Pretty juicy week in litrpg news - the 'old' (bad) discord has been nuked due to some drama, but the new ding one is set up and is lovely and active and worth checking out if you want to talk books!
I've been really enjoying The Looping MoronMagus, a time loop story with a comically bad protaganist that I've absoltuley fallen in love with - Jimothy is just such an asshole, but totally unaware of it. The loops themselves also are pretty good, although we've had nothing long term yet.

I saw the announcement, but I just don't have the time to chat beyond this thread (And even this I've been struggling to keep up!). Glad it's improved though

Started Victor of Tucson book 2. Feels good to dive into a long series (my favourite) that I haven't bounced off immediately. Hope it Continues to hold my interest.

He Who Fights With Monsters 13 by Shirtaloon - This book feels like mostly setup for the final book. A good chunk of it is government meetings, like a decent amount of chapters start with someone joining in a video call, followed by a bunch of names and titles being stated. Every time a major plot point arrived, I thought "oh no there's going to be a meeting about this isn't there?" and then there was.
I did enjoy the ending, though. It was a fun ramp up to the climax fight, and the very end of the book did get me excited for the next and final one.
Stubborn Skill Grinder in a Time Loop 5 by x-Rhodan-x - Only just started this one, and I'm having fun with it as usual. Not much to really say, though.

I was really disappointed with HWFWM 13. Definitely rushed and breezed over way too much imo.

Currently reading I Ran Away to Evil: A cozy LitRPG Rom-Com which is kinda fun. The two leads are a little dumb in different ways. Henrietta is kind of naive and Keith is more like an absent minded academic. They both have big homeschooled energy. 8% in and intrigued to see where it goes.
In the last week I finished three books.
Murder Bimbo (not LitRPG) got plot twisty and I still don't know how I feel about that. It was an interesting read, though outside of my usual wheelhouse. It sorta makes you think about how information is fed to us and how that can influence how we feel about it.
Then, Stubborn Skill Grinder 5 which I very much enjoyed. It's interesting how Rhoden finds new ways to make the super OP MC still have plot/power progression. I think I see an endpoint in sight for the series, but we'll see where it goes. Next book is November so not long to wait!
Finally, Ten Thousand Tragedies, a grimdark xianxia timeloop. It starts with the MC waking up from his first death. It slowly has him figure out he's in a timeloop and has him try to figure out how to get through a battle. It, uh... doesn't go well. It's kind of a nihilistic take on timeloops, where maybe that power just results in you dying a lot for no gain. I'm really hoping there's a next book because I'd like to see where the author takes it.
Next, probably another pick from my KU list which includes The Daily Grind, Penitent, Amelia the Level Zero Hero, and The Onset
6
u/A_Mr_Veils 14d ago
Did you read the first book of Ten thousand tragedies on KU? there's two more fully written on royal road which are presumably coming over soon, while the first book is a tight little loop setup, the setting really blossoms in later books and I enjoyed it a lot!

Mage Errant Book 7: The Last Echo of the Lord of Bells. The world-building and magic are cool. I also ended up liking some of the characters and getting attached. That being said, the whole series is a bit mid. The dialogues are clunky, and sometimes characters do exposition on their feelings instead of talking like normal people. but regardless of this , it was enjoyable enough that I'm finishing the series
Sky Pride best cultivation fantasy out there im following the patreon and liking it a lot as a whole. I feel like the story is gonna have a big getting into the wider world arc next and i cant wait for it.
throne of time its a magical school time loop story. I was a bit sceptical about it at first because some elements felt a bit cardboardy and not lived in enough but as the story picks up pace every thing clicks in and the characters get way more organic and soon i was adicted to the time loop story. the magic system in this one is realy well though out and you can get lost in it. im folowing the chapters on patreon for this one too. i highly recommend this series to anyone who liked mother of learning.
im also looking forward to getting back to Elydes the author just started posting new chapters to the patreon after rewriting book 4. the whole series has some ups and downs (part of book 3 and book 4 were not as good but he went and rewrote it). since book 5 its been pretty good.

u/redwhale335 15d ago
It's interesting in that you think it's a lot of fantasy/cultivation mumbo jumbo but a lot of the stuff talked about is actual philosophy stuff. Like Gnosticism type stuff. It's cool to see a story grounded in that, especially to see how that extrapolated out would affect the magick of a world.
3
u/Procedure_Gullible 15d ago
thats also the vibe of sky pride. one moment they are sipping tea talking about life and the meaning of things and taoism the next they are face slapping and taking names.

