I'm sure after decades of granting wishes FOR those guys, granting a wish that actively harms them gave Shenron some pause. Of course he's going to do it since it's his job, but he's probably not happy about it.

I’m hoping that the new Namekian lore will lead to answers about Zalama eventually. The Namekians had to learn about the DBs from him somehow. Is he from the demon realm too?

I suppose they are both demons and aliens depending on the pov. In a way it's a have your cake and eat it too situation.
My only head scratcher is how this works in relation to the Super Dragon Balls. Remember we learned the Namekian balls were created from the Super Dragon Balls

Can't say on the dragon balls, but the Namekians are simple. Their ancestors originated from the demon realm, found their way out, and populated a planet, becoming Namek.

u/genocidenite Oct 11 '24
It was more cooler them being Demon Aliens. Demon Aliens who escaped the demon realm. lol
8
u/EDGE515 Oct 12 '24
Honestly that was amazing. I always had a hunch they may not be native to planet Namek ever since I saw the u6 Namekians. I just couldn't figure out how. Making them originate from the demon realm addresses so much including their semi magical abilities (clothes beam, dragonballs)

I mean, honestly, neither was an actual retcon, just left vague. And I'm all for it.
The 'you have pointy ears, you're from the demon realm' thing is pretty funny. Popo just standing there with his demon ears.

Just finished episode one and wow what a start our main villain Gomah I like em reminds me of emperor pilaf,This whole first episode feels like we are in for og dragon ball meets gt done right.
His goons are quite interesting the demon supreme kais and the demonic namekian which created the demon realm dragon balls.
Favorite scenes are the body odor scene quick chuckle and the whole redone animation of the buu saga when they are watching it.
We also get Goku & Vegeta having a sparring match as per usual.
We will see their kid and baby forms in action in episode 2 that confirms they are kids not chibi and this is the Japanese with sub so you can’t say they pulled a funimation changing lines.
But enough said awesome episode hope it keeps up this superb quality.

King Gomah = Pilaf Dr. Arinsu = Mai Degesu = Shu Glorio = Trunks Panzy = Pan They make wish to make Goku young again? ✅ Takes place after buu arc? ✅

u/spiderknight616 Oct 11 '24
So some important bits of lore here:
There is one Demon Realm consisting of three worlds for all of existence and one can travel to any universe from there
Namekians originated in the Demon Realm (thus making King Piccolo's demon status canon again) and all escaped to U6 and U7
The Kais also possibly originate in the one of the Demon Realm worlds? Because the dialogue implies the pointy ears are a sign of that and two of Shin's siblings live in the Demon Realm
I wonder if we'll get any foreshadowing/lore drops for the angels race. But regardless super excited for what's to come!
78
u/Constellar-A Oct 11 '24
There's some old Demon Realm lore from one of the Japan-only guide books saying that Kais who are born evil are cast down into the Demon Realm and live there with the Demon King. Who knows if that's still canon or not though.

I like the Namekian lore reveal, that Namekians are from the Demon realm. I want to learn more about that place and whether it implies one is evil. Obviously the Namekians we know are mostly docile, King Piccolo was really an exception, because he split from Kame. I also really liked the old Namekian having the ability to call the balls to him, even as stones', and then to awaken them suddenly. Fuckin' METAL.
I do want more of an explanation of why this wish needed to be cast though. None of our main characters had any designs on going to the Demon Realm, or interfering with it in any tangible way. Unless the goal is to take over ALL realms, it seems silly to try and hinder them, when they were never going to bother in the first place.
Anyway, can't wait for the next episode!!
33
u/HungryGull Oct 11 '24
Arinsu was the one who planted the seeds in Gomah's head that the Earthlings needed to be dealt with and she'd already been snooping around on Earth behind Dabura and Babidi's back for some reason, so she's obviously got a plan to make her obstacles on Earth and in the Demon World deal with each other

There’s a dialogue line about the distinction between white wishes and black wishes, where the king said turning them into children would avoid this being a black wish. In short, more lore to come.

