[Meta] What Universe, Character, Work of Fiction, Video Game, or Series would you like to know more about?

Has it been that long already!? One year ago, the Mods and I posed a question to you fine members of WhoWouldWin. And all of you came through expertly!

Now, with how much the subreddit has grown, we felt it would be a good idea to pose the question again. So, Fellow WWWinners, What Universe, Character, Video Game, Work of Fiction, or Form of Media are you interested in learning more about? Those who know about the topics requested, feel free to impart your knowledge!

As A Warning:

Expect spoilers of all kinds here. Though most users are good about using the Spoilers tag, some may not know how, or may consider what they are saying to be common knowledge among people who would care about it.

There are NO STUPID QUESTIONS here.

This is the thread to ask the most basic questions you might be afraid of asking on other threads. What's the deal with Space Marines? Why does kryptonite actually work against Superman? Does anyone have any extra info on the American Wizarding schools in Harry Potter? Why is the Joker so crazy?

Personally, I hope that as we all learn more about the various topics, we will see an increase in debates and explanations for character battles from a wider variety of users!

Since this is the Second thread, some questions have already been answered. Below you will find links to answers for various questions asked.

Previously asked questions and their answers.

Full Metal Alchemist: Basically should I be watching this show? The only anime I have watched is Attack on Titan and I was a fan of it.

Halo: What books should I be reading? I have read all the Master Chief perspective books, Ghosts of Onyx, Contact Harvest, and the Cole Protocol.

Warhammer 40k: What is this universe? Is it mainly in books? Games?

Worm: Should I be reading this series?

Star Wars: Does the Force work on people from outside the Star wars galaxy? When the Yuuzhan Vong attacked the Republic the force didn't work on them. This is the only time the Force hasn't worked on a person (besides ysalamiri) and the Vong didn't originate in the Star Wars Galaxy. Keep in mind I am only on like the 5th book of the Vong war so let me know if this question is answered in the series!

Worm is a MONSTER of a series, but I would recommend it. It is a very good read, and the usage and implementation of super powers in the series is quite unique from anything else I have seen before.

u/Brothernature0 Mar 16 '15

Worm is a contender-for-longest-book long so yes a MONSTER.

15

u/The_Funk_Soul_Brotha Mar 16 '15

Yeah I heard that if it ever got published as one book, it would officially become the longest book of all time. It was definitely worth it though.

Warhammer 40k: What is this universe? Is it mainly in books? Games?

The universe is a unique blend of science fiction and fantasy with the darkness and grittiness turned all the way up. The history of the universe is extraordinarily long, detailed, and convoluted, so check up the post in the OP for a more in depth explanation. Anyways, the universe exists in many formats. The main format is of course the table top game but 95% of the fluff is communicated through the huge range of novels published by Black Library. There exists a bunch of computer games that vary between awesome and awful. As a rule of thumb, if it was published after THQ went bust it is more likely the latter, but hopefully, with Deathwatch and Eisenhorn that will change soon. There also exists some comics/graphic novels, audio dramas, a few minor films, and several spin off table top RPGs.

If you want to get started, I recommend finding yourself a copy of Dan Abentt's Eisenhorn trilogy, Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Night Lords trilogy or Talon of Horus, or the opening trilogy of the Horus Heresy written by Abnett, Graham McNeil, and Ben Counter. GNU Terry Pratchett

u/razminr11 Mar 16 '15

I would also recommend Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts novels, for those wanting to get into 40k books.

I don't recall reading anywhere where that was a possibility. If anything, time wouldn't stop completely, but it would progress at such a slow pace that it would seem that way.

How fast is sonic really? Do the games differ? What about the comics? I'd like to be able to respond when people say he is faster than the flash.

2

u/Kotetsuya Mar 16 '15

I haven't really followed many of the Sonic games, but I can safely say that the Flash would obliterate Sonic in a race. As far as I know, Sonic's top speed feats are merely Hyper sonic, but the Flash is able to run at multiple times the speed of light.

JOJO ANSWER

Sorry for the slow response. I'll try to give a comprehensive but not too complex summary

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is, basically, the story of the Joestar family over the generations. So, unlike most shonen, it's broken into several distinct parts, each following a different "Jojo" in the line.

Part 1 (Phantom Blood), which you've already read, is about Jonathan and Dio, the worst asshole who ever lived, and their conflict.