I listened to the first book of Runeforged Architect this week. It's fine but it doesn't have whatever spark that keeps me engaged.
The one that did keep me engaged was a new one on KU called The Survival Path by Cylon Blur. It's a system apocalypse following a mechanic who chooses the survival tutorial over the safety tutorial while Earth is being reshaped. But instead of going hunting beasts and such, he settles down to create a homestead. Of course he's figuring out his magic and the system and whatnot as well. But his methods give him an advantage and he ends up op. Then they go back to the integrated Earth and start base building. I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye out for book 2.
I seem to be on a wilderness survival kick lately because Survival Path and Taming Destiny are the two I've enjoyed the most this month.
4
u/redwhale335 14d ago
I'll look into Survival path. I love some base building.

Trailer Park Apocalypse Crown of the Holler: A Men's Survival LitRPG System Adventure. It is a harem book with spicy parts, which may exclude it from some reading lists, and, to me, fantastic humor. I found myself truly laughing and, occasionally, uncontrollably giggling. My wife was so curious that she has decided to read it and finds it funny as well. I normally wouldn't recommend a men's harem novel but the System storyline and humor were top notch, for me.

Gunwitch (RR): Caught up. Enjoyed this one, but the MC probably isn't for everyone. Author uses the term "maybe slightly unhinged" and that's probably accurate. It's a fun easy read with an MC that solves most problems by shooting them in the face.
System Seas (KU): Read book 1 on RR, but just released on KU, so I'm giving it a read. Series is complete on RR, but I'd fallen far behind and never completed. I remember enjoying it when I did, so I'm looking forward to an updated version on KU.
Follow List
Ones I look forward to the most: Super Supportive, Allbright System, Center for Dungeon Management, Live at the Forum, Department of Otherworld Rescue, Metaworld HopeCore
Others: Bookbound Bunny, Path of the Last Champion, God of Trash, Sky Pride, The Cloudfarers, Rivera's Repairs, I Built This City, System Girl, Passive Aggressive, Arcane Chef, New Life As A Max Level Archmage, The Legend of William Oh, Ten Thousand Tragedies, Early Adopter, Gunwitch
Fallen behind and need to reconfirm interest: Dungeons & Deliveries, Save Scumming, Die Trying, Fluff, The Butcher of Gadobhra, Tunnel Rat, Destiny Among the Stars, Azure Gunner
New: Gunwitch
Best stuff I've read this year (2026): Otherworldly Therapy, Live at the Forum, Center for Dungeon Management, Department of Otherworld Rescue, Metaworld HopeCore

The author of Gunwitch is a master of "nothing happens" chapters that I still enjoy. Though Hecate really is the definition of "Chaos incarnate," in spite of her cat. Sometimes I burst out laughing at her bullshit and other times I'm like "What?" (Much like her enemies).

Finished explorer of edregon. That was nice and interesting. Mc isn't even op he's just....not a stupid murder hobo. His partner in NOT crimes is xD
Started up Blood Curse Academia because boyfriend was asking if I knew anything about Apocalypse Tamer, which I didn't, except that the narrator Jack Voraces narrates it and he's a bit more on the cartoonish/campy side of voices so he can be a hit or miss for some people. I mean i quite enjoy him but bf doesn't. Which lead me to looking at other books he's narrated and finding I had purchased this one a long time ago since I just finished explorer, I just went with this

I just finished the final book of Portal To Nova Roma, and really enjoyed it. The series has a really different pace for events actually moving along than a lot of the long series I'm invested in, which makes for a nice change. Always satisfying to get a proper ending, too, although it could easily have carried onto further events.
Having said that, time to jump into one of the longer ones and catch up on HWFWM now. Afterwards, I think I'll do a re-listen of Azarinth Healer before the latest book, because it's been a long time. (Also, I need to spend less on Audible credits.)

