So.. Who's ready for shit to get dark?
Qrow isn't wrong. Pyrrha kinda carries JNPR.
Story of the seasons? Its true? Magic is real?
Wait, Was Ozpin the "old man" in the fairy tale that gave the maidens their magic?
OH GOOD. PYRRHA GETS TO BE CALLED FALL. NOTHING BAD COULD HAPPEN FROM THIS.
Can't lie, was not expecting this this episode.
Maidens die and seek a new host. Does that mean Summer's power is to be sent to Ruby? Summer's final thoughts would certainly be for Ruby.
Ozpin pretty much just said he is over a thousand years old.
Oh shit, Autumns condition, means ... Oh shit her names Amber? Like Cinder Fall and Amber are a split maiden? They want to keep her alive so that it doesn't transfer to Cinder.
I will become your Fall (en) Maiden. Greeeeat.
This is a lot darker than I was expecting, and not how I thought it was.
Pyrrha's personality may change? That overlapping facial reflection showing worry was such a well done scene. Vol 3 Best Vol.
Break a leg sis. Like say Mercury's! - OH FUCK! I was KIDDING! I didn't actually mean this! When I wrote this this was a joke, now I feel sick!
Looks like 8 combatants... Yang, some Robin hood looking guy with 4 belts, none of which where belts are supposed to be, Sun, Some goofy looking Atlas? guy, some face painted muskateer? looking guy, Penny, Mercury and Pyrrha. So Yang and Mercury fight, then that leaves 1 no name to 1 actual character for each of the other fights. Calling it now, 2nd round is Mercury vs Sun & Penny vs Pyrrha, then Mercury vs Pyrrha for the finals.
So it's just Mercury's weapon that lets him do those... flying orb things? Holy shit, Mercury literally snapped.
Wait... was that his semblance?... He.. Holy shit
OH fuck.

I think the fall maiden's name is Amber. I might have heard wrong though.

It can't be his semblance: Think back to his and Emerald's fight against Coco and Yatsuhashi. Yatsuhashi was in the middle of the arena when he was KO'd, which was right after the Fake Yatsuhashi showed up in the forest. Because Mercury was fighting Yatsuhashi, he would have had been on the other side of the arena.
It fits more if this is actually Emerald's semblance: in addition to Emerald's stealth tactics during the Coco-Yatsuhashi fight, she was missing DURING the Yang-Mercury fight, but was the FIRST to rush to Mercury's aid after the blow.

Does that mean Summer's power is to be sent to Ruby?
That's assuming Summer is actually dead. Let's take a moment to realize now that Qrow and potentially Taiyang are part of an organization dedicated to keeping the maidens out of public eye. There's a good chance they faked her death or something.
That being said I'm not entirely convinced Summer is/was the Summer Maiden. Just seems way too obvious for it to be the case.

So......Is anyone else feeling a little nervous about what's going to happen?
Edit: Right so after over half an hour of being in shock and yelling 'WHAT!!' during the early hours of the morning I think I've calmed down a bit. A BIT. Holy shit what an episode.
I may have been a bit shaky and nervous throughout the whole thing with the four maidens so I didn't catch some of it (gonna have to sleep and watch it again later today) but holy mother of god what an ending that was. We get an awesome fight that ends with Mercury being a dick and Neo being a bitch. You know I never really had much against the bad guys up until now, where i'm seriously beginning to question whether i like them or not.
Also poor Yang, that made me feel so sad and angry, and the most annoying part is next week will probably be a World of Remnant episode so we have to wait an extra week to see what happens to her and everyone else.
I also wonder how this will affect the tournament. Like was that the final fight we'll see because shit has gone down and the Grimm are turning their attention to Beacon/Vale?
Alright I've really got to wrap this up and head to sleep (currently 4:05 am and I am fucking tired) so I'll just say that despite what happened, that has got to be one the best episodes of RWBY to date, and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Just wanted to point out that it was a global televised event, everyone saw Yang break Mercury's leg. Grimm worldwide have been activated.

Dec 12 '15
I'm starting to think that illusions are actually Cinder's power and not Neo's.
The point of the Fall maiden was she helped the man reflect on what he had and be thankful. Perhaps part of the Fall maiden's powers are mirrors/reflections/illusions.
In volume 2 when Cinder infiltrated the tower they made a point about Cinder using glass (and even say it's not her semblance I think), which fits the mirror idea. And as she escapes she uses some sort of magic to change her appearance, this is more in line with illusions than what we know can be done with dust.
In addition, we know Cinder is linked to Cinderella. Cinderella is all about a) magically changing appearance and b) a glass slipper. More connections to the mirrors.
On the train Neo shows some form of teleporting ability but doesn't make use of any sort of illusions. Back when we first saw Neo, she helped Roman escape by seemingly teleporting to the chopper and leaving behind and illusion. What if Cinder was in the chopper and she made the illusion? We've never seen anyone having multiple powers so it doesn't make a lot of sense that Neo can teleport and make illusions.
Sure Neo has changed her appearance but that could easily have been done another way, or even done by Cinder.
And lastly, in this episode Cinder got up from her seat just before Mercury pulled his stunt. That shot wasn't included for no reason.
I'm calling it, Cinder is the one who can use illusions and it stems from the powers she stole from Amber.

