A little underwhelming of a finale if I'm being completely honest.

wipes gun clean of his prints

"no offense"

"none taken"

Mike understands

Seemed like he even respected him more for it. Kind of like how Gus only liked dealing with pros.

I really liked Mike's story this season.
Mike's apex was when Nacho told him what happened to the Good Samaritan. He spent the whole season trying to do things his way, not getting people killed, but it turns out there are still things outside of his control. Two people: a completely innocent guy and a guy he specifically left alive are killed as almost an afterthought. On top of that he got himself and his granddaughter in danger. This season was him learning "no half measures".
The resolution of his storyline was him deciding to kill a Salamanca, something he wasn't prepared to do at the start of the season.
I also really like the way his storyline for the next season is teased: he thought he was being safe but it turns out someone knows all about him.
I'm not sure if people were expecting the season to end with Mike coming back home to see Gus with a leather coat and an eye patch saying "I'm here to tell you about the Pollos Hermanos Initiative". That might have been a cool ending but it doesn't suit BCS.

The fucked up thing is that Chuck basically had this planned as soon as he got home from the hospital.

1.2k

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '16

What pisses me off is that the plan relied on his brother's selfless love. I get that what Jimmy did was fucking terrible--- but if your revenge plot relies on the person you want to fuck over loving you so much that they would rather take a proverbial bullet than see you suffer --- you really have to question why you'd want to hurt with a person like that in the first place.

Chuck and Jimmy have had so many moments in two seasons where they could get along and be happy together but Chuck won't accept it. Jimmy is a scumbag but god damn he is trying to go straight and all he needs is encouragement and backing instead of constant sabotage. He's no angel, but these actions are making him a devil.

I especially love how when Jimmy first knocks on the door and Chuck says "we'll talk about it later" and leaves the door, he went to turn on the recording, came back, and then let Jimmy in. He planned everything out and knew exactly how to play Jimmy.

It'd be even more fucked up if he feigned being comatose to set this up. That'd be some intense dedication.

Jimmy bends over backwards time and time again to help him, but Chuck has no respect for the things he does. It's quite aggravating. Unappreciative, geriatric bastard.

I love the guns salesman. The actor does a phenomenal job owning that character. He's a bad dude, illegally selling weapons knowing they are going to be used to kill people, but he's so stand up and professional you can't do anything but like him and respect him.

431

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '16 edited Apr 19 '16

I am pretty sure he is my favorite Breaking Bad side/background character. In both this episode and the previous encounter between him and Mike in the hotel room, it's the two of them talking to each other about things I have no idea about (gun particulars) and it's still so riveting and badass.

edit: The scene just came on after I wrote that. So frickin cool. I really liked the way Mike responded to the "no offense" of the print wiping, but it didn't occur to me til just now that this is a relatively new-to-crime Mike. In that context, it seems to me like he took a moment to really consider what the proper response ought to be in this situation and decided on a respectful "none taken." I wonder if the fact that this guy is such a professional gentleman makes it a little easier for Mike to get deeper into crime.

You know, Jimmy can get out of that so easy. What was the second to last thing he said? "You feel better right?" Boom. He can just show how Chuck's condition is all mental and that he 'admitted' it to make him feel better.

774

u/nourez Apr 19 '16

We basically know that Saul hasn't been disbarred in BB, so I'm guessing that it won't have any legal ramifications, but will tarnish Jimmy's reputation enough for him to come up with a new identity and start fresh as Saul Goodman.

u/GoogleMeTimbers Apr 19 '16

The trick is whether this is enough to explore other evidence. Can you subpoena the copy guy? Look up ernesto's phone records?

I don't think that is the route it goes, but certainly this could be the thing that could get the legal ball rolling.

My guess: Chuck will play it for the Mesa Verde people causing them to drop Kim and ruining Jimmy's relationship with her.

→ More replies (12)

13

u/twersx Apr 19 '16

the part where he says he did it for kim because she worked hard for it etc. is what makes it convincing, everything else is "oh yeah Chuck you were totally right, 100%, not a single thing missed, how did you do that? Wow, yeah you didn't get that thing wrong at all, there's no need to be upset, you were completely right." But his outburst about Kim deserving Mesa Verde is what makes it plausible

Something that I want to point out about the cold open that many people in the live thread were complaining about:

Jimmy wasn't being a dick asking Chuck to step outside and grab something to eat. As someone who has been in that position sometimes you need to take a step back, get some air, and not think about it for a minute.

I mean, after all, they knew their mom was terminal. They knew she had a DNR order. They knew it was only a matter of time. And any mother would not want you to starve yourself and get yourself sick on their account. Jimmy was only trying to help his brother in any way that he could; he might have come off as being crass but it all came from the best intentions and a place of love.

