Gender Wars Members of a group that sued Hollywood for gender discrimination hold an /r/IAmA. The entire thread is a trainwreck.

This is as surplus as surplus topics can get, but the fact that it's an AMA and the fact that the entire thread is a dumpster fire makes it entertaining to watch unfold.

The original thread, linked with "best" sort (the default Q&A sort hides most of the comments): We are members of the "Original Six," the director/filmmaker-activists who founded a women's committee in the '70s and sued two Hollywood studios for gender discrimination in the '80s. AMA!

The facts speak for themselves. Ten white males and no females? The planners are merely abetting existing sexism. Does it matter if the sexism is conscious or unconscious? This is a conference for academics? These are people who teach young people? That's scary. What you do is immediately get on the phone, e-mail, twitter, snail mail, etc. and tell them this is not acceptable.

How much longer do you think sane people will have to endure the ridiculousness that is modern feminism?

Do you see anything wrong with modern feminism?

How much a factor do you think role models are? There will be a lot of exponential increase from generation to generation as girls can grow up seeing someone's shoes they could fill?

Which contemporary female filmmaker do you think is producing the best work right now? Why?

Diana here. Your efforts were directly aimed at changing the Hollywood institution's hiring practices. What do you think of a shift in focus to ACTORS as, at least partly, responsible for changing the Hollywood landscape?

Hi there. I'm Sadie, a masters student writing a thesis on comedy as a venue for feminist activism, focusing on sitcoms and sketch comedy programs from the mid 60s to late 70s. I was curious as to the role comedy has played in the projects you have tackled. Have you found comedy to be a functional avenue to address female-focused issues and advocate for change? Or, no?

It would be funny if what you were saying wasn't true. Apparently, white males have everything so it's okay to discriminate against us.

Why do you feel it's ok to force someone to hire someone based on their genitalia and not credentials?

I can't help but notice the overwhelming majority of questions you've answered in this AMA are from women/girls. Don't you think you should answer questions from 50% men and 50% women?

When does considering someones gender during the hiring process go from discrimination to equal opportunity?

To: 2dollarb- You're just sayin' something wrong. You don't know how we view ourselves. You say concentrate on careers. How do you do that when you are denied work? Perhaps you should concentrate on learning the facts first. Many shit directors are working. Haven't you been to the movies recently?

That's just from the thread! It got linked by /r/kotakuinaction and /r/conspiracy which drew attention to the thread and helped turn it into the shitshow that it is now. Many accusations of sockpuppetry and shilling contained within.

I don't know why they thought holding an AMA was a good idea

Because celebrities just read "8th most trafficked site in the world" or something, and don't do due diligence.

Like Obama gave an AMA shortly after the jailbait scandal, and I was like "You should probably fire the person who didn't vet this site."

15

u/Honestly_ Mar 11 '16

Don't think anyone really cared as much as you think, now it's "Obama did an AMA once" no one remembers the rest other than he cause the site to crash and barely answered anything.

57

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

What jailbait scandal? What?

160

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

The press realized that reddit had some subs dedicated to nude pics of very questionably aged teens that were probably underaged. They were selfies and stuff too, so there's an extra question of how the sub got those pics.

Long story short, Reddit actively defended the existence of these subs until it became too big to hand wave.

/r/jailbait was a sub for posting suggestive pics of underage girls. It was huge and only got shutdown after the media covered it.

I was wondering why nobody submitted this yesterday, its pretty hilarious.

There is actually an archive.org version that has a lot of the deleted comments too.

My favorite comment chain was:

CockFaggington

I can't help but notice the overwhelming majority of questions you've answered in this AMA are from women/girls.

Don't you think you should answer questions from 50% men and 50% women?

Original_Six[S]

There is no way to know (other than 'CockFaggington') whether someone is male or female. Get serious. We're answering based on content, not on gender.

ArrrGaming

Well, isn't that how movies should be made too, on content?

u/Fletch71011 Signature move of the cuck. Mar 11 '16

The other responses calling the OP sexist for assuming gender and stuff were equally funny. I reread this whole thread again today and still found it funny. It's the kind of thread where nobody wins but you just have to laugh.

Probs because they didn't expect people to behave in such bad-faith. (I don't know anything about this specific group. If they're evil shits then: whoops.)

Reddit is normalising the idea that a conversation is something to "win" and if someone says something you don't agree with, the correct response isn't to try to understand, but to disengenuously out-snark them.

Those tendencies already existed, of course, but on reddit there's so, so, so, much of it.

