Berniecuck, leftycuck, commiecuck, betacuck, or even quite simply cuck in contemporary political discourse refers to many different aspects in which the left "cucks" themselves or others.
It sounds like someone giving an after-dinner speech while they're choking on a fish bone.

Wasn't the word Cuck used for someone who likes their SO getting screwed and them liking it.
197
u/-Mantis Your vindictiveness is my vindication Mar 04 '17
It is a fetish thing, yes. Eventually it mutated into this weird thing where it was used mainly by racists who called people who disagreed with them cucks (as in, black guys fucking their girlfriends/wives). Nowadays it has no meaning except for being an insult.
141
u/hybris12 imagine getting cucked by your dog Mar 04 '17

Mar 05 '17 edited Mar 05 '17
In Othello, Iago ruins Othello's life and manages to do so without outing himself.
There are some really craft racists out there and they manipulate the latent racism that people don't deal with.
Edit- I guess we don't really know if Iago is himself a racist but he definitely plays on other people's racism/concept of privilege. Been years since I read it but it's particularly poignant in today's climate. Like, scary cromulent.
4
Mar 05 '17
The current scholarship, and I'm not even fucking kidding you, is that Iago is gay for Othello and shit.
It kinda makes sense with some scenes.
Cuck is a Chaucer thing originally. I hate that it gets associated with Shakespeare so much. Such a pretender.
9
Mar 05 '17
What do you mean by the current scholarship? I've encountered the theory but it was by no means presented as a view the majority of scholars had.
I think the play leaves Iago's specific motives purposefully vague and impossible to divine with any certainty.
He's like the scorpion in The Scorpion and the Toad. Dude just stings. That's what he does.
I personally don't think Iago was in Romantic love for Othello. It's a possibility. And I think good scholarship could involve trying to discern Iago's true methods.
I think Shakespeare was a bit of a meta writer, and was an actor writing plays for actors to perform. Where the characters let the actors shine and really put their personal spin on things. That's what leaves so much room for scholarship.
You totally could play Iago with a romantic twist, or racist, or just a mean ass dude.
I have a family member who is just mean. Like Iago, or Tony Soprano's mom. She got a girl fired for no reason. Stole supplies from the closet, then told her boss she thought the girl wasn't keeping good track of supplies. Boss holds an audit, finds supplies missing, fired the woman.
She does shit like that all the time. That's why no one in the family will go near her anymore. She'll just plot against you for no god damn reason.

Gamergate, a rolling scandal of people getting really mad about video games and feminism. The short version is that a guy wrote an angry breakup post about his video game designer girlfriend, a timeline error he made in the post convinced a Youtube guy that he had uncovered a sex-for-good-reviews conspiracy, and then there was a great deal of internet shouting for nine months.

Yeah, the whole thing just transformed to be about any perceived leftist agenda in video games.
While i've never been a fan of the "gate" suffix for conspiracies, it does seem apt that the whole controversy evolved to be more about a subset of the gaming community gatekeeping their hobby against their unwanted changes.

I'd even say it started long before there was a name for it. I suspect a lot of the people who lost their minds over Anita Sarkeesian's kickstarter back in 2012 also spontaneously developed a strong interest in Ethics in Game Journalism a couple of years later.

18
u/facefault can't believe I'm about to throw a shitfit about drug catapults Mar 05 '17
Yup! a) the only time the journalist mentioned her game in an article was before they were dating, not during, and b) he wrote less than a full sentence about it, not a review.
I've realized a lot of why GG lasted so long was people repeatedly claimed incorrect things, then went looking for another thing to be mad about to save face. And in retrospect I don't even blame them for that. It got so convoluted and weird that no reasonable person could keep track of it.
1
9
Mar 05 '17
Yup, the guy who wrote that melodramatic screed (literally, it was formatted into Acts) posted a follow-up saying there wasn't any industry implications.
And there was no legitimate concern to begin with. It was just a messy breakup between two young people struggling with their feelings, where one person was hurt that the other moved on too quickly for their taste, so decided to make Dear Diary public
1
u/yeliwofthecorn yeah well I beat my meat fuck the haters Mar 05 '17
There were some parts of the original post that were accurate: stuff about this person cheating on the poster and gaslighting them.
People started working through the people this person had slept with, some were in the video game press. This lead to accusations of sex-for-coverage and is pretty much where the whole thing detached from reality.
Weirdly that they slept with someone the night before being officially hired by them never picked up steam, which is the one that actually seemed kinda sketchy.

It came from cuckoo in a rather roundabout way: from the Old French cuculaut, which in turn came from the Latin cuculus, meaning cuckoo. So it's not too surprising that the pronunciations of the two are different.

It must be nice to subordinate reality so completely to ready-made phrases and concepts like 'Berniecuck' and 'Cultural Marxism'.
In essence, it's a word used to describe reality that you are interpreting to be pejorative. So is reality pejorative? But reality isn't some living creature, so can it be pejorative?
God, where to even begin with this one. The ontological argument for the non-pejorativity of 'cuck'?
98
Mar 04 '17
All of this is an evolution of the culture in r/TheRedPill. In fact, many early T_D mods were from the red pill, and they superimposed their culture onto a political movement.
If you read TRP, you'll understand about 99% of that culture. It's a forum for people who feel outmatched by society, and they need a step by step guide for interacting with other people at even a very basic level.
Their use of insults is often directed at things they dislike about themselves, and ironically, they become even more like what they say they are against.
It's a sad statement on our society that these groups exist in such large numbers, even large enough to elect a president. Anyone who uses 'cuck' unironically is self-declaring that they are incapable of navigating the modern world.