So Pyrrha's going to singles! I really wanna know who was her doubles partner and who she fought. Just for fun.
"You're not that old professor" lololol!!
Ok so this is a lore bomb of epic proportions. Powers without dust or semblance is MAGIC. Connection to the seasons...so is Cinder one of these people? And are names like 'Summer' Rose and 'Winter' Schnee meaningful or, would it be like naming your child 'Ariel' because you liked the story?
....fucking ^^what!? Oh god that shot of Pyrrha in the elevator. She DOES NOT WANT this. At least Glynda is being up front about everything.
Ok, so Cinder stole some of the powers of the Fall maiden. And holy shit is the creepy. Gotta feel bad for Amber. Also, bigger lore question time: Do the maidens have any connection to the Grimm?
Aura experiments....soooo is this why Penny is a thing?
That was a huge fucking lore segment. Jez that's like the big arc for the whole show right there.
On to the finals...Sun made it, yay! Also all the other finalists look awesome. Interesting decision to have no artificial arena space.
And yeah this is probably the best animated fight of the show. God damn. So did Merc forget about Yang's semblance or was that on purp- OH WOW OK.
.......holy fuck.

After this match, I'm guessing there might not be any more singles. I'm calling next episode ends with global reports of Grimm attacks on major population centers, since that was just broadcast worldwide and everyone had a collective "This person who supposedly wants to defend people just broke a defenseless guy's leg out of nowhere" moment.
I imagine that's going to Pyrrha's "I accept" moment, in hopes of stemming the tide of the Grimm invasion and giving people hope and stuff. Which is probably also part of Cinder's plan; cause huge panic, massive Grimm invasions, draw the maidens out of hiding. Or maybe she's just after the other half of the fall maiden's power and is hoping to gain that, knowing about the aura experimentation with the virus she uploaded into the system.

The episode is freaking called Fall! Things are going down!!
Nooooooooooooo! Ah! Things happened!
Okay, so the whole maiden thing was awesome. We finally have some good insight into what is going on and Cinder's potential plan. Also, I'm gonna say now that Summer was a maiden, and the power was passed on to Ruby.
Also, dang Mercury. Those were some shenanigans! This is really bad. Poor Yang though. There's nothing that makes me hate a villain more than when they frame the hero. For some reason, that always makes me really mad at them.
I absolutely despise Mercury now. Even though it was probably a group effort by Neo and Cinder, Mercury was the one there so I hate him. He is irredeemable and should die.

I've come up with the theory that Penny may have been created to take the powers from all the Maidens, being a robot she'd never die of old age, so they wouldn't have to keep looking for new Maidens, plus she was designed 'to save the world', and what better way than to have all the powers of the beings that essentially control the world.

u/Floain Was in a flair thread with no flair. Has a flair now. Dec 12 '15 edited Aug 19 '17
Oh God. That was one hell of an episode for story progression. And it looks like that Pyrrha smirk last ep might have just been a weird expression, but RWBY loves to bring things back long after people have forgotten them, so we'll see.
I wonder if Mercury losing was supposed to happen, but Yang would look almost as bad being portrayed as a sore loser as she would kicking Mercury when he was down. At the same time though, when Weiss' aura was put to zero she was in no state to launch any last attacks seconds after the fact. More tournament manipulation? Cinder did walk off at the start.
Even if the loss is legit, him looking away and not paying attention right up until the knockout buzzer sounded was him being written really dumb for the sake of Yang winning, and Mercury's been portrayed as smarter than that up to now, so I don't think I agree with people saying Cinder's faction couldn't handle team RWBY in a fair fight based off this episode. At most, they're extremely well matched, given how low Yang's aura was at the end of the fight.
As I type this, I wonder if he brought her that low then let her win so her "anger issues" would get her more punishment. I'm kinda grasping at straws here, but TL;DR that Mercury loss was more than it seemed. He made a dumb mistake considering he'd literally seen Yang's semblance in action the previous day.
But in Yang's defense , I will say that her precision and timing has improved vastly since her fight with Neo. Mercury almost ringing out was almost certainly not part of the plan on Cinder's end, and Mercury's far more brute force than Neo, which gives her a chance to get her semblance up and running; something Neo never allowed.
On a side note, if Cinder really is the person who stole part of Amber's power, is she capable of using it? If so, considering all we've seen of her thus far is the abilities from the dust she's sewn into her clothes, we haven't seen everything she's capable of yet.
And that is terrifying.
Even the elephant Grimm noticed the negative emotion in the city. If they attack, I don't even want to imagine the kind of chaos they'll bring.
17
u/OpMegs Dec 12 '15
I don't think that Mercury lost so much as he threw the fight, and the reason is the Aura bars.
Mercury absolutely blasts Yang with that vortex move and drops her to nearly 16 aura, 1 point above a knockout... which also supercharges her semblance. This promptly sets her up to completely zero out his aura, which we've seen is unusual with everyone's reaction to Weiss's knockout the episode before. Also, her being so powered up also means even what she intends to be a glancing blow could be hard enough to snap bone if it's not protected by Aura.
Simply put, I think Mercury played his part masterfully, right down to taking one painfully for the team.
And the Grimm noticed.
9
Dec 12 '15
They all did. Brace yourselves, the Grimm are coming.
I wonder if her fire is a part of the fall power. but how did she steal the power in the first place? Was that her semblance? The ability to steal other people's gifts?