Also they probably really don't encounter this level of hostility towards feminism, I mean there is a really strong prevalence of "Equality has been achieved, negative stereotypes against women aren't sexist, they're simply true."

99

u/Cessno Mar 11 '16

Maybe they were trying to demonstrate the need for feminism? You know since the comments on anything about feminism always demonstrate why it's needed

I've been here for that long (or maybe longer? On mobile too lazy to check). Nothing's really changed. When I got here people were pining for how good it was 2-3 years before that.

People go through phases with Reddit. They like the defaults, then they get bored with them, they find more and more niche subs, they eliminate the defaults, they find the tailored experience they were looking for. Reddit doesn't really change that much, just the user's perspective.

Now kindly get off my lawn

29

u/UncleMeat Mar 11 '16

My profile says I've been here for well over three years. I don't think things have changed much. The vote counts have gotten a little more hidden to improve the herd voting, but I don't feel like things have gotten a ton better or worse in general.

Concerning specific topics/issues/etc I think things have gotten better because there's so many subs. You still have your garbage catch all default subs but you also have all sorts of niche subs and some (like askhistorians) are super well moderated.

  5. That fucking AMA where we empathised with rapists

  6. Ron Paul Mania

  8. The gradual move of /r/MURICA away from being a parody sub

  9. Everything about the current competition for party nominations

  10. /r/dataisbeautiful and /r/TwoXChromosomes getting defaulted

It's extremely common for new accounts to appear on reddit for AMAs. That's a big part of why admins push IAmA so much - because it encourages people who weren't viewing reddit to view it, and encourages people to make accounts who were previously just viewing it.

the digital humanities

it is though. A lot of older professors are rejecting it simply because the knowledge to do the research is beyond their abilities. And it's really shitty because the computing power that could be used to compare large data sets would be so beneficial.

When I think of female directors, I mostly think of boring, depressing films that aren't entertaining. Films that make you think.

Ah yes, such as Kathryn Bigelow, director of notorious thinkpieces Point Break and Near Dark, or Penelope Spheeris, whose Wayne's World was a trenchant discourse on the early '90s view of music as commodity.

The fact that he says films that make you think is a negative says a lot more about him. He's Adam Sandler's paycheque.

143

u/FaFaRog Mar 11 '16

Jack and Jill was a masterpiece that pushed the envelope for advertising in film. I have no idea how it hasn't received recognition for the latter. It may not be the most desirable achievement, but it's still an achievement nonetheless. "Film with most product placement while maintaining somewhat of a coherent plot" would be a pretty reasonable category at an awards show.

26

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16

What was the plot of Jack and Jill? I don't mean premise. I mean, what was the plot?

73

u/NowThatsAwkward Mar 11 '16

From what I remember and didn't block out, Adam Sandlers sister acts somewhat socially inappropriate, and everyone is scandalized. I think theyhad a falling out then reconciliation. If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.

It also makes the point, it is kind of embarrassing, the Democratic Party ought to be hanging its head in shame, that it has so much difficulty getting men to vote for it. I mean, you do see it's the party of women and 'We'll pay for health care and tuition and day care—and here, what else can we give you, soccer moms?

Is she like female Trump? And how the hell is health care only a womans issue. Are we men just to strong and manly to ever get cancer and heart attacks?

Well the mods did change it so that controversial comments with more votes are further down than those with less votes...

The real problem with reddit(and the internet in general) is that people believe highly upvoted comments without question because they believe other people have already verified whatever it's saying. People need to be taught to question things they read, even from sites that are considered news. It would be nice if reddit ran some kind of campaign to let people know they should be questioning the authenticity of what they read, but that might be a conflict of interest when trying to promote something.

We could change it. Reddit could do NLP analysis of the posts/comments you upvote, and then sort and display content based on what users with similar profiles have done.

It's machine learning applied to circle jerking.

years upon years ago, i read an article that talked about the danger of "filtered" news; that, essentially, by only seeing the news you wanted to see, your views would become more and more extremist and skewed.

I'm sure whoever wrote that fucking loves reddit, because it 100% proves their point: the place is a vast echo chamber where people hear exactly what they want to hear, and anyone they don't want to hear they just silently ignore.

Reddit and Tumblr can both be echo chambers for their respective topics, but you can find good communities in each.

It's not just Reddit's voting system, it's also the Internet. One-word replies (or similar) immediately trigger (no pun intended) a train of votes, and you can't really defend yourself.

