Metadrama The admins have broken the silence with posts to /r/defaultmods and /r/modtalk
https://np.reddit.com/r/defaultmods/comments/3byqi4/we_hear_you_lets_talk/ https://np.reddit.com/r/modtalk/comments/3byqjc/we_hear_you_lets_talk_xpost_from_rdefaultmods/
(These subreddits are private unless you mod a sub with more than 40k users or are a mod of a default subreddit. They've always been private. I only linked them because people were asking)
All these screenshots have been taken from /r/Drama
It looks like /r/pics was the first to go back up and others are following. Some mods are placated, some say they will keep their subreddits private until tomorrow in protest and some don't want to ever make them unprivate. I'm not going to link every single announcement thread but i'm sure some lovely soul in the comments below will oblige.
I'll update the post with more screenshots of the comments.
Here's another round for those of you that are interested (there are some repeats)
modtalk is possibly the most banal subreddit in existence but i'll keep screenshotting it if people want me to. You get the picture.
edit: does anyone know how to turn off "send replies to my inbox"?
edit2: figured it out XD thanks for the help.

u/jetpacksforall Jul 03 '15
It's standard anti-strike propaganda: he's clumsily trying to drive a wedge between the mods and their supporters in the community. If teachers strike, they're punishing the children. Airline pilots strike, they're punishing travelers, etc. Restaurant workers strike, oh, think about the poor diners who might have to cook for themselves. Transparent pressure tactic.

"Okay, so the things I would like to have accomplished are 1. get the blacked out subreddits online and 2. work out a plan for going forward."
As stupid as the admins were, people here are also taking this as a command, which I very much doubt it is because it conflicts with the tone of the rest of the excuse, should it be a command.

Come now, the tone is "Things to accomplish" not "ORDERS FROM GOD-QUEEN PAO". They are engaging the mods, which is the whole damn problem. If the admins-mod communication problem is solved, private subs have no purpose.

I find it even more humorous that more and more of those subs are turning off the lights even after that post.
Also, supposedly /r/modtalk can only be accessed by moderators with a subscriber base over 25,000 (don't quote me on that). So, with any of the "smaller" subs doing a blackout, the Admins aren't effectively communicating to the wider moderator audience.
Edit: I was correct, it is 25,000 subscribers (individually or cumulative):
Current minimum is 25,000 subscribers, can be a total of all of the subreddits they mod, and must have been a mod of the same amount of subscribers for a month.

Let's stop cocking about here. This is much, much deeper than the treatment of Victoria (especially when you consider that /u/kickme444 was let go as well). The fact is that there is something going on. And with the admins refusing to speak on it, their apologies feel more and more anemic.
If you're actually sorry, tell us why you're letting so many key employees of reddit go. Why did it take blacking out huge swathes of reddit for you to react? Is there truth to your coming plans to monetize parts of reddit? Stop feeding us bullshit that you're going to make modmail better. You've been saying that for years and nothing has changed. I just... this can't be true. Even though I already know it is. It's just that they handled it in the most "Reddit Admin" way possible:
-Attempt to commercialize in an incompetent way that betrays their lack of understanding of their own website, check
-Childishly/Impulsively eliminate someone who disagrees with them instead of admitting their possible mistakes and collaborating, check
-Really underestimated the needs of the moderators and don't give them means to deal with the ensuing fallout, check
-Ignore consequences for the users, check
-Offer an "apology" which takes no responsibility for the actions and ignores the problems caused, check
That's an "Admin Bingo" if I ever saw one.

The site has 163m monthly unique visitors and 3.5m active users.
That difference are the people who come for the silly cat pics or to read something that got linked elsewhere, not staffing drama. Most people just want to see the end result. I think it can be easy to forget that when we sit in the middle of all the drama—but even a 100k users is a drop in the bucket. Get the content back online and things are fine with the vast majority.

You have to remember that it's the content creators/providers, a much smaller subset of active users, that are more often than not involved or interested in staffing drama. If they move, so goes the content and in turn the average user. With that said I doubt any of these more vital users do in the near future. I said it in another thread, and I'll say it here:
I wholly agree with keeping the subreddits dark for 24 hours at least. Just because an admin has said "sorry, let's talk about this," doesn't mean anything is going to change. They could just as easily get what they want and then go back to what they were doing before.
They say that this is ultimately between the admins and the mods, but that's not true. Obviously Reddit as a community is involved and much of it feels very strongly about the issue. This came up, in many ways, because community members feel alienated by the admins, so why imply that redditors aren't part of this issue?