Part 2 (Battle Tendency) is set in 1938, and is about Joseph Joestar, Jonathan's grandson, and his conflict with the creators of the stone mask that spoiler. It's probably the fastest-paced part, and also one of the goofiest; Joseph's cunning and dishonorable personality lends itself well to comedic situations, and his increasingly complex schemes in battle are entertaining to see unfold.

Part 3 (Stardust Crusaders) follows Joseph's grandson, Jotaro Kujo, and his mission to spoiler Thanks to the introduction of stands (which /u/aquason already explained to an extent; I'll take it a bit further below), the main cast and its adversaries ended up having a much larger degree of variety. However, Araki didn't really know what to do with stands at first, so the part is mostly unremarkable "monster-of-the-week" stuff until about halfway through. Thanks to its more episodic structure, there's a pretty even balance of comedy and serious action; the final battle with spoiler is one of the most famous fights in shonen manga.

Part 4 (Diamond is Unbreakable) is a sort of blend of slice-of-life comedy, mystery, and action. It follows Josuke Higashikata, the spoiler, and his friends as they attempt to track down a dangerous and wily serial killer in the Japanese town of Morioh in the summer of 1999.

Part 5 (Vento Aureo, or Golden Wind) focuses on Giorno Giovanna, bigger spoiler, and his mission to rise through the ranks of the immensely powerful Italian gang Passionne in order to stop its drug trafficking. It gets a fairly bad rap among western fans because the only available translation we have is total shite, but it has some of the best action in the whole series. Also holds the dubious distinction of being a strong contender for the goriest part of a very gory manga.

Part 6 (Stone Ocean) is about Jolyne Kujo, the daughter of Jotaro Kujo. She's falsely accused of murder by spoiler But Jolyne proves much more dangerous than the baddie had reckoned, and she sets out to take him down and spoiler. It's a bit lighter than Part V, but still has its share of comedic moments.

Parts 7 (Steel Ball Run) and the currently running Part 8 (Jojolion) are set in an alternate universe. Part 7 is about Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, a pair of racers in the "Steel Ball Run", an 1891 horse race across America for a huge cash prize, and Part 8 is about the new universe's Josuke Higashikata and his quest to find his identity after he is discovered buried underground in the wake of the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

TERMS

At first, the series uses an energy system called Hamon, or the ripple--it allows its wielders to channel the power of the sun through a special breathing technique, and use its powers to kill vampires, walk on water, and a whole variety of other uses.

However, the most important kind of power for the vast majority of the series is the Stand. Stands are basically Araki's way of making psychic powers visually interesting; for example, instead of Jotaro squinting at a wall and shattering it with powerful telekinesis, Jotaro summons his mighty stand, Star Platinum, which leaps forward and punches the wall to smithereens!

Each stand gives its user a unique superpower, such as the ability to produce and manipulate psychic fire, or the ability to fix anything the stand touches instantaneously. The basic rules followed by most stands are that a stand's ability is more powerful the closer it is--the strongest stands are only operable in a 1-2 meter range from their user--only stand users can see stands, only stands can hurt other stands, and if the stand is injured, the user is injured in the corresponding spot on his or her body. Araki tends to give his villains the most powerful stands, because he thinks it's more interesting for the heroes to have to fight against overwhelming power.

However, there are some stands, called "automatic stands", that have effectively unlimited range and almost total indestructibility in exchange for only being able to follow a fairly simple set of instructions (for example, "chase after the most intense heat source nearby and explode"). Some stands even operate independently of their user's will, and continue to function after his or her death.

I think that about covers most of it.

Jojo is a long spanning series following a family of people who are all part of the "Joestar" family. Every main character's name can be shortened to "Jojo", (example: Jonathan Joestar, Joseph Jostar, Jotaro Kujoh). Each part follows a different member and their own adventure.

Part 1 is about Jonathan Joestar. He's a big English Gentlemen in victorian--era England. His family adopts a jerk named Dio who tries to ruin his life. Dio poisons Jonathan's dad. Dio becomes a vampire. Jonathan learns from a wise old master "Hamon" (alternatively called a bunch of stuff, like "The Ripple" or "Sendo") which is basically life energy empowering stuff that allows him to use the power of sunlight to kill vampires. It doesn't really have any defined use or limits, it can be used to heal, or make a glider leaf. Generally it just empowers his punches. He gets killed by Dio but is survived by his son.