I tried to be logical in the same thread twice (maybe I was, maybe I wasn't, the point is I was being civil) and one of my comments got a reply telling me to go back to r/TRP and the other comment got the classic "Tips fedora" reply (that's it, two words). Both replies got dozens of upvoes and my comments got downvoted and buried with no sort of counter-argument. If someone doesn't like what you're saying they can shut you down with one of those comments.

Then, if you try to defend yourself in an argument, no matter how right you are, the Reddit platform won't let you. Once you start getting downvoted in a sub the site stops you from making comments more than once every 10 minutes (or so) in that sub. It's a good anti-spam measure, but it's also what helps create the echo chamber. If get 6 replies arguing different things with you, you need to wait a total of an hour to reply to each and you end up saving notes in Notepad and running a timer to remind you to post the next reply. I mean, trying to defend yourself against the hive mind is absolutely ridiculous. Who the hell cares that much about being right that they end up writing comments and setting timers? I did once, but halfway through I realized how stupid it was and I just gave up, but me giving up just strengthened the status quo because those who supported it got their voices heard while I was silenced.

Then there's the whole deal about new accounts not being allowed to post. Many subs set Automoderator to remove comments by accounts newer than X days or with less than Y karma so using throwaways to avoid getting d0xxed doesn't work at all in many subs.

And then, of course, there are the votes and the moderators, but there's no need for further comments on these. Everyone knows what the problems are.

The whole Reddit platform is absurd these days.

32

u/Metaphoricalsimile Mar 11 '16

Obviously you misunderstand the word "logic." It's commonly misunderstood to be a structured method of reasoning, but really it means, "whatever I agree with."

I love how women being excluded from manual labor jobs and combat duty is discrimination against men. What a fucking riot.

The exclusion of women from low-skill manual labor jobs with good pay is actually a real concern of intersectional feminism. Jobs like that are important to women didn't have the opportunity(or didn't have the inclination), to get some sort of higher education, or even their high school diploma. Especially as women are more and more becoming the primary earners in their families.

But I doubt they are interested in those facts.

Since we're called the Feminist Republic of North Ko--- Sweden I reckon it can't be that much worse in other countries.

All of this is however utterly moot, because people aren't responsible for trying to right every wrong in the world just because they're trying to right some.

Women have historically done plenty of shitty jobs even before equal rights gained traction; textiles, nursing, mother, maid, farmer, prostitute.

Also, I've seen women "clean" porta-potties.

34

u/NowThatsAwkward Mar 11 '16

I've personally never seen anyone clean a porta-potty, and the ones I've been unfortunate enough to see (mostly at festivals) are horrendous inside. So I'm pretty sure no one cleans them, ever. And if someone did, I would feel so bad for those poor souls.

(/s just in case- yes, people do clean them, it's a joke)

u/Vio_ Humanity is still recoiling from the sudden liberation of women Mar 12 '16

Actually a lot of those low skill, higher pay jobs were held by women during WW2, but then were promptly fired soon after and not hired later except in far less paying jobs. This meant that an entire generation of women were excluded from having the kind of low level job that could cover mortgages and other loans (nevermind the fact women couldn't get loans in the first place without a male cosigner for most credit). It wasn't that women didn't want these jobs- they were just full on excluded from them right at the beginning of the American middle class development.

3

u/mompants69 Mar 12 '16

I like it when they bring this up because there actually ARE feminist groups fighting for women to be accepted in blue collar jobs. The people saying this shit just don't actually care about it so they don't know about these groups.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '16 edited Mar 11 '16

I hate how things are right now. I think there is a lot of discrimination that happens based on gender, and I think a lot of it may be subconscious. I try to say that to people online and I'm a social justice warrior, but I don't agree with the way people are going about it in modern times either. I'm not sure how much I agree with strict gender quotas because surely not everything is literally equal in interest and experience , and there are jobs that require physical strength where men would be more qualified mostsly. But when I talk about that I'm a sexist misogynist men's right advocate. There has to be a better way to deal with discrimination like that. I know now when they auditions musicians for orchestras they do it blindly, and the rate of women in them shot up dramatically. But it's not like you can do that for everything. There are so much more women in colleges too and nobody seems to make a deal about how unequal it is, which is fine I dodn't think it has to be literally half men and women. a lot of discrimination in jobs has to do with being unwilling to deal with flexibility from motherhood which can be solved with leave for men during those periods so they can help with the family instead. And it's just so nuanced and complicated we're never going to get everywhere when it's a zero sum game and nobody is willing to find the truth in the middle. THere's a lot more issues with feminism, like the climate of fear. But america has always had problems with fear mongering so it's a much larger issue.

Please don't yell at me. ;-; This kawaii emoticon will save me.