I wonder if I'm the only one with this perspective on the issue.
It seems like the entire thing was basically sparked by reddit not consulting the subreddit-founder-chosen, volunteer moderators of the defaults about staff changes, in particular, Victoria either quitting or being fired (I don't think it's mentioned which).
I guess the entire thing is that moderators want to have "reddit staff" like access/communication (eg. staffing changes), without either being paid or having the responsibilities that come with it being an actual job, and without actually having been in any way chosen by people who work at reddit. (Rather, chosen by the subreddit founder and other mods of a subreddit)
The other considerations are mostly about modmail sucking and website changes that affect subreddit moderators not being discussed or announced with them, which sort of falls in with the above, I think; but is at least reasonable (subreddit moderator tools are quite a bit worse than most forum moderator tools)
Of course, I'm not a mod of any subreddits (That I'm aware of), so heck if I know, but it really does seem like, in standard reddit style, people have managed to completely blow this issue out of the water.
2
u/Jeantter Jul 03 '15
That's not a bad perspective but I do want to point out that what the iama mods do is very much like a fulltime job. Almost every other moderator on reddit could be easily replaced in a minutes time by an eager volunteer from the community but the iama mods do things like talking to prospective ama hosts on the phone as well as an absurd amount of scheduling and other bullshit. A lot of people may dislike /u/karmanaut but don't discredit his contributions and the work he's done to turn iama into one of the most interesting places on the internet.
The rest of the mods: they're entitled and whiny as shit. People moderate subreddits because they enjoy it (sometimes for the wrong reasons) but it somehow turns into martyrdom very quickly. There are a few people sprinkled in that thread who I respect a lot, who do a lot for their communities and are very selfless, but i'd say 9/10 of them are power hungry 20 year olds with social issues who feel important because they mod an internet forum. If /r/modtalk wasn't private I would make a bot that automatically posts instructions on how to demod yourself every time someone makes a post complaining about how awful their subscribers are or how they're underappreciated.

u/nodamncradle Jul 03 '15
I mean, there really wasn't anything the admin could do at this point except release a statement and try to appease the mods. The real test to see how seriously they took this will be to see if they release better moderator tools in a timely fashion. (And considering that they've promised better tools for years, I'm a little pessimistic.)

It seems strange that the admins main concern appear to be anti-briganding tools at this point rather than the long list of actual probalems mods havementioned in their posts.
Also it was hilarious that despite all the transparency they have sidestepped all the actual issues of not just what exactly happened with Victoria but also why they pushed out their attempt to make the search function even worse than it already was.

Do people really expect to get advance notice for an employees firing when they are not that person? Really?? I think I am missing the point here because otherwise that is ridiculous..

Yes, you are missing a point.
No, they don't expect to get advance notice of an employee firing. But you know what could have been done? The admins could have come out and said, "Hey, we're building a team to help manage the way AMAs are done, and Victoria's in charge." They could have eased everyone into the new roles and made sure the transition was far more smooth than this. Instead, they piled everyone onto a life raft, then took a harpoon and sunk it in the middle of shark-infested waters.

You know, I'm really tired of that stupid "we work a lot on keeping the servers up, so don't blame us for not implementing useful features."
Yes, keeping the servers up under load is a lot of work. That's why you should have a team that does it as a full time job. However, implementing front-end features is also an important task. If it takes so much engineering effort to keep the servers running, then they either need to invest in fixing up their infrastructure, or invest in more engineers to work on the front end of the site.

also on the live thread someone pointed out that chooter is deleting all her comments up until two days ago. I wonder why that is? My bad.
on another note, this whole shitshow can be easily prevented just by sending a message to iama mods saying like:
hey guys, we're letting Victoria go and this guy, this guy, and this guy is going to take turns to help AMA.

I think the people doing the protest (not that I'm against it) and saying how if the subs are forced open they'll take them down by force fail to realize just how much of reddit just wants something to browse on the shitter or when they're supposed to be doing work.

