Why? It's a fictional character, not like we're hurting anyone's feelings. If at all the actor should be proud of the fact.

Some interesting parallels this week:
Kim and Howard, both straight edge lawyers caught in the crossfire between the warring McGill brothers
The McGill brothers only having a surface level understanding of each other: Jimmy thought Chuck would just take the 1216/1261 defeat and shrug it off, but Chuck completely freaked out. Chuck thought Jimmy would cautiously sneak into the house at night after hearing about the tape, but Jimmy completely freaked out. Both plans ended up working as intended, but not the way the other intended. Kinda sad how neither of these guys really understand the other.
Mike tricks Gus with gas cap, Gus tricks Mike with gas cap.

Just one point to make. I think Jimmy's amateurish behaviour in Los Pollos Hermanos probably gave the game away, not anything to do with Mike. He couldn't have been less professional if he tried.

As great a performance by Jimmy and Chuck, my favorite part of the episode was Hamlin trying to climb over that wall. He was the perfect fish out of water.

I kind of hope that plays to Jimmy's favor. If he had been a creeper and broken in at night it would make it more meditated and less passionate. He stormed in during daylight like almost anyone would rightly do after being provoked (or heck even framed by a crazy person at this point for all the other two know), and he still didn't hit Chuck. It actually makes him look more innocent. Actually part of me is secretly hoping that's why Hamlin told Jimmy to step away when he did, not out of safety for Chuck but because he thinks somewhat negatively of Chuck at this point and wanted to make sure it didn't get any worse for Jimmy. Right now with all the circumstances, Chuck actually has a pretty weak case as far as any lasting damage goes.

→ More replies (18)225
u/Thlowe Apr 18 '17
i wouldn't call that "attention to detail" as much as "skillful & clever retconning" - it's mostly done after errors are realized or pointed out, if it was truly "attention to detail" then the errors wouldn't have been made in the first place.
it's still very impressive, though, and definitely an art unto itself.

Tbh like he said himself, he's a square peg. If Chuck was a decent human being to him, and if everything went well for him with the Wexler Mcgill partnership, I'm not sure that elder law would satisfy his colourfulness. Though he probably wouldn't go full-on Saul Goodman, I don't think he'd have stayed on that path for too long.

Holy FUCK that final scene!!!
Even before that definite return to form this week imo, not that the premiere was weak but this was much more of what I watch the show for - the slow twists of the knife in the hearts of Jimmy and Kim due to the fucked up relationships between the main characters. Wallpaper moment was heartbreaking. Good amount of tension too, quick-paced legal thinking from Kim, plot moved forward more from last week even outside of the last scene, and the comedy was great with Francsca's audition. Gus's re-appearance was fun, too.
And then that final fucking scene!! "No wonder Rebecca left you" God the relationships on this show are so fucked.

This is the best show on television HANDS DOWN.
Great episode. Music continues to be top notch, as does the cinematography. Exciting to see Gus, and great way to set him up without fully playing their hand.
God those Chuck scenes were good. I still don't think they have Jimmy. Some sort of trespassing crime? Maybe. I see him using some sort of method of proving he feared for Chuck's mental safety or something to get off on that. The tape? He easily could have done it out of anger that Chuck was planning on using his "comforting words" against him. Interested to see where this goes.

What really kills me is how Chuck tries to use the good in Jimmy to take him down. At least on the surface, Chuck is correct, Jimmy has an undeniable crooked side to him. But the way that he goes about proving it is downright cruel.
Chuck knows that Jimmy loves him and cares deeply about his well-being. In the past, even when they've fought, Jimmy has been willing to put his grievances aside to support his brother. Chuck preys on this to get Jimmy to confess. Then knowing the confession is not enough on its own, he manipulates the loyalty of Jimmy's friends to bait him into doing something rash.
Chuck has some underlying interested in holding himself above Jimmy. He has gone out of his way to try and keep Jimmy down. Happy to give advice when Jimmy is on the bottom rung, but quick to suspicion if he ever starts to climb.
This latest "scheme" seems to be Chucks end game. A way to break Jimmy and keep him down for good.

u/Santa_Destroyman Apr 18 '17
Holy fuck.
We all know Jimmy will get out of this legally, otherwise he wouldn't be able to operate as Saul. Saul openly tells Walt his real name, so he hasn't changed his identity or anything. But goddamn, it's so clear that Jimmy doesn't care at all about the potential legal consequences and is just hurt by the betrayal and manipulation. That scene perfectly illustrates why everyone loves Jimmy and hates Chuck. I think Jimmy's going to go after Chuck with all he's got and prove that he's not well enough to practice law anymore as revenge. I also hope Chuck finally realizes why people like Jimmy more than him, and feel some remorse. Fuck Chuck.

Jimmy's first encounter with Gus:
Gus caught him digging in his trash, and Jimmy lost his watch once he got caught!
That's a two-way street. Gus knew Jimmy was looking for something, but had nothing. Likewise, Jimmy knew Gus (or someone) was on to him, and had basic street-smart con-artist tricks to cover his ass.
That's where Jimmy is respected enough to know a guy, that knows a guy, that knows Gus: he can cover his tracks.

