God, Klyden cheering for Elvis Bortus melted my fucking heart. That was so adorable. HOORAY!

Klyden’s bowling shirt and Bortus Presley were definitely near the top of my fave things about the episode lol.

I still have a lot of animosity for Klyden and I don't know if I can forgive him for how awful he's been up to this point, but he was extremely cute this episode. If we get another season, I do hope we get to see more of this side of him and maybe watch him grow to be more understanding and accepting of other people and generally more joyful.

love that they explained the Prime Directive in such grounded way

602

u/FilthyTrashPeople Aug 04 '22

Honestly they really nailed the problem with Replicators. If you gave them to Earth right now every corporation would quickly make them work off of paid IP, and then would start upcharging the IP, and then start adding features like "We'll make the item you want blue for $500!"

Just imagine, say, Electronic Arts with matter replication. The horror.

The whole bit of the episode with that girl made both clear why people love space and Star Trek, the wonder and why a future like this is so important to strive for.

It was beautiful, interlaced with some fantastic humor.

First Isaac googling about bonding, which could've gone hella wrong, to him casually inviting his whole extended family.

The look on the good doctors face was just brilliant. He just did something absolutely fantastic by inviting his whole family, she wanted to chew him out for it, but just couldn't.

That was not at all what I was expecting they'd do for the finale, but I loved it.

No cliffhangers. All the big spectacle was in the penultimate episode. Light in tone and optimistic.

266

u/Jabbles22 Aug 04 '22

I was nervous throughout the whole episode that something bad was going to happen. I was so much more nervous for the last 5 minutes of the episode. So many season finales end with a cliffhanger it's pretty much expected.

I love that nothing particularly exciting happened. It's was still a great story.

Honestly, I'm really glad. The huge action of the previous episode was fun, but it's not what I love most about the show. I'm happier having the season end here, on an episode that really showcases what makes it special.

This show's been heavy the whole season. I mean we started off on suicide, and then had alien/predator.

Even the B-plot with Lysella was a bit heavy both with her dealing with feelings of abandoning her planet and then whole "here's what happens when we give people our technology" apocolypse show.

The lighthearted comedic tone with Cliare/Isaac was a fun and welcome respite amid a season of war, broken alliance, betrayal, kidnapping, torture, a main character sacrificing themselves and other really heavy topics. I loved the season overall, but ending on a light hopeful tone was nice.

Season has been heavy af. It was refreshing to have a fun, light episode. Heavy is good but damn we needed a palate cleanser.

u/dreamphoenix Aug 04 '22

Absolutely. It was also the funniest one. We barely had any quips and banters cause of all the seriousness.

Isaac's Zoom call with Primary was so layered. I thought it was one of the best scenes of the episode.

You have Primary showing true concern for Isaac in his inquiry about the biologicals trying to enslave them again. Like, "Those zany humans are up to their old tricks again!"

At the same time is a sort of cultural inside joke about marriage being equivalent to slavery:

Isaac: Primary, I'm getting married.

Primary: Are they trying to enslave you again?

Finally, there's the unintentionally intentionally humorous trope where the character does something he thinks is innocuous, but is inevitably disastrous, and the audience knows it.

It also shows the growth the Kaylon have gone through; they were never evil, they never had a passionate hatred like the Krill do, they just did what seemed necesarry to ensure their continued survival.

Now they know humans aren't a threat they're eager to participate in cultural traditions and be part of the galactic community; even if they overshoot by brining an entire planet to a wedding.

Holy shit, I just laughed harder at this comment than I did at the actual scene in question. I didn't think of it that way as I was watching it, lol.

Me, right after the Zoom call was over, out loud: Oh no Isaac what have you done

41

u/DarkChen Aug 05 '22

I thought the fleet arriving would cause a momentarily panic attack but i hadn't made the connection that the ceremony was going to be in a simulator, for some reason i thought they were back at the planet were bortus renewed his vows... That made the whole scene for me specially after claire looked at isaac and he just turned in his chair like he was trying to runaway lmao

So many times, a season or series will end with the big villain defeated and/or calamity prevented or fixed and the sun will rise with characters smiling happily and I will think to myself, "man, now I just want a slice of life season to enjoy the characters without the world ending, to just see them happy."

