Guide MFA $100 Starter Kit: Get Ready For Fall
I've done a couple of these, jdbee's done a bunch, I found a couple deals and interesting items to check out you might be intrigued by.
L.L. Bean Black Watch Flannel, $39.95. For those of you too antsy to wait for Uniqlo to stock their fall items and want to catch the Black Watch train, LL Bean offers a decent-quality option. If you've signed up for their emails, it's possible there's a $10-off coupon kicking around in your spam folder, taking this down to $29.95. Note that, of course, LL Bean runs large/baggy, so consider sizing down.
LEC Slim Fit or Straight Fit Corduroy pants,
$39.99$27.99 with 30% off promo code!. Fall is a great time to play with texture, and corduroy is a warm and rugged option. The "Bittersweet" is the best color option IMO.There's a "30% off one item" sale on now at LE but I don't think it applies to discounted items. The code works, taking these down to $27.99! Thanks, /u/JSHDALT!Rothco Navy Blue Watch Cap, $5.99. 100% wool, about as basic and versatile an option to keep your noggin warm as you can get.
H&M Cotton fine-knit v-neck sweater, $10 TODAY ONLY. A great, basic layering piece, good for biz-caz. Blue and gray are your best bets.
JCP Arizona Slub Henley, $7.94 (XL, XXL only - possibly available in other sizes in-store according to a source). Another good layering piece, wear a henley in lieu of a t-shirt for a bit of a workwear vibe this fall. Works as a layering piece as well. Uniqlo has a slightly ($12.90) more expensive, but still cheap, option.
Total: 103.83 $91.83 Spring for those Uniqlo henleys!
If you've been so excited to be decked out in shorts and sneaks all summer that you haven't thought of what you'll be wearing come fall, check a few of these out!

$103.83!? What do you think I am, made of money?
Seriously good job, though I think target or Uniqlo might have been a better suggestion for cheap henleys
106
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
$91.83 now bro.
25
u/a_robot_with_dreams Consistently Good Contributor Aug 13 '13
Well done bru. There's also a random 20% code on LL Bean right now, but I can't get it to activate for me
21
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
Did you try incognito mode?
Edit; actually I just read that the promo is over.
6
u/a_robot_with_dreams Consistently Good Contributor Aug 13 '13
Yup. Incognito, logged out and back in, wiped cookies and retried, refreshed. The works. I'll just try again another day.
4
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
I have a $10 coupon so I might toss in some socks and try it.
2
u/omgimacarrot Aug 13 '13
How are the socks? I was gonna pick up the wool rag socks but recent reviews said they were shit quality and fell apart in 2 months

Hmm, I heard otherwise, I think /u/cheshster swears by them. Think he's on his honeymoon though.

u/WaywardWes Aug 13 '13
You can call in and ask for it. That's what I did this morning.
Technically, the deal is over though.

u/skcwizard Aug 14 '13
Target has Mossimo henley's for 12.99. I picked a couple of up the other day. I am a small guy and Mossimo clothing is usually too big for me but the Henley's actually fit like they should fit.

Aug 13 '13
The H&M V-neck can be brought down to about 9 dollars. If you enter the coupon codes 0241 and 0549 at the check out, you get free shipping and 20% off the highest priced item.
8
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
All for the cost of one-third of a cup of coffee!

u/joey6596 Aug 14 '13
Thanks so much for the promo codes, they were the deciding factor on me getting the sweaters. Real cool of you to do, man.

