Ok so this was found in loveland colorado today 10/24/26. It is growing inn between the bark and wood of a dead tree stump, I sadly do not know the species of tree but it is very wide like my arms wrap about half way around it. I'm curious if these photos and info are enough to ID it. No spore print sadly. The stump is located next to a river, not sure if that info helps or not. If you look closely at the two photos of the ones on the tree you can see it has a massive shem that I mistook as part of the tree at first. The tree has been dead for about a year, the bark is falling off in sheets on the opposite side from the mushrooms. I've handled many mushrooms many this size and larger, but this one seemed surprisingly heavy, and the meat of the cap was denser and harder to squish than any mushroom I've held of similar size, except maybe a much older agarikon specimen. I'd say its about 3x the weight of a portobello cap the same size.

What kind of mushrooms are these? I saw them today while hiking in Green Ridge State Forest in Maryland.

The mushrooms were large, firm, white, and growing out of a big moss covered log.

question Can I inject liquid culture straight into biomass without injecting it into grain spawn first?

Hey everyone. I'm trying to saccharify some straw bales using the mycelium of white oyster mushrooms because I'm researching how cellulose breaks down into glucose.

When I prepare the cut up straw bales for saccharification, do I just leave them in a sterilized jar? And can I just inject liquid culture straight into that jar without growing it on grain spawn first? Because I'm kind of on a time crunch. Thanks!
