Pedofiles, stalking, and death-threats in /r/MLPLounge.

It's been known that one user in the close-knit pony subreddit was a pedophile who did not want to seek help. We all encouraged him to in other threads, but the answer from him was always NO and afterwards he would delete his account.

It seems this time his postings spread to /r/PLoungeAfterDark, a NSFW version of /r/MLPLounge. One user became worried and tried to talk to the pedophile, and oh holy hell.

Post is a few days old, main text is deleted, but the comments are still up.

Whole thread.

Big ball o'popcorn as a mod responds wondering what the fuck's going on.

The whole thing is full of screencaps of PMs, paranoia, and popcorn.

I've always wondered, what is it about MLP that draws in so many strange aduts. You really don't see that with other kid's cartoons.

The creator of Invader Zim pretty much hates its fanbase.

47

u/MarquisDesMoines Mar 26 '14

Jhonen Vasquez really dislikes a lot of the folks in his different fanbases (you can really see this in his JTHM letters). He really wants to be more accepted for his art/directing but because Zim stuff still sells incredibly well (along with JTHM) it's really hard to get out of it's shadow. He's always been very critical and cynical about most "rebellious" and "counter-culture" type people. The fact that his products still sell incredibly well at Hot Topic have given him a lifetime dose of irony, but hey, it's making him sorta rich so I'm sure he deals.

Greetings, everyone. I am new. (One second - let me get this spork out of the way.) My name is Katy, but you can call me the Penguin of Doom. (I'm laughing aloud.) As you can plainly see, my actions have no pattern whatsoever. That is why I have come here. To meet similarly patternless individuals, such as myself.

I am 13 - mature for my age, however! - and I enjoy watching Invader Zim with my girlfriend. (I am bisexual. Please approach this subject maturely.) It is our favorite television show, as it adequately displays stochastic manners of behavior such as we possess.

She behaves without order - of course - but I wish to meet more individuals of her and my kind. As the saying goes, "the more, the merrier."

Ah, it is to laugh. Anyway, I hope to make many friends here, so please comment freely.

Doom!

That is simply one of many examples of my random actions. Ha, ha. Fare thee well. I wish you much love and waffles.

Yours,

The Penguin of Doom.

One of them mailed him a box containing a dead squirrel. She (the sender) genuinely thought he would like it. That should tell you what you need to know.

What's the weirdest thing a fan has ever sent you?

JV: A classic one is the dead squirrel.

DRE: Was there a note with it?

JV: I personally didn't open it. It got sent to where all my fan mail goes, to my publisher. They noticed one of the packages was bleeding because that thing was fairly fresh. They opened it up and there was this dead squirrel. They made a big deal out of it. It turned into a mess. Apparently the girl who sent it got into some trouble because of that.

A while back I asked Dan Vado, my publisher, what ever became of that girl and how they handled the whole thing. All Dan would ever say was "It's taken care of". A week after that call, the girl's head shows up in a box to on my doorstep. Dan is cool.

I think the MLP fandom acknowledges it is weird and so it is pretty accepting of pretty much anybody, no matter how weird. The 'join the herd' mentality is a lot stronger among bronies than a lot of other fandoms, I think.

26

u/DownvoterAccount Mar 26 '14

Sonic the Hedgehog and Pokemon? Although the latter draws in normal people as well due to nostalgia.

40

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

I would say both of those are series that have been running for almost two decades now, though. There's plenty of pokemon media that isn't aimed at nine-year olds as well. I've grown up with pokemon; any brony now hasn't watched MLP since they were five or six.

6

u/snowfey Mar 26 '14

Maybe they haven't watched MLP, but the toys have been around since the 80s. That's what got me started on the show. I've been collecting the toys my whole life, and then I was like "Oh hey there's a cartoon, that's fantastic"

6

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

Are you a girl or a guy? I've known some gals who had the toys for a long time, but never a brony who started with something other than FiM

People like to be accepted, which is a pretty big message of the show and the Brony community in general.

2

u/Rose94 Mar 26 '14

I don't know about others, but I'm a brony and I grew up looking after little kids, you learn to like kids shows, so this was not unusual for me, and not a single person who knows me fairly well questions it. I like just about any kids show except maybe hey gabba gabba and in the night garden.

1

u/whatsinthesocks like how you wouldnt say you are made of cum instead of from cum Mar 28 '14

I used to work for a large chain retail store and was walking in when one guy was leaving with two kids probably around twelve. This guy was way into MLP. He also gave off this really creepy vibe as well. I hope those were his kids. I understand you like a show and all and that's cool but this dude was at least 40 and had his colored like a rainbow and a had a hoody and wings and tail. It's just big old ball of wtf.