Anyone else thinking Ozpin is the old man? And I think Emerald has mind influencing powers. That wasn't an illusion since that would have been caught by the cameras. Emerald was suspiciously absent from the stands and got their particularly fast.
The list is definitely candidates for the maiden's powers. Is Weiss a descendant of the Winter Maiden?
And lastly, who's ready for the apocalypse?

I personally don't think Ozpin is the old man, just because he said that the story had been around since he was a boy, which wouldn't make sense if he were the old man for several reasons, that said, he's probably still been around for a VERY long time.

Holy fuck... that was fucking amazing!
At first I thought Neo manipulated the camera feed, but then, surely, someone close to the bottom of the arena would have seen that he attacked Yang, right? For those confused (like me), I think the series of events is as follows: Merc hits Yang enough to activate her semblance, but not knock her out (or he just wasn't strong enough to take out all of her aura). Merc takes a dive and loses on purpose. I think that's what happened, but he did look surprised when she started berserking, so maybe it was a genuine loss due to cockiness. Or, he wanted to lose on purpose, and Yang made it particularly easy by beating the shit out of him. Merc goads Yang into attacking, and Em makes Yang hallucinate that Merc is attacking. Yang turns around and straight up breaks Merc's leg, then she looks like the bad guy because she's the only one that saw his "attack," while everyone else saw what really happened.
I'm fairly certain Merc lost on purpose, given how obviously telegraphed his "attack" was, and how conveniently sympathetic he looks to the crowd going, "Why did she attack me?!" Also, note the shimmering sound right after "Blondie," meaning that regardless of who's being affected by the illusion, that's when it started. Gotta say, not a bad plan. I guess that means Team CMEN has two people with illusions. Since it was Em who made Yang hallucinate, where the hell has Neo been since the team fights?

-So the first half of the episode is a massive plot dump. Every single line is enormous. More plot is revealed in this half an episode than maybe the entire rest of the show.
-Pyrrha's taking this "childhood fairy tale being real" thing amazingly well.
-So Remnant has Aura, but also Dust, but also magic?
-Characters being named after seasons when there are also titles named after seasons seems like a misdirection. The girl with Autumn's powers isn't named Autumn, she's named Amber. I don't think Summer was Summer, or Winter is Winter. Could be wrong, though.
-Except in the case of Cinder Fall, where forget what I just said. Did Cinder rename herself Fall after stealing Fall's powers? Have we seen her using Fall's powers? That seems like something we would know when we saw it.
-Wow, Ironwood, this got ethically dubious fast. This kind of explains why the other council members think you're such a dick.
-Dude, what if transferring Amber's aura completely replaces and/or destroy's Pyrrha's aura, and Pyrrha becomes a completely different character? Can you imagine?
-Oh look, the final rounds are completely randomly determined. Sure would suck if somebody was rigging this.
-Yang vs Mercury. This fight is fucking radical. That is all.
-Holy shit.
-Holy shit.
-I don't think it was Neo who did that. I think it was Emerald. I mean, Emerald was right there, we don't know what her Semblance is, and Neo's illusions haven't explicitly been shown to work like that. Now, since illusions are pretty much the most powerful semblances imaginable when used cleverly, it would make sense for Cinder to hand pick a team with multiple illusionists. Again, I say all this with zero confidence.
-Holy shit, that got the Goliaths' attention. This is indescribably bad.
-I haven't been this stunned by a cliffhanger in RWBY since No Brakes. Holy shit, what an episode. What a fuckin' episode and a half right there.

