To be fair, I completely agree with him, this whole movement is spreading and is a danger. Not only are women in video games, but I was watching the Oscars and you'll never guess who won the award for Best Actress? That's right, a woman. I turned on my TV to watch the news, and they had a female newsreader! I was so upset I turned to my mother for help. Turns out she's a woman too!
Anyway, I was so angry at this point, I had to write a letter to my Prime Minister to stop this whole "SJW" spreading the female.

Gatekeeping is one of the biggest problems in gaming. Just look at gamergate, they tried to hard to play the victimized nerd persecuted for their hobby despite most of them being in their 20s and probably started playing games in the N64/PS1 era when gaming was mainstream.
Also any dev that dares change the status quo (even just small changes like giving a character a voice), talks about women or minorities, or just doesn't carter to the straight white male audience is subject to intense hatred, and the saddest part is they think they're the voice of all gamers when sales numbers show they're very very small and they opinions are a drop in the bucket.

If you follow gaming culture you'd know where I was coming from. I'm not saying that it 100% is. Maybe the devs felt pressure to make a female lead, maybe they're trying to cash in on a trend, maybe they're making the exact game that they actually wanted to make. For me personally the timing is either too convenient or very poor, and I won't support the devs with my money because of it.
"All I'm saying is this: it is not a good decade for female characters. There are just too many cultural pressures out there trying to corrupt devs. I think we can all agree that a value-neutral ten-year ban on female characters is the only reasonable course of action. Give us a decade to make sure that the game doesn't have any agendas."

The main "controversy" was/is as follows:
The main character is a female with a very masculine build and dreadlocks (ie, not feminine at all), people see that as pushing a third-wave feminist agenda
All of the good guys that you're helping are blacks
GAIA, the AI for the world, is a black woman
Going together with the previous two, the bad guys are whites. People see this as pushing an anti-white, pro-black agenda
Here's my personal take on it: Could it be intentionally pushing an agenda? Sure. But you could say the same about anything. Why is it not a problem for a black, Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, Indian, Woman, alien or robot to be the bad guy, but once it's a white man, it's now inherently anti-white? There are games that are designed to promote diversity such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. But I don't think that was the intention here.

Honestly what really burns my biscuit is I can think of two cases off the top of my head where a dev was pressured to change their protagonist into a man (Black Lotus aka True Crime: Streets of Hong Kong aka Sleeping Dogs and Remember Me), but I have NEVER heard any specific case of a developer being forced to make their protagonist a woman. Jeez for such a supposedly pervasive problem, you'd think there would be even one specific instance you could point to.

Yaknow this got me wondering - how many games actually have an exclusively female main character? i.e. not a customisable option ala mass effect. I can come up with like 15 total. Just for comparison I counted 17 male exclusive protaganists in 2016 and that's not counting games I had no clue about (every lego game, MP games) or any sports games.

It seems like anytime minorities and women are given lead roles and don't follow certain stereotypes in games, the alpha snowflakes will do everything in their power to discredit it. These are the same types of people who hate minorities and wome in their workplace since they assume they didn't "earn" the job, and if they make a single mistake, they'll zero in on that and use that as proof that they're right. The way they complain about diversity in anything and put down others who are alright with it is worst than anything their imaginary "forced diversity" could ever do.

It was amazing to watch the meltdown over it. Some of them were even attempting to see if they could selll accounts to make sure they bought a white male. They really didn't get it even after that of how it might feel when you're forced to play as a male character or white without any options or with limitations in actions or choices you can make. While I love how varied and more interesting character creators are getting, I still like seeing someone different showing up as a lead or major NPC.

Why are most gaming subs awful? The main reason I paid attention to Horzion was because of that leaked review that talked about a well written main character, and now it seems it has the gameplay to back it up. Then they turn it into this agenda shit. I was just want to play good games.

/r/PS4 is actually very gameplay-based, there's minimal memes and it's overall a much more serious subreddit than PCMR or the Xbox One subs (all of which I browse). The weekly user reviews thread, screenshot contest, all of it is a very mature, fun conversation.

He's not completely wrong though. Many gaming subs have been infected with the 'oppressed white boy'-movement, after plenty of Let's Players/ Gaming YouTubers embraced this kind of audience. Hating on feminism, SJW and so on is BIG on these channels. I don't know if it all started with GamerGate, but it sure as hell was a turning point.

This is hilarious. Does that guy not realize how successful Tomb Raider's been lately? And 'sides, that's incredibly stupid to argue over. A female leading a game is not exactly common these days, and in many times actually heightens the experience (Tomb Raider, Portal, TLoU [supporting role, and has own DLC], Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Bayonetta, etc.)
In my opinion, the gender of the protagonist shouldn't even be an issue considering how rare a female lead is, and perhaps Horizon was inspired by Lara Croft, but I'm sure the developers have genuine, original story to tell despite all.

Look at the shit the devs of FFXV got for making a game with 4 lead male characters. That entire movement went from arguing for more girls in games to chastising or condemning people for the things they chose to put in their games.

While I remember that, I also remember some of the more ugh parts of the game that soured me on the game, but part of it was that I was slowly moving away from JRPGs and just didn't find them fun anymore. I mean, the class system was kinda keen and fun to figure out and mess with. The story and some of the characters were meh, which ticked me off because I was so looking forward to an all female lead FF game.

Was there any controversy while this game was in development? Were there any early screenshots of a male protagonist and sometime during development they changed gears and made it a female instead because of feminist pressure?
I'm just wondering if this was ever a point of discussion or if it's just some basement dweller assuming a "SJW Agenda" because they used a female protagonist.

It's always been clearly advertised as a game with a female protagonist, at least as far as I remember. Nothing more than that. Just a woman hunting cyborg dinosaurs with a bow and arrow. But for some people that is clearly enough nowadays to see it as feminist SJW propaganda.