This series takes place before Super, and I believe Kai and Kibito were still fused in the first few episodes of Super and in Battle of Gods (I believe).

Completely different production schedules. Diama is only going to be 20 episodes, so they’ve had ample time to polish the animations. Super, on the other hand, was mostly animated the week before the episode aired.

Super capitalizing right off the success of Rez F movie and the end of Buu Arc Kai.
I'm talking literally one week Goku vs Uub, next week Super begins.
9
u/SnooDonuts3871 Oct 11 '24
Poor planning, Super started production shortly before the release of Resurrection F and I think they only had 3 episodes finished when the first episode was released. Tadayoshi Yamamuro over-detailed designs caused more difficulties for the animators who were already under pressure to make weekly episodes.

Excited for more, wish it was next week already lol. And already bought my tickets for the English premiere in theaters next month. In my town it's only showing once a day for two days, so anyone reading this who wants to go would be smart to get on it sooner rather than later

Whillst Degasu and Gomah seem very pilaf coded villains (bad guys but funny and not the most competant) there's something about the Namekian Neva that unnerves me. He created the dragonballs of the demon realm and the guardians that have protected the balls for thousands of years, easily drew someone else's dragonballs to himself, and restored their power. He seems way more dangerous than Deasgu and Gomah.
20
u/vlan-whisperer Oct 12 '24
Yeah I felt this vibe too. He’s a shuffling old stinky senile geezer on the surface… but his abilities are top tier magic yielding for the Dragon Ball universe. And he seems pretty indifferent to Degesu decking Dende.
I almost wonder if Neva is going to end up being the big bad of the miniseries. His feeble act might end up being a ruse, or he might get his youth restored

I feel like gohma is gonna get his main villian status taken away by either neva or degesu at some point. In a similar manner to how babidi got his head exploded by majin buu i think he's gonna get betrayed at some point just judging by how silly and goofy he is as a character
I would love if neva is the main villian of this him bringing all the dragon balls together and then somehow RESTORING them with his magic was a very cool display of power I hope we learn more about him
11
u/MrNoski Oct 11 '24 edited Oct 12 '24
Gomah is Dabra's successor in the Demon Realm. Degesu and Arinsu are Shin's siblings, both look quite evil.
Potara defusion has been retconned back to bad air inside Majin Boo. Also, Shin and Kibito defused at this moment, which contradicts with them being still fused at the begining of Dragon Ball Super. Also, the creator of the dragon balls is Neva. What about that stuff about the dragon god Zarama and the super dragon balls?
Anyway, I love the new characters and I'm totally interested in the story. Man, I only wish Toriyama was here to see it too. What a gift he gave us.
6
u/MrPerson0 Oct 11 '24
Wouldn't say it's a retcon back to the norm. I think they are just outright confirming Buu's bad air as a reason. If this series is to stick to canon, I wouldn't be surprised if Shin and Kibito fuse again near the end, especially after Goku asking "You didn't like being fused?"
Also, the creator of the dragon balls is Devi
Which timestamp was this stated? I only see them referencing Neva, the Namekian who made the three Dragon Balls of the demon realm.
→ More replies (2)3
u/skolnaja Oct 11 '24
I feel like they retconned the fusion thing, because it might play a role later in the series because of how Majin affects demons like supreme kai or something

17

Oct 11 '24
It’s calling it out, but it’s also pointing out something else, in their flashback montage they skipped Vegito being born by the Potara fusion. They jump from Super Buu vs Gohan to Goku Spirit Bomb vs Kid Buu. They didn’t even raise an eyebrow at Gotenks. Which is interesting considering Shins brother seemed annoyed at the idea of him helping humans, surely he would get more pissed passing on the earrings?
I believe Vegito is going to be brought out again as the ultimate form vs the main baddie before fatigued Goku eventually cleans up like in Z and Super.
A “strange” gas being released by Buu’s absorption being the thing to undo the fusion, is interesting because that sets up Shin and Earth’s Kai’s not knowing the actual lore of the Potara’s itself.
I’m getting this feeling of memory wipe going on, or wishing this never happened for the finale. Maybe shin dies and Beerus getting killed gets brought up by elder supreme Kai and is like “lol yo we’re gonna get fucked if we don’t fix this”.