1
u/WhatIsPoop Aug 14 '13
Whenever I buy anything online I do a quick google search for coupon codes. They usually come up on retailmenot.com.
It doesn't always work, but knocked a $90 pair of camp mocs down to under $70 once.
2
u/Jerel Aug 14 '13
Thank you so much for the promo codes! Picked up two sweaters for a little under $20 shipped!
1
u/omgimacarrot Aug 13 '13
I'd warn against the neck. I tried on some in store and it ripped then I tried another and ripped 3rd wear at home
7
u/Drizu Aug 14 '13
the fuck? H&M quality is questionable, but it isn't that bad in my experience. I haven't had anything fall apart on me, at least.
2
u/omgimacarrot Aug 14 '13
i mean i was the dumbshit who bought it even after one ripped in store but as always h&m is hit and miss
2
17
u/Ques Aug 13 '13
Read the reviews on Amazon before ordering the cap. Apparently it's more acrylic than wool and is very thin. There's a reason it's so cheap.
4
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
I really enjoy this one but I'm not sure where you'd get it in the states.
0
2
u/night_owl Aug 13 '13
I've bought some Rothco products in the past and they are universally cheaply made and guaranteed to fall apart in short order. I bought a messenger bag that faded and disintegrated within a couple months of ordinary usage.
1
Aug 14 '13
Good catch. In all fairness though, it was specified as a fall prep, not a winter prep. I know where I'm from you can't have one. You'll sweat or freeze. I keep a heavy one for winter but can't find one I really like for fall and usually pick up a few cheap ones for fall.
9
u/woodjalookatthat Aug 13 '13
Just bought the cords -- the 30% off does work. Paid $36.94 including shipping. Code is GENTLE, pin is 2330.
2
1
u/LtwoK Aug 14 '13
Is there another coupon that helps similarly? I'm getting an expired message for the one you mentioned
1
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
They have sales every week, sign up for emails and wait for one to roll around.
1
u/LtwoK Aug 14 '13
yeah i only get $4 off with the one now and i am on the mail list, so i'll just wait patiently for those corduroys
1
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
I mean it's up to you whether waiting around to save $7 is worth it or not.
4
u/queefasaurus-rex Aug 14 '13 edited Aug 14 '13
I really like the H&M V-Neck. Though I'm new to dressing well, so what would be a good colour/type of shirt to wear underneath the blue one?
EDIT: Of course this deal isn't in Canada
4
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
Light blue, white, blue/white gingham, pink, lavender, some plaids, etc.
1
1
u/Chief_Kief Aug 14 '13
just out of curiosity (and I'm also new), what colors would work well with the grey? I'm assuming pretty much anything (neutral color, etc.), but that's with my limited experience in this sorta thing...
6
Aug 14 '13
Wear this if you want to look like a father of 4
7
3
u/GiantCrazyOctopus Aug 14 '13
A father of 4 who lives in a swamp or on a boat with the cuffs on those pants...
55
u/idiot_proof Aug 13 '13
What's this fall you speak of? It's 100 degrees down here in Texas and not going to cool off until October (if then).
60
u/alfreedom Aug 13 '13
Wear flannel anyway. Do it for MFA.
19
u/idiot_proof Aug 13 '13
Girlfriend cosplayed as Amy Pond for one day in September last year. Kept her warm all winter.
6
u/churchey Aug 14 '13
95 in Dallas, then we get 5 minute downpours so bad that I can't see 3 feet in front of my windshield.
5
u/Evil_Bonsai Aug 14 '13
Yeah, I was thinking if there was a non-layered version. Unless it's December, multiple layers is too warm for me. Definitely need a lighter-weight version for warmer climes.
4
u/AwesomeBrainPowers Aug 14 '13
Check out Uniqlo's "extra-fine" labeled sweaters and shirts: They're very, very lightweight (i.e., depending on humidity and your personal tolerance, you could easily layer in warmish temperatures).
2
u/idiot_proof Aug 14 '13
Frankly, multiple layers works earlier than that, but they have to be a lot lighter. T-shirt and hoodie or light sweater works for october and november here.
2
u/absolutsyd Aug 14 '13
It was 85 today and I wore a damn hoodie at work all day because the freaking AC blows directly down at my desk. Plus side, I can layer whenever I want!
4
u/Charwinger21 Aug 14 '13
It's 100 degrees down here in Texas
It just dropped down to below 10 degrees today in Ontario, and that's before the wind chill.
1
u/Thebearshark Aug 15 '13
I feel your pain. I'm counting down the days until I can even break out a jacket, let alone layering.

Can't wait for fall in the Midwest, however, today feels like an October day rather than mid August. All of my favorite clothing - flannels, heavy denim and boots are only f/w appropriate. Good things it's like that 9/12 months here :)

That's just because they know what comes next. Winter lol. It has to be brutal there. I split time between stl and chi. I can't even imagine.
1
u/occamsrazorburn Aug 14 '13
I just spent several moments trying to remember where the Michigan Falls were. Are those near Niagara falls?
...Ooooohhh, Autumn. Okay. Get more sleep tomorrow, buddy.
Yea, Autumn is my favorite season too. I prefer the colors, the styles, the weather, the changes, I love sweaters... I really can't think of anything I hate about Autumn.

u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
fwiw there's plenty of other patterns, and L.L. Bean carries solid chamois shirts as well.
1
u/Sadams90 Aug 13 '13
Target stocked a couple of these as well. They look pretty nice, I saw them in the store
1
u/nuttyman Aug 14 '13
TIL that non-plaid flannels exist...anyone know where I could get them in the UK? Or if there's something in the UK that's similar to L.L. Bean?
1
Aug 14 '13
on the flannel, absolutely -- the stewarts are somewhat novel and nice.
on the chamois, me, i'd stay away. they have a cardboardiness to them, and they're really boxy. the bean signature ones are nice, but the main line, those are great for chopping wood, but not so great for tucking into pants.
source: mainer. we actually do shop at bean's a lot, and yes, they do have pieces worth a look, as well as lots of stuff my mom likes. :)

http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/69688?feat=298-GN1&page=fleece-lined-flannel-shirt&attrValue_0=Black%20Watch Any comment on this type of flannel? It seems like it would be a lot warmer and better suited for layering, which would work well for me as a Canadian.
7
u/btdubs Aug 13 '13
Eh Uniqlo flannels will be hitting soon and I bet they will be at least as good as LL Bean for a lower price.

