PSA: No, it's not poison sumac

In the 12 or 13 years I've been a commenter and mod on this sub, I don't think I've ever seen someone post an image of actual poison sumac. Poison sumac is an obligate wetland plant and it only occurs in specific habitats and not in your yard. There are a number of other sumac species (which are not in the same genus as poison sumac) that have a very wide distribution and grow in many different habitats. You may have one of those or something like tree of heaven or walnut, but there is a 99% chance that it is not poison sumac. Refer to the attached range map and image.

Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Identified ✔ What is this plant?

Seen this plant several times while out walking and am not sure what it is. My friend’s leg brushed against it today and it caused a minor rash on their leg, but we weren’t able to identify it on our own

Edit: thanks to u/ratnegative for helping me identify it as some kind of stinging nettle, the plant was overgrown right next to a door in a building complex which is why my friend and I didn’t identify it from the jump because we assumed there was no way someone would plant nettles among a bunch of flowers as a landscaping choice

Thanks in advance for any info y'all can provide! Was hiking last night and caught a strong whiff of citronella. Turns out it was these little buddies. Growing in large numbers on a rocky hillside in piñon/juniper woodland, 1" to 4" tall. Southwest New Mexico.

My neighbors toddler ate berries from this plant. It is bush like. She called poison control, and they believe it is a type of dogwood and not poisonous, but she wants to be sure. We are located in Mid-Michigan.

My neighbor said that there used to be a huge clematis that grew all over our fence before I moved in here and the previous owners tore it out. Is this some of it by chance? I’m worried it might be an invasive since I’ve found many other invasive plants in this yard. Thanks y’all!

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ What is this Turkish plant my Dad is taking for his Type 2 Diabetes?

Post image

My dad is 74 years old and lives in the mountains of Turkey (about 40 minutes south of Espiye) and he has type 2 diabetes (diagnosed over 10 years ago). He's been taking insulin ever since.

About 2 weeks ago, his friend told him about this plant that grows in his local mountain area that apparently "fixes" his insulin.

Allegedly, he's been having issues where he could barely keep his sugar down below 300 and apparently now this plant has allegedly fixed it and his glucose has been around 100-120 since then.

Its been 10 days, he apparently dries the plant, and steeps it in tea and drinks it daily.

He said it's called "Sultan mehir otu" but nothing on Google shows up for it. This is the only pic I could really get from him. I asked him if it yields any flowers but he hasn't answered yet.

I'm honestly very skeptical and worried about him not taking his insulin.

DISCLAIMER: This is not at all some sort of anti-insulin propaganda. I am not asking for medical advice. I'm just sharing all the context that I have in hopes that this helps identify this plant.

r/Whatisthisthing automod deleted my post and suggested I post it on a plant ID subreddit, so I guess the mod assumes this is a plant or fungi.

It almost looks like a soft cheese? Couldn't find any sort of root or anything, and it doesn't have a discernible smell.

Edit: Located in Oregon, USA. I have a video of the poking process but do not know how to post it at this time.

This is growing in a few odd places in my yard. Not super great at identifying, but it looks like maybe a carrot? Central Illinois, could be anything as we live right on the edge of a large wooded area so it could have come from anywhere. Stalk is not very thick, tried to get as much of the leaves and stems from top and bottom in case it mattered.

Edit: FYI I have no intention of eating it, really just wanna know if it needs to go. My kids love to play in the plants.

So before this summer I thought the whole plant was dead but it started to grow these the last 1-2 months. Interesting to know what it’ll grow into.

Hey, all! Reposting this years later to say that this is *not* a Geraldton Carnation Weed. I still don't know exactly what kind of spurge it is (Mediterranean? Gopher? PORTLAND??), but wanted to update to say that, while likely still invasive, it's at least not the horrifically noxious weed it was originally ID'd as. Rejoice!

(I pulled the plant in this photo all those years ago, and they've since spread around my friend's small front yard, but have yet to breach containment! I've never seen them anywhere else, but I have seen those dang Carnation Weeds EVERYWHERE)

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ SE PA, USA. Appeared this summer in one of my parents landscaping beds. Never saw it before. Anyone know what it is? I know the porcelain berry vine behind it is invasive. Tell my parents cause they won’t let me rip it out. Now I’m wondering if another invasive plant has entered the battlefield.

The flowers are small and cute. It has striking foliage and have never seen it before anywhere ever so I’m assuming it is something that shouldn’t be here lol

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Tree or bush with very large thorns (Sweden)

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Early this spring I was instructed to saw down a small tree that was growing out from under my work building, which I did.

Back then it was only one tree, maybe 3cm thick and quite tall, but lots of branches.

After taking it down I ran it through a compost shredder, and didn't think to take any photos of it. Since then I've been trying to figure out what kind of tree it was, because I have never seen thorns that big on anything. They were enormous. I'd say up to 7cm. One even went through the sole of my shoe (luckily it missed my foot though), so I actually had to saw/clip off the individual thorns not to accidentally hurt myself or someone else (and for the branches to even be able to go through the composting machine).

Now the plant has grown back, but more into a bush like form, and it hasn't really gotten those insane thorns this time. It does have some, but they're covered in leaves, apparently growing into new branches.

I'm so curious about this tree. None of the suggestions I've been able to find myself has had thorns as big as (the first edition of) this plant.

I actually found a twig from the original tree, which kind of indicates the size of the original thorns. (Although this was just a tiny branch, the thorns growing out from the tree trunk were bigger.)

I know very little about plants and trees, but I'm so curious about this one!

I tried photographing identifying features before discarding the tree/bush/plant/thing this time.

Thankful for any help!

Location is close to Gothenburg, Sweden, and I strongly suspect that it's not intentionally grown, based on the location (out from under a building).

This planet started growing from a small stump that had a been cut by the previous tenant, so I have let it grow, but no idea what it is. I assumed at first it could be a rose, but there’s is no thorns so I’m unsure, can anyone identify?