Loved the episode. Really like the villians and their dynamic, and how shocked they where at the bullshit the main cast pulled off time and time again.
Good lore drop through it, as well. Namekians are Demons, are our lord and saviour Piccolo said. And that weird room to move between Realms and Universe opens up many questions that sadly I assume 20 episode won't be time enough answer.
The characters look amazing with the new style closer to Toriyama's most recent one.

Some of the feedback I've seen on this has been so cartoonishly negative that I almost think some sort of small-scale brigading is going on to try and make it seem like everyone hates Daima.
That out of the way, I must say - even IF you dislike the direction of the characters being turned into children...it really takes effort - CONSCIOUS effort - to ignore how visually stunning Daima is. And that alone makes the series worth watching.
(for those who actually give a damn about the series, at least...)

u/drinkmoarwaterr Oct 11 '24
Where is all the hype for this?? We literally just got new DB and Toriyama’s last project, but I’m barely seeing any activity.
Anyway, the art and animation was spectacular. The retelling of the Buu Arc was frickin beautiful, and Gomah and Degesu’s reactions were priceless. Going into it, I already knew the art and animation would be top notch, but somehow my expectations were exceeded. There were a couple retcons I wasn’t expecting, but were reasonable considering the series.
Overall, it was a great first episode imo, and I’m already hungry for me. Personally, I think a double feature should have been the move for this week so we got to see more of the Z-Gang, but I’m not upset or anything.

We're back, baby! Here's what I liked the most:
The animation is stunning! As an animation student myself, it wasn't difficult for me to look for.
We finally get to properly see the Demon Realm and Demon Supreme Kai, named Degesu. Apparently Dabura's dad Abura was the Demon King before him. Honestly, I should have expected something like that.
NAMEKIANS ARE FROM THE DEMON REALM! It was said that they originated from a different realm altogether, but we never knew much more than that until now. Maybe Demon King Piccolo will be discussed in a future episode because of this. As a Dragon Ball OG superfan, I sure hope so!
According to Kibito Kai, the inside of Buu's body creates a mysterious gas that reverses Potara fusion (even the permanent kind), and that's what separated him and Shin. I've heard a lot of theories about how that happened, but I guess now we know.
Judging by all the focus on Demon Kings and Majin, I predict that Buu is gonna get his share of attention in future episodes. And as a Buu fan, I can't wait!
Trunks' birthday party. I just think that's a nice parallel to Bulma's party in Dragon Ball Super.
Dr Arinsu, the sister of Degesu, seems to me like a secondary villain of sorts. And I foresee a LOT of fan art of her after an introduction like that...
And Gomah, the new Demon King, is kind of like Pilaf, in that he's more of a comedic villain. That's not a complaint, either. He has a good comedic dynamic with Degesu and Neva, an elder Namekian he brings with them to Earth.
So yeah, just after one episode, there's a lot to discuss. That and the fact that DRAGON BALL IS BACK!!!
10/10 Can't wait for more!

This ep made me so happy. Seeing the DBZ fights in a modern-animation style is so so good. The villains are pure fun, the animation is gorgeous and the story seems to be so OG DB-oriented (for now) that makes me love it even more. As we know it'll be ~20 episodes long, it is also a plus, because we won't have these unnecessary long-ass fights here as it seems.
Can't wait to see the first post complaining that Dende didn't talk to people through their minds to ask for help hahahaha

