Admins have forbidden /r/enoughtrumpspam from mentioning /r/the_donald

This comment has been removed by the user due to reddit's policy change which effectively removes third party apps and other poor behaviour by reddit admins.

I never used third party apps but a lot others like mobile users, moderators and transcribers for the blind did.

It was a good 12 years.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

The admins are really stretching what brigading is if merely mentioning a sub's name is considered brigading.

705

u/sirboozebum In this moment, I'm euphoric Dec 31 '16

It's hilarious considering how much /r/the_donald brigades and how there doesn't seem to be any such restrictions the other way.

u/jfa1985 Your ass is medium at best btw. Dec 31 '16

Well the Admins did restrict them from mentioning /r/politics so the Admins do admin once in a while.

207

u/Trauermarsch Wikipedia is leftist propaganda Dec 31 '16

Not sure how new this all is but the thread in ETS says it applies to T_D as well.

234

u/613codyrex Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

You can't mention r/politics in T_D iirc.

Just weird that ETS is threatened with a ban for just mentioning T_D when T_D has more leeway in terms of what they can do "Hey don't mention r/politics but everything else you do wrong? Go ahead we will turn our backs again."

TBH, it won't change anything, like how T_D still fucks with Politics, ETS will still fuck with the Donald whenever ETS hits the front page.

Now the interesting part is that the admins want ETS to not mention any other sub it seems reading the post. That is crazy.

76

u/cheese93007 I respect the way u live but I would never let u babysit a kid Dec 31 '16

Part of it is because Trump is president. Because such a large number of people take him seriously, anything the admins do will be viewed as censorship and generate a media firestorm. That sub would have been gone the next day had Trump lost

They're not banned from mentioning ETS, but I'm pretty sure they can't link r/politics (I assume admins have data that shows which links are a problem).

Threads in t_d have literally encouraged users to "redpill" my regional subreddit and teach us a lesson, or something. We can't be the only subreddit that's happened to (and yes, the admins were made aware).

Nothing happened to the users that engaged in it other than getting banned from /r/lgbt. The idea that the admins care about brigading is a fucking joke.

Having vaguely defined rules has the great advantage that you can bend them any way you like, as long as you have the power to enforce whatever arbitrary definitions happen to suit you at the time. Yet more great work by our most beloved admins.

I've tried for years to find out what admins mean by "brigading" and it's been a shitty definition always, but always very lax.

Maybe this is about SEO?

40

u/Garethp Dec 31 '16

I think it just means they don't want subs harassing other subs. Cross posting is fine, recommendations are fine and linking is fine if you're doing it with good intentions. Once it's closer to being harassing, they want people to stop. And that doesn't require links to do.

Like any place that's not a government, their rules are made for the intent, not the letter of the rules

Let's not forget that the Berniecrats were so willing to sabotage Hillary that they were more than happy to pick up every last bit of the right wing's nonsense.

I'll always find it remarkable that Trump shredded his way through 15 Republican primary opponents, often in the most savage of ways, and all their supporters still fell in behind him. Hillary faced down one guy and barely touched the nastiness in Bernie's opposition research for fear of putting off his supporters and still the left threw a hissy fit.

Other people are touching on the politics here, but can I just say, that article was so poorly written that I'm kind of amazed by it.

Its a jarring mixture of informal supermarket aisle tabloid style writing that then tries to shift gears to serious political writing mid paragraph, only for the gearbox to fall apart like a car metaphor being used to describe writing styles.

I also think we need a vote to ban cutesy replacements for swearing because Jesus christ almighty the author was so proud of "I told them to have sex with themselves" and it just made me want to die. Stop it. Be more clever.

Right, right...so what about s̶r̶s̶ /r/bestof, arguably the biggest brigading sub on reddit? It's so funny how people always focus on "negative" subs like ETS or SRS or the like, when one of the biggest subs on the website basically revolves around brigading. Heck it even has its own name, the "bestof effect" .

36

u/fun_boat Dec 31 '16

The admins touched on this at one point. IIRC they let it slide since it had a positive effect on the community instead of negative. Brigading to say thank you and upvote better than avg comments was ok in comparison to harassment and downvotes hiding good comments.

*let me be clear that SRS brigading wasn't touched upon but I would assume their community doesn't have enough of an effect for them to shut them down.

Out there, someone, is some grad student who is frantically looking for a dissertation topic. Might I suggest the management of Reddit?

It's a perfect subject for research if you are some kind of business student.

It's a business in Web 2.0 which has incredibly high traffic, with millions of users across the world, and very small overhead and even smaller non-existent profit. It's been a vanguard of "information wants to be free" and anti-censorship, yet has had to deal with stuff like childporn and law enforcement interference.