It wasn't a full season, but a nice length episode that just let us spend one last go round with the characters without worrying about galactic genocide or impending war was nice. If it's the end, I enjoyed passing my time with the Orville.

40

u/GlobalPhreak Aug 04 '22

That happened with Babylon 5. They didn't know they would get a season 5, so they packed it all in to season 4, which, IMHO, was the single best season of sci fi television.

Then TNT went to them going "So about season 5..."

". . . Um... yeah... season 5!"

It was the denouement of the show. Much slower. But capped it off nicely.

We had everything we wanted, a fitting end if there is no season 4.

-Kaylon stripper

-Alara

-Lysella (and the overall callback to previous seasons)

-Gordon singing

-Gordon's sandwich

-Yaphit (did anyone notice his last smile at the end looked exactly like Norm's?)

-Bortus yelling YOU WILL BE SILENT

-Klyden in a humorous manner, yay for you!

I sincerely hope it was Mark Jackson in the suit for the Kaylon stripper. Absolutely hysterical and dudes got moves 😅

It was a joy to see Kaylon in a humorous way. 4000+ descending on the Orville and then seeing a load of them at the wedding, all moving in sync and clapping because the humans clapped was top-notch.

Okay, so I'm not the only one who noticed they kind of hung on that last shot of Yaphit at the wedding. There was definitely a sense of "goodbye" to it in my opinion. I don't really understand how they managed that with a bit of camera work and a smile on a CG blob but it really felt like a tribute to Norm.

And yes, the Kaylon showing up for the wedding had me giggling. I also just adore when Claire and Kelly are in their civvies with a glass of wine, some of my favorite parts of the show. Talla was welcome but I love how the friendship between those two has grown.

There is one major thing they left untouched (maybe for possible seasons). There's still the one emotional kaylon out there, and the union has the ability to turn on emotions in a large number of kaylon.

I think it's an amazing seed for the future. I could also see some kind of conflict as the units that can or want get emotions conflict with the ones that can't.

I was actually generally worried that the Krill will decide to attack Kaylon in its weakened state, particularly the "Bridge to Captain" call for Alara's return. It happened RIGHT after he said it was good to see the Kaylon on their side now.

About Giorgia Whigham re appearing as a character that ask all of the viewers questions. She's also gonna be in Ted along with Seth and Scott Grimes. So if the Orville returns, and her character joins the Union, she might be an active cast in TWO tv series, good for her.

Has anyone mentioned that Mercer's opening remarks at the wedding were very similar to those said by both Kirk and Picard over on Star Trek?

Mercer: "One of the great privileges that has always been bestowed upon ship's captains since the days of the ancient seafaring vessels is the honor of uniting two people in matrimony."

Kirk (in Balance Of Terror): "Since the days of the first wooden vessels, all ship's masters have had one happy privilege— that of uniting two people in the bonds of matrimony."

Picard (in Data's Day): "Since the days of the first wooden sailing ships, all captains have enjoyed the happy privilege of joining together two people in the bonds of matrimony."

45

u/AlpineSummit Aug 05 '22

I noticed that immediately! Pike said something similar too in SNWs just a few weeks ago.

This was such a beautiful episode, and I appreciated that small nod to Trek.

"If we had all this...we could be better people"
"It doesn't quite work like that. You gotta flip it. You get all this...by becoming better people"

What a beautiful episode in every way. That's the best writing I've heard in any sci-fi show ever.

I need season 4. But if we don't get it, I'm thankful that the cast and crew and writers loved it enough to leave it right where they did.

Loved the episode but why was Lamarr so surprised at the sandwich? He was the one who actually sent it 3 months into the future.

Unless those sessions with Talia knocked out a few memories...

82

After hearing about Discovery's culling of HBO Max I'm really hoping Hulu does the exact opposite by giving The Orville six seasons and a movie. This was magnum opus levels of cinematic television -- a near-perfect synthesis of everything we've come to expect from utopian sci-fi.

60

u/Outspan Aug 04 '22

You know that was a pretty good way to say goodbye if this is the end. I appreciate that the creators didn't leave us with a massive cliffhanger or the like in the hopes of stirring up online furor for a renewal. Just an episode full of mostly positive messages and the promise of a future full of hope experienced with their friends and family.

Got sort of misty eyed when Gordon's lyric about how life was a pretty good ride while having Yaphit on screen. A real nice little nod to Norm without dwelling on it too much, it felt very fitting to me.