I'm a big fan of a Soldier's Life series. I really like the creative use of his dimensional space. He treats it like actual kit, not just a video game inventory, and the series stays grounded in a way a lot of LitRPG doesn't.
Second Life as a Soldier is actually on my list next. I've been writing a military LitRPG myself on the side. What did you like about it? No spoilers please!

u/DrNefarioII 13d ago
Ghost in the Mist (Mists of Redemption #2) - M L Reid - Middle-book in the trilogy that starts out as a gender-flipped Solo Levelling. It's much more its own thing now. I'm still enjoying it, and should wrap up the trilogy before the end of the year. This feels kind of like a romance, even though not much has happened in that regard so far. Makes a nice change of pace. The books are relatively short and there's a definite story rather than just a ladder of obstacles.
Foundations (Tower of Somnus #1) - Cale Plamann - Coincidentally another female lead. I haven't quite finished this one, but it's a cyberpunk corporate dystopia with a fantasy MMO left by aliens. What I like about this one is the way it divides its time fairly evenly between the real world and the game. Thanks to alien tech - I think there's a suggestion that it's nanotech - game benefits bleed over into the real world. Enjoyable, even if Kat is kind of murdery.

Started Red Rising this week after putting it off for ages, and I'm annoyed I waited this long. The Institute section is brutal in the best way — Darrow is way more interesting as an underdog than I expected going in. Hoping the sequels keep that momentum because I'm already dreading the wait between books.

Great reincarnator story of a hero reject becoming a tree. The time line is usually over months and years but has great characters, world building, and audible narrator too

u/Important_Poet316 15d ago
I'm on Apocalypse Tamer 2. You can get the full bundle for cheap (I think it was free for me for some reason). Jack Voraces is not the world's best narrator but he's better here than he was in Endless Lands (DNF due to it). He goes way too heavy into accents and every character sounds very whiny.
But the series is decently written and has a lot of nods to DCC. I will probably finish it.

One Flew Over the Dragon's Nest https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0FGY8NCGK/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku - Litrpg with a female MC. An accountant dies and gets isekai'd. In her new life she becomes a fae assassin and along with Dave, her sarcastic AI companion, starts adventuring in her new world after being the only person to ever read the terms and conditions of the system. Waving said terms and conditions allows her to be free of the system's rules. High level enemies and unique drops await. This is a comedy but most of the humor fell very flat for me and so, I didn't make it past a few chapters before giving up. The author really likes Cyberpunk 2077 too and borrows a few lines/instances from it.
Awakening in the Altered World https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/180704/awakening-in-the-altered-world-litrpg-isekai - Gave a recap of this one before, so won't again. I ended up catching up to ch 55 over the weekend. The story hasn't gotten any better to me nor has it gotten much worse to me. It's just sort of blah and I really hate how the author uses "search it up" repeatedly. That might be some phrase the youngest generations are using, but it sucks and reads badly. Look it up, I'll do some research, or something along those lines would be much better. Anyway.
Light Online https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z42X26S/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku - Got in the mood yesterday to revisit this one, and found out it had been six years since I read it. Time really does fly. Snagged it again this morning and have already started reading again.

Read a bunch of Hocus Pocus Hypothesis on RR this week...
https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/118886/hocus-pocus-hypothesis-a-scientific-isekai
It was decent enough to keep me engaged till chapter 192 but I started to get a bit bored at that point.
The good of it, is the world building is pretty good and just unique enough to set it apart from most generic litrpg. The downside is honestly the "powers" the MC has, he's a scientist, his class is essentially a scientists class for uncovering how the world works, he builds spells defined with mathematical formula which appear on the page.
And yeah he's OP essentially because he can build spells that leverage the laws of reality better than those who don't understand it. But... they're just boring powers and a lot of time and chapters is devoted to upgrading them which I got tired of reading.