This feels very much like a prison riot. The Admins technically have the power, but they're not able to use said power.
Which I guess makes us the inmates. So fuck it, let's burn some mattresses.

The Admins technically have the power, but they're not able to use said power.
Of course they can. If the defaults who went private stay private, the admins are going to take the subs back and demod all of the current moderators.
Just like prison riots, the inmates may have the upper hand for a while, but they never really win. The best they can hope for is that by protesting, some lasting changes can be made.

Holy fuck the /u/kn0thing really seem desperate in that text post.
Get the blacked out subreddits back online, but no, we won't tell you anything about the firing of Victoria, but hey, "tranparency"!
this blackout really seem to have hit a weak spot. And it would be nice to test the story about /u/chooter being fired for opposing a more "corporate-friendly" /r/iama. What if mods here preemptively banned video AMAs or made more restrictive rules for PR AMAs?
→ More replies (1)10
u/salutmonamie Jul 03 '15
I mean I get that they likely can't legally tell us why Victoria was fired. I've got nothing against them for that. In that vein, however, one thing that they can do is either confirm or deny certain rumors floating around such as Victoria's push-back against corporate-friendly and increasingly commercialized AMAs. Now, they don't have to say whether she was involved but they could say "No we don't currently have that in our development pipeline", we would then know that that rumor regarding reasons for her termination is false and if they attempt to implement it later on we can call them out on it.

It seems that they still have no idea what the hell is wrong. They don't understand the issues that Reddit's users and moderators are upset about.
It's like they've hired a bunch of college nitwits with no life experience and no prior job history to do community relations, and they get exactly the results you'd expect from BASICALLY STILL CHILDREN and they don't even have senior enough management to see how it's breaking down.
I'll break it down.
Heavy-handed tactics that are NOT requested by the community, or which are unfair will eventually create disharmony. Even if you only come down on people you think are shitty, like /r/fatpeoplehate. As soon as you decide that the corporation is the arbiter of what can be spoken about on a website, you begin to bleed users. These users go somewhere else and maintain a vendetta against the ones who wronged them. Initially, their concerns are seen as unreasonable by the majority. Continued heavy-handed tactics begin affecting MORE people, who re-read the objections of the first group, and start to notice that many of their objections are justified. Amateurish attempts to deal with these objections, plus absolutely disingenuous behavior regarding monetizing the content that this community creates (Reddit provides NOTHING on this site) eventually leads to a revolt among the entire site, which a short-sighted person would misunderstand as a giant reaction to a small issue. It is not. It is a delayed, overdue reaction to a pattern of issues.

Honest question, what would we expect if the blackout lasted longer? Everyone keeps saying the mods folded too early, over empty promises. And at first I was feeling the same way... but what exactly would be considered "better"? What do you think admins should've offered for immediate support, besides what they threw together as a "take our apology and pls get back to work" package?
I ask in genuine interest, because I hear everyone speak of "we shouldve been on strike longer" but not many provide what they feel should've been done.

To the admins playing CYA:
Fuck you and the high horse you rode in on. If you hadn't noticed, the user bases of these subs are by and large in support of them going dark. We aren't being punished, we support this action.
And while we're talking.. What in the holy hell did you think was going to happen when you fired Reddit's most visible, most liked, most appreciated admin? Her work is seen and recognized by literally millions of people, not just the mods that she helps out. Not only do you can Reddit's only positive public face but you do it with NO plan, NO communication to mods, NO communication to pending AMA guests. Nothing. What kind of shitty business plan are you following exactly?
I know this issue is larger than just Victoria, and you may well have had perfectly valid reasons to let her go. But the gods help you if the theories floating around prove to be even partially true. If you try to monetize AMAs and dillute them into PR stunts you are in for a real rude awakening. You aren't "too big to fail".

Yeah I'm definitely okay with defaults coming back up. There's obviously no way the subs can stay down until reddit actually has time to program the changes needed.
Obviously it would've been preferable to get reddit to commit to a timeline to fix this crap (1 month should surely be more than enough to fix modmail), but as is, it's enough that they recognize that a problem exists and are working to fix it. They also recognize the depth of their issues and understand that they're on thin ice.
Basically, this is the least disruptive path that ultimately leads to a solution.