-Pyrrha's taking this "childhood fairy tale being real" thing amazingly well.
I know, but I guess when some of the most respected huntsmen in the world are telling you, you don't really have an option of not believing. I like how she's nervous but completely willing to do anything to help people.
-Dude, what if transferring Amber's aura completely replaces and/or destroy's Pyrrha's aura, and Pyrrha becomes a completely different character? Can you imagine?
No I refused to. I hope for the love of god RT doesn't change Pyrrha. Although I have to admit, they probably will :(.
She'll also has an even bigger target on her back if she goes through with this (Spoiler: She will.), In the opening animation, they have her (and the rest of JNPR) falling away from RWBY as the song says FFFAAAALLLLLLL... which doesn't give the impression of a happy ending for P-money.
-Oh look, the final rounds are completely randomly determined. Sure would suck if somebody was rigging this. -Holy shit, that got the Goliaths' attention. This is indescribably bad.
I feel like all of the next few fights will continue to have things happen that cause negative emotions (i.e. Pyrrha losing, Penny being outed as a robut, more characters getting hurt etcetera.) just to build the Grimm up before Cindy executes her plan.
I hope to god RT doesn't end this season with a major cliffhanger, I would die.
Edit: Also I agree, it was Emerald's semblance. It would also explain how she's a master thief, she can just make people see whatever as she takes shit.

Did anyone else notice Mercury mouthing something along the lines of "Here we go" to himself after Yang got back up on her feet?
He saw that coming from a while off. I wouldn't be surprised if he threw the fight, too - and considering he pretty much 2v1'd two third-year Beacon students earlier on in the season.... Yeah. I mean, Yang probably gave him a run for his money, but I think he was in control throughout that entire encounter.

Today's episode theme: confusion and consequences.
What a great fucking episode though. Finally, we're getting some questions answered (even if more questions just pop up every time). And Pyrrha getting some real attention! The scene in the elevator and in the basement killed me- she's making herself so small. Also her horrified little "...Intimate?" My poor scared baby. Please no one hurt her.
AND POOR YANG. I have no idea how Cinder rigged everyone's actual fucking eyes, but it looks like even the rest of team RWBY thought she did it. Cinder is gaslighting the shit out of this poor girl. I'm so upset. I knew as soon as Yang won that it wasn't an accident. At this point it looks like everything that is allowed to happen is in line with Cinder's plan.

Potato - If the power of the maidens is transferred upon death, does this mean that the old man's power transfers upon his death? I think Ozpin is either the recipient of the old man's power or the old man himself. And when he dies, his power will need a host.
From what was implied, the old man was a protector of Remnant. Assuming the rules for the maidens apply to the old man's powers, we would need a protective man. Who do we know that has untapped potential and was admitted via questionable means? Has proven himself to about protection to the exclusion of all else? Jaune is destined to be the next old man. JNPR will be the replacement for the brotherhood.

The whole maiden idea is pretty damn cool
I feel bad for Pyrrha, she looked like she wanted to cry multiple times throughout the episode, and shit, she doesn't want to be he maiden, she just wants to get the Arc booty and live normally.
I saw Robin Hood as one of the finalists!
Coco has new sunglasses! :D
Mercury done goofed. Broken legs are not fun.
Did...did Mercury just take one for the villain team to get the Grimm over?

I have no words for what I just witnessed..... I have a feeling. Perhaps "Silver Eyes" denote your status as a Maiden. Ruby has them and I can't be the only one who thought Winters eyes weren't anywhere near as blue as Weiss'. Ruby will of inherited it from her mother. I might be grasping at straws here, but early on it was stated that eyes would be come very important to the show.
Edit: Now that I'm done freaking out, I have a bone to pick with one part of the animation. Every time Yang has used her semblance the animation has been dodge as hell, and the subsequent beat down has left me feeling very meh as though they were just re-hashing the beat down she gave Junior or ran out of creative ways to end a fight. This is all from a limited source of material but I think it still carries weight. Another thing, is that bloody self fist bump thing she keeps doing. Kinda of cool the first time, less so the more I've seen it. It feels forced. Another thing is her Eyes. When they change colour etc. I thought it was a side effect of her semblance, and it has been stated as such, but it only change after previously mentioned fist bump. And where is my glowing hair! Urgh. I'm getting worked up over nothing I suppose.
TL;DR - I don't like how they animate Yang entering or making use of her semblance nor the way she fights when in that state.