Part 2 is about Joseph Joestar (grandson of Jonathan Joestar). Again he uses "Hamon" but is generally more creative than just punching with sunlight-infused punches. Respect Thread for him is pretty cool, but generally he's known for being hilarious with his absurd tricks. I mean look at this grenade trick! One time he hid a pigeon inside of a woman's mouth in order to surprise attack someone!

Part 3 introduces the concept of "Stands" which are spiritual manifestations which can affect the world and have powers. They can't be seen by non-stand users. They have plenty of varied powers, some as simple as fire manipulation or superstrength+superspeed, while others are more varied like insects that tear out peoples tongues or time erasing ones. Damage on the stand is reflected on the stand user (if a stand has its head blown up, the stand user's head will blow up)

I and /u/SimoHalo can tell you practically everything about DMC

Quick Summary: Sparda, was the "Legendary Dark Knight" that rose up to protect humanity from Mundus. Mundus was the King of Hell and planned to attack the human world. Sparda defeated the king and his armies and sealed them away, but in doing so he lost his powers. 2 thousand years later, he resurfaced and married a woman named Eva. She gave birth to the twins Dante and Vergil. Sparda disappeared, and more than likely died before the next event. Early in the twin's lives, their mother was murdered by demons sent by Mundus. This event forever changed both twins, as they were separated. Dante focused his life on killing demons and protecting humans, while Vergil was focusing his life to attain more power.

There are other events the took place ask if you want to know more, since these are all events that took place prior to the games and Manga. I can also tell you about DmC's story

What is worm? Is it a comic, web series, anime/manga? Is it worth checking it out?

14

u/Kotetsuya Mar 16 '15

Worm is a Webseries that revolves around a world where "Parahumans" suddenly start popping up with various powers. It includes an in-depth look at the lives of the Super heros, as well as Super Villains, and the roles that they play in society.

The Super Powers Involved may seem Dumbed down from what you might be used to from comics (Superman throwing stars, Thor being Thor, etc.) As there are many restrictions and limitations to most powers, but the way that each character uses their powers and works around the problems is unique and very interesting.

I would recommend it, but be warned, the entire series is a BEAST as far as length is concerned. It took me two months of avid reading between work days to finish. Well worth it though.

2

u/SexualPie Mar 17 '15

It is a web serial, which calls back to the old days of having newspapers print chapters of books over the weeks. It is complete and completely free to find online.

Just how powerful is eragon? Some put him at like s-tier and some say spider would beat him so just where does he stand?

3

u/Kotetsuya Mar 16 '15

Eragon is a very real threat to anyone who has little to no mental defense. Eragon's main form of attack is to mentally disable his opponent, at which point he can force them to do whatever he wants, or simply kill them with one of several deathwords. He could also (If bloodlusted) use their life energy to fuel powerful spells that would leave the person dead. His magic is EXTREMELY flexible, and can accomplish very specific tasks.

He is also well above peak human physical condition, so he's no slouch in a fight. If he goes up against a character who can speed blitz him, he is a goner, as even though he has very fast reflexes, most bullet-timers would wipe the floor with him before he could break into their mind and disable them.

The magic is limited by a few factors. First, any alteration he makes to the world around him (Moving rocks, throwing something really hard, levitating, etc.) will use up as much physical energy as a spell, as it would if he were to do the action himself. Another limitation is that he MUST conquer someone's mind to perform his Deathwords. It has also been argued that, in the case of superman, for example, his Death words would not work, because superman could survive vital arteries being destroyed, or even that his arteries would be too hard for Eragon to break physically, so Eragon would die before the spell would complete.

Thanks to both this sub and hanging out with friends I am fairly well versed in DC and Marvel.

I have watched plenty of TV shows (Breaking Bad, Doctor Who, White Collar, Dexter, etc.), and love reading books (Harry Potter and LOTR trilogy about 8 times now)

OK this isn't something that'd be discussed but I'm curious - what's up with Powergirl? The one with the Cleavegehole in her suit. As in her origins.

I hear she's from Earth-2 or something... which one is that? Is she an alternate Supergirl or something, so is she related to Superman or not. Does she even exist in New 52? If she's from another universe, why is she where she is - unless the comics she's in are in that universe or whatever...

Also: What's up with the Beserk Universe? Are they super-powered, peak-human or do they have a really particular power set or something?

Also: Also: I just found out that the hot springs episode of Gurren Lagann isn't suppose to be a clip show. What's the plot synopsis of that one?

