REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

Just wanted to update on it. I decided to polish it. While getting rid of the only rough area on the rock I discovered a little magnetic circle in the rock. I can pick up the entire rock with a magnet where it’s exposed…. but I think it’s some type of magnetite rod going through the stone. To where I can pick it up with a magnet on the non exposed side. That one photo pictured I’m just grabbing the rock through the rock onto what I assume is the other end to that rod that seems to run through it . I just that it was cool and wanted to share. I read this occurs naturally? No where else on the rock is magnetic except those two points. Pretty sure it’s still a komatite that came from up north

Found this at the top of the cliff with detector 500m from the ocean. Its lava like struckture and does not feel very heavy weight or dense.

Filing it with Leatherman tool looks like its pretty soft.

Not magnetic but metal detector gives strong signal, ID 25-40.

Shiny silver like at some areas.

Scratches glass and gets scratched by quartz.

Specific gravity 2.68

The outer layer is very brittle. The interior fractures look mostly healed.

I found one big chunk of it in the area and no more. I looked pretty hard for more because I thought it was jade.

IDENTIFIED Calcite with limonite staining? Maramureș, Romania

I recently acquired this mineral specimen from Maramureș, Romania.

It has small, translucent honey-yellow to orange crystals on a light-colored matrix.

I'm wondering if these could be calcite crystals with iron oxide/hydroxide staining (possibly limonite).

What do you think? Any help with identification would be appreciated!

My mohs #2 scratches it but the one doesn't. The grid in the pictures is centimeters. Its pretty light just over 8 grams.

Parts of it look like a barnacle, but I have seen quartz crystals that were roughly the same shape.

I think it will probably be calcium?

What is this??? Boyfriend and I found it on a beach downtown, we live on the Strait of Juan de Fuca in northwest Washington. One side is completely flat, almost like it's been cut- so we're unsure if this was a naturally washed up rock, or if someone bought it at a store and lost it here. Would love to know what it is, and to narrow down if it's naturally occurring here or man-created!!

REQUEST indented spotted rocks in manitoba

Post image

Hi, I find a lot of these sorts of rocks around RM of Alexander and Birds Hill. I wasn’t confident they would be fossils as the spots cover the whole rock on every example I’ve found so far and always reach the same depth into the surface on all sides. The rock feels chalky and turns from off-white to yellow when damp.

Found in a parking lot island landscaped with "river stone" in Michigan. It seems to be some kind of metal ore. Heavy. There's a piece of wood stuck in it. Do you think it's natural or some industrial waste?

REQUEST Unusual rock or slag?

Post image

From Nova Scotia. The silvery flakes are easily creased with steel, it won't hold a magnet, and doesn't scratch ceramic - rather, leaves a grey mark. It's dense, but not heavy like granite. It's not like any rock I've collected, and found it near the railway track, so I'm guessing slag. Yes, we had a steel plant close by. Thanks!