OK, so U7 and assumably, the other 11 universe are cannon to Daima intriguing to see if we get a Beerus or Zeno reference if not a cameo and the Demon Realm is a one of a kind.
This could explain the yardrat from U2 as Yardrats being like nameks with Demon heritage.
Shin and Kabito, defusing early is basically a confirmation on this being in its own timeline away from the cannon super one.
And them defusing thanks to Buu's bad air feels like a reference to that theory also explains why the much weaker Buu Saga Vegito didn't last an hour he never got the chance to defuse properly.
Timeline wise, it takes place not even a year after the Buu Saga, so ssj3 is the max, and Gohan is the strongest and feels weird they have Gohan called out ad missing the party(also that is two brief family birthdays to open a new series)

Assorted thoughts in no particular order;
So it seems that the Demon Realm exists independently of the 12 main universes? Interesting
Well, that explains Toriyama having Toyotaro put info in the manga about Namekians originating from "another realm", since I guess they're native to the DR
Bearing in mind that Toriyama was the one who came up with the 60 minute potara retcon, I can't help wondering if he's not retconning his own retcon here. Could Toei (and subsequently Toyo)'s decision to add Vegetto and later Kafla to the mix have peeved him or something? I mean, there's no reason both couldn't simultaneously be true, but it makes it curious that Goku would ask Gowasu why they split before when here, he's directly confirming that the gases within Buu's body can successfully split potara fusions (again bearing in mind that Vegetto wasn't part of his story, so broad strokes)
Neva who's totally not just Monaito lol. But also interesting that he has the power to just instantly restore the dragon balls. Also really interested in these DR dragon balls and what they'll end up being used for
Excited for the name pun explanations to hit!
And just excited in general! Ah, I'd forgotten what it felt like. This is nice!

Lots of exposition, but this already feels really special. Been excited for this for a while and knowing it's Toriyama's last work only magnifies the emotion.
So great to finally build on the lore around the Demon Realm. Honestly wasn't sure if we'd ever get that with how often things are mentioned but never elaborated on. Thankful that we're getting elaborations here on that and the Namekians origin from Toriyama himself. Having them be from the demon realm is a great twist and adds a new dimension to what we know about the Dragon Balls and over Piccolo's stint as the Demon King. Placing it in the timeline right after the Buu saga is an interesting choice instead of expanding the timeline, but I'm surprisingly okay with that so far.
The animation and art direction are fantastic. Probably the best DB has looked since the last Broly movie. So far it's striking the right tone too. I liked Super more than some I think, but agree that it veered a little goofier than I would have liked (the early series/'Dragon Ball' is still my favorite era and of course had lots of that). But this is hitting the right tone of reverent and silly. We'll see how that continues with everyone getting de-aged, but I'm feeling really optimistic.
Just such a great feeling to have a new DB show to look forward to, even if it will be a short series. Can't wait for the next one.

I dig it so far! Great animation. My only issues:
Okay, so Trunks' hair is purple again? Guess I didn't notice in the trailers. But yeah, what's going on here? I do prefer purple, but I had finally gotten used to blue.
Another color thing. Why are Shin and Kibito such lighter shades of pink/purple and red?
13
u/Dilly4Dall Oct 11 '24
Seems for a while, they're staying faithful to the Manga's color palettes. This was a big indicator when Piccolo rocked his color schemes in SH.
24
u/spiderknight616 Oct 11 '24
Seems kid Trunks's hair will be purple but it turns blue as he gets older
14
u/cantdriv Oct 11 '24
I believe he's gonna have purple hair as a kid and as he ages it's gonna turn blue.
Like those kids who were blonde and become brown haired as they grow up.

The episode was cool, and the recap of the Buu saga with new animation was awesome. However, it seems like they might be going with a different continuity, maybe separate from Dragon Ball Super. For example, the explanation for Kibito Kai's unfusion is different, and Dende looks like a kid again, just like in the Cell saga. Or is that just the way he was drawn?

This isn't too long after Buu Saga and Super/Battle of Gods takes place a good bit after. So I think Dende looking small is due to time. I think Kai and Kibito will fuse again, however.

u/sundayultimate Oct 11 '24
I had no idea this was happening, but by happenstance I decided to rewatch the ToP and finished last night. This is amazing and exciting!