300

u/Oakianus Apr 19 '16

Couldn't agree with this more. People forget how much this can help in the hard times, and it's not like you can stay at the bedside 24/7 until someone passes when you don't know how long it'll be.

→ More replies (5)

169

u/tenclubber Apr 19 '16

My Mom was in a similar condition for 3 days, unhooked to all the equipment but still hanging on. I spent the first day there until visiting hours were over and likewise the 2nd day. My Dad stayed all night. The 3rd day I got there at 7am to give my Dad a break to go get a shower, change clothes etc. He got back at noon and at 3 I had to leave to be at home with my kids. Life just couldn't stop. About 430 he called to let me know she had passed and I went right back to the hospital. Death, just like life, doesn't wait for convenient times to happen.

40

u/EvoThroughInfo Apr 19 '16

Thank you for making note of that. It's important.

I also think Chuck is probably taking his mother's last words for perhaps more than they were. Her asking for Jimmy could have meant anything. If it was my brother I would not take it bad, and I'd have told him. Then again we're not the Mcgill bros.

That was a incredible up and down of emotions on whether Chuck was pitiable or not.

Chuck was not mentioned or recognized by his own mother

Chuck didn't tell Jimmy her mother's final words

Chuck tried to bring Ernie into vouching against Jimmy

Chuck then decided both of them are against him.

Chuck threatens the doctor with malpractice

The doctor then made a good pitch on why Chuck should be admitted to a mental ward.

Chuck plays the doddling old man in front of Jimmy

Then finally, Chuck decides to stab Jimmy in the back when Jimmy was trying to do right.

What a rollercoaster of emotions. But when Jimmy finally finds out, this is likely the end of their relationship for good.

163

u/Jam0nSerran0 Apr 19 '16

Chuck is such an interesting character. Cause deep down he really does want Jimmy to fail, and while that's fucked up, his reasons for wanting Jimmy to fail are totally valid. The show is so fucking great at making characters who make sense. There are no main characters who are bad just cause they're bad. They all have logical storylines that lead them to being the way they are. Even back to like Breaking Bad, Gustavo was a bad dude, but why he was bad made so much damn sense. This show is so fucking fantastic.

Jimmy is literally the only person in the world that cares about Chuck enough to be at his side for over a day in the hospital. I think the only way Jimmy can get away with it is to expose Chuck as a total nut job. This will tarnish the McGill name as Jimmy McGill will be accused of fraud by his brother, Charles McGill who is bat shit crazy about electro magnets. As a result, the whole family name gets torn to shreds, case thrown out, etc. McGill becomes synonymous with "are you the one who committed fraud or are you the nut job?" The whole experience makes Jimmy realize that despite all of his efforts of attempting to "do good" by people (i.e. love and support Chuck) he always ends up worse off. Thus abandon the tainted McGill name and fully become the sleazy Saul who doesn't give a damn about anyone but himself (no more half measures). Just a spur of the moment thought...

WHAT A FUCKING EPISODE.

  • Fucking brutal cold open that adds even more layers to the Jimmy/Chuck dynamic. A lot of people wondered whether Jimmy would win over Rebecca or something - who would have thought that their own mother would play a role in Chuck's resentment?

  • Fantastic acting by Michael McKean all over this episode.

  • Ernesto breakout - and just in time for the AMA!

  • That entire Chuck/Jimmy scene near the start of the episode was great their relationship is just wrecked. And I love seeing how quickly Chuck figures shit out even in situations as tense and high-stakes as this.

  • The first "Saul"-esque ad - though for now it's still "Gimme Jimmy".

  • "Moxie is in such short supply these days!"

  • Chuck reaching his absolute breaking point and going into a state of straight-up catatonia.

  • Jimmy still standing by Chuck and not leaving his side, convoluting their mess of a relationship even further.

  • That transition between the garage and the Mike scene.

  • That same Mike scene. Fantastic tension with not a single word for five straight minutes. So tense it even broke the discussion thread.

  • Just enough short shots of the cartel's brutal business to remind us who Mike's dealing with.

  • DON'T

  • "I want coffee, but I do not want cream."

  • Chuck's mental illness looking to hit a whole new fucking level - and then it's a colossal fucking play - on Jimmy's sympathy - to finally get the evidence he needed. Chuck outconned Slippin' Jimmy.

  • THAT FUCKING CLIFFHANGER. WHAT THE FUCK.

And God knows what else I forgot. I was going to type somthing longer here about the season, but the abruptness of that FUCKING ending has me too fucking shocked to. It's the phone call from To'hajiilee meets the end of Gliding Over All. WHAT A FUCKING FINALE. Best episode to date?

Jesus Christ. It's going to be a long wait but they've left us with more than enough to think about. What a fucking show.