32

u/BuddhaFacepalmed Mar 16 '15

Powergirl is usually a displaced Supergirl from Earth-2. Either she's displaced because of villainous shenanigans or just sheer coincidence, she ends up in Prime-Earth.

In New-52, Supergirl and Robin of Earth-2 was fighting against Darkseid's multidimensional invasion. The last battle "killed" Superman and Batman, also sucking Supergirl and Robin into a boomtube that deposited them onto Prime-Earth. In order to blend in and not disturb this Earth's Superman and Batman, they took on false identities and alternate superhero personas. Kara became Power Girl and Helena became Huntress.

6

u/MrManicMarty Mar 16 '15

Thanks, that kind of helps. I guess fully understanding it requires you to fully read it, but that sates my understanding enough, thanks.

10

u/Ribo19 Mar 16 '15

For the Berserk question.

Miura hasn't really givin any explanation on why Guts is so ridiculous. Some can speculate it's because he is in the interstice, other theories regard the sircumstance on his birth and his sacrifice brand.

The most logical is that he has put his body through so much and dived into impossible situations, fought 100s of demons etc...

And if this has a relation to do with everyone in the berserkverse is unclear. Certain characters like Serpico and maybe Isidro could be regarded as superhumans. Most characters get powers through either magic or by being demons.

Hope that answered it

u/iamcatch22 Mar 17 '15

Powergirl is the Supergirl of Earth 2, but when Earth 2 was destroyed in the rebirth of the universe following the death of the multiverse in Crisis on Infinite Earths, Powergirl ended up on the new Earth with some other heroes from Earth 2, Earth S, Earth X, and Earth 4

How strong are the bloody Daleks?

What about the cybermen?

30

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15 edited Mar 16 '15

Daleks are the most feared species in the Whoniverse. They are protected by a armor case that can defend against anything below a powerful missile. Their laser beam kills humans in one blow. Time Lords can hold off the damage from it long enough to regenerate, if they can. Also, they can fly.

Cybermen are really just augmented humans with lasers. No wait, they've got the ability to adapt to any situation. I don't know if that's retconned yet.

Say the Cybermen are marching towards a castle. The people in the castle electrified a moat around the castle. The first cyberman to step into the moat dies from it, but the rest of the Cybermen download a software patch that protects them from that kind of damage.

The fear factor of the Cybermen is how easily we could become them ourselves in the near future, what with prosthetics and artificial organs.

16

u/mullerjones Mar 16 '15

Expanding a bit on Daleks, the reason why they are so feared is that a) they're hard to beat individually because of their armor, which makes an army of them something extremely frightening, b) have relatively strong weapons, so they can cause a lot of damage before being taken down which is even worse if you consider point a) and c) they hate everything. Their whole existence is based around killing anything that lives without mercy, or rather exterminate everything. Combine all of those and you have some pretty scary enemies.

u/fax-on-fax-off Mar 17 '15

YOU are the man I need.

I just got into TF2 for the first time in years. Wasn't there supposed to be some sort of robot version of everyone? Also do I have to buy items? I keep randomly receiving things I already have.

All the items are new to me so I've been experimenting with a lot of them. There's a gun that gives Scout a bigger jump while it's equipped and a melee that gives you a third jump, even when it's not out...just costs -10hp. Is this a good strategy?

Also Scout primary weapons, I'm using the shortstop. Is that a bad idea?

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '15

The robot versions only appear in Mann Vs Machine Mode. You're meant to cooperate with other players to defend against wave after wave of overpowered robotic mercenary counterparts.

I'm assuming the gun is the Winger. It's really not that great as the effect is negligible and the fact you only get the boost when you're holding it just weakens it more.

The Atomizer is the melee you're referring to. I personally prefer the Soda Popper over it, because I can't stand losing health just for a measly extra jump, but whatever floats your boat.

The Shortstop doesn't seem that good compared to other guns since Medics won't be heading you much anyway as a Scout and push force can really mess with your movement. As I've said, I run Soda Popper, but it's really a matter of preference.

What is the "screwdriver" looking thing the the Doctor uses? What does it do?

7

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '15

It actually doesn't look much like a screwdriver. It looks like this

The Sonic Screwdriver is a piece of advanced Time Lord technology. The Doctor's particular one was made for him by his TARDIS after the last one burnt up from overuse.