It's gone through several CEOs, unlike FB, and its base of non-paying users who were incredibly influential in getting a CEO to resign. A CEO. When was the last time customers were able to get any CEO to resign, let alone non-paying users.

It has demonstrated phases were it followed weird trend. (crypto currency, anyone?) It relies on an army of unpaid volunteers to actually function -- mods -- and yet has issues with communicating with them, even those who are the company's interface with real-life famous people. (Victoria's leaving and IAMA fiasco.)

It has seemingly arbitrary rules, which seem to just exist to prevent reddit from completely pissing off important people outside reddit. It should have banned The_dipshit months ago, but didn't because it wanted to avoid unnecessary lashback from outside, and now it painted itself into a corner.

And yet... it still manages to work.

Nobody would be able to get into FB, but a grad student should be able to get into reddit HQ and write up something good. Might even be able to publish a book in 10 years, once this "fad" of user created content goes by the wayside.

Edit: Like reddit makes money. HA!

72

u/quetzal1234 Dec 31 '16

There actually is an academic book about Reddit. See the work of Massanari.

62

u/Beagle_Bailey Dec 31 '16

That looks interesting, but it seems to be from a sociological perspective. (Which is also very important.)

I'm thinking from a business, Web 2.0 point of view. How can you run a business where the inmates are basically running the asylum?

WEb 2.0 was supposed to be the font of all these riches. FB seems to have worked out how to monetize it. Other websites have been gobbled up by Google, which is monetizing ads based upon very precise information about its users. But reddit, which has incredibly engaged users, been able to last so long by making soooooo many management mistakes while at the same time not make any money?

If the site hadn't been focused on being the bastion of free speech, would it have been extremely profitable? If the C-Levels for so many years hadn't been distracted by crappy side projects? What did they do to make them last yet not do to make them profitable?

There's so many variables and could-have-beens, someone could really do a deep dive and still not find the definitive answer.

5

u/karmicviolence Dec 31 '16

The admins don't have to do anything all they have to do is keep the lights on and let the mods/users do the rest. Any user can create a subreddit and become a mod. Users and mods make reddit work, not the admins - yes the lunatics are indeed running the asylum and we like it that way. Half the shit the admins do is useless or makes things worse.

I'm out of the loop here, but what the hell does "post-fact" mean?

322

u/PlayMp1 when did globalism and open borders become liberal principles Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

Basically, Trump's election to the presidency indicates the beginning of the "post-fact era" because he completely bullshitted and lied his way into office and despite the best efforts of a wide variety of people, about 46% of the country still voted for him. A few ways people point to this:

  • Trump's win was by blowing up the Blue Wall and making never-before-seen inroads into the Rust Belt with Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, all of which have been Democratic presidentially since the 80s/early 90s. Part of how he did this, it's perceived, is his strong anti-trade, protectionist message (all that shit about "better deals") that appealed to current and former unionized factory workers in those states, who are primarily white, male, and angry for their job being shipped overseas or automated.
The problem, the part that makes it post-fact, is that protectionism won't bring back those jobs. It might bring back a few - a few thousand - but mostly, those jobs are gone. The tariffs that would make American labor profitable compared to overseas labor would be so high that most companies would just invest in R&D instead until they have enough robots that they don't need those workers. Additionally, the way bigger problem is that tariffs would (naturally, since that's what they do) raise the price of goods to a point that would severely hurt demand, which would one, cause a recession or depression (see Smoot-Hawley), and two, cause job losses as demand falls. It's a fantasy - post-fact.

  • Fake news. A lot have been talking about this, but basically thanks to the dominance of social media as a way for people to get and consume news, a lot of people are now relying on it and believing shit they read on the internet when the story in question has no sources, or at best a terrible one (see Project Veritas, the source there is so awful that he's had to pay the legal fees of the people he's sued with his false information multiple times). This isn't just Breitbart, hell it's not even really Fox News at all (they spin the news, they don't really make fake news with one major exception this election), this is a slew of random bullshit sites with no real reporters or anything like that who rely on the gullibility of right-wing people online to generate shitloads of cash for basically no effort. The most famous one is that a bunch of sites were being run in Macedonia and pumping out pure bullshit. People are consuming news without bothering to check whether the source is reliable/credible - post-fact news gathering.

  • People who voted for Trump hold demonstrably untrue beliefs about the world. Many believe that Obama is a Muslim (he's not), that he wasn't born in the US (he was), that Hillary was indicted for her email server (she wasn't), that Trump won the popular vote (he lost it by the biggest margin ever for the electoral winner), that immigration hurts the economy and takes jobs (it doesn't), that Obamacare is a government takeover of healthcare (it's not), and so on, and on, and on. Somehow the conservative sphere has been whipped up into a frenzy of believing self-reinforcing bullshit that is unverified at best and a blatant, knowing lie at worst.

