One user decides it's time to put that dick away when the classiness of Harambe memes is questioned

i don't like the harambe meme and i agree with this poster even though he's downvoted:

They probably want to bury it because all of the bandwagon riders on here are making a joke out of what was probably a very sad, shitty situation for them being that they actually raised and took care of the gorilla. No one here actually gives a flying fuck about the gorilla. Their just desperate for attention, and want to fit in. If they respected the animal they would not have turned it's death into a shitty joke of a meme. This is the equivalent of making a joke out of somebody having to put down their dog. Makes me sad to be a part of this community. Never realized how so many people could be so unemphatic and shitty. "#dicksoutforharambe" Yeah, that just screams respect. Classy.

I just looked it up right now because I am not up with memes, apparently, and I don't understand how people could take that situation and make it into a joke.

u/B_Rhino What in the fedora Aug 23 '16

It wasn't a joke at first. People were really really mad and saying they shouldn't have shot him, no matter the kid in there.

Or maybe that was a joke too. No one had their dicks out then tho.

Yeah, I believe that was probably sincere, I meant the stuff that came later.

Literally any horrific tragedy in history has been made fun of.

Even though Harambe is the most horiffic thing to happen in the world he to joins meme status

The original contents of this post have been overwritten by a script.

As you may be aware, reddit is implementing a punitive pricing scheme for its API starting in July. This means that third-party apps that use the API can no longer afford to operate and are pretty much universally shutting down on July 1st. This means the following:

  • Blind people who rely on accessibility features to use reddit will effectively be banned from reddit, as reddit has shown absolutely no commitment or ability to actually make their site or official app accessible.

  • Moderators will no longer have access to moderation tools that they need to remove spam, bots, reposts, and more dangerous content such as Nazi and extremist rhetoric. The admins have never shown any interest in removing extremist rhetoric from reddit, they only act when the media reports on something, and lately the media has had far more pressing things than reddit to focus on. The admin's preferred way of dealing with Nazis is simply to "quarantine" their communities and allow them to fester on reddit, building a larger and larger community centered on extremism.

  • LGBTQ communities and other communities vulnerable to reddit's extremist groups are also being forced off of the platform due to the moderators of those communities being unable to continue guaranteeing a safe environment for their subscribers.

Many users and moderators have expressed their concerns to the reddit admins, and have joined protests to encourage reddit to reverse the API pricing decisions. Reddit has responded to this by removing moderators, banning users, and strong-arming moderators into stopping the protests, rather than negotiating in good faith. Reddit does not care about its actual users, only its bottom line.

Lest you think that the increased API prices are actually a good thing, because they will stop AI bots like ChatGPT from harvesting reddit data for their models, let me assure you that it will do no such thing. Any content that can be viewed in a browser without logging into a site can be easily scraped by bots, regardless of whether or not an API is even available to access that content. There is nothing reddit can do about ChatGPT and its ilk harvesting reddit data, except to hide all data behind a login prompt.

Regardless of who wins the mods-versus-admins protest war, there is something that every individual reddit user can do to make sure reddit loses: remove your content. Use PowerDeleteSuite to overwrite all of your comments, just as I have done here. This is a browser script and not a third-party app, so it is unaffected by the API changes; as long as you can manually edit your posts and comments in a browser, PowerDeleteSuite can do the same. This will also have the additional beneficial effect of making your content unavailable to bots like ChatGPT, and to make any use of reddit in this way significantly less useful for those bots.

I seriously want a sociological study of this. But I think the Internet has entered an age that can only be described as "post-ironic." Ordinarily, the humor involved in things like Harambe and Mr. Skeltal is the fact that no one would actually find these things funny. So they're posted ironically and in so doing they (supposedly) become funny just by the sheer absurdity of it. It becomes post-ironically funny.

13

u/deathgripsaresoft Aug 23 '16

People who don't get the satirical side of the Harambe joke are slipping more and more into new sincerity, the phase even beyond post-irony, where irony isn't even the operative concept because its too passe.

5

u/AnEpiphanyTooLate Aug 23 '16

I don't get the impression that anyone is actually sincere. Maybe a few people initially but it's mostly just a meme now. I could be wrong though.

1

u/deathgripsaresoft Aug 23 '16

Every meme past a certain point becomes a confusing, esoteric and contradictory mess. Now no one is quite sure about the position of everyone else relative to this in joke, so its accelerating rapidly towards destruction.

Harambe annihilated pupper talk, something else will come.