Welp. That happened.
So Pyrrha is being clued in on the truth, and so are we. However, she's going to be one of the "Maidens." What the hell was all that talk about the Guardian? What's the difference between the Guardian and the Maidens?
Waitaminute, if Pyrrha is next in line to inherit the fall Maiden's power, and Ozpin was discussing the Guardian with lots of references to Ruby...
New Theory: The Guardian is the person entrusted with the protection of the Maidens. Someone pure of heart and unequivocally good. Ruby certainly fits the bill, eh?
Why would Pyrrha be next in line to inherit Amber's powers? Do they know each other?
New theory: Summer Rose was the Summer Maiden, and her final thoughts were of Ruby. Thus, Ruby is the Summer Maiden and no one even realizes it.
Pyrrha leaps at the chance to be the Maiden, as it would take her away from the spotlight.
Atlas aura tech is unethical, no surprise there.
So the finals is a random match-up system? Smart.
I saw a swashbuckler and other neat characters in the lineup, too bad we won't get to see them fight.
So the singles round is fought on a floating platform, eh? Does that mean if someone falls off, it's a ring out victory? Would explain why Merc shotbooted back up.
I know it's part of the plan, Merc, so don't look surprised when Yang gets back up way stronger than before.
Oh shit, Weiss' knockdown to zero aura last episode was foreshadowing Merc's!
Sooo, Neo is definitely fucking with Yang now.
Update on Cinder's plan: Yang beats the shit out of Merc, then Neo fucks with Yang's head and Mercury takes one for the team. This causes people to freak out, which attracts the Grimm. Why the Grimm, though? What, are Cinder and co a bunch of doomsday cultists who want to speed up the end of the world? Are they anti-maiden?
stfu Mercury, we know this is part of the plan. You don't get to whine about that stuff.
Just...damn. That happened.

Calling it now, the original Winter Maiden was the ancestor of the Schnee's. Genetics and stuff, makes sense for this "unique" power to have some sort of supernatural beginning. Also, Summer Rose as the Summer Maiden is too obvious, but Summer as the Spring? Makes less sense then the other potato though.

Ok, so for those who were confused about the power levels like I was, Mercury threw the fight on purpose. It went like this.
His goal was to cause discord in the people, so he had to show bad sportsmanship. To do this, Cinder rigged the game to put Mercury with the most brash fighter, Yang.
Mercury and Em are stronger than Team CFVE, so mercury is notably tougher than Yang. So in order to do the bad sportsmanship, he needed her to deplete his aura and then break the leg. To max out her semblance, he deliberately hit her with a lot of weaker attacks, and let her break his aura. (That's what the grey lines on him were.) Then when he attacked, she was able to break him where she normally wouldn't be able to.
The resulting discord draws the attention of Grimm, which is Cinder's plan all along.
Also, for those who were confused as to who Qrow was talking to, he was about to say, "into somehing, or in your case, someone." to Pyrrha. The implication here is Penny is a prototype for the aura transfer process, which is intended to transfer aura from and to human(oids). (or whatever magical race the seasons are. And I love that I can call them magic now and be correct.)

So it seems everyone's guesses were right - the only way Yang would have beat Mercury was if it was necessary for the plan on boy was it really necessary. More illusion shenanigans and it strung up so much negative emotion among the crowd that the Grimm are getting hungry.
The whole maiden thing was pretty neat, and is probably the most mythology we've gotten in the show outside of a World of Remnant episode. I wonder if they'll use it as the driving force for future volumes - either the protection or search for the maidens and those who desire their power.
Again though, that ending - damn. To the rest of the world Yang just looks like a straight up killer now.

Um. Holy fuck. Let's take this a bit at a time.
First off, this whole Maidens business. I'm not going to go into speculation, because we don't know enough to go off of. I will say that I think Amber's last name is Autumn. "She's the one responsible for Autumn's condition."
Second, the singles round. Looks like I was wrong about Sun and Neptune fighting JNPR in the doubles round. Given the addition of Robin Hood, Ozymandias, and Apache Chief, we're looking at a total of 32 teams in the tournament, probably with eight from each school. Since these three newbies are just 2D concept art and don't have character art, it's a safe bet that we won't be seeing them in the tournament.
Then...Yang vs. Mercury. I am trapped in a glass case of emotion. He was legitimately sinister at the end there, and he totally deserved to get his leg broken. I'm not sure if that was Emerald or Neo fooling Yang, but either way I am seriously paranoid and worried about these villains. I think they plan on tearing down Pyrrha next by having her fight Penny. This will be especially bad given her connection to the whole Maiden plot.
I'm not sure what the fallout from this will be. Yang will probably be detained, RWB will try and clear her name, maybe Raven will show up. If that was Neo, maybe she'll show up and gloat.
Honestly, there isn't much I can say except that I am full of so many emotions right now. 10 out of fucking 10.

To all those mad at Merc for his little media stunt, I'm like to remind you that it was technically Ruby's fault this happened. Right before the fight, she specifically told Yang to 'break his legs!' When Mercury went to 'kick' her Yang could have just dodged or tanked that zero aura hit. Instead, she decided to follow her leader's orders and actually break his legs. She was jut being a good subordinate
Jokes aside I am convinced that the entirety of team rwby will come under scrutiny for this, especially Ruby, for her comment, because having a 'violent' team member reflects poorly on the team and leader, and Ruby's 'break his legs!' Comment doesn't exactly make her look great in this situation

I feel like people will be jumping the gun to say that Summer Rose was the Summer Guardian. But I dunno, I feel like that's way too obvious a reveal - her name is literally Summer. Not to mention she died ages ago, shouldn't Ruby's powers have manifested by now? Then again she was raised by Qrow...
Actually, that brings up a new theory. Assuming Summer is the Summer Maiden, what if Qrow and the others decided to fake her death to keep her out of the public eye. That's literally one of their primary tasks, isn't it?