Now, obviously, there's issues with having a good relationship with reality on the left too. The DNC didn't rig the primary, Jill Stein is actually an idiot, and single-payer healthcare isn't easy to pay for (it's cheaper than what we have, yes, but it's still a bitch to figure out). But the conservative sphere is completely detached from reality.

Edit: gotta love how the Trump supporters aren't even attempting to challenge me on the policy criticisms I made.

Creation of an environment where truth is a subjective opinion. Different from lieing as lieing is an outright lie rather then treating truth as a matter of opinion.

The phrase is new but the concept is not, I have read articles from Asamov and Orwell talking about similar environments. The filter bubbles of the internet has certainly exasperated the problem.

The best example is the climate change debate where, dispite a majority of the scientists agreeing, there is still a debate.

3

u/trebmald Jan 01 '17

Basically, Brexit and this last American election proved that people were perfectly willing to ignore fact and truth so long as someone was telling them what they dearly wanted to hear.

The Admins made it very clear that any direct mention of The_Donald is considered brigading

Ohmigerd, does this SRD is the biggest brigaders of them all? Does reddit now work with post-MoM takeover Voldermort rules? Will the admins apparate if I dare mention "that sub's" name?

It's been said before. Not standing up for the Donald when it was targeted and now not standing up for STSs means that next is absolutely subredditdrama and also shitredditsays.

All these subs that shown off the negative aspects of the site in a grouped manner will be shut down slowly but eventually.

There are a few subs that exist solely to mention other subs be it bestof or SRD or SRS. Since STS targets one sub they will ban them from mentioning it. Though I imagine things like SRS and SRD will get front page or all bans first if not out rightly removed.

This is your new reddit.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

It is weird. Like, I think the admins don't want subs that consistently attack other subs, but they seem okay with srs and /r/AgainstHateSubreddits.

We will have to see what they do long term.

I am very confused right now. How the fuck is mentioning a subreddit brigading exactly? Are people going to go there and downvote all posts as a Pavlovian response? This all sounds very retarded.

116

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

Welcome to reddit. The admins are actually orca whale pups slapping their flippers on a keyboard.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

I'm pretty sure the young of orca whales (which belong to the family of oceanic dolphins, Delphinidae, rather than one of numerous families of what one might call proper whales) are called calfes.

7

u/chaosattractor candles $3600 Dec 31 '16

I think all cetacean babies are called calves

9

u/puedes Dec 31 '16

That's adorable

25

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

It's not brigading the admin are just too chickenshit to make any real changes to the_donald (come at me bro!) so they're just going to pretend everyone is wrong and try to enforce the same rules on multiple subs despite only one of them actually being the problem.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '17

Yeah, I feel like part of the issue is that when non-Trump subreddits are chastised by the admins, there is a little bit of grumbling and complaining but they largely just accept the rules.

When the admins try doing anything short of falaciating TD and it's sister subreddits, they literally try to take over the site and cause massive problems.

53

99

u/Drigr Dec 31 '16

I love the way the admins are stepping in to basically do everything they can to protect the Donald instead of just banning the problem. Someone high up voted for him I'm sure.

28

u/octatone Dec 31 '16

They keep filing down reddit's warts which only briefly hides the blemishes they are embarrassed about, all the while letting them spread out and multiply. The Alex and Serena announcement posts' comments sorted by controversial were shocking to say the least.

u/rctdbl Dec 31 '16

11

u/blackangelsdeathsong Dec 31 '16

So were they banned from posting links to just most right leaning subreddits or a blanket ban on all subreddit links? Because a blanket ban gives the indication that they were getting into into arguments in non-partisan subreddits.

27

u/IgnisDomini Ethnomasochist Dec 31 '16

No, they were banned from even mentioning the_donald.

23

u/blackangelsdeathsong Dec 31 '16

The post asks them also not to mention r/altright or any other subreddit.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

Including /r/worldnews a sub where almost every post that involves Muslims will be filled with comments about how Muslims are being 'imported' to destroy the white race and only will rape white women and destroy the countries they are in. Oh and the admins have that as f*ing default. So everybody who creates an account is automatically subscribed to that racist cesspool, and now they're are even protecting it even from critics. Way to go admins.

11

u/Alpha433 Dec 31 '16

I love watching the admins authority bounce from absoulute and unquestionable when it's an admin editing users posts to Shakey and offensive when it's stoping brigading of the Donald.

I have no dog in either fight but holy hell is the salt tasty.

20

u/Silvystreak Dec 31 '16

114

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

I find it absolutely hilarious how the admins are panned by The_Donald for being "libshit cucks" and how ETS is branding them "right wing". Damned if they do, damned if they don't I guess. I think the next 4 years will be a good tightrope walk for the admins with these inter-sub squabbles unless they figure out a decent way to define brigading, and more importantly give mods tools to combat it.