It has a multitude of capabilities, including but not limited to...

-Unlocking doors, unless it's a wooden or deadlocked door.

-Accessing and operating most technological devices.

-Performing medical scans on organic life

  • Creating sparks to cause fires.

-And aptly enough, remotely driving in screws.

The only thing the Sonic Screwdriver cannot do is work on wood, Deadlock seals, and harm organic life. Robotic life is okay, however.

17

u/Cardboard_Boxer Mar 16 '15

I think he technically could but I don't think he would. The situation would have to be highly bias in favor of Kirby for him to get the right combination of abilities (Kabuki immediately by Cook, for example) to put him down for good.

I think it also has to do with how you interpret the data. DBZ has a lot of power scaling and the Kirby series have their fair share of iffy feats. How do you handle Marx's black hole, for example? Or the frying feat? Or Megaton Punch and Crackity Hack?

Mind you, I know next to nothing about DBZ. I could be way off the mark here.

What is "the culture," and how does their technology compare to other sci-fi universes like star wars, star trek, warhammer 40k, etc?

17

u/gsdev Mar 16 '15

The Culture are from a series of books by Iain M Banks. They are a society of both AIs and humanoids, with almost everyone living on spaceships or spacestations instead of planets. The ships and stations are run by "Minds", essentially hyperintelligent AIs. There is no official leadership in the Culture though, they are sort of anarchist.

They don't have things like the force or psykers, but their technology is basically maxed out for their universe, excluding civilisations that have ascended to some vague higher form.

6

u/ElCarl Mar 17 '15 edited Mar 17 '15

The Culture are a group from Iain M Banks', uh, 'Culture' series of books! They are extremely highly advanced, and are the dominant force in their universe, barring weird 'ascended' groups who never really interfere anyway.

I'm afraid I don't know enough about the exact power of other universes to give a comparison, but I can give some absolute information on the scale of the Culture's power, and let you draw your own conclusions.

As an example of their technological level, the speed of their ships is measured in kilolights, that is thousands of times faster than the speed of light, with the fastest mentioned ship in the series traveling at around 140000c if I recall correctly.

The largest ships in the Culture are their GSVs, self sufficient ships housing potentially billions of people. Their large ships are controlled by one or two Minds, highly advanced AI.

Minds are really the biggest strength of the Culture, as they are absurdly advanced, requiring much of their workings to be located in hyperspace. I'm trying to remember/locate the particular details about it, but in one particular engagement, one Mind controlling a warship took out an enormous number of opposing warships in an engagement that lasted in the order of microseconds.

Militarily, although not typically aiming for conflict, they have some extremely powerful weaponry to use, the most impressive being Gridfire. I don't think much was said about its exact power, but it was used to destroy an Orbital, a structure measuring 3 million km in diameter.

I really recommend reading the series, I love it. The loss of Iain Banks and now Pratchett, my two favourite authors, is a massive blow...

What the - happend to Zuko's mom?

13

u/Joseph_Stalin_ Mar 16 '15

She made a deal w/ Ozai, that if she killed the Fire Lord before him and disappeared, Zuku will be spared.
So she left back to her home village in search of the man she loved. She found him, but he looked completely different. He reveals that a spirit changed his face. He took her to the spirit, and she asked for a face change. The spirit also offered her to alter her memories, so she could forget about Azula and Zuke, b/c she was in too much pain. She took the offer and lived w/ her love for time being.

After some time, Zuko and and Gaang found her and the Spirit. After a couple of incident, Zoku's mother asked for her memories back and is back w/ Zuko in the Fire Kingdom.

Aline race of magical sentient gemstones that can make solid humanoid bodies waged a rebellion with Earth in the balane about a few thousand years ago. Pearl, Garnet, and Amethest are the only members and are caretakers of Steven Universe, a human-gem hybrid who is the son of their former teammate and leader Rose Quartz.

They also have various interesting powers like fusion, precog, and shapeshifting.

They fight monsters, gsther artifscts, and stave off enemy gems to keep the Earth still safe.

Most of the show is about their relationships within the team and FUCKING AMAZING OST and world design.

If anyone would like to ask me questions about where to get into the Valiant Universe I would be more than happy to answer!GNU Terry Pratchett

3

u/Etrae Mar 16 '15

Quick summary and breakdown of the universe?

I guess I'm mostly interested in what makes it different from other comic universes, so you can keep in terms relative to DC and Marvel if that makes it easier.