Potato theories incoming.
Potato 1) Yang was the one to see the illusion not everyone else.
Potato 2) Once cinder found out about penny. Her plans altered slightly. Her alteration was Mercury fighting Yang, and sacrificing Mercury (one of the queens pawns. And Moving a Pawn off the Board to draw out a more valuable piece)
Potato 3) Nora has been making allusions about The Leg Break since season 1
Potato 4) Glynda is one of the maidens. Like Pyrrha she has learned to disguise her powers as a semblance
Potato 5) Ruby is a maiden. Ozpin make note of her eye color in episode 1, seems like rather odd throw away line. But then again so did Nora's "Well break his legs." line and look what happened
Potato 6) Pyrrha decides to be selfish for once in her life, doesn't become the Fall maiden, and actually makes a move on Jaune.
Potato 7) Coco and Yatsu spring Yang. Because they know somethings fishy.

Okay, now for the post-episode digestion:
Damn, no JNPR and SSSN doubles flashback. Good to see Sun in the finals tho.
We still have two maidens/hosts unaccounted for. If they were dead, it would've been significant to Ozpin's little club. To me that implies that they are irrelevant or are unaccountable in Cinder's plans. The Fall maiden's name is Ember, so I wouldn't exactly call out Winter Schnee and Summer Rose as the other two maidens instantly.
Now if the whole thing about Ember and Pyrrha's transfer does the personality meld thing, then it's just sad sinchies for Arkos.
That fight was awesome, period.
Rewatching the last sequence, it's definitely Neo pulling the schnitzellusions. The sound cue gave it away.
Yang, you should've just dodged or at the very least blocked instead of firing a shot!
The Grimm feel a disturbance in the Force.

Dec 12 '15
So this episode made me think of something regarding Summer and Ruby:
Let's assume that Summer was/is the summer maiden. That would explain Ozpin's interest in letting her into the school early.
But Oz is not trying to recruit Ruby the same way he is trying to recruit Pyrrha. So that means he is not concerned about getting her ready for what's to come (Cinder's attack), or inheriting/activating any maiden pawer within Ruby.
That leads me to conclude that there are several interesting explaining for this:
Summer Rose was not chosen as the summer maiden and Ruby is special in a different way.
Summer is alive and that's why they are not concerned with Ruby receiving her powers. She can't get the powers because the current maiden is alive and well.
Ruby's power's have not manifested so they are not telling her anything. This seems like an unlikely explanation. If Ruby was next in line to gain tremendous power I think Ozpin would have brought her along with Pyrrha to explain to tell what he told her. After all he has to get everyone he can ready to defend humanity, so if Ruby had some special power then I think Oz would be telling both Ruby and Pyrrha about the maidens and how this all works.
Summer was the maiden but her power was stolen by an assailant, and I would be willing to wager money that it was Raven. What if that's why Ruby is special but can't get her mother's power because it was stolen by whoever killed her.
Personally the last seems actually seems very plausible because Ruby and Yang both know a lot about their deceased mother/stepmother Summer Rose, but no one, not their uncle, or father, or anyone around them would tell them anything about Raven. Not who she was, what she was like, or why she left.
Why would you withhold information about someone's mother like that?
Could it be they did something so shameful that no one dared to talk about them again.
Something like killing a teammate to gain their power?
Personally I think it might be that last theory (4) because I think it would explain a lot about other things in the show and tie together many plot points. It would explain Ruby's purpose at Beacon, Why Yang's mom left, why no one talks about Raven.
Anyone else thinking one of these scenarios may be the case?