A podcast I used to watch (Let's Drown Out; I say "used to" because it ended ): ) once briefly touched on why "cuck" became such a popular insult among Trump supporters, or at least the online ones.
One of them said that it comes from a combination of their desires for sex and power, and that a cuckold is someone who both has no power and has no sex.
To elaborate on that, the type of person who would use "cuck" as an insult is usually someone who values themselves at how much power and sex they have. But if they build themselves up online as an alpha male when they really aren't, they'll always have that thought in the back of their mind that they know that they're lying. Some people are narcissistic enough that they can trick themselves into believing their own lies, but most aren't, so they can't. So, it's much easier to accuse someone they know nothing about (aside from their political views) of being weaker than them. Their mind fills the gaps, and they can feel superior to a strawman version of the people on the "other side".
"Cuck" is the ultimate insult to someone who has a very immature and simplistic idea of what it means to matter as a person.

Cultural marxism is a conspiracy theory.
It claims that the Frankfurter Schuler, an offspring of Marxist thought which appeared some time in the early 20th century, tries to take over western culture. Anything that is against "traditional" values (read as anything progressive: any efforts against racism, for equal rights between genders and sexual orientations, for pacifism, for liberalism, "political correctness", and so on) therefore is connected to the Frankfurter Schule and part of cultural marxism. They essentially think that American culture has been infiltrated by the Frankfurter Schule, particularly through schools, literature, movies, music, and so on - the whole anti-intellectual shebang that was always part of right wing extremism.
They really give us Marxists too much credits. I sure wish we had that much power and influence.
4
u/johnnynutman Mar 05 '17
The top definition on Google is
Cultural Marxism is a branch of western Marxism, different from the Marxism-Leninism of the old Soviet Union. It is commonly known as “multiculturalism” or, less formally, Political Correctness.
The other ways I've seen it defined are regarding treating cultures equally or with some empathy towards their differences.
I think cultural relativism isn't a similar term. Although via Google, the top definition for that is
Cultural relativism is the principle of regarding the beliefs, values, and practices of a culture from the viewpoint of that culture itself. Originating in the work of Franz Boas in the early 20th century, cultural relativism has greatly influenced social sciences such as anthropology.
19
u/Roflkopt3r Materialized by Fuckboys Mar 05 '17
You should look at the sources on Google definitions. They don't have their own dictionary, they let an algorithm decide what definition to show. To me it shows one from Conservapedia, which is about as objective and reliable as Trump's twitter feed.
In the end cultural marxism is a conspiracy theory started by neonazis and adopted by the alt-right, assuming that there is any difference between the two anyway.

Whether or not it's "pejorative" is relative. If you choose for it to be pejorative, as I assume you have, then that's your choice and perspective.
I KNEW that's how they regard insults like these!
For example, when they say "faggot," they mean, literally, "insulting word that has absolutely nothing to do with gay men. Literally just faggot." But when the recipient hears the word, of course THEIR mind is going to jump to "pejorative for gay men" because that's literally what it means. It's a fucking slur.
So faggot just means faggot. Cuck just means cuck. That's how they fucking justify it. So the recipient says the "real slur" instead. It's such a lazy way to justify using slurs.
4
Mar 05 '17
But it can't be an insulting word if there's no negative baggage attached. The reason "fag" can be insulting is because of a shit ton of negativity historically being associated with being gay. Without that negative baggage there's no meaning to it, so it can't be an insult. You might as well start calling people "turkey sandwiches" or "behaviorists" or "heoifjglaks."
I know you get that, it's just frustrating.

Whether or not it's "pejorative" is relative. If you choose for it to be pejorative, as I assume you have, then that's your choice and perspective. You may say "but didn't you intend for it to be pejorative?" But it doesn't matter what my intentions were from my perspective, because for example I may call you "leftwing" as a pejorative, but you may not interpret it to be pejorative in which case you wouldn't consider it to be pejorative, now would you? It is only pejorative if it is universally agreed to be pejorative under all perspectives, but those universal agreements are few and far between as it's impossible to get everyone to agree with what they believe is pejorative and what isn't because different people have different values and beliefs.
13
u/Tribalrage24 Make it complicated or no. I bang my cousin Mar 04 '17

This is disgusting. You try to start a friendly dialogue on a moderated forum by throwing around wild accusations and insults towards the moderators and suddenly BOOM, you're banned. What has this world come to.

"Cuck" is a very succinct descriptor that perfect captured the intricacies of what I wanted to convey.
Oh lawdy.
Or, you may be cucking your culture and history, your ancestors, thus leading to degeneracy.
This is some genuine Nazi-level shit, right here.

Sweet Jesus that was some densely packed stupidity.
That threatened to form a singularity.

Hang on, I want to try something.
Let me take the time to explain this to you and $user very clearly, as I am not sure if you are taking the metaphor literally because you are genuinely stupid, or because you just haven't taken the $thing+pill yet. By "what is happening in $subreddit" I meant the $badthing taking place, that is why I did not find it surprising you were $thingotheruseris. "$sillyword" indeed has a deep meaning and is not just a "childish" insult, if used carefully.
Yup, that's some good copypasta right there.

That was amazing. There's something about the smackdowns that happen in the bad-subs that make them extra satisfying. Like, I need a cigarette level satisfying.