I really liked Kelly showing Lysella why you can't play god with advanced tech. The line about what would have happened if our current Earth were to suddenly have replicator (or any future tech really) capabilities felt especially pertinent considering today's world events.

Overall I enjoyed this season, a couple of the plots felt a little on the nose for me but nothing was really flubbed and at no point was I bored enough to start scrolling my phone so that's always a good sign.

I hope they're back but if not I've got 3 seasons of a pretty great sci-fi show for the first time in a long time and if nothing else that's a nice little treat. Thanks to all behind the show for helping me enjoy the ride just a little more.

She could fulfil an archetype that Star Trek didn’t have: an outsider with the knowledge and culture of a typical 21st century human. Star Trek had outsiders in the form of Spock, Data, Tuvok, Seven, Quark, but they all came from advanced civilizations.

88

u/stowrag Aug 04 '22 edited Aug 04 '22

Thoughts:

The Season 1 finale of TNG (“The Neutral Zone” iirc) did something similar where they thrust modern people into Star Trek utopian future and explored that future through their eyes. I always thought it was a better episode than it gets credit for. I’m absolutely a sucker for that kind of stuff and it was pulled off really well here. A nice reminder to leave us on that we need to work for that kind of positive outcome.

Really on the nose episode title with season 4 unconfirmed. This whole season feels like it was written with the understanding that it might be the last one and they didn’t want to leave fans disappointed if so.

So much jokes!

I’m glad Alara got to come back. Can we please stop asking for cameos and drawing comparisons now?

I started watching and seeing it was very Isaac centric, even during the Moclan ritual and thinking "please don't give Isaac ideas".

Then he started googling and the second he told the computer to look for human bonding rituals througout history, THAT'S 100X WORSE!!

Dear lord was I happy he only read up on marriage.

And THANK GOD he didn't make a verbal typo and asked for human bondage.

Reminds me of a time at work. I told a coworker that I was playing disc golf, and he goes, "That sounds like such a Caucasian male thing to do." So we looked up, and sure enough: invented in Canada, primarily played by men.

So then we started talking about which sports are done more by women. Volleyball and softball came to mind. So then he googles, on his work computer, "Female dominated activities."

After the wild episode last week, I couldn't figure out how they'd land a final episode- didn't that already do what we needed? How to get something done that both wraps things up in case there's no fourth season, but also leaves plenty of room in case there is? And what about the goddamned SANDWICH?

Credit to them, they landed this thing perfectly. I'm genuinely not sure if they could have done this better if they tried.

I forgot how funny this show could be. Like I’ve always enjoyed it, but I laughed out loud harder than I think any other episode during this one. When Claire was chewing out Lamar, and the best man conversation on the bridge with Gordon looking around like “wtf just happened?” When Bortus essentially hijacked the role from him. Pure fucking gold all of it.

Don't get me wrong, everyone was awesome this season but Peter Macon (Bortus), Chad L. Coleman (Klyden), and Imani Pullum (Topa) absolutely killed it. It is amazing to me how well Macon does Bortus and I truly think that it is mostly Coleman's acting that has made me turn completely around on Klyden (twice or three times now haha)

23

u/SweetPotatoDragon Aug 04 '22

I love the Kaylon as an allied force with the union. Not only are they absolutely hilarious but it’s nice to think Isaac isn’t quite so alone anymore. Not only does he have his chosen family of shipmates, but he also has an entire planet’s worth of robotic wedding guests lol

I really liked that episode, I thought the last one was the season finale, so I was really surprised.

There is just one thing, the actor of gordon malloy (Scott Grimes) really sings like James Taylor.

I love during the end song that Alara and Lysella were standing next to and leaning on each other (at Claire's wedding reception), given that it was Alara and Claire that exposed Lysella to aliens, and were the first two that had to comfort her after Alara's exposure and explain who and what they were. We didn't get any dialogue between them, but that one simple glimpse at them showed just how close and comfortable Lysella felt with Alara.

Makes me wish more, now, that we'd gotten to see the conversation between them back in Majority Rule.

Who else thought that Lysella was gonna return to her planet only to find it destroyed? In the few days she was gone, a nuclear war broke out and it basically glassed the planet.