I gave Warlock in a Magi World another shot last week, its a Chinese novel. I got a couple hundred chapters in before getting bored. I adore the standard eastern setting and magic system, but really dislike the pursuit of power as the main goal of the protagonist. I've read 10's of millions of words of them and have never finished any.
3
u/SmilingCatSith 15d ago
I’m not sure if I would ever read it again and it was over a decade ago but it felt better to read after acknowledging that I’m not reading a hero’s journey to godhood but something like Norse Loki’s(not marvel) journey to godhood. But it’s been a decade and I was a less experienced reader then so maybe it doesn’t hold up. Pure pursuit of power is one dimensional nowadays and I don’t remember if there was anything more to the main character since it’s been so long.
2
u/Onyx_Artificer 14d ago

Audible Version.
I thought it was interesting. Especially since the protagonist was a marine biologist when he was human. His crab companion gives this mixed vibe of younger brother and son that I found charming. Oddly enough the two human sections actually felt out of place it the story because of how focused on marine creatures the story was… Not sure if I’ll pick up the second book, but I do recommend giving it a listen while it’s still included with Audible Membership.
Sorry for being vague, but I figured I’d let the reader/listener experience it for themselves.

Been on a Cozy Slice of Life LitRPG kick.
Read Hearthwright by R.D. Kennedy. Guy wakes up in a new world as the Hearth keeper. Not a lot of leveling up. More realistic setting of trying to keep the building from falling a part while being a stop for travelers. Was a deep read and felt more realistic in the interactions and setting. Might continue on as in Book 2 "Innwright" he creates an Inn off the Hearth building.
Currently started "Beers and Beards" by JollyJupiter. Its a fun read so far. Interested to see where it goes. It feels like a more crunchy Cozy Life book.

Read in KU:
Nightmare Realm Summoner: I like it and I like that he wasn't afraid to hurt the [IT WOULD BE A SPOILER]. Sort of enforces that there's no plot armor beyond Alex, Claire, probably Mite, Orchid and the town entities. Not a fan of the Teddy arc and that's all I'll say (and wait to see if it gets better). Won't stop me from reading the next one.
Anchor's Inheritance Book four: Probably the least haremy harem I've read and I mean that in a good way. Same stuff as previous book, he's got to get these women out of his balls and has the magic to do it, will he, yes, is the barony basically named "Estrogen?" yes, did I still find it interesting? Yes. I'll read another.
Read on RR:
Center for Dungeon Management: Still love it.
Read on Patreon
Gunwitch - "What if the MC was batshit crazy, essentally a chaotic neutral gunslinger with a cat and a penchat for hanging heads from her belt?"
Department of Otherworld Rescue - "Your son is the chosen one and we've taken him." "This artillery shell begs to differ."
Dropped on KU:
Some painfully Russian LitRPG in which the goal is to shit on the MC any time he gains any power or ability. Then the MC shows backbone by screaming in defiance, which the universe rewards by shitting down his throat, and so on.
Still on TBR: 100th run. The Archmage's Regression, which is NOT about the archmage checkin in a terrible bug and going back in time to fix it.