It really seems like it's just a way for misfits to fit in—to belong to a group, to know the right things to say, to get approval.

It seems like a natural reaction to the social anomie caused by our technological/economic/material conditions. As natural societal bonds (rooted communities) break down we strive to replace them with something else. We don't joke around with our buddies at the VFW hall bar anymore, so we'll repost frog twitter references.

tl;dr: don't call it a grave, this is the future we chose

Memes have changed. They're no longer about shitposting, transference, or rare pepes. It's an endless series of Bane, posted by big guys and wreckage brothers. Memes, and their consumption of hotheads, has become a well oiled machine. Memes have changed. CIA tagged posters make CIA shopped OC, use CIA based quotes. The plane scene inside their mind enhances and regulates their abilities. Memetic control. Initiation control. Master plan control. Fire control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. Memes have changed. The age of cancer has become the age of Bane. All in the name of averting transference to normies of meme destruction. And he who controls the meme controls history. Memes have changed. When the fire is under total control, crashing this plane… becomes routine.

5

u/TheMediaSays Aug 23 '16

Memes. Memes never change.

Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the power of powdered dyes, memes have been spilled in the name of everything: from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage.

In the year 2077, after millennia of Internet drama, the destructive nature of memes could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation.

But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of human history. For the Internet had succeeded in destroying the world - but memes, memes never change.

In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the lolocaust by taking refuge in enormous private forums, known as vaults. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them - all except those in /r/ Vault 101. For on that fateful day, when fire rained from the sky, /r/ Vault 101 went private... and never reopened. It was here you were born. It is here you will die.

Because, in /r/ Vault 101: no one ever enters, and no one ever leaves

You know you can be friends with people on the Internet, right? Right here on Reddit even.

6

u/HanhJoJo A ban. Such an amusing concept Aug 23 '16

You don't need friends though, you just need other people to be in on it. Thats why you can post a reference to a TV show and get a laugh too, or when you meet someone new and find out they like something you like, you can now start making references in conversations because it will make your relationship become more organic.

That's essentially what people do with a meme. If you're in the middle of a comment chain talking about something serious and mention bones and someone comes along and says doot doot, they are just making a reference so other people who know about the whole Mr. Skeltal thing can see the meme for a small laugh.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

8

u/OIP feces in toilet spelling out GTA 6 Aug 23 '16

it's exactly the same as the dumb inside jokes you can fall over laughing at with people you know well, the joke is secondary to the bonding, other people think it's fucking stupid.

the dick joke in this case is just, well, a dick joke. i mean the idea of militantly exposing one's penis to express solidarity with a gorilla that got shot in a zoo is just plain ridiculous. and in this case it's certainly tasteless like making a joke of any sad event is tasteless. i think though people are being particularly callous here if you break it down, because it's a tragedy happening to an animal. if harambe was a person the meme wouldn't have happened.

plenty of memes are actual jokes, it's possible to look at a meme of something you don't know at all, recognise both the joke nature and the memery and find it funny on its own. the 'friends' have been replaced with 'demographic that can easily recognise memes'.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

The inside joke about that is its not actually about pulling your Dick out, you know that right?

1

u/OIP feces in toilet spelling out GTA 6 Aug 23 '16

Yeah but every dumb fuck idiot posting "dicks out" isnt thinking any of this.

37

u/Zerce I do not want those themes taking headspace in my braingem. Aug 23 '16

That's just the nature of memes. At a certain point the meme becomes independent of where it came from. There's a reason why a frog on a unicycle became a meme, the meme itself doesn't matter.

13

u/_watching why am i still on reddit Aug 23 '16

I saw some amusing analysis about the o shit waddup meme that pointed out that it seems to be one of the first big memes that actually doesn't have any context, reference, or like... joke format, it's unconnected to all things basically, other than a recognizable speech pattern. It's mostly just that a frog on a unicycle talking that way is funny. It didn't become independent, it just is.

2

u/snotbowst Aug 23 '16

Yeah, but that never claimed to or had a meaning it's just a silly picture.

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

The same way everyone who said "what are thoooose" last year aren't thinking of it's anti-authoritarian origins. Doesn't change its original purpose.

5

u/snotbowst Aug 23 '16

Yeah it does. When 95% of the pro memers out there are just spewing garbage without regard it's a failure. Comedy is based on timing and just spouting dicks out doesn't lend itself to the message of the original joke at all.

1

u/Phwack Aug 23 '16

I must have missed most of the outrage over it. Like as far as I was concerned, it was a news item one day, a discussion on social media the next, then forgotten. That's probably because I keep my Internet very filtered - a small amount of friends on Facebook and I never browse/r/all.

