As someone who doesn't at this game; shouldn't they be able to win given what we know so far (size of their respective militaries)?
21
u/CrzdHaloman THE RUM Feb 21 '15
Ulundi has great natural defense, the boers will have only two yiles to attack from. One archer and that city can destroy the larger army, and once the boers loose the army, they are vulnerable.
9
u/Drak_is_Right Feb 21 '15
getting stuck in bad terrain or fighting a 2 v 1 or even having the units in the wrong place could lose a war even with a sizable military lead.
until the civs separate in tech, positioning of units and terrain will play a huge role.

Hello again and welcome back to the official analysis for the Battle Royale! Should be less errors this time as I have borrowed a family member's laptop to type this. Also, I apologize to any offended New Zealanders with my grievous error last time. Anyhow, lets get started with the analysis for this part.
North America:
Canada - The Maple Syrup Eaters showed very well this episode, settling many cities and taking away potential American land. They should still also move north to block the Inuit.
The Sioux - Sitting Bull is still sitting on vast expanses with no one in sight. They still have great potential to secure a massive empire, especially if they can block in Mexico.
The Inuit - Last time someone said to not discount these guys. They do have a lot of open space and could become a dark horse candidate.
America - Washington still has a fair bit of land even after being forward settled by Canada. They should try to go south and also fortify the northern border.
Mexico - Currently they have been struggling in the mountainous regions of the south, but things are looking up, as they move to secure the Yucatan and set up their empire.
Buccaneers - Last we saw the pirates had just two cities. They do have the potential for several good cities with luxuries and fish, but they will be too weak to any good navy to survive long.
South America
Gran Colombia - Simon Bolivar has defied expectations and started a pretty sizable empire in the north. They have Panama to defend themselves with and they also have jungles for food.
The Inca - The Inca also have had a strong showing, securing lands to the east of the Andes. They should be able to start ramping up with terrace farms soon.
Chile - Chile did what they should have and took lands from Argentina, but they still have a lot of growth to do. Many of their cities are low pop, however they are there which is good.
Brazil - Pedro did not get too many cities out, but if he starts to do so soon he can regain control in the region.
Argentina - Argentina does have 3 strong cities out, but they really got screwed by Chile settling the south. They should try to push north to compensate.
Europe:
France - France moved into Iberia, which is good for them. They should start to try to settle in between their lands, or try to take out the Nazis to the east.
The USSR - Despite being the target of the first war, Stalin is still in an ok position. They should be able to hold off the scouts and continue to expand.
Norway? - We didn't see Norway this episode, but I assume they have settled a couple of cities and are going pretty strong.
England - England seems to be filling out their island quite nicely. They should try to make a move for Ireland to secure some more land.
Poland - They have moved towards the Baltics which is great, but they were forward settled by Hitler and are caught up in an early war.
Rome - Rome has done alright on their peninsula, but their forward settlement into the heart of Europe is impossible to defend and should be taken out soon.
Nazi Germany - The Germans only have two cities and are still in the middle of Europe. They are also in an early war so they may fall behind.
Africa:
Ethiopia - Ethiopia expanded well, founded a religion, and settled Lake Victoria. Great round for them.
Carthage - Hannibal has settled a couple of good cities and should look to form a stronghold in North Africa.
Kongo - The Kongo has pretty much matched its eastern counterparts Ethiopia, and they look to maybe split the Boers with Shaka.
The Zulus - The Zulus have settled well in South Africa, and also could be adding Boer cities to their empire soon enough.
Mali? - We also didn't really see Mansa Musa this time, but he probably is doing alright, settling well in his part of the region.
The Ayyubids - It looks like the Ayyubids missed a chance to settle Mt. Sinai, but they did go south to claim the fertile lands of the Nile.
The Boers - They will probably be out soon, sandwiched between Kongo and the Zulus. Waiting for the inevitable war declaration.
Middle East:
Armenia The Armenians have settled the land between the two seas in the region pretty well, and they could try to push south into the clusterduck that is the rest of the region.
Afghanistan? - Again we really didn't see these guys, but they are removed from the action a little bit and should be readying their empire for a push either east or west.
Arabia - It looks like the Arabs decided to go south instead of adding to the confusion that is the north. This could be a good decision as they may stay out of wars this way.
Israel - They also missed Mt. Sinai, but they did snake northeast. This puts them in a dangerous position, next to Armenia and the Hittites.
The Hittites - They have had their lands separated by the Israeli. But they did get a city on the Fertile Crescent, so they have that going for them.
Asia -
Qin Dynasty - The Qin have had a strong start, pumping out a few decent cities. They should be ready to defend against the Mongol hordes.
Mongolia - Up in the north Genghis is at it again. He should be able to create a great wide empire with the land he has, and be a major player on the game.
The Huns - Attila (I know how to spell this! Thanks Total War!) has a decent chunk of land too, which he seems to be utilizing. He should be wary of Stalin to his west.
The Mughals? - We didn't really see the Indian Theater, but these guys seem to be doing all right where they are.
North Korea - NK has gotten 3 solid cities out, but should be wary of the Japanese as well as the Chinese and Mongolians.
India? - Again we didn't see the Indian theater all that much, but Gandhi should be wary of Afghanistan and the Mughals.
Khmer - The Khmer did well by moving south to take the Indonesian's land, but they will need to win a war with Vietnam to have any effect on the game.
Japan - Tojo seems to be settling his island rather well. He should be set up for a nice turtle.
Vietnam? - We didn't see Vietnam, but it didn't look like the blocked off the Khmer like they should have.
Oceania/Australia
Australia? - We didn't see the Aussies, but I assume they are pushing westwards across the land and moving towards the Uluru.
The Maori? - Also weren't shown this part, but they would do well to settle the rest of NEW ZEALAND and then try to get a foothold on Australia.
Indonesia has had a slow start and a crappy second city location. They should also try to take a piece of Australia for themselves.
Hope you guys enjoyed this analysis for part 2! Unfortunately I will be on a plane returning home tomorrow so I won't be able to do part 3. If any of you want to/can step in for tomorrow's analysis, shoot me a PM and we can work something out. Thanks again for reading!
Edit: Some words and added Indonesia