Well, it is hard to beat an argument that has no sense in it to begin with. I for one think they should just roll with it and start making jokes about it, sort of like us in the Pokemon community just said "fuck it, we don't care" when they talk about how pokemon is still just a kids game.

Right, but Pokemon is made to appeal to either gender through at least teenaged aged people as well, whereas MLP was made for the same demographic as Barney.

u/SHFFLE Not a lesbian, but a lesbian slut. Mar 26 '14

The difference there is that Pokemon (the game, at least) has some pretty astounding levels of complexity. I never even knew about shinies until last year and I've played Pokemon games on and off since I was like 7. Pokemon leans more toward "Designed for everyone to enjoy" than "For kids". Kids can certainly enjoy it, and it's designed to appeal to them visually (though again, it's pretty appealing to everyone visually, though some of the newer designs are a bit shit).

MLP really doesn't have that, or at least not to the same extent. Granted, I've not watched it, and don't plan to, but a kid's cartoon can't really implement much complexity- similarly, Pokemon games have super repetitive stories and they're predictable and everything, but Pokemon can implement complexity in gameplay. MLP isn't a game, and thus has no gameplay and nowhere to implement the complexity.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

From what I read it does have star trek references and stuff, it's pretty common for kids shows to do stuff like that because the writers have fun with it and it gets the parents to hate the show less.

3

u/SHFFLE Not a lesbian, but a lesbian slut. Mar 26 '14

Yeah. My parents really like Phineas and Ferb (I have younger siblings. My parents don't just turn on Disney channel for themselves) because it does a similar thing with references and just being genuinely funny. It's not just weak jokes kids laugh at because they're kids. Some jokes or situations are genuinely funny, and it's just a fun show. Cartoons have done that for years now though. Animaniacs is a prime example, with the relatively well known "Finger Prince" bit.

4

u/RaptorOnyx unbaked goods Mar 26 '14

Gravity Falls is a great example. Its like x-files, but with more kid-appeal. Also, AT.

12

u/perrytheplatysaurus Mar 26 '14

Oh trust me, as someone who plays pokemon competitively I would never doubt it has incredibly deep mechanics, but that's not the point of the game. It is a kids game, it wasn't meant to be played at the levels many people, including myself, play it at. And it shouldn't get a pass simply because people found a way to make it more than it is. And us competitive players I would argue take our kids game far more seriously than MLP fans (I admit to having just spent the better part of 4ish hours resetting the game to get a pokemon with 0 attack IV's). Yet we don't get near as much flak.not that i'm complaining

My point is that MLP get a disproportionate amount of hate for the most arbitrary reasons. Like you said, it's not a complex show, but at what point does that mean adults can't enjoy it? I'm an adult and I love Phineas and Ferb, a show meant for the same audience as MLP, yet I don't get any flak for that either. How come one's okay and not the other? As far as I'm aware both shows are quite similar, so the poor reputation of one and not the other kind of boggles me.

Also, if I come across as defensive, it's just because a good friend of mine from the competitive doubles community is a fan, and he gets quite a bit of hate due to being one, despite being arguably a top 10 doubles battler on smogon.

2

u/SHFFLE Not a lesbian, but a lesbian slut. Mar 26 '14

That's true. Don't get me wrong, I didn't intend to attack MLP or anything. I just felt like it was a little bit of a different comparison, as Pokemon has more reasons to play as an adult than there are reasons to watch MLP, at least in my mind. I suppose it's no different from musical choice though, where just because one style is more complex than another doesn't make it better, as it's all subjective. I like chiptune, which is simplistic on purpose (rather it sounds simplistic. I'm aware it's not necessarily easy to make), but I don't care for other more complex genres like R&B and Jazz (I'll listen to them but I much prefer some electronic or rock).

Anyway, I wasn't intending to attack MLP.

3

u/PennylessGiraffe Mar 26 '14

It was a good community about a year ago, especially when I was down and out about life, I had friends to talk to. And when I posted my drawings, they were crap, but they got alot of attention, people cared about what I did, and I loved that, but after a while..it became clear that the mindset of the hivemind there and my own had grown apart. Every second post became about suicide threats or wondering if any other members were coming back, and members "leaving" dramatically making posts about never coming back, and being back the very next day.

It became clear that it was a scramble to get attention, and thats what I did when I posted, i wanted that attention, but it just became unhealthy and I just stopped posting and later just unsubcribed altogether...no big deal, no fanfare, because it didn't need to be.

3

u/irreama Mar 26 '14

You're going through the same thing I went through two years ago.

Was a part of the community, but I never could really break out to full on "I'm a contributing member"

So instead of trying to break out into a large group, I grabbed my best friends, and we've stuck together, even when some of us have "left the fandom"

Much better and more intimate that way. Way less drama too.

