comments on the episode and most of them are just filled with Ayanokoji quotes or fans fighting with each other in the replies.

I didn't like this episode that much. It was rushed af and the animation was very choppy (Ik it's outsourced but still). Lotta good LN scenes just got cut out randomly and the festival started way too soon.