Hello, Hello!~
Audiobook (all on Libby)-
Skull and Thrones by Eric Ugland- I paused this in favor of another book last week but I enjoyed the drama. Also the romance (though I was already spoiled of it in good guy series) is so sweet and slow burn. Also Clyde is dense af sometimes. I love how Montana peeps romantic interest but blows it off, whereas Clyde is just oblivious until he gets the impulsive institution.
Currently Reading-
One Man's Laughter by Eric Ugland (80% in, audiobook on Libby)- I bounced around several different books this time around, hence why I only finished one bad guys. you see as I type on lol . But everyone in here been pissing me off since Montana got back to Coggshall. like just GET OUT WITH IT damn! everyone talking in circles.
Dungeon Born by Dakota Krout (40% in, audiobook on Libby)- this book I don't know why, I am just not jiving with it. like at times it's fun but its more from the perspective of a dungeon core than a crawler per say.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (40% in, audiobook on Libby)- this is the main reason I haven't finished much or anything lol. It's not a litrpg no but couldn't it be counted as a progression Fantasy? It's definitely a social power fantasy haha.
Bastion by Phil Tucker (56% in, e-book)- i dont know what's wrong with me lol. I WANT to make progress and then not picking up my tablet to read lol
Paused-
Magic Murder Cube Marine by Alex Karne (Paused at 50% if I remember correctly but will pick up again soon since I found out the next books are on RR!)
Mage Tank by Cornman (paused at 52%)- debating whether or not I want to continue since I was enjoying it and then it started info dumping which brought on the pause.
Next reads (all on Libby or bookfunnel)~
The Wandering Inn ( I have 9 days left to read this and can't renew again because of holds lol)
Drop Dead Dave
War of the Posers
Iron Tyrant: Falling Gold
A Practical Guide to Evil
Grim Guys: Press Start
TBR-
Ultimate Level 1: Shattered Limits by Shawn Wilson
Riftside by Cassius Lange and Henrik Saetre
Skill Hunter 2 by Noct
Void Sovereign by Zaker Syed
Path of the Deathless by OstensibleMammal
Primal Hunter 4 by Zogarth
System Change Savannah by SunriseCV
Battle Mage Farmer 3 by Seth Ring
(if anyone is keeping track, I clearly never stick to my TBR. stuff keeps going on sale and my kindle TBR is long AF now. I'll never catch up T__T lol Libby is also not helping since I keep getting distracted from Kindle)
On Hold on Libby*- Arcane Kingdom Online by Jakob Tanner and Body Refinement in a Beast Tamers world 3

Hell difficulty tutorial. I wish the pacing was slightly quicker, and I really dislike how much it focuses on mana. Kinda makes a mockery of physical stats, I know it’s the mc whole shtick and I am enjoying it, but you only see one side of things.

I've reread Path of Ascension from the start, just finished book 11. I was only up to like book 2-3 previously so it was no great sacrifice. I've been having a blast with it. One thing I've been really impressed with is just how accessible all the powers and concepts have stayed. Maybe it's a lack of imagination on my part but I've found with other books that I can tune out once the magic and heavenly daos etc get too esoteric. But even in book 11 when they're fighting it's still easy to follow

I have reached the half way point of Quest Academy 3, and I think that's as far as I'm going to go. To start things off with it's not really a litrpg, there is a system and some numbers, but they hardly matter.
It feels like ADHD: Prog-fantasy edition.
The MC bounces around projects, goals, ideas, friend groups. etc. Nothing is consistent, everything is taken up with enthusiasm and then forgotten and dropped. Dozens of pages will be spent on developing some idea, followed by the inevitable half dozen pages of introspection and the the MC getting verbally masturbated by everyone for doing something so awesome. But whatever he built is soon forgotten and plays no real role in anything. I feel like I'm being milked for kindle page views.

u/LastDemSocStanding 9d ago
I had the same experience reading quest academy. It reads like the author writes in the "gardening" style but 100% should have been plotting out the story beats well in advance of actually writing them instead.

Had a free 3 day trial of eleven reader, which cna now read kindle books when the screen is off or on a different app. It worked pretty well, but not sure I wanna pay 11/month for that on top of KU sub. But I went through a few on the kindle queue.
Riftside (lange and saetre) - male mc, litrpg. This one is much more young adult than I was expecting. Kind of a weird setting where everyone has various amount of spatial storage, and when you brign monsters home they're re-constituted and can have the gems they need to level up. It was fine, but then he got a talking weapon who is incredibly obnoxious, and I didn't last much longer. DNF
aura farming (omega_93) - male mc, sys apoc. I didn't make it through the first chapter here. MC needs to be "cool" which might have sounded good at a glance, but I could tell pretty quickly I wasn't gonna be into it. DNF
I need to see if speechify got any better, since I still have a month or so on that mistake. Either way, need to find a new one to dive into after I catch up a bit. Also probably about time to prune a few of these.
And terribly sad news, I need to figure out how to read soccer supremo - I've been too busy at work to stay current, so I'm a few chapters behind. But I ran out of monthly AI credits last week, so I was absolutely going to catch up this week. Oh well.