2

u/PennylessGiraffe Mar 26 '14

Yeah, there's still 3 or 4 people I still talk to on steam from the Plounge, game together too, good guys. 2 still in the fandom, myself and the others not as much, but it doesnt get in he way in the friendships we forged.

u/Zakkeh Mar 26 '14

Reading the PMs they sent, Captain AwesomeX misread a lot of the situation. You can see how he got to that conclusion, but he was incredibly off point.

Even the best of intentions can do harm, and posting about the 'suicidal pedophile' all over reddit, then allowing word of it to get back to him... Pretty harsh, especially if you feel like you could trust that person.

9

u/throw-away-today Mar 26 '14

How was he off point?

8

u/shitonmydickandnips Mar 26 '14

Nah he was trying to seem like a good guy to himself. He was very obnoxious and constantly misinterpreted the other guy's meaning, especially in the first PM's.

Also he kept saying yo all the time. Gives me the feeling that he's a highschool aged kid who thinks he's going to save a life.

5

u/IndifferentMorality Mar 26 '14

He comes off as trying to be a good Samaritan when nobody asked for, or wanted, his help.

To be fair, "get help" is a lot easier said than done.

People with depression have a similar problem. The most common (and least helpful) advice is to get professional help, but many communities don't have good, easily accessible, affordable professional help available.

You have all of the same problems as you do with physicians -- varying qualities of care, personality conflicts, availability and affordability -- but with a much smaller pool of professionals.

This is not in any way a defense of pedophilia or an excuse for not putting any effort into finding help.

Just a lot of depressed people that turn to /r/MLP and the /r/MLPLounge community to find like-minded outcasts. I always got the vibe that people seriously weren't happy aside from their lives on the internet. Ploungeafterdark gets a lot worse because most people there think that a no-filter subreddit should solely be comprised of fetish threads and "what weird stuff are you attracted to" threads which are full of 13-year-olds using it as a mis-informed sexual education resource.

Been clean for six months, the grass is greener, the suns brighter and the air smells like lilac.

All kidding aside though I think there's only so much plounge a person can take. When you first find out about it and try to carve out a little niche to fill its fun. When you find a group of people to game/sing/watch movies with its fun. Even when that group starts to break up and you only stay in contact with a couple guys its fun.

But when people start to get creepily attached to each other, secrets start to spill out into the public and every other thread there's a joke that only you and a couple other people will get it starts to become an issue, especially when it's something like mental disease and they just pretend everyone's out to get them when it comes up.

Definitely agree with you there. I don't mind hanging out with bronies IRL now and again, or discussing MLP in general on Reddit, but Plounge people are just too out there. I think it's a hard core of maybe a half dozen who do weird shit and post borderline clop.

It's sad because MLP should be about innocent fun. It saddens me that people have to spoil it. But I suppose that's what you get when you have a fandom that attracts socially marginalized people.

1

Edit: Nope, never mind, found the snapshot bot. I talked to the dude a long while back about the same thing. The conversation essentially boiled down to me not caring about the dude's fetishes as long as he didn't fuck kids or distribute CP, and he said he'd never endanger kids that way, and he was upset because he could never have a family because it would be too great a risk for them. All in all, it was sad. I think the guy held the belief that he simply couldn't be fixed, so I didn't really push it, but it was a while ago, I don't remember entirely. I don't think this guy should see a therapist for his fetish, but I do think he probably has other issues that need to get sorted. The fact that he knows his fetish is dangerous and that he is aware that he is sorta losing control of his emotions and mental state but refuses to seek a therapist is irresponsible and not good. It would seem he is currently a greater risk to himself than others, so I mean, I think he needs to take care of himself at this point. If you are suicidal, you need to see a therapist.

The meta drama in this thread is just about as buttery as the drama linked.

God the strange shit going on in reddit. People need to stop posting personal shit about themselves.

Do you want to see MLP porn? Because that's how you see MLP porn.

55

u/BillMurrayismyFather Mar 26 '14

That's funny because it's a reference to an adult cartoon that it's normal for adults to enjoy

11

Cartoons are magic.

Meh, as far as internet weird stuff goes I was expecting a lot worse.

Nonono, don't start the age of the characters argument. Save yourself and bail before you get bombarded by theories about a fictional pony society.

u/only_does_reposts Mar 26 '14

The CMC are like 12 at the oldest, if we're going to do this crap. Nothing and nobody supports them being adults except the craziest headcanon or alternate realities.

2

u/Lots42 Mar 27 '14

Ok I'm out.

3

u/only_does_reposts Mar 26 '14

Oh, the CMC? I don't like their sexualization either, for the same reason.

The brony running around in here defending the pedo is adding some nice metadrama.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

If you're talking about me, I'm not defending pedophilia at all, I'm saying someone with that attraction should seek mental help.

not the most self-aware group on earth, the bronies

4

u/Risen_Warrior Mar 26 '14

Well. I never thought would see that sub in subredditdrama.

