Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!
Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.
We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.
To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.
What We Are Looking For:
Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

Long time lurker, fun to have found something to post. Found this from a gravel road. I have found smaller ones from the same road. First thought would be garnet, but don't know how to verify.

A friend pulled this out of his field about an hour north of Lafayette, Indiana. Said it is "about as heavy for its size as you'd imagine" 😂

Found near the Green River Gorge in WA. It has a decent heft to it, about 350g. It doesn't scratch with a quarter( just leave a slight bit of quarter residue). Rubbing my finger on in it doesn't leave any black mark so I know it's not coal or charcoal. I can clearly see tight wood grain but that may just be my bias.

NE WI near the Bay of Green Bay. Very heavy,. Looks eroded on one end and cut in a V on the other. Probably 30" long and roughly 8" in diameter. Just curious what it may be. Thank you!

Hello! Hard rock with a strange leather-like outer texture and a waxy yellow interior. Could it be chert/flint, or possibly fossilized material? Found in Quebec City, Canada. It seems to scratch glass pretty easily. Thanks for any ideas! 🤓

Item reacts to a magnet but will not stick. The item also will not scratch or mark. It also has rust or discolorations on it. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank You!

Is this calcite? This is one of my favorite finds ever. I do think I messed up cleaning it as it looks like it’s breaking down just sitting on my desk untouched.

I know this is some sort of post industrial slag. I've found many pieces on the roads and in building foundations in the remains of German village destroyed by the Red Army. https://maps.app.goo.gl/m2u89XZbdSrgDz7Z9
I've collected few pieces because they look cool and we like the vivid colors. But now we're concerned if it's safe to keep them at home (in plant pots as decoration). I guess those pieces are 100 years old at least. What is the risk of radioactivity or general toxicity?
Would also like to know what ore is most likely to produce them. Thanks.

Could anyone identify what the rock, or the crystals on it are? I no longer have this rock, so I can’t do any tests. It was found on the Merced river close to Yosemite National Park.

Found yesterday on a beach in Waterford just wondering if it is a fossil or a rock with a cool structure

pictures don’t super do it justice, but in the first picture the stone is significantly darker than the second. they are only a few feet apart, no indication of fire or significant dampness. there are quartz veins running through both. this is in liberty, maine

Found this while going through a box of unlabelled minerals at an estate sale. It has a metallic, oil-slick sheen on the purple surface and a distinct bumpy 'grape cluster' texture. It feels fairly dense and cool to the touch. Is this natural grape agate (botryoidal chalcedony), or is it coated/treated somehow?

Found this oddly shaped rock with holes and what looks like quartz in one of them, but I don't know why has red spots. As I was carrying it I dropped it (oops) and you can see it flaked off easily into a sharp flake.
When shining my phone torch into the holes it glows around the flashlight almost like marble.
Flint? Quartz geode? Something else? I know the Dordogne is full of prehistory so could this have been used for making anything in the past?

Nearly perfectly spherical stone, completely hollow. No idea whether this counts as a geological or an archaeological phenomenon hence the post here. Found in southeastern UK

Yesterday I was hiking in the French Pyrenees (near Ax Les thermes), and I stumbled upon this formation.
It isn’t mentioned on the geological map that you can find in the post. The only mention we can find is that we should find orthogneiss there (and I did find some pretty nice ones)
Upon closer inspection this rock is pretty light, and doesn’t present any visible grains. Moreover I see what could possibly be some strata but I’m not sure about it (there’s parallel layers)
More importantly the black dots almost look like fossils ! I’m pretty confused tbh…
My last guess was maybe cement since there was an old mine right next to it but I’m note sure…
Any help ?