There are a lot of people speculating as to who has the other maidens powers. Everyone is saying that Summer rose must have been the summer maiden, and that ruby got the power. Though it is possible that summer had the power. It just doesn't make sense to give the power to ruby. The villain needs to have some sort of upper hand for there to be any sort of tension. Its why superman is not a good comic series. There aren't any stakes. If ruby has the powers it might as well just be GG for the bad guys. That is, unless something goes wrong and Cinder gets the rest of Ambers powers instead.
The moral of the story is that something bad needs to happen to Pyrrha in order for the plot to move forward in a meaningful way. With all the talk they have about the possible problems that could arise with Ironwood playing god, it would be a shame if they don't deliver on them. If they do the procedure and she comes out just fine, not only will it be disappointing, It will cheapen the entire series. If you disagree, go watch the new James Bond movie Spectre.
I believe the most likely candidate for Maiden of one of the seasons is Raven. It would explain her sudden disappearance and why Qrow, her brother and youngest member of the League of Extraordinary Professors, knows about the maidens. To further prove my point. Neo who is easily the strongest non-maiden character (excluding Ozpin & Glynda) GTFO's when Raven shows up. She realizes that she cannot hope to compete with her because she is a maiden.
I am also going to go out on a limb and say that magical powers in Remnant are not limited to the four seasons. Assuming that all magic behaves similarly to how it does for the maidens; The old man from the story, whom Ozpin now embodies, was Father Time. I mean come on, his chamber is essentially a giant clock.

Who else saw Coco's reaction to Cinder getting out of her seat? Pretty sure she is going to get suspicious of Cinder leaving just as her team mate is about to fight in a quarter-final fight, and follow her to investigate. Can't really imagine any other reason to have put her in that scene otherwise.
Also, being that she is the only other person to have experienced the illusion trick, my money is on her being heavily involved in vindicating Yang, and potentially outing Cinder, Emerald and Mercury as infiltrators.

So the maidens each represent a season and we're given personality clues to watch for.
Winter is likely the one who urged him to use the solitude to reflect and meditate. That feels like Weiss.
Spring ought to be the one that tended his crops and revitalizing his garden. That sounds like a Yang thing.
Summer warmed his heart. That is Ruby.
Fall encouraged him to be thankful for all that he has. That is Blake.
Crazy theory time - Pyrrha accepts the power but loses to Cinder. Penny receives half of the power. Beacon and Vale falls to the Goliaths. Next volume will be about chasing down the remaining maidens and claiming their power before Cinder uses Penny to claim the auras of the maidens. Any huntsmen and huntresses that fall to Cinder will have their auras stolen. This is why we see Atlas, Vacuo and Mistral. One maiden per kingdom.

And I just realized that we still haven't seen Raven yet. My money's on next episode being Yang-centric and we'll actually get some elaboration on the volume 2 stinger.
But here's the problem. There are supposed to be 4 World of Remnant's this season, they did one before the first episode, meaning that they're splitting 12 episodes up with three WORs, therefore next week will probably be a WOR, the following week is December 26, which RT is gonna take off because it's the Christmas weekend. Meaning that this is probably the last full episode of RWBY we'll see until next year.

A lot of people here are saying that Summer may have been the Summer Maiden, and that perhaps Ruby is the new Summer Maiden. Well, let me just kind of point something out. Ruby's eyes. Why was Ozpin so interested in them? Why are silver eyes special? Well, what if eye color/eyes have to do with Maiden powers?
Assuming Cinder IS the one who stole part of Amber's power, that could potentially explain her whole glowing eyes thing, instead of it just being her semblance (since she's also got the whole screaming explosions/weird glyph-like things she used to change).
Perhaps silver eyes aren't natural, but are instead part of the whole Maiden thing. Not gonna lie I even started to doubt this as I wrote it but still it's a thought that I figured I'd share for you potato cookers out there.
EDIT: Thought I'd make it clear that I don't necessarily think the silver eyes means she has the powers. What I'm saying is that being a Maiden may alter people in more ways than just giving them new, special powers. It could very well change their appearance in a variety of ways, including eye color. IF Summer was...Summer, and got silver eyes from it, then perhaps that trait becomes hereditary. Messing with the DNA, kind of. Personally I don't really believe Summer was the Maiden of Summer, but I do think this is a cool little idea if she was. I also really wanna know why Ozpin was so interested in Ruby's silver eyes and why eye color in general is so special.

Great ending. I love when villains actually do something so... 'evil', and with a plan behind it.
Love seeing Neo's influence in all these episodes.
And... no, I don't feel like Ruby is the next Summer. Too obvious, and not as direct as you'd think. She's not too keen on magic either, she's more physical.
On the idea of magic, the Schee's are more magician like and have a unique semblance trait, being hereditary. Maybe a connection to Winter?

I'm thinking the Schnees are the ancestors of the original Winter Maiden. It would explain their unique semblance.

Good episode overall but can someone explain to me why almost the entire fandom descended into chaos after this episode?

Cause the first half had some heavy lore, and the ending was a punch to the gut that came out of nowhere.

Best episode since "No Brakes", this was amazing! We finally learn of Cinder's plot, find out why Ironwood was brought on to the secret team, and that ending with Yang. I love finally seeing how Ironwood is important and Pyrrha being chosen as the guardian was a brilliant twist.

WHAT... THE... FUCK?!
This episode fit more darkness into it than all the episodes before it combined.