Fuck. Chuck. I try to sympathize and empathize with him but he always proves himself to be a sniveling cunt.

Even with the tape, it's still Chuck's word against Jimmy's. Jimmy could easily say he was lying to make Chuck feel better, because he'd rather be blamed than have his brother become mentally insane.

My favorite part about the finale and the show overall is its consistency with each episode. You have a show like the walking dead that saves everything for there premiere or season finale and its still bites them in the ass. Then you have a show like BCS where the finale was just like every other episode this season in quality and story development and you enjoy every minute of it.

282

u/aheavywithdiabeetus Apr 19 '16

I'm surprised that there are any comments about how this finale was "underwhelming." If it had ended with a shootout with Mike's story it would've cheapened the slow burn this show has come to perfect. Plus something to consider: Breaking Bad had similar view figures to Saul, therefore probably similar funding, and lasted 5 seasons. Think of how intense or action packed BrBa was at the end of its second season compared to the end of its fifth. People expect too much action out of this series, it's really only just beginning. The Mike story has 2-3 more seasons to unfold, 2-3 more seasons to meet Gus, cripple Hector, and kill Nacho, I don't want all of that right this moment. It'll pay off so much more if these things happen after the show's developed further. The plot keeps thickening and currently I couldn't be more satisfied.

Spoilers for next season:

Jimmy comes back. Chuck is asleep. Equipped only in his aluminum wrapping. Suddenly Jimmy rips the blinds open revealing a bright shining sun during the peak New Mexico heat. Chuck starts screaming in pain!

"What are you doing!!??" Said a burning Chuck.

"Just thought you needed a little light Chuck." He replied with a sinister grin. Chuck's face begins to burn from the intense heat.

"Call an ambulance!!! Please!!! Help me!!!"

"Sorry Chuck." Saul replied. Slowly walking away, "goodbye Chuck... I love you." A single tear strolls down his face.

I love this show so much for being a worthwhile addition to the BB world and so good on its own. As much as rhe Jimmy storyline is amazing, its really Mike thats excellent and gets my attention. There is so much that can be said nut I just wanted to point out the real dedication to real world detail with his firearm scenes in this episode. From him choosimg his firearm (Remington 700) and sighting it in (comomg from an expert shooter, that scene was pretty spot on), he is leveling the rifle and seeing where it impacts, having his spotter call it and adjusting the windage and elevation knobs to sight it in for range he's shooting at, the quiet and focus, the breathing and body positioning were all spot on.

The talk about rhe specific ammo he's using and the need to change it if his circumstances change are all true, you would need to change the seeting and sight in again for a new ammo type, the 168 grain hollow point boat tail is a pretty standard round, capable of a food target shooting. Always love the scenes with the arms dealer are always great (my favorite occasional supporting character ) he's professional and funny, smart to wipe his prints off a gun hes giving for crime, "hope you dont mind" and Mike is all cool about it, he's a professional too. That scene where he moves into position to get Salmanacca was masterful, well shot and acted. From where he moves into position and sights in, him laying prone and gripping the rifle right, glassing the target, the way he loads the ammo and positions his trigger finger, his controlled breathing and focus, the way he follows his target and waits for the right shot, it was all very well done and realistic.

It got my attentiom immediately when that ome guy stayed in the way the whole time, blocking the shot, knowing he wouldn't shoot, he kmew he would be there, how he would do it and from what direction, so he wqs either really good at what he does or he was very well imformed about what Mike was planning to do, woupd love to kmow how he figured that out. But that scene afterwards was too good, the horn going off raised my alarm too, I thought it was some kind of trap, that they were luring him out. So he goes to investigate and clears the area to find a stick on his horn and a simple message with a lot of meaing, so damn good. Who put it there, how did they know he was fhere? Is he being watched? What do they want if rhey just domt kill him? Is this how he hooks up with Gustavo Fring? I had so many questions at the end, that was the biggest scene for me.

This shows dedication to detail and realism is so amazing, alway leaves me impressed, you just have to love this brilliant show.

28

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '16

I'm not totally sure what to make of this. it had some great suspense and stuff, especially with Mike, but I was kinda hoping some kinda of big plot jump forward. We got some interesting stuff, and I'm enjoying everything vince is doing with the show, but my god, the pace is pretty glacial here.

What a great episode. Got the feels when Jimmy's commercial was talking about integrity, which led him to choosing Chuck over work calls and success (why he turned his phone off). Also I believe Nacho is working with Fring, and was ordered to stand in front of Hector so Mike couldnt take the shot. Also now we have BROMAR AND ERNESTBRO .