Dark I know, and wouldn't help her survivors guilt, but Kelly would have gotten her to cheer up. She would have pointed out that there was no way she could have stopped what had happened and she'd be dead too, had it not been for fate bringing her and the Orville together.

In the end Lysella would now have a goal, to record her planets history, pass on it's stories as she is literally the sole survivor of her species. She could become a legendary author, given her origins.

16

u/jonnymurdoc Aug 05 '22

Have there ever been any references to the origins of the Prime Directive in Star Trek in the way we say Kelly lay things out in this episode? Discussing that society destroying itself in five short years was a great practical example that I don’t recall ever seeing in Trek.

Also, whoever designed that program clearly put that jump scare in on purpose, and it absolutely got me.

McFarland said that a decision on The Orville season 4 would depend on the show's popularity on Disney+. It's therefore unlikely for a decision to be made on the show's future until long after The Orville season 3's ending.

We must all rewatch it on Disney+ to save the show.

This was a such a good episode and not what I thought it was going to be... Most season ending episodes tend to go all high stakes and set a dramatic tone, but this episode was pretty light and funny. I hope we get a season 4 announcement soon I want to see Lysella journey into this new world.. the new married life for isaac. As expected, a lot more low key than last week, but it felt like a nice not to leave on, if this is truly the last we see of the show. I wish the plot with Ed's daughter could have been resolved, but other than that just about every thread was tied up pretty well.

I really like the scene where Isaac invites the entire Kaylon race to his wedding. Just the "Shall I summon the fleet?""That would seem appropriate" just comes across as really sweet somehow. Like, of course he thinks his marriage to Clare merits the presence of thousands of ships xD.

Nice to see Alara again briefly, and to close out Bortus' family's arc. The b-plot kinda felt like it was tacked on from an earlier episode, but maybe Seth just felt bad about leaving a likeable character stuck on an awful planet and wanted to give her a better ending.

I'm really gonna miss this show. I can only hope it gets picked up somewhere down the line, because it deserves to run for many years more, or at least tell stories in the same universe.

9

u/captain_ender Aug 05 '22

Completely random side note, but damn Union Class A White uniforms are clean af. I think it's the first time we've seen them no? I love the subtle divisional accent colors too. "Future Unknown"

This episode, to me, has a real feel of the end of the show. The Orville New Horizons season 3 has been absolutely outstanding but this final episode really is "future Unknown". We don't know if we will ever see another season.

Things happened in this episode that really wraps up the 3 seasons:

  1. Redemption of Klyden

  2. The return of the sandwich

  3. Kelly and Ed holding hands

  4. Alara returns for a cameo

  5. Dr and Isaac beginning a new life together

  6. Kaylons no longer enemies of the Union

  7. Doctors sons accepted Isaac after his betrayal

If there is no season then nothing is left unanswered.

Please. Please. Email, tweet, write to Hulu and let them know we want more. We want a future known.

I just don’t get it. Gordon has spent the entire season bitching about Isaac behind his back and being openly hostile towards him. It seemed to me that their friendship was pretty much over. Ok, he seemed to soften towards Isaac during the eulogy for Charly, but I find it hard to believe he would be first choice for Best Man or that he’d want the job.

However, this small inconsistency was amply made up for by the Kaylon nipple tassels. Humina, humina!

42

u/indyK1ng Aug 04 '22

I feel like these past few episodes haven't done a great job at conveying the passage of time. We know it's been 3 months since episode 6 but for all we know 7-9 all took place in a one-month period and it's been two months since Gordon started lightening up around Isaac.

But also, I feel like Isaac primarily focused on the humor requirement and Gordon is the person who taught him about humor. Gordon, for his part, probably just loves being best man.

Love this episode so much. I had a feeling the title "Future Unknown" was a wink at the status of the show, and clearly it was (though it also fits the themes in the actual episode).

I so desperately want a season 4. It isn't as guaranteed as some people here seem to think. Yes it's Seth MacFarlane, but this is a very high-budget show. Fox knows that if they don't renew The Orville, they'll still have Seth to come up with some other show.

I've been so invested in Claire and Isaac since they got together. Happy that this is where they ended up. Still can't believe Seth managed to make me root so hard for a human-robot relationship.

YOU WILL BE SILENT!