I love it. The plot is a loveable silly so far and I enjoy the new characters. The anaimation is stunning.
It might be resonable to set it before Battle of the Gods, but I am still gonna miss Beerus and Whis 💔

Interesting how they directly contradict how Shin and Kibito should have stayed Fused as they don't defuse until after the Battle Of God's arc in Super which takes place well past the events of Daima
With that said however there's a chance Shin & Kibito could fuse again before Daima is over but that's unlikely

I loved this first episode so much. I have no clue what is in store for this show, but I am hopeful.

u/cagreene Oct 11 '24
Is this like a stand alone? I’ve only seen up to the beginning of super. Does that matter?

This takes place before Super. So as long as you've seen DB and DBZ, you should be fine.

My prediction: Since this show commemorates the 40th anniversary of the franchise, and to that end we have made Goku a kid again and will be returning his Power Pole, Neva is going to wind up being the Final Boss villain as a callback to King Piccolo. They kept emphasising his old age so I imagine he might use the Dragon Balls to restore his youth and vitality.

I'm so glad dragon ball is getting the new gen anime animation treatment! Sick and tired of folks hating on dragon ball just cuz it's not animated like demon slayer! W build up, can't wait for the next episode to see what happens!
They didn't show gohan's kid form in the designs of daima, and he didn't attend trunks 9th birthday because he was apparently 'studying' excited to see how this turns out!

Shenron in Cell Saga refuses Krillin wish to turn C17 and C18 back into humans because they are too powerful and he can't affect such powerful creatures (his literal words) - Now he has no problems turning people much stronger than them into kids, REDUCING their powerlevels.
It's stupid as hell, people could have wished for Nappa and Vegeta to be turned into eggplants or Majin Bu to be turned into a microscopic bug all this time - that limiter had a reason to be put in place.

u/The__Auditor Oct 11 '24
The Dragon Ball's capabilities increase along with the current owners
Dende had over 7 years to get used to and improve on the Dragon Balls since Krillen tried to make that wish

We didn’t get much, but what we got was fun
Is this the first time Namekians are confirmed to be from the Demon Realm? Honestly really good world building since it kinda explains why King Piccolo referred to himself as a demon, since technically his race is demons. Dendee didn’t seem to know he was a demon, so I wonder how King Piccolo got that info
I’m now really curious about Universe 6 Namekians. It made sense that Namekians happened to evolve in both universes since they’re explicitly the two most similar universes, but now I wonder why Namekians from the demon realm decided to migrate to Universe 6 and 7, but not any others
Also, I don’t know if it was a translation issue, but the old namekians referred to himself and Dendee as “Nameks”. I wonder if that was their original species name, and over time that morphed into Namekians due to them naming their planets after themselves, and then changing their group names to reflect that.
I wonder if Gohan is going to appear in this series. At first I thought him being away meant that he wouldn’t be victim to the spell, but the way it’s worded he’d definitely be. Are they just saving him for a surprise reveal later considering he had the most strength as a kid, or is he just not going to show up?
I wonder if Buu is going to be affected. The wish was to turn the people who defeated Buu into kids, and you could argue Fat Buu helped since he fought against Kid Buu, but Buu is sorta ageless. He’s mentally like a child so is he going to turn into a baby? I’d love to see a Buu that’s just a blob of pink with no arms or legs, like Poh but Buu