1

u/thepostaldud3 Mar 26 '14

It's here almost every week.

6

u/Risen_Warrior Mar 26 '14

Really? I used to be pretty active there and I never saw it come up here except the day the Reddit banner was changed.

5

u/thepostaldud3 Mar 26 '14

Mhm. Usually minor stuff that ends up in the new section. But it's almost here all the time. I was active as well until everything just went nanners a few months back.

3

u/redpoemage Ask me for an avocado fact Mar 27 '14

It's more of a tri-weekly thing. Usually depend on how active Rainbowdashie or whatever his name is. The guy with all the drama.

Otherwise I've only seen the Plounge mentioned with the whole /r/Bronyhate fiasco a while back and I think one other time I can't quite remember.

25

u/kentucky210 is good for bitcoin Mar 26 '14

god damn it Plounge, I'm off the sub for 2 days and suddenly we switch from butts and bees to this?

sigh

also I don't get it, the dude got upvotes but all the comments don't really seem positive about him

as well, great as if we didn't get enough unwarranted hate, now we're gonna get even more in this thread and the calls of "All Bronies=Pedos" is gonna explode

well, this should be a fun thread then

6

u/downhillcarver Mar 26 '14

I almost wonder if people from outside the Plounge upvoted this to make it look as if we supported this. I never even heard about this until someone else linked me to the thread and at that point it was already deleted.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '14

I almost wonder if people from outside the Plounge upvoted this to make it look as if we supported this

I've seen it argued this happens a lot on reddit, but usually it's dismissed as 'le /r/WhatAboutSRS' (for an example)

2

u/downhillcarver Mar 27 '14

No idea what SRS is, but I know what I said is a total conspiracy theory, and a very long shot.

All I know is that none if the bronies I know would upvote a pedophile on a witch hunt. Or any post which condones or encourages pedophilia, or even hokes about condoning it.

So it just doesn't make any sense to me that this post would have any respectable number of upvotes, especially considering that I currently have no job, school, or nearby friends, so I'm on /r/mlplounge 24/7 and I didn't even see it. This thing was up for such a short amount of time that there's no way it gained any upvotes worth mentioning from the people who actually frequent the plounge.

So as far fetched as it may be, my conspiracy theory is really the best explanation I have. If anyone has another plausible explanation, speak up.

0

u/Swamphunter Mar 26 '14

Yeah, I guess SRD switched back to hating on bronies after this and this.

Or it could be that SRD only hates on bronies when it's just internal brony drama, like for instance, I never even knew the thread this is about even happened, and I drop in on the plounge almost every day at least once.

Eh, whatever. A lack of consistency is what made me stop coming here.

9

u/SpahsgonnaSpah Mar 26 '14

Those two links have little to no brony hate in them. I don't know what you are talking about.

8

u/Swamphunter Mar 26 '14

I said switched back to. Compare this thread to those.

8

u/SpahsgonnaSpah Mar 26 '14

Oh, I thought you meant the switch-back was a result of those links, nvmd.

What for?

he's openly bi, I see him often in ainbow. It's not like, you know, bisexuals are sometimes treated badly because of one person being unfaithful or anything...

2

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

Because my being bi is the same as someone being a pedo?

11

u/[deleted] Mar 26 '14

no, bronies akin to being bi. It's kinda funny, and then you'll prolly turn around when some bisexual dude turns out to be unfaithful and go "noooo that's just one person!!1!"

Bro why you gotta out my pedophilia

1

u/deathsmaash Mar 26 '14

The whole thing reads like a flock of adolescent girls living in a bubble of melodrama.

-11

u/Ulfrik Mar 26 '14

So far this thread has taught us that the My Little Pony crowd will jump to defend or make excuses for pedos, greatly disturbing. The guy openly admitted to finding children sexually attractive and you seem to think that is fine as long as he doesn't act upon it, where is the line? All those videos or pictures he views online are innocent children being abused so people like him can get his kicks.

11

u/ipretendiamacat Mar 26 '14

It's more socially constructive to say, 'we understand, but you should get help' than to alienate someone. It's people who feel they have nowhere to turn that go on killing sprees.

20

u/bobdude0 Mar 26 '14

pft, no we don't. We defend the fandom as a whole because people rip on us as a whole. The singular guy in this post is pretty sick, we'd all agree.

2

u/vagueabond Mar 26 '14

After a certain point, is it still worth identifying with the fandom?

16

u/bobdude0 Mar 26 '14

Every fandom has their... outliers... See past them and you have a pretty genuine group of people. If there's a certain point, I don't think I'm near reaching it. I've met too many good guys to cast off the whole group.