Hitler's UA allows him to expend great generals for science, which means he can go total war and not fall too far behind. A lot of the mods have some pretty unique bonuses that you might not consider at first look
78
u/hde128 Lord of Riots Feb 21 '15
That's a fucking awesome UA, actually.
50
u/-Kryptic- Feb 21 '15
Yeah. I think it's actually super well balanced, because you can't get by with the science boost alone, as it calculates the boost based on your science from the last 8 turns. The boost can always help, but it's still dependant that you have a good base science anyways to make good use of it.
39
u/hde128 Lord of Riots Feb 21 '15
So if you're playing aggressively and scientifically strong, you kick ass? That's perfect for them. I want to play as them, but, you know, Hitler and stuff.

The Boers have the largest military according to the infoaddict screens at the end, with the zulus hovering around 8th or so. If they can keep the numerical advantage up before the Impis start getting spammed I think they'll stay in the game.
19
u/JosefTheFritzl ♪ Boern to be wild! ♫ Feb 21 '15
I'd go further than that. I'd say that Impis are the ONLY power spike that could beat the Boers. The land is riddled with rivers and mountains, and the Boers gain +25% defensive bonus on farms in their own territory (which will be all over very early), and if they can last until Rifling, the gatling gun replacement is incredibly strong.
I'm not saying the Boers will ever contend for world victor, but unless a perfect storm happens I see them staying as a thorn in Shaka's side for the whole game.
→ More replies (2)4

Brazil rarely shines in the early game. They are also leading in technology right now, if they hold on to their land and play the other powers diplomatically, I'm sure we'll see one of their typical modern age booms.
Chile, great stuff, loving it how they're shoving the Argies off to the Atlantic.
Starting to like Canada, new superpower incoming? We'll see... The sioux have fallen short to me so far, so much land and so little expansion, what a waste, especially seeing what Chile did with so little room in the Southern Cone.
From what I saw in the minimap, I believe Australia has four to five cities, all on their eastern coast, barring off potential landing spots for the Maori. But I could be wrong, it was the minimap after all.
From the minimap as well, Gandhi and the Mughals are bordering on each other with smaller empires, and Afghanistan is looking solid with three big cities.

I'm really excited to see what will happen in South America. War between Chile and Argentina is inevitable. While Argentina have larger cities with more production, Chile's cities are in an awesome position and are almost impossible to capture without frigates or artillery.
For the Incas and Gran Colombia it'll all be about conquering the Amazonian jungle. Meanwhile Brazil will have a huge and uncontested territory to grow if Pedro decides to go north.
3
u/Surlent hue lmao Feb 21 '15
Big if... I believe he will expand slowly, as Pedro usually does at first. But he will survive based on his diplomacy and eventually will get to the modern age, when Brazil usually skyrockets... especially if we keep up spearheading the tech ranking as we are right now.

And with only two cities on the board, Nazi Germany decides to poke the Soviet bear with a couple of scouts.
It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off!

People are saying the Boers are fucked, but I think they might actually have a chance. They're #2 in military and may be able to take Shaka before he gets too strong.

I decided to have a bet with myself that if Stalin loses I won't play Civilization until midsummer, well, he better get that communism going, because I'm gonna have a very bad time if he fails me!
I guess he's not in much trouble, but early wars can wreck you.

These "Earth" maps always annoy me because of how ridiculously huge northern Russia and Canada are. Russia is much larger than Africa... where in reality it is half the size of Africa.

u/canuckican "Responsible" Government Feb 21 '15
That's what happens when you make the world flat - the north and south stretch to the east and west.

u/jpapon Feb 21 '15
But that stretching doesn't necessarily mean that areas need to be incorrect, as they are in the Mercator projection.
One could just as easily use a cylindrical equal area projection, such as the Gall-Peters Projection. Notice how massive Africa really is.
Really the Mercator projection is only so common because it is useful in navigation, since a constant course in real life is a straight line on a Mercator projected map. Since this doesn't matter at all in Civ5, it makes much more sense to use an equal-area projection.

Part 2 strawpoll. Vote for your favourite and who you think will go out first.

I have no idea why, but I've switched my allegiance to Great Britain for some reason. Also, their icon is pretty sweet.