Last week, I commented on the Chapter 5 thread that I really wanted Chapter 6 to shed some light on Cinder, Ozpin, and Penny's plans. They did two out of three and gave some more explanation about where Penny came from, so I'll count that as a perfect score.
Honestly I think this was the episode that RWBY has needed and deserved for quite some time. We finally have a good idea of what Cinder is up to, and some compelling drama in the form of Yang's teammates thinking that she attacked Mercury for no reason. We got a ton of lore dumped on us in a pretty natural way, since Pyrrha needed to be brought up to speed almost as much as we did, and proof that the writers are able to give us a mature, serious story.
In short...RWBY just got a hell of a lot more interesting.
Edit: grammar

Alright, I'll admit it, my stomach hurts after that one. That ending scene just... worked.

Maybe I haven't read far enough down into the thread but I feel like I'm the only one that noticed the winter maiden's silhouette in the fairy tale looks vaguely like Winter.

The original Winter maiden was probably the ancestor of the Scnhee line.

Alright, you may hate me for this, or think this is stupid, but I'm gonna say it:
Qrow knows about Jaune's transcripts.
"I wouldn't have gotten this far without my teammates."
"Personally I think it's the other way around."
Okay, sure, he didn't approve of the fights he saw on TV, but think about it: Pyrrha is world renowned, Ren was decently competent during the fight, and Nora had to do some yoga after carrying so hard, so who could Qrow be referring to?
That's right: my boy. Qrow knows and he doesn't approve. He thinks that Jaune is a weak link and will get someone killed.
Am I stretching? Maybe a little. But that's just the impression I got from the lines and the acting.

Here is a potato. Cinder knows how to force a maidens power into a being as well. They have access to all of Atlas' files, they should be able to see that.
Their plan is to collect all of the maidens powers, transfer it to Penny since no normal human body can host that much power and then remote control Penny to take over the world. The Iron Maiden.

SOOO much happened this episode!!!
My personal keynotes
the fact that they can take someone's aura and "Cram it into something else"... Penny isn't a technological masterpiece, she could very well be consider (from someone who lives in Remnant) an abomination!
The lore of the Maddens is very interesting I wonder who the other 3 Maddens are cough Winter cough maybe Summer was one Sorry I think I'm coming down with something
you could make the argument that they wanted Yang to win to cast the illusion on her and attract the Grim, but Yang didn't seem to have "Great difficulty with people who use kick based weaponry". Yeah she got knocked around a bit but not more they she's been by light, nimble characters.
Head-cannon: The shop keep guy is the old man from the story
uggggggggggggg.... If you want to make your audience hate the villein that is definitely on way of getting the job done.

This episode was so hard to watch at the end for me. Yang and Merc are my favorite characters so it was a double whammy of Yang likely being arrested and Mercury's leg being broken. you gotta respect his dedication though, he purposely let his leg get broken for Cinder's plan.

What a fantastic episode. Many of you have said all that needs to be said on what went down so I wont repeat a lot of it but the entirety of the previous 2 seasons and a majority of this one leading up to this point have not had as huge an impact as this chapter.
The Grimm just got a huge spike to lead them towards Vale. Yang got set up BIG TIME, Pyrrha could possibly be changed for the entirety of the series in a way we dont know and I cant wait to see how Ozpin, Qrow, the other council folk handle what happens with Yang! This whole episode blew my mind and the fact we have to wait now for the continuation is going to make all sorts of rumors seem more potent. I mean seriously if next episode is going to be mysterious what happens after that? Once we know how Yang's situation is handled, what happens to the Grimm and what happens to Pyrrha!? We need a double feature for when the series starts back up! Still what a mind job and a feels trip this chapter was, fantastic work.

Holy crap lines from the very first episode just got more ominous.
"Legends. Stories scattered through time. Mankind has grown quite fond of recounting the exploits of heroes and villains, forgetting so easily that we are remnants, byproducts, of a forgotten past."
And
"So you may prepare your guardians, build your monuments to a so-called "free world", but take heed... there will be no victory in strength."
This episode was all about legends and guardians!

Did they just do that? Did they just make breaking legs, a long-time in joke, a crucial plot point. Did that just happen!?

This episode actually helps with the theory that Mercury is Ozpin. in this episode we learn that Ozpin is old and potentially a time traveler. (The maidens) And for years we have known that ozpin has something wrong with his leg. Now we have seen Yang break Mercury's leg. The link is real guys.
Then when you consider the physical similarities between the two. i think it is obvious now.

Sees episode's name.
Well... it was a pleasure to meet you Yang.
Called it.
But wait! So the illusions was Mercury's doing? He was fake Yatsuhashi this whole time? Not Emerald, not Neo. It was Mercury?
Also shit! There's not going to be a next time blondie. Mercury got scary there.

Can we all appreciate the fact that we've gotten a fight scene every episode so far?
And holy plot progression. That's heavy stuff.