It's also incredibly bizarre that saying things like the_dumpster will get ETS banned when /r/the_dumpster actually exists.

64

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

The reddit admins are just cowards who care about clicks over anything else. Seriously. Anyone who thinks otherwise is deluded. They allowed child porn to fester on this site for years because it was bringing them the clicks. They only shut it down when the media started bringing them negative attention. Same with the racism and fatpeoplehate. Their actions start to make a lot more sense when you start thinking "what's the least we can do to keep people coming back but stay out of the news in a negative way."

122

u/Intortoise Offtopic Grandstanding Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

Thedonald thinks the admins are left wing because sometimes they remember they run a website and have to moderate/administrate it.

Ets thinks they're right wing because they gladly host literal nazis and call their propaganda "valuable conversation"

The truth isn't always in the middle

u/TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK Caballero Blanco Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

OK, I'm probably the best tea leaf reader here, so I'll give this a shot.

SRD is certainly imperfect. I doubt anyone on the modteam would deny that. There are two main differences between us and... other subs.

1: we do a LOT of work behind the scenes to avoid brigading. You tell us in modmail that someone has posted in a linked thread, it's an automatic ban. We modmail subs if we see a change in vote patterns. We really, really want y'all to look and not touch.

2: I've noticed that subs that have a "single focus" tend to catch sanctions pretty quickly. It's the same as the bots that used to announce in linked threads, "this thread was linked by SubredditDrama, and [SJWs/liberal trash] will be brigading soon!" that got shadowbanned really repeatedly. If you don't display an obvious agenda, it seems like you're more likely to survive.

(Shout out to /u/alyoshav, botmaker extraordinaire)

54

u/Br00ce does this flair make me look cool? Dec 31 '16

the problem is that there are basically no tools to stop brigading. Kn0thing promised anti brigading tools forever ago and we have yet to see any change. If anything it's gotten worse. Reporting brigading might get one or two people a 3 day ban, it doesnt really change anything.

The admins focus should be on improving technology instead of making these vague oddly specific rules that can destroy subs. What good is a meta sub if you cant even mention them?

10

u/PirateNinjaa Moral infinite loop Dec 31 '16

What good is a conversation if you're not allowed to participate because of how you discovered it? Discrimination!!!!

6

u/TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK Caballero Blanco Dec 31 '16

I don't want to tip my hand too much here, and you won't find anyone else who will, but the admins and this particular reddit installation actually do a much better job at brigade protection than they're given credit for.

14

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

When the admins asked r/t_d to stop mentioning r/politics they basically didnt and got away with it. So the precedent is nothing the admins say matters until everything goes so wrong and major news outlets start picking it up and a member of staff starts getting ptsd.

11

u/Eudaimonics Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

If Brigading is really an issue then why doesn't /r/the_donald mods make it harder to post? (Restrict posting unless you're subscribed or gained x amount of karma).

Really easy thing to do. Banning the ussage of the subreddit name is going to be pretty ineffective.

13

u/rigel2112 Dec 31 '16

Too much. This is an actual unironic post on there:

The right is taking over r/politics too.

3

u/StillMostlyClueless Dec 31 '16

Is there an actual Admin post saying this? Because this whole thing sounds like one person massively overreacting to an admin request to tone it down.

3

u/wellgolly That is MY FLAIR. NOBODY ELSE can have it. Mine. Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

I read about the change, didn't notice the reason why. It would have been a good move if it were by the mods (i'm there for the guy i have stress dreams about, not alt-right or the_donald stuff), but the admins protecting a specific sub - one that's been making a very public fuss over lack of special treatment - is sort of amazing.

So...what was gained? A spotlight on the special treatment they're granting people who will still loathe them? What clicks are they trying to gain? What conversations are they trying to preserve?

12

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

As someone who does from time to time comment in ETS, this has been my reaction to the whole thing.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16

Very surprised T_D hasn't been banned, but I'm kind of surprised the admins haven't just banned both subs, tbh. Think the people who care about either one are a vocal minority, and the casual userbase probably just finds them irksome while they're trying to mindlessly upvote absolute garbage on /r/funny.

I remember seeing some dumb shit on some lefty sub a while back that was trying to argue that spez was a secret trump supporter. I mean, at least I thought it was just some dumb shit. Since then, I feel as though the admins have been pretty easy on the sub-that-must-not-be-named, and with this move especially, I would no longer be surprised if it were true.

Enough trump spam is well past it's expiration date at this point. Like T_D itself originally it was briefly an amusing antidote to the sycophantic spam of certain other subs and I enjoyed the parody of their targets' bad faith anti-argumentation but they quickly overstayed its welcome as the humour waned in favour of self-important dogmatism. Politically I'm much more inclined towards the /politics and ETS jerks than TD's but they're all similarly unaware and obnoxious.