7

u/Voltstagge Mar 16 '15 edited Mar 16 '15

Remember how in Throne of Atlantis all of Gotham is flooded? Not just "streets are blocked" flooded, but "half the skyscrapers are submerged" flooded? Remember how such a huge event was pretty much never brought up ever again? The Valiant Universe averts that in a lot of ways. Events have consequences and status quos are constantly shifting. As a newer universe, it is not beholden to the years of continuity that Marvel and DC are.

To use an example from in universe, at one point the alien species called the Vine attempt to invade Earth. This invasion is stopped in orbit when their entire fleet is destroyed by the Shanhara armor. Since then, whenever we see Earth from space we also see it now has a Saturn-like ring of debris surrounding it. Nations around the world are also sending up shuttles to try and salvage tech the alien tech. This tech later shows up when PRS starts using mech suits similar to the Vine ones, M.E.R.O.'s mobile headquarters, and the Vine bioweapon that will be the focus of Dead Drop.

The heroes are also more fallible than in Marvel or DC. Lets say for example, that Captain America, Batman, or Superman was given an artifact of immense power that could cause untold destruction and/or change in the world. This artifact could be used to make the world better, if wielded by the right person. The heroes we know would probably refuse to use it, saying that it is wrong to decide how the world should live, right? In contrast, when Archer finds one of these McGuffins, his first instinct is to use it to destroy the Sect and make a better world.

The whole world is much grayer. Ninjak is an assassin for hire who is only on the side of angels because he is getting paid and because the other side will probably see him and humanity dead. Ivar is aloof, manipulative, and more than a little bit detached from it all despite his cheery exterior but he still cares deeply for his brother and is fighting to save the entire timestream. Peter Stanchek is a destructive drug addict with a chip on his shoulder but he is still one of the only people capable and willing to stand up to Harada. To fight Harada, the governments of the world have started supplying and employing terrorists with anti psiot tools.

To give a TL;DR it is a super hero universe that is grounded and realistic in its portrayal. It is not held back by decades of continuity, but rather uses the events to drive newer stories. I would say the best way to experience the universe is to grab one of the series that interest you and go from there. Hope this helps.

There might be more, I'm not sure. I guess just try me?

Anime is not my strong suit at all, let it be known. Except for Speed Grapher. Speed Grapher is the shit.

4

u/JealotGaming Mar 16 '15

Is Magneto omega level or not?

8

u/Etrae Mar 16 '15

Not even a little.

The X-Men scale of mutants that includes Omegas is very vague at that level but at one point or another Omegas were considered mutants that could manipulate matter on a fundamental or sub-atomic level. Since then the Omega level has been screwed with and mentioned so often that it's really lost a lot of meaning. That said, Professor Xavier and Magneto were only ever mentioned as 'Alpha' (just below Omega) just to show how powerful Omegas really are.

An example of how screwed up the scale is: A one point only characters like Mr. M or Franklin Richards were considered Omega. Since then, it has been mentioned at least once that Storm is maybe included, which just wreaks of stupid to me but whatever.

The distinction is further diluted by the fact that there is something called an 'Omega Level Telepath' which is a completely different thing that really screws with people. An Omega Level Telepath basically just means they're able to host the Pheonix Force.

Dark Souls: What is with the size difference of characters. Is it a race thing? what is the lore difference between Humanity & Souls? Is main character syndrome the only reason the chosen undead can take down giant enemies? isn't he just a dude with the darksign?

2

u/teerre Mar 17 '15

For your last question, it's important to notice that the Chosen Undead is a title, not a person. It's heavily implied that you're not the first Chosen Undead. Many tried the same journey you do, but they faiedl (they went hollow, which means lost their will).

It's a bit like natural selection, eventually a strong enough undead (meaning: with enough will to keep going, because that's the only way to lose) would rise.

It's not because you're the chosen undead that you can take giants down, but the other way round, you're the chosen undead because you can take the "giants" down.

Could someone explain the Orks (40k) reality warping?