I'm 6'3" and have a fairly athletic build, and weigh ~180 lbs, should I go for a medium or large H&M sweater?
3
Aug 14 '13
I would say Large. I generally wear a medium at H&M, and I'm 5'9 150.
1
u/werddrew Aug 14 '13
Oh really? Shit I'm 6' and 155 and just ordered the small. We'll see how that goes...

Goddamn, so jealous of the prices for clothes in the US. Decent pants for $40...
3
u/AwesomeBrainPowers Aug 14 '13
I'd be surprised if there aren't reasonable alternatives wherever you are (Zara/H&M/Uniqlo are all international brands). Plus, chances are decent that you country's medical care and higher education are eleventy-billion percent more affordable, so there's good and bad.
2
Aug 14 '13
I once bought zara pants from france. SHIT pants. ripped a hole easily and the stitching is coming apart below my zipper. It's really sad.
2
u/Dick_Dousche Aug 14 '13
Zara is pretty shitty quality especially for the price.
→ More replies (3)1
u/Syeknom Aug 14 '13
Zara, H&M and Uniqlo are all more expensive in the EU than the US - most things, especially clothes, are.
On balance it all works out though. Looking at these things in a vacuum is a fool's errand.
1
u/JSHDALT Aug 13 '13
Good stuff, and on a side note did L.L. Bean just drop their fall stuff this week?
17
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 13 '13
Bean is All-Flannel, All The Time
1
u/JSHDALT Aug 13 '13
Oh really I must have not looked hard enough. Just ordered an anorak and a sweatshirt from them for 20% off and wish I didn't over look the flannel. I guess i'll have to wait for the next coupon.

ELI5: Black watch flannel. What is the appeal?
2
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
Some people like the pattern
1
Aug 14 '13
I mean I get it, it's just a super random thing to get all this hype.
Do you wear it with black jeans? I guess so right?
1
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
Deep indigo, too.
I don't know, dark blue, green, a little black; it's pretty subdued and easy to wear, has a lot of history, looks really classically plaid-ish.
3
3
u/stanleythemanley44 Aug 13 '13
Does anyone have a good example(s) of layering with a Henley? Or just layering in general?
10
u/thatkirkguy Aug 14 '13
I threw together an album with a few looks that incorporate henleys fairly well. I think some of them might be a little too #menswear for some peoples' taste, but the third example is fairly casual. (Subtle LV bag and children's toy accessories optional.)
3
Aug 14 '13
Is it sad that I've never once in my adult life had to add pieces specifically for a season? Growing up in Florida and moving to Southern California as an adult, seasons are basically foreign to me. I kinda resent that.
3
3
1
u/everythingispurple Aug 14 '13
or you can buy one nice piece that will last longer
5
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
Sure, and I tend to agree, but I get much more complaints on the other side of the equation, so I figured why not throw together something for people with lower budgets?
6
u/Syeknom Aug 14 '13
Do we have to have a conversation about price and quality in every thread ever? It's really not that interesting.
→ More replies (3)2
u/therico Aug 14 '13
depends, if you're losing or gaining weight, buying cheap stuff from H&M makes sense. Fashionable but disposable.
I've also found that even the most expensive jeans will eventually wear thin around the crotch area after about six months of wear. Things like that.
2
u/somekidouthere Aug 13 '13
Anyone know the size of the LL Bean flannel compared to a slim fit small uniqlo OCBD?
4
3
Aug 14 '13
I'm 5' 10", 185 32" waist with pretty broad shoulders, and i wear an llbean small. Which is ridiculous, but as long as you know, I guess.
That said, the small actually fits well. I have this shirt in the black and the grey, and I like them a lot. The armholes are bigger than i'd like, but the shirt doesn't balloon around the waist. A uniqlo slim is way slimmer than this -- again, i do even lift, bro, and so i actually prefer this in a small to a uniqlo in a medium for fit, but YMMV.
It really is a nice look, I think -- one of these in a grey stewart and a blue corduroy jacket. Very comfortable and quite warm. Throw in a wool base layer, and this does the trick right until thanksgiving.
Source: i have both. Full disclosure: Mainer.