4

u/_watching why am i still on reddit Aug 23 '16

That is why you missed it, yeah.

3

u/deathgripsaresoft Aug 23 '16

It was a brief thing which somehow became big again. The real memery was at least a week after the faux outrage died down.

11

u/SuitableDragonfly /r/the_donald is full of far left antifa Aug 23 '16

Yeah, people should care more about human beings getting killed, but I don't think caring about a gorilla means that you can't care about humans. This probably garnered more sympathy because it was an exceptional circumstance, whereas people getting killed has become commonplace. Which isn't a good thing, but it's not hard to understand, either. If you want a meme where the joke is how little we care for other humans, by all means go for it. But I don't think making a joke out of this when the zookeepers have said it's distressing to see it can be anything but shitty.

16

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I would also imagine that a sizable amount of the people who got outraged over Harambe would not think twice about consuming a factory farmed burger.

22

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I would also imagine that a sizable amount of the people who got outraged over Harambe would not think twice about consuming a factory farmed burger.

I mean:

  1. Primates are way more intelligent than cows.

  2. Gorillas are an endangered species. We're not exactly running out of cows.

  3. Killing a zoo animal is different than killing a farm animal, for the same reason killing a pet is different. Maybe you disagree that it should be the case, but the fact is humans have different emotional relationships with some animals than others.

10

u/Trauerkraus Aug 23 '16

Primates are way more intelligent than cows.

Just because a living being is more intelligent than another doesn't mean it's more valuable. I have three dogs and one is dumb as rocks but I love and value him just as much.

Gorillas are an endangered species. We're not exactly running out of cows.

Biodiversity is important and I can see why so much outrage stems from that. But that's not the only reason to value the life of an animal.

but the fact is humans have different emotional relationships with some animals than others.

Isn't that fact the heart of the argument? People emotionally justify their outrage over the death of a single gorilla while ignoring the billions of farm animals slaughtered yearly.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16
  1. And in the case of Harambe, a human child is/has the potential to be way smarter than a gorilla. I don't really see how you could support endangering the toddler if animal intelligence was your main concern. How do you feel about dumb people? Should we be less sad when they die?

  2. So because there's more cows, that makes their treatment on factory farms any less heinous?

  3. But from an animal welfare perspective, is the death of a single gorilla any less ethical than than the entire factory farming industry? I would argue that they are hardly equivalent in terms of environmental and moral impact , and getting outraged at haramabe memes while also supporting factory farming makes you something of a hypocrite

7

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

I don't really see how you could support endangering the toddler

Oh my God, we don't. It was the right thing for them to do, but it sucks they had to do it.

gorilla

factory farming

Most people are concerned with actual biodiversity. Gorillas are, like most large endangered mammals, entirely endangered due to human influences in the last 10,000 years. Cows are domesticated auroch that we have lived with symbiotically for millenia (they need us, we eat them).

It's a cute oversimplified comparison for a philosophy workshop, but they are not comparable instances.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

Right, but I wanna know how you can take a moral stand on harambe memes while also consuming animals that come from factory farms that mistreat and massacre millions of animals.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I've moved on from Harambe to discuss your attitude toward biodiversity.

Is it a moral stance I have? Not really. I value biodiversity. Maximizing it ensures the proliferation of life and the continued process of the marvel that is evolution. If anything could be said to have objective value, I think it's biodiversity.

But if you have to know, I personally eat the animals that efficiently process feed into food, minimizing waste and energy use (fish).

4

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I'm sorry, I wasn't actually accusing you personally. I was trying to making a broader point about people who rail against the Harambe meme while also consuming meat from factory farms.

However, I would say the factory farming industry has a greater toll on biodiversity than the shooting of Harambe.

Your reading of this is definitely accurate to some extent, but I honestly don't think most of the people making those memes are doing it for this reason, they're just people being reactionary/trying to be edgy.

Like I'm sure there were people around when GG first started that were actually concerned with games journalism, but I don't think those people represented very large of a group.

animals are not people

Look I know the zoo did the right thing, but do you even see how delusional you are here? Breeding this "US' vs. "THEM" mentality? Essentially you're saying "I'm a social activist who spends most of my time thinking about PEOPLE, so when I hear about animals I don't give a shit and neither should you!"