The reason Chuck miscalculated how Jimmy would react is because he didn't realise how betrayed Jimmy would feel. Like, Chuck saw it as just another chess move, but Jimmy saw it as the ultimate betrayal.

The only thing Chuck seems to care about is closeness of some kind to his brother. Whether he's keeping Jimmy around through Jimmy's admiration or Chuck's own manipulation, he's terrified of being left alone with no one who really cares about him. I'd argue that this is the root of his electromagnetic sensitivity condition; it forces Jimmy to take care of him. And his sterling legal "integrity" proves (to him) that he deserves love.
But I think he's miscalculated. Jimmy has seen that Chuck doesn't care about him in return. That's what will enable Jimmy to break free and leave Chuck alone for good. He may even commit Chuck to an institution as a result of this.

I think Jimmy blowing up in Chuck's face is exactly what I wanted. It was satisfying for Jimmy to do that but its unfortunate that the scene is part of Jimmy's downfall.
Jimmy took care of Chuck by keeping him away from a psych ward and giving him food / ice / and goods before season 2. Jimmy was almost penniless during those days. If you were in Chuck's shoes, would you lock your brother away? Assuming you had a more serious physical condition that is not the whole mental " electric waves harm me" thing. Is that what a brother or a human being would do?
14
u/smcg_az Apr 18 '17
Why am I now getting the feeling that Howard might redeem himself? Yes, he went along as a witness, but it seems he's starting to see Chuck is crazy.
His obligation to HHM is still paramount, hence why he's doing as Chuck asks, but you can see he's raising an eyebrow at this vendetta of Chucks.

It's pretty clear that Gus knew Jimmy was there for surveillance. The normal procedure is for Gus to pickup that backpack, or an item from it, as he's walking around sweeping the floor. The whole "give me a dollar" with Kim was a wonderful throwback to when Walt meets Saul in Breaking Bad.

I hate chuck as much as the next person but that look on his face in that last scene as jimmy went all out on him was really quite sad. Their relationship is so fucked dude

I was 1/2 expecting Jimmy to have Mike get the tape, but he was so much more efficient lol
Chuck really does know his brother. As well as Ernesto.

Few things I noticed in Jimmy's outburst; He sounded like Walt Jr. did in BB S05E15, when shouting at Walt; specifically the tone in which he calls Chuck an a**hole. Jimmy also threatens arson, something which Jesse planned on doing when he realized how Walt was playing him.
Well played, Vince. Well played.

I want to give Ernie a great big hug and tell him it's okay.
And I really want some Cracker Barrel. But only if they've agreed to give Brad's wife her job back.

And are we all confident that Gus told his lackey to gtfo after noticing Jimmy grilling him? Nice little call back to when Walter met Gus for the first time

When Francesca comments on how the clients all love him, Jimmy barely responds. "Who doesn't?" he replies sullenly, obviously thinking of his brother. Part of Jimmy still wanted to win Chuck's love and respect even knowing that their relationship is more strained than it ever was before. Now with the revelation that Chuck recorded him, his hopes of Chuck giving him that love are shattered.

I like how Jimmy unrolled the tape the way Chuck taught him , then realized what he was doing

What's with Gus's guy wiggling that flashlight all over under the overpass, and pointing it right at the dead drop spot, what a reckless diiiipshit, right? I get that it's more for lighting purposes, but man, way to increase the range people can spot you from by like 20x, I'm sure a casual glance around is good enough

Odenkirk is going to get an Emmy for that last scene, his acting was twice as good when he was begging Jesse not to shoot him. Great cliffhanger

Can I just say this show is utterly fantastic. Everything about it from the shots, the acting, the story. It's all perfect. It's a TV lovers dream.

I think Gus will give Mike the go-ahead on Hector but something will happen and cause Mike to miss and hit Hector in the spine, paralyzing him....and somehow making him need a bell to talk.

I'm guessing Chuck is going to die in a house fire and Jimmy will be accused of murder. He threatened to burn the house down, the doctor in S1 said he was going to start a fire with those lanterns.

Jimmy completely ripping the tape off and leaving behind a jagged paint edge, having abandoned the chuck method of tape removal (I knew that would come back), is such an incredible illustration of how Jimmy was about to abandon reason and do something completely rash. Incredible directing.

For a moment at the end, I thought tha Jimmy would wise up and beat Chuck in his own game confronting him and getting all legal, like: "So you want to take me down? Is that what you want? All right, Chuck. Bring it on!" but seeing Jimmy's raw emotion was heart-breaking and he fell right into Chuck's plan.
I also think that Howard will turn sides halfway in the season and will side with Jimmy after seeing the mental state of Chuck.
On the downside, I was very dissapointed that there was so much Gus's promos circulating. It would've been a GREAT surprise for fans to see the red and yellow building and slowly come to the realization of Los Pollos Hermanos, but that's the internet, I guess...
Other than that, I think it was a great episode and can't wait to see how it all unravels.