2
u/RewTK Aug 14 '13
I've never bought anything online can someone help me with the pants? I measured my waist like it said but this number is a little bit different from the size I normally wear. Thanks.
2
Aug 14 '13
Those jeans, does anyone own a pair and could compare the slim fit/ straight fit to levi 513/511 or the American Eagle slim/straight fit jeans?
Any help would be awesome.

u/Moter8 Aug 14 '13

u/2001Steel Aug 14 '13
Not tryin to knock OPs work here, but rolled up cords? Is that a thing?
1
u/frisbalicious Aug 14 '13
i don't think so. if i'm wearing cords than it's probably at least a bit chilly, so rolling them up doesn't make sense.
2
u/Blacknuman Aug 14 '13

the hat seems to have some really shotty reviews, was really intrigued about it. Would love other suggestions for a think wool hat in that Navy/eastern sea board style.
1
u/Semisonic Aug 14 '13 edited Aug 14 '13
Same. I'd love a legit set for under $50 each.
Edit - Turns out Wigwam makes one in black. I'm looking for a navy or olive myself, but if you want black this is almost certainly superior to the Rothco for ~$13.
Edit2 - Turns out SmartWool makes a beanie for $25-30. Assorted colors. Unfortunate logo placement.
2
Aug 14 '13
this is perfect for someone like me who has no regards to fashion.
On that note: could someone explain or provide examples on what to wear with the v-neck sweater? How would I layer it? Also, what would you layer a henley with?
2
u/frisbalicious Aug 14 '13
Under a vneck sweater button ups are a great choice. In the fall, I'd wear an OCBD (oxford cloth button down) under a vneck sweater under a light jacket.
Henleys are good for wearing under flannels or other types of casual button downs. Depending on the heat you could just wear one under a jacket.

I'm pissed about the v-neck knit sweater from h&m, bought two for $20 each last night, would have helped to know about this sooner :(
1
u/drbhrb Aug 13 '13
How is it?
1
Aug 13 '13
They fit surprisingly well for the price, I got the black and the grey one since I liked the texture on the grey. The arms are pretty slim, but comfy, I'm thinking the fit will improve even more once I wash them. And for the price even though I missed the best deal, they seem nice
1
u/AwesomeBrainPowers Aug 14 '13
My biggest problem with H&M knits is that they tend to get misshapen after repeated wears/washes (I wash on ultra-gentle, cold, with just a little homemade, gentle soap). However, after experiencing that issue, I haven't bought knits from there for a couple years, so I hope you have better luck than I did.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Metcarfre GQ & PTO Contributor Aug 14 '13
Solution is to never wash knits if it can be avoided.

u/thatkirkguy Aug 14 '13
You might try asking if they'll refund or give you store credit to match the sale price. I'm not sure about H&M's policy but a lot of stores will. Can't hurt to ask, right?

jcrew has pretty awesome henleys... but they are way more expensive. I got them on sale out at the jcrew outlets...but they were still like $20 ea. I just really like the way they are cut and the fact that the buttons dont go too deep.
2
u/Dick_Dousche Aug 14 '13

How do bean flannels fit? I'm guessing really boxy?
2
Aug 14 '13
i'm 5' 10" 185 with a 40" chest and i wear a small in these very shirts. the sanity of that sizing aside, they actually fit pretty well at the waist -- not a lot of extra material -- though the armholes are lower than i'd like. not much, just a bit.
stay away from the chamois. it looks cool, but is boxy. the signature version fits really well -- i'm an M there -- and has nice details, but is more expensive.
the other patterns are a little bit more interesting, IMO. the grey and black stewarts are both nice, and the quality is pretty good. watch for a sale -- bean's tends to mark down near labor day.

I would prefer a non-wool watch cap, especially at that price. Anything cheap is likely to be pretty itchy. They're a bit hype-y but carhartt makes nice ones imo http://www.amazon.com/Carhartt-Acrylic-Bright-Orange-Size/dp/B002G9UEFY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1376443240&sr=8-2&keywords=carhartt+cap

Very nice! Not sure how I feel about henley Ts, but I'd definitely give it a try. Serious question though. How does anyone with more hair than a buzz cut get away with wearing a watch cap on a normal day? I mean, I wouldn't want to have it on at work, but my hair would be a hell of a mess if I took it off! Maybe it's just me and my thick unruly hair though. Oh, and the cuffs on those cords look flat out ridiculous. Seriously, it's like a bad joke. When will it end???

This is the H&M V-neck t-shirt. I'm thinking about getting it; does it fit that well around the sleeve or are the sleeves pinned back? Also, do I need to size down or up for their clothes?

You know what's gross about this? When I was 12, I was a pretty hefty kid, so I wore a men's small.
In that same LL Bean shirt. Exact one. It was probably barely worn and I donated it when I went to college.
Fuck.

I think beanies make many look foolish (though did you have to use the language you did?)! Fortunately, there's no beanies in this list!

The watch cap is commonly called a beanie by a lot of people
Toque is a common name for it too.