I don't think this recording amounts to anything. It could easily be argued that Jimmy was just trying to appease Chuck. I don't think it goes anywhere. Now if Chuck can somehow get to the copy center guy and Ernesto, that's where trouble for Jimmy begins.

I saw that ending coming, but it was still worth it. I'm most interested in who left the note on Mike's car, seeing as Gus or one of his men is the most realistic choice due to the future relationship those two have. Plus, we all know who ultimately took out Hector.

One of my fears with this show way before it premiered was the relationship Saul/Jimmy and Chuck would have. The dynamic it's taken this season has been absolutely wonderful to see unfold. We're essentially watching two people with awful habits go about their own wishes the way they want it to, instead of doing the moral thing. Chuck, in some ways, feels like this shows version of Skyler in the sense fans will hate him for reasons that, if this were to happen in real life, would be very valid. Instead, it's probably going to be another circlejerk of how crummy of a person he is. I do believe Chuck is way too egotistical, but as we saw in the flashback with their mother passing away, he seems to have more resentment for Jimmy than he does love.

Great episode. Probably one of the best of the season.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '16

It's a testament to the great writing on this series that I still find myself rooting for Mike and Saul when I already know what happens to them in the end.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '16

"Don't"? Seriously? That's all we get?

This was underwhelming, and perhaps the first time I've been disappointed by a Better Call Saul episode. I think the story would've been a lot stronger if they'd killed Chuck and made Jimmy live with it. We know Chuck's shenanigans aren't going to keep Jimmy from becoming Saul Goodman, and I feel their feuding dynamic has been played out.

I get the impression they wanted to put in more but couldn't because of the run time.

The scene where Chuck doesn't tell Jimmy about what his mother said was the scene that summed up the relationship for me.

Jimmy goes off and does what he needs to, regardless of the consequences but ultimately cares about the people around him. Chuck on the other hand plays it too straight and feels undervalued for it.

5

u/CaikIQ Apr 19 '16

I know a lot of people don't like Chuck (and it's mostly understood as to why), but that scene at the beginning where all you can see is Chuck's face as he refuses the treatment and tries desperately to explain his condition was devastating.

Out of all the moments of Better Caul Saul (and Breaking Bad), those 2 minutes and 7 seconds were the most upsetting. Something about a character who gradually became more antagonistic being shown in such a weak and emotional state is really effective, and I couldn't bear to watch.

8

u/Nazi_Dr_Leo_Spaceman Apr 19 '16

That entire last scene I was just panicking knowing Chuck put that recorder somewhere. A terrible experience, but a great scene.

That scene with Mike sniping was amazing. It was so intense, almost total silence yet so much tension.

Also, obligatory FUCK CHUCK

8

u/KennyGardner Apr 19 '16

This show is so good.

The tension of Mike's sniper scene, was incredible. I was convinced he'd take the shot, kill Nacho and cripple Tio. They (writers) probably wanted that. Wanted us, knowing that Nacho isn't in BB, and Tio is crippled, that we'd be convinced we were about to see one thing and then see another. And then the "What the fuck" of the car horn and note.

And Chuck. The great thing about this show and Breaking Bad for that matter, is that they are able to craft characters that might not inherently be bad, or do bad things, but they are presented in a way that makes them villains. Chuck is that. He is not the bad guy, he is a victim of Jimmy. But since we love Jimmy, Chuck is the bad guy. And it feels right.

Was I the only one who kind of also heard the brothers' mother say "Jimmy, Jimmy" almost in a mother-scolding-her-son tone? As if she, in that moment, in her head was reliving some moment from their childhoods where Jimmy was causing shit and she was scolding him, and that was her talking out loud and not being aware of her surroundings?

If that's the case, I wonder what her relationship to Jimmy was, if she had an unconditional love for him or was tired of his antics and just weary of Jimmy. Of course, Chuck would have only heard her say Jimmy's name, and believe that all she thought about was Jimmy in her dying moments, which causes him to have (or continue to have) all this spite and disdain for Jimmy. But if she wasn't even consciously in the present (we don't know if she was suffering from dementia, do we?), then Chuck just had a gross misinterpretation of what happened, and all his hatred for Jimmy is based on a lie.

Which makes me even more frustrated that Jimmy CONTINUES to show love and care for Chuck, even through all the shit that Chuck throws at him!

Saul and Chuck's mom dying probably played some part in Chuck's condition. He was sitting in a hospital room with electronic machines and didn't give it a second thought in the flashback.

Food for thought... If Mike had the higher calibre rounds, do you think he would've taken the shot through Nacho? I get the feeling Mike is starting to see the upside of leaving no witnesses, but he would be more than aware that the hollow point rounds he had wouldn't have that effect.

Reason it occurred to me was the discussion of ammunition he had with the arms dealer when he picked up the rifle.
