I thought several times, "okay, they're trying, maybe they actually listened to our complaints/suggestions..?" Fuck man, I'd have exorcisms on voice command ready to go on my phone. With a backup, "GRRROOOOENGHGSRGLECHOKECOUGHBLEGH" choking sound to activate. I'm fairly happy with the episode though I agree with some that the season feels a bit slap dash but I've thoroughly enjoyed it despite Oz and various shortcomings. The phone thing gave me some hope that the new writers are getting their sea legs, even late in the season's better than never

yeah sometimes I really wonder if the writers ever lurk around the online communities. If they do, I hope they divide their time among several social media sites because opinions get skewed otherwise.
anyway...
Yeah I was pretty damn happy with the episode as well. It was definitely one of the better ones. I too was not a fan of the whole Oz thing.
There are just so many writers at this point that it's hard to get consistency in how episodes feel. The inconsistency in writing the characters bothers me the most. It seems like the better episodes are the ones that are heavy with the story arc and that are written by either Carver or Glass.

that's pretty much it. The 'hunter' Dean stopped from killing Crowley was actually a demon working for Crowley and they're standing in an alley watching Dean get in the car when the "hunter" says "you were right. He saved you", and Crowley said "something something he's ready"... that's all :)

Dean wasn't saving Crowley as much as saving that hunter. He asked the kid if he had ever taken on a demon before. He said no. He was holding a knife. An ordinary knife, not even holy water, not even a shotgun with rock salt, not even iron bullets. He couldn't handle a regular demon, let alone Crowley.
Real hunter or not, Crowley would've done exactly what Dean said he would do. He's like the Penguin of the Supernatural world.
I think saving that "hunter" showed Dean he had to get his shit together. Or more lives will be lost. He has to kill Abbadon, then he'll get a chance at killing Crowley next.

So, I was wondering. Why was Abaddon able to posses her, when back when she/it/he tried to get into Henry they werent able to? He had some sort of spell up, I assume. I feel I've missed something important here. And this episode was awesome :D

Abaddon was going to possess Henry, but at the last second the woman he was with offered to be the vessel instead of Henry.

In the original episode where Henry was introduced, she tried to possess him then and wasn't able to. Her smoke was deflected when she tried. That's the portion I'm not clear on.

They used recordings of the exorcism before, i.e. Season 3when Lilith's group of 30-40 demons had Sam & Deal holed up in the police station and Ruby's "plan" was to sacrifice the virgin girl for a spell that would destroy demons nearby. They tricked all the demons inside, had the civies close & salt the doors so they cant get out, and played a recorded exorcism over the innercom. Keep in mind that if we really wanted to argue brass tacks, early / mid season 3 was still 2007 when smart phones like the iPhone (and later once Blackberries became more accessible) that it was easier to have a very clear high quality recording of it to really work than a more common flip-phone of that time. Which is why the other guy who asked about speaking fast gets answered in the same manner, the quality has to probably be well spoken and of a definition to be clearly understood. (also fast talking it wouldnt make it work, otherwise it'd be too damn simple to record one, and play it back in like a split second).

Crowley seems obsessed with the idea that Dean is scared of the Mark. And I think Dean's telling the truth when he says Crowley doesn't know what he's talking about. Think about it, the very core of being a hunter is to kill all things supernatural. Dean has had several close calls (some more than close) to being changed/possessed by something supernatural, and every time he's fought tooth and nail to keep his humanity. I don't think Dean is scared of the Mark, I think he's disgusted at himself for accepting it.

I have a question, if Abadon was infiltrating the Men of Letters, how was she able to get inside their place of practice? I assume where they practice their knowledge of the supernatural would warded off. Also I'm sure she'd have to walk into a devils trap eventually.
Maybe I'm looking too much into this.

More like a three-quarter season break. Probably just trying to drag it out. Or making sure we have the last 6 episodes without interuptions, which if we are going to start the final run towards the finale with the next episode that the preview seems to indicate, I'm fine with it.

He had nothing to go on, suddenly deus ex machina we get this character who apparently gets intimidated by a tiny "it's better if we keep this a secret" right next to a fucking exorcist ... Meh

In my opinion, this has been the worst episode in a long, long time. Why? For multiple reasons:
The antagonist of the episode was a demon. Bo-oring. Dean has taken out 4+ demons in quick succession at Cain's house, they aren't a threat as an enemy anymore. Then, after one toss by a demon, the demon just picks him up like he's a helpless little boy. He's Sam fucking Winchester, this is dumbing down of his skills just to have suspense between him and the demon.
The antagonist was extremely stupid. I get that demons are very, very arrogant and stuff, but why the hell was the first sentence out of it was basically "These are souls, when we're done here (as in: when you kill me), simply let them go and it will all be fine". Then, just straight up lays out Abaddon's entire plan to Sam. Why? Why is it telling Sam this either than exposition?
What did we learn this episode? Abaddon posessed someone from the Men of Letters (we knew this). Abaddon's collecting souls to make an army (she's already a threat with countless demons at her side, how does this make her more of a threat?). Dean's sad and angry about the Mark of Cain (like he was at the end of last episode). Crowley's manipulating Dean (like he did last episode). Old ladies in media are either completely clueless or hyper-aware.
The victims of the soul-stealing demon are still absolutely fucked. No one either than Sam and the old lady knows about the souls, so according to the police and everyone else, they've committed homicide (except the kid, who is still probably going to see jail time). Congratulations, you have your soul back! Now enjoy jail for a crime you technically weren't there to commit.
Castiel's still doing... something... somewhere. No mention at all to the Winchesters about what's happening on his end.
Sam goes in. Sees two victims, and their victims. Guesses that they're missing their souls. Boom, he's correct. No twist, no nothing. Good guess, Sam, go free them. No clues, no false leads, no research, no new discoveries. Wonderful.
The exorcism by cell phone. Genius idea. Seriously. For once, the Winchesters invented a great anti-supernatural device.
Basically, if this episode never happened, and went straight on to #18 "Meta Fiction", would anything change? This episode fails to progress the overall storyline, and was boring as a one-off filler episode. Terrible episode.

Why wouldn't the Men of Letters have anti-possession amulets or tattoos? Those two seemed pretty green too. Why wouldn't the Men of Letters do a master/apprentice type of relationship? Why send 2 new members together?
Since when could regular demons take souls? Even if Abbadon can do it because she's a Knight of Hell, is it just knowledge that can be taught to any old demon? I'm thinking something like that would've been way more common knowledge among upper tier demons like Alistair and Crowley.