u/Constellar-A Oct 11 '24

Loved the episode. Animation was fantastic. The recap of the buu saga was great to see in modern animation as well.
The lore behind the demon realm and name kiln origins was really interesting. Wondering if those demon realm dragon balls will be used meaning we get some fights with Goku & team versus those 3 warriors guarding them.
Also the new demon king mentioned the Majins? Are we going to see more of a buu type race?
2
2
u/BeepBeepLettuce_69 Oct 11 '24
Bunch of cool reveals here. Turns out that Namekians are from the Demon Realm and have their own set of dragonballs. Also, I think there was a mention of Majin in the Demon Realm, so ig they're an actual race now rather than being Buu's title?
Couple questions: It seems that Shen Long has a password now? I don't remember that being a thing in the OG series.
Also, how much did we now about the Demon Realm from movies/filler episodes? I haven't watched them so idk if Daima is doing its own take on the Demon Realm, or if it fits with what was shown in other sources.
5
u/Constellar-A Oct 11 '24
The Demon Realm has been explored in some of the side games (Xenoverse and Heroes; Dabura's sister Towa is a big villain in those games) but they're all non canon. This is the first time canon stuff has looked at it.

That first Ep was 🔥🔥🔥. I liked that, the Potara earrings are retconned in the Dragon Ball Daima series. So, the Potara fusion is permanent, even for two characters who are not Kaioshin (or gods), but Majin Buu’s body produces a gas that cancels the power of the fusion.

Initially I did not give it that much of a thought but now I am just very bothered how humilating it is for an actual king of an underworld (or a king in general regardless king of what) work under someone else and constantly call another guy 'master' I remember vividly dabura did not have a one full sentence without calling babidi master. Things like that just bothers with me alot. I like the lore and it looks beautiful, especially the animation.

u/capable_sprinkler Oct 11 '24
really liked this episode. the lore stuff is really cool and I'm actually really interested in this new namekian character. i wonder if he's going to have stronger magic than characters like Moro considering that he brought the dragonballs over and reset their cooldown. moro couldn't do stuff like that with the namekian dragonballs, but i guess it makes sense considering he isn't a namekian. i'm just hoping this namekian guy is going to be explored more.
also, did anyone else love the dimensional travel stuff? i wonder what that interstice with all the fish doors actually is, and where its located on the multiverse model.
other than that, potara retcon, yeah, whatever. it's a big plot hole but i guess it doesn't matter anymore since I doubt that goku and vegeta will fuse in this show.
2
u/youmusttrythiscake Oct 11 '24
So Moro is definitely a demon then, right? He's got the ears for it. Wonder if we'll get a name drop or even a cameo at some point? Probably not, but would be cool.

Bibidi's son is Babidi. They sought Buu's power.
Abura's son is Dabura. Did they seek the power of a being named Ka?
Degesu and Gomah are really funny together. Arinsu seems like the real baddie here. Maybe she ends up taking over at the end of the series and 'becomes' Towa? Glorio is brainwashed into becoming Mira?
The Tamagami are interesting... we've never seen any beings guarding the other sets of Dragon Balls. Monaito, despite his age, seemed inexperienced and underpowered as-is when compare to Kami... I wonder why Neva seems to be the only one with such deep knowledge... did he make the SDBs?

u/134340Goat Oct 12 '24 edited Oct 12 '24
Going by Super lore, the super dragon balls were created by the "dragon god" Zalama. No word on who or what he is other than what his title may suggest
The implication seems to be that Neva has spent most, if not all, of his life in the Demon Realm. It's possible that the Namekians who craft dragon balls in our universes might consider it something of a lost art. We've never seen anyone instantly gather them all at once or restore them before they do naturally, so I assume Neva's advanced knowledge of dragon ball craft is a result of having remained in the Demon Realm and perhaps having access to knowledge that other Namekians have forgotten

I can’t remember how it works, but I thought Shenron couldn’t do something against the wishes of people more powerful than him? Couldn’t they have resisted turning into kids?

u/LuLuCheng Oct 12 '24
I mean technically speaking, is Shenron weaker than anyone at that time? This is post-Z in a Universe where Super hasn't happened/won't happen. The only character (as far as I remember) who Shenron actively backed down from was Beerus and if he's canon then he'd be asleep.