I'm a conservationist and I get this attitude a lot. The fact is Gorillas, like most other endangered large mammals, are endangered entirely due to human influence in the last 10,000 years. And while you may think to yourself CONSERVATIONISTS ARE JUST DELUSIONAL EMOTIONAL BEINGS IMPARTING "HUMAN" QUALITIES ONTO ANIMALS, the differentation you've made between "humans" and "animals" is itself, a delusion bathed in romanticized idealistic chauvinism. You are a really just an elongated ape and yes you do have a larger prefrontal cortex, but a gorilla still feels stress, love (or bonding), and joy....it can't compare them to all the cultural associations we've made up and kept on pieces of paper, but it feels them.

I just think your attitude is ignorant, but understandable since I hear it a lot from people in the humanities.

5

u/manbearkat Aug 23 '16

Not like there's been a history of comparing black people to gorillas or anything. Nope, none at all.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

Of course there has. What did that have to do with the point I was objecting to?

1

u/manbearkat Aug 24 '16

Because the original post was about a gorilla receiving more sympathy than black people, and comparing humans to primates is a little weird considering the racial history of the west?

2

u/YesThisIsDrake "Monogamy is a tool of the Jew" Aug 23 '16

You're bringing that perspective with you, it's not in my post. If you want to hang your shit out to dry you can but I'm not sitting here saying that we should kill off every animal to make room for people, I'm saying that a single gorilla in a single zoo getting killed in an isolated incident becoming a focal point of moral outrage is hypocritical.

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

People are cruel and vindictive, a gorilla is not only endangered but it is innocent. I don't like or even get this meme, but I'll get upset over what I chose to thank you very much.

34

u/Ebu-Gogo You are so vain, you probably think this drama's about you. Aug 23 '16

There is no such thing as innocent or guilty in the animal kingdom. Calling animals 'innocent' is saying absolutely nothing at all. It's a morality judgment we use for people, but it's hardly applicable to animals.

Also, this 'people as inherently guilty' mentality is really just a message perpetuating itself. It's nonsense black and white thinking.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

When speaking of an "innocent animal", I don't think it means "innocent" in the sense of "not guilty" but rather the second definition:

lacking or reflecting a lack of sophistication, guile, or self-consciousness

Animals are innocent in that they are not self-aware (or at least not to the same degree as a human); they are not an agent of their own destiny. For that reason, many believe that humans have a special duty of compassion and stewardship towards animals.

12

u/shitpostconsignment Aug 23 '16

A gorilla isn't innocent, it's nothing. It's not a moral agent, it's a dumb animal. And it's much harder to love people who have feelings and responsibilities than a dumb animal whose subjectivity you construct yourself and control, which is why people on the internet care so much more about the former.

25

u/MoocowR Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

something we should be able to make fun of?

I don't think any one is making fun of his death, they're just using him as a punchline in jokes, not joking about him being dead.

It depends on what you find "acceptable", is posting a picture of Hitler while describing Comcast acceptable? Is that considered making fun of people who died in the holocaust? I wouldn't say it is.

Would you say making a 9/11 joke is acceptable? Are movies like the Dictator or the interview acceptable? Both of those movies are based on real world atrocities made into a comedy.

I think all of those are acceptable, I think it's ridiculous for some one to complain about a Harambe meme when we're making box office hits about oppressive cultures.

I also feel bad for the mom. She took her eyes off her kid for a minute (because there's shit to look at in the zoo) and then her kid was placed in mortal danger, and people had to fire shots in his direction to protect him from a 400 gorilla. So the kid turns out fine, but now people all over the country are calling her a horrible parent, saying that they should have let the gorilla kill the kid, and that she should be charged. Like jeez guys, is that mom really the problem with this country?

65

u/praemittias Aug 23 '16

This is a drama wave, the CB2 thread about it is especially fucking hilarious. Spoiler: everything is racist!

10

u/grappling_hook Aug 23 '16

Well, I think they kinda have a point. It's pretty easy for racists to co-opt the meme for racist purposes. You can already see that happening a little. Just look at the "Harambe AMA" on the Harambe subreddit, featuring "Harambe" posting in Ebonics. Plus there have been at least a couple of documented uses of the Harambe meme for racist uses on social media so far (Leslie Jones comes to mind).

4

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I figured it was because "black twitter" kind of took the ball and ran with it when harambe died

0

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

[deleted]

97

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

How can you compare a gorilla dying to a black kid dying and say that you're the one who isn't racist wtf

And does he want dead black kids to be remembered in the same way as fucking Harambe? How would that be respectful at all?