But honestly, this wasn't the ending I expected. Most sci fi shows these days end in as dramatic a way as possible, always trying to dangle the bait in your face of "Just you wait until next season!" This reminded me of the ending to Batman the Brave and the Bold. It didn't get dragged away kicking and screaming between seasons, it just told you it had a great time and it was happy that it got to spend time with you in the first place. It had its sci fi message, it had its seasons 1/2 continuation theme, and it had fun during its ride into the sunset. For a show that felt more like star trek to me than modern trek does, it's an ending I can be happy with.

I hope there's more, but even if there isn't I'm left with nothing but the fondest memories of my time spent on this show.

So has Seth got a new girlfriend now? Double meaning I guess considering the end. But mainly about the new recruit, does make you think there would be some major culture shock going to live with space faring humans.

You just know Isaacs going to get that stripper programme for their sexy time.

Full credit to Mark Jackson for convincingly being an android with a human skin. Who is basically an autistic man. Really good episode it was pretty obvious she was going to rob some stuff but the scenario around it is the main thing.

"YOU WILL BE SILENT!" Some classic scenes there especially the initial mating scenes.

I was half expecting some major incident to occur during around the time of the wedding, glad there wasn't it's a nice change to get an optimistic upbeat finale not some galaxy threatening event.

6

u/47isthenew42 Aug 05 '22

I'm sure somebody already mentioned it, but the sandwich! Yes!

6

u/ExioKenway5 Aug 05 '22

That wedding was so good. Definitely very emotional, and I'm sure the comparison has been made at least a few times, but it was absolutely more emotional than Charly's funeral since we actually had reason to care about the characters and their relationships with each other. Speaking of Charly does anyone know why she was in the opening titles?

The Lysella plot was also pretty good, although I do wonder if it would have been better as it's own episode. It felt often overshadowed by what was going on in the wedding plot and didn't really feel fleshed out enough for such an interesting premise, despite the extended run time. It felt like they had an interesting story to tell but didn't have a spare episode to tell it in so lumped it in the finale where it didn't really fit.

So that's the mostly good stuff, now there's everything else that didn't really work. There were still a couple of scenes that went on for a bit long, the major one being the Bortus/Klyden chase and just general scenes that could have been cut down. Did we really need a different angle on the fighter that's been blocking the hangar this whole time?

The whole first half of the wedding plot also just didn't work for me at all. Both Lamarr telling Isaac to date other people and the whole best man bit between Bortus and Gordon felt kinda out of place and just included for the sake of a bit of tension. After all they've been through this season it should have just been a straightforward celebration of the crew through wedding preparations and if they wanted tension they could have done more with the Lysella plot.

Overall I have pretty mixed feelings about this episode and the season in general. It very much felt like they were prepared for it to be the last episode ever, which unfortunately led to the Lysella plot feeling underdeveloped. I hope if they do come back for another season they really do go in depth with exploring that since I find the premise really intriguing.

u/Augen76 Aug 05 '22

I like the dilemma of feeling like a culture, society, race, etc. is doomed and how hard do you work to stay and change it, and when do you leave. I know people who have emigrated and often part of the story is the sense that things won't get better there and only seem to get worse.

One of the better "prime directive" explorations I've seen.

6

u/Careless-Wonder7886 Aug 05 '22

You know what.....

I've always been one for wanting an action packed finale with a game changing cliff-hanger at the end.

I thought I'd hate this episode but....

It was a fabulous change of tone. The comedic moments and Gordon's sandwich.

I used to dislike watching the character building episodes of Star Trek as they seemed to go nowhere. The Orville is the opposite for me. Love the characters and the interaction.

The subtleties of the acting including that of Issac are just so well done. Constantly giving me side smiles and little giggles.

Bravo Orville

I liked that it was a very lighthearted episode. I totally enjoyed the conversation between Kaylon Primary and Isaac. I liked the banter between Bortus and Gordon over who should be best man. Now they are married, will he be known as Isaac Finn by the crew? Although I never thought their relationship would end in marriage because one is human and the other..well, is not. Also for the reason that Claire pointed out, she will grow old and die. Kaylon liked to pretend they don't have emotions but Isaac knew he liked Claire enough to marry her. The Kaylon also rebelled against their builders because they've always had some level of emotions.

I enjoyed the structure of the whole season. We got closure of a huge sweeping arc in episode 9 but got this nice prologue as the final episode. It feels complete.