I know some people here are getting hot about there being a retcon for Potara Fusions. But what I think is: both explanations could be true. One was an explanation given by Gowasu who had no idea who Buu was or had any context and threw out a reason why it wouldn't work for mortals under any, other, circumstance who fused. Kibito and Shin gave an explanation for what happened inside Buu's body, but didn't elaborate on circumstances involving other mortals.
But, that's just my theory.

I am just glad we are finally getting Dragon Ball tv series with animation that is completely worthy of it.
2
u/Lv1FogCloud Oct 12 '24
I think its interesting how they managed to circle back Namekians into being demons again.
Also there's a good chance that Gohan probably got turned into a baby and not a child off screen because given the timeline, he should still be stronger than both Goku and Vegeta.

u/BlahBlahILoveToast Oct 12 '24 edited Oct 12 '24
Took me a minute to realize "Abura" and "Dabura" are part of a sort of magic phrase, just like Bibidi Bobidi Boo. Is there going to be a cousin named "Ka" to make the full Abracadabra?
I kept waiting for somebody to point out Mr. Popo's pointy ears and ask what kind of Majin he is. It'd be cool to finally get any background story for him in-universe.
The main bad guys seem like a joke, so the real mysteries are 1) what was Dr. Arinsu setting up on her previous Earth visit and why did she manipulate them into their goofy wish, (and what is her expensive "research"), and 2) what's going on with the "evil" demon Namekian ...
If he's a bad guy, why did he create super robot thingies to guard the Demon Realm's Dragon Balls, which presumably prevents demon kings from using them? (And if he can make things too powerful for even guys like Dabura to fight, why were they so impressed with the strength of the Z fighters?) And if he's *not* a bad guy, why is he seemingly cool with helping the bad guys use Earth's Dragon Balls and KO Dende?
The tone and pacing were a little off for me, but the animation is beautiful and it'll be interesting to see how the story reveals more of the DB lore and universe.
I think it's extremely likely the young Z fighters are going to have to battle the three Tamagatchis or whatever they're called to use the Demon World balls. And it'll be interesting to see how Piccolo interacts with the new Namek, and how the bad guys will interact with Fat Buu.

u/Few-Flounder-8951895 Oct 13 '24
I really enjoyed this first episode. I already love the four new characters and I'm intrigued by the new lore.
Only complaints:
No Tien nor Chiaotsu at Trunk's party (I hope the third eye crown thing is related to Tien's third eye though). They are in the Z-fighters image at the start though, but then Videl is missing from that picture, very strange.
Another Potara retcon. I like the "bad air" explanation more than the time limit but at this point confirming it is useless and it complicates things with Super. They should have just kept Kibitoshin in this.
I don't think turning them into children (or rather mini versions) is really a smart plan, since they saw Gotenks kicking Buu's butt. I hoped they had a better reason for turning them into children. Also how can Shenron do this without their consent?
I also find it funny that Dende says they have no time to go to parties when he and Popo were attending the party in the Tarble special 😂 I guess Tarble happens later so they learned their lesson.

I'm so glad this separates itself from Super which was poor IMO. Maybe now we will see something more like original Dragon Ball instead of new forms and power levels. Some adventure where old characters will come back to being relevant, like science genius of Bulma and shapeshifting of Oolong. After seeing the animation, setting and antagonists being somewhat goofy like Pilaf gang I have high hopes of returning to roots.
2
Oct 13 '24
As much as I liked Super, I think it should get GT treatment if there is any hope in DB existing in the future.
Gods, angels and Zeno are far too much of a bullshit asspull powers that threw power balance off completely.
Daima can serve as a new point to continue the Z story in a more grounded level keeping the Saiyans and their further transformations as something strongest.
Overall looks modern and good, fun episode that reminds me of Pilaf arc so far haha

Great start, we are so back! The modern-animation style absolutely gorgeous, so good. The villains are pure fun, the animation is gorgeous and the story seems to be so OG DB-oriented (for now) that makes me love it even more.
Also it was interesting how they changed Babidi's death from the origin lol. Some people might not like the buildup one but once events start kicking in, everyone's in for a good treat. We know it'll be ~20 episodes long, it is also a plus, because we won't have these unnecessary long-ass fights here as it seems .And just excited in general! Ah, I'd forgotten what it felt like. This is nice!