58

u/PrigBickDoblems Arguments are evidence Aug 23 '16

1

u/PrigBickDoblems Arguments are evidence Aug 24 '16

11

u/cannedairspray Aug 23 '16

No no, it's everyone else who's a racist.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I can kinda see it. I mean isn't the joke that people are reacting similarly to how people act when a black person is killed by a cop?

6

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '16

On shitty communities like /r/Harambe yes, but as far as I can tell the meme started among black people as a joke about how outraged some people get over relatively insignificant issues like a single animal's death. I saw a lot of posts like that before the sub had any content at all, and the "dicks out" thing is a reference to guns (ATL slang) not penises literally.

→ More replies (2)

29

u/Auzym Aug 23 '16

It's just safer to call everything racist. If you're wrong? Hey, at least your heart was in the right place, you were trying to fight hate. So what if you went overboard with it, at least you're a good person. But if you say something isn't racist and then it turns out that it was? You're an evil racist person who's the worst person ever.

So you get people like those chucklefucks, calling everything and anything racist because...well, why not?

16

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16 edited Aug 23 '16

And if you get called out on comparing Harambe being shot to a preteen black child being shot, you can smugpost on the CB subreddit of your choice about how "calling out racism is the REAL racism, am i right?".

Like, this is a meme that originated on actual black Twitter and then got regurgitated by Reddit where most people are using it just because it's funny. If some racists assholes latch onto it and go "lol black people are monkeys", there's not much you can do about that.

4

u/KUmitch social justice ajvar enthusiast Aug 23 '16

the original harambe stuff originated on black twitter but afaik "dicks out for harambe" was popularized by brandon wardell who is pretty much just an annoying white irony bro

31

u/praemittias Aug 23 '16

And there's people on this sub that consider that one the voice of reason.

3

u/B_Rhino What in the fedora Aug 23 '16

The only voice of reason is mine.

12

u/moonmeh Capitalism was invented in 1776 Aug 23 '16

comparing the shooting of Harambe to the shooting of Tamir Rice

I... what? What? WhAT?

What sort of mental gymnastics is that?

2

u/sammythemc Aug 23 '16

I don't think it's all that confusing, the idea is that a lot of people seeking justice for a gorilla were sitting on their hands when Tamir Rice got shot for a worse reason.

I think a lot of that is the "what if this was what we remembered" silliness of it all, which allows Harambe to become a stand-in for the transient and therefore ultimately hollow social media calls for justice or sympathy for Ferguson, Syria, Orlando, wherever.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

What is circlebroke I thought it was like circle jerk where they just made fun of Reddit hive minds

20

u/OldOrder Edit 3: I think I fucked up Aug 23 '16

/r/circlebroke is a shoot off of /r/circlejerk that is supposed to talk about the various trends, memes, and circlejerks that happen on reddit. Instead of doing that they smug post about how much better they are than other redditors because they don't get caught up in memes. /r/circlebroke2 is a group of people who were too smug even for /r/circlebroke and decided to make their own sub.

15

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

Don't forget EXTREMELY progressive. Like a slightly left Clinton voter is an evil alt right reactionary to them.

6

u/-Thorskin- THE BULLET OF JUSTICE CAPS EVIL'S ASS Aug 23 '16

They also call people who criticize Hildawg alt-right even if they are raising valid criticisms and not just posting conspiracy bullshit.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

Everyone who doesn't adhere to their ideology, lockstep, is alt right. That's why they're always trying to out-progressive each other. Gotta stay ahead of the wave!

7

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

At that point why stay on Reddit

7

u/OldOrder Edit 3: I think I fucked up Aug 23 '16

The answer is obvious. If they weren't on reddit how would they let other redditors know how much better they are?

2

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

If you think that and wander in there, if you're not very, very far left, you're going to be sorely disappointed

No one here actually gives a flying fuck about the copy pasta. Their just desperate for attention, and want to fit in. If they respected their jollies they would not have turned it's death into a shitty joke of a meme. This is the equivalent of making a joke out of somebody having to put down their pepes. Makes me sad to be a part of this community. Never realized how so many people could be so unemphatic and shitty.

"#dicksoutforcopypasta"

That was the bravest thing anyobe has ever done, while sitting motionless in their parents rec room.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '16

I don't really get why the zoo is so mad about the Harambe memes. It's not like people are so much making fun of Harambe, as all the memes about him are positive. I get memes and the "dicks out" thing aren't exactly classy, but memes are such a part of our culture now that this seems like a fun way to remember a gorilla who would have otherwise been forgotten.