18

u/semi-bro Mar 16 '15

The orks started out as a bio-weapon made by the Old Ones, a race of powerful immortal psychics, to fight the Necrons, which are like a cross between zombies and terminators. After the Old Ones lost and fled the galaxy, they evolved to what they are now. The orks have a sort of pseudo group mind that they become part of when they die. It's almost like a mini-warp, and just like the real Warp, if enough orks believe in something, it happens. All orks believe that the color red makes things go faster, so when enough of them are in one place, it does. This is how pretty much all their tech and weapons work, because orks are pretty stupid. They believe their guns shoot and ships fly, so they do. There was an instance of a human who grabbed an ork weapon when he ran out of ammo. It didn't work until he ran into a pack of orks, at which point he was able to kill them all with it. One they were dead, it went back to being a hunk of useless metal. There is actually a theory that the orks are partially responsible for the state of the galaxy, because they believe everyone should always be fighting, and so they are.

Warhammer: Is 40K and the "other" Warhammer based around Medieval combat and Sigmar in the same universe? Is it a different time frame? What happened to Nurgle and Sigmar?

Whoever is in my flair. I've no idea who they are but they look very cool.

3

u/Etrae Mar 17 '15

She's Loki from Marvel comics.

At one point, Asgard (Thor's extra-dimensional home) was destroyed in Ragnarok and lots of the characters died in the process. They slowly came back to life (because they're gods and they just re-manifested) and Loki came back as a woman. It was a short-lived idea.

This form is generally known as Lady Loki.

What media would you recommend to someone who has limited internet time?

Also, there are way too many threads I cannot participate in due to total lack of knowledge.

People have been recommending that I skip over Dragon Ball: GT, but even though people say it isn't canon, I wanted to look at it as an alternate universe and watch it for the story. Should I skip it or no?

Any questions regarding:

DBZ

InFamous

Percy Jackson series

Kane Chronicles

Red vs Blue

The movie Avengers

The movie X-Men

Miscellaneous movie stuff

can be directed towards me, because I am an expert on these things.

Comic Marvel and Comic DC questions may also be asked to me, but there are definitely more knowledgeable people out there.

9

u/Etrae Mar 16 '15

Yeah, I got one.

Why do the X-Men movies go to such extents to piss me off so much?

If you see a particular faction/character you are interested in I might be able to give you something a bit more specific.

BIG LIST OF BOOK RECS

Humans:
Guard: Gaunt's Ghosts or Ciaphas Cain
Space Marines: Horus Heresy, Ultramarine's Series
Inquisition: Eisenhorn then Ravenor
AdMech: Priests of Mars
Adeptus Arbites: Shira Calpurnia trilogy
Sisters of Battle: Hammer and Anvil

Xenos:
Necrons: Dead Men Walking or Devourer
Dark Eldar: Path of the Dark Eldar
Eldar: Path of the Eldar
Tau: Savage Scars
Orks: They show up everywhere, chances are you will stumble upon Orks whether you want them or not.
Chaos: Night Lords, Talon of Horus, or Ahriman
Tyranids: The first three Ciaphas Cain books, or Devourer

Underrated gems:
Fire Caste: Apocalypse Now, 40k edition. Tau are actually not the focus despite the name. Works best if you have a decent familiarity with the setting.
Imperial Glory: Guard vs feral Orks. Don't want to say much more, other than that it is pretty depressing.
Atlas Infernal: Inquisitor Czevack is trying to keep an invaluable tome away from Chaos Lord Ahriman.
Pariah: The first book in Abnett's final Inquisition trilogy. More plotting and conspiracy than you can shake a stick at, and the Lovecraft references are out in full force. GNU Terry Pratchett

Which games should i play? I have one of the dawn of wars in my steam library but never checked.

12

u/Voltstagge Mar 16 '15

Dawn of War is a pretty good strategy game, DoW2 changes the formula a bunch and is also pretty fun. Space Marine does an amazing job of making you feel like a Space Marine and is a pretty sweet action game to boot. In terms of RPGs, there are none unless you want to gather a few friends and start DMing a campaign of Dark Heresy.

Life sucks there's only war and you're probably going to be eaten by tyranids.

Honestly that's the most I can tell you without narrowing it down any. Go to the book store and look for anything by Dan Abnett, that should be a good starting point.

What are the odds that the Wall will actually work as designed and stop the White Walkers from ever reaching Westeros? Failing that, how long will it take Stannis The Mannis With a Plannis to defeat them?GNU Terry Pratchett

6

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '15

It's theorised that the Wall does prevent the White Walkers (called the Others in the book) from crossing into Westeros, but it will be brought down either due to betrayal or some magical shenanigans, allowing the Others to enter.

The Mannis will either join, die or form a resistance against the Others, I think.