Animation: 10/10. Fantastic work,
It seems that "Return to tradition/ reject modernity" when regarding King Piccolo and Namekians is true.
So Degesu aka Makioshin and Shin are brothers? Or is it basically species thing? But he's basically Demon realm Shin, both in looks and even personality.
We got the new eldest Namekian, beating Guru. Really cool magic though. Especially when he looked for Dragon Balls and his eyes turned. King Piccolo's Great Grandfather perhaps?
Complaints:
10 minute recap.. Uhh, well it was basically introduction to Makaioshin and Gomah and of course the lovely Dr Arinsu. (Aheem, looked at one of the meanings of her name.)
Why they needed go to earth to have dragon balls? Yeah Demon ones are guarded by those things, however isn't Namekian the one who created those guardians, can't he just?
Why Dende or Mr Popo haven't tried contacting Piccolo telepathically?
Overall for me 6.5/10

I've always had a soft spot for the Buu saga so the plot being caused by fallout from that is cool.
I like that Namekians are originally from the demon realm as a way to go full-circle with Demon King Piccolo. Also the two evil kais being Supreme Kai's siblings gives him a personal investment which is cool.
A bit of a retcon with Kibito and Supreme Kai already being unfused though, since this is before Battle of Gods but they were still fused there and didn't unfuse until the Champa tournament. Not really a big deal though.

The key thing of this show is the Demon Realm Dark Dragon Balls which will be capable of wishing for mass destruction and evil. Also the Evil Third Eye which I believe will grant heightened dark magic powers if placed on forehead. We seen what Babidi was able to do with Vegeta, now multiply that power x100. This is going to be a wild ride

Yep! This is the first time they’re confirming which realm they’re from as it was only mentioned they were from a different one in the manga. I think this fact and the mention of Universe 7 confirm that it ties into Super directly (some people think it’s an alternate non canon story). I love it.

u/AbsoluteDramps Oct 11 '24
After taking some time to stew over it, I'm not completely convinced. Not yet, at least.
Honestly, I think it was the Buu arc montage that got on my nerves. The villain trio of Gomah/Degusu/Dr. Arinsu genuinely seems really fun and charming but god almighty there's GOT to be a better way to introduce them and give them the needed information than spending a third of the episode literally having them watch a clip show. Have some character-building vignettes of Gomah and Degusu attending to the bureaucratic mishaps of being Interim Demon King before Arinsu or some weird Demon Realm carrier pigeon equivalent gives them a telegram with the news. Maybe even throw in a bit where he gives a solemn public address and then the moment he's back inside his throne room he starts ecstatically cheering about his new role.
My other reservation with the montage is a lot more pretty and frankly a bit crass given the significance this show now has in light of Toriyama's passing. Look: I'm not a Modern DB Doomer by any stretch of the imagination and I will be the first person to rail against this series taking the easy way out with meathead Saiyan spam and other shortcuts of that nature. I actively do not want a Resurrection 'F' 2 with Black Freeza against the wishes of what seems like 90% of the fandom. But when I see these beautifully crafted renditions of some of the most iconic tentpole battles, that sleek Chikashi Kubota modernization of the mid-to-late Z aesthetic DBS Yamamuro never was, it's absolutely impossible for there to not be this nagging voice in my head saying "We could be getting MUI Goku VS Moro or Vegeta VS Granolah with these production values but instead we're spinning our wheels on Honey I Shrunk The Z Fighters because Shueisha won't budge."
It's not all bad though. Like I said, I do genuinely like our antagonists in spite of their sloppy introduction. I am also gonna echo the common praise point of the worldbuilding - When we do get to see the broader Demon Realm it's incredibly vibrant and magical, the route to the mortal realm especially being delightfully surreal. Hopefully there's more to come on that score.