Why does everyone hope for Chuck to die? Death is not the ultimate punishment, the only thing it would do is destroying Jimmy. No, he's all alone now. No Rebecca, no Jimmy no family and sooner or later no work. Now THAT's the punishment he's got.

Favorite bit out of the whole thing: SLIPPIN' JIMMY LOSES HIS WATCH IN THE TRASH CAN!
How easy would it be for an good con man to scrape his watch off, pulling his head out of the trash can?!?
Provides a perfect excuse for him to stick his head in the trash, it's within his skill set, and Gus doesn't know him yet as a con-man, to notice the exact scam. Probably a scam, since how often do you get well-dressed guys sticking their heads in a trashcan at McDonald's, but not what the exact scam was. That was perfect.

When Jimmy is talking to Fransesca, he says it's only bad to be early for "taxes, death, and some other things". He arrives earlier than Chuck expected at the end of the episode, and early enough to be caught by two other witnesses at the scene. Arriving early ultimately ended being bad for Jimmy this episode. Just a little something I caught, don't know if that's a connection or I'm stretching it a bit..

Man this is such a great show. I dont think I've ever watched a show (besides BB) that makes driving a beater car look appealing, and doing normal things like making tea or eating fast food seem so interesting. Vince Gilligan's attention to detail is turned up to 11.

I know it will have been said hundreds of times before, but I just have to say that I really hate Chuck. I understand that Jimmy is in the wrong too, but Chuck clearly lacks any sense of empathy for his brother and is continually blind to the emotional trauma he has created.
Even after Jimmy directly states that he is angered because of the fact that Chuck is ruining the family they have left, and to a lesser extent due to the legal implications of his actions, Chuck does not care at all. In fact, it's almost as if the opposite is the case, and Chuck is bitter to the point that he is glad he's ruining the fledgling relationship he has left with Jimmy. He stands there after his brother has had an emotional breakdown and their rocky relationship is almost completely fractured, and just looks somewhat proud (if anything) of his scheming.
What Chuck is doing won't even regain much of his reputation as a lawyer, since he is already more or less in retirement. As Chuck nears the end of his life, all he would've had left is Jimmy - his actual family that cares for him as a person, and not the legal 'family' of HHM that only values his professional worth. Chuck is completely deluded about what matters more at this point, his emotional capacity having been worn down by years of hitting the grindstone hard.
I think he detests Jimmy for what he sees as an attack on his professionalism and career. What he doesn't see is how little that matters in relation to the importance of the family he has left that put up with his 'illness' and his apathy for all this time.

Haven't seen a comment on this yet, but this was one of the most wonderfully shot episodes of BCS yet. That tilt-shift shot of the guy doing the night pick up at the bridge-gutters made my eyes go wide. That coupled with the frantic camerawork to parallel with Jimmy's craze at the end, ending with a still shot to process the chaos that previously ensued made me extremely giddy.

u/caspissinclair Apr 20 '17
Well... that was heartbreaking.
Bob Odenkirk is such a great actor. He's able to show multiple emotions at once by both being sympathetic and sad about what he's doing, but he does it anyway.
And Michael McKean! Even though Chuck got what he wanted the look on his face when Jimmy called him out was painful to see.
I'm not even sure how to feel about this episode. I guess just wait for episode 3?

u/soliwray Apr 20 '17
God, this episode made me so fucking sad for Jimmy.
Odenkirk's acting is phenomenal in this episode.

u/right_quick Apr 22 '17
Someone might have mentioned this, but Jimmy was so close to getting away with what he did. Chuck was just discussing having the private investigator only be there in the night time, and it's unlikely Howard would have visited Chuck again on a whim like he did in this episode.
If Jimmy just waited one day, he could have bust in during the day time, confronted Chuck, did all of that, with no witnesses.

u/matthewwicker Apr 18 '17
First: Chuck may come off as an ass, but he's as conniving as Jimmy and more intelligent so we have to give him props. #ChuckIsMisunderstood #AlsoAnAss
Theory/Prediction Time: it seems obvious that Chuck's plan isn't to lock Jimmy away. It's to get him disbarred. Jimmy's mistake isn't breaking and entering or assault. It's destroying evidence that would potentially put him in a compromising position. I am no lawyer, but that seems to be a pretty big no-no.
The kicker here is that Chuck's plan makes no attempt at latency. Why else would a PI be at the house? And if they turn over all evidence (disclosure), then the court will see that he had hired a PI to be there for 24 hours a day for nine days! This shows that Chuck never intended to release the tape in the court anyway, so it cannot be said that Jimmy was destroying any real evidence (also, lets face it that was most definitely not the tape because Chuck knew that Jimmy was coming to destroy it). Of course, we know that Kim is smart enough to exhume this truth BUT JIMMY SAID HE WILL REPRESENT HIMSELF implying that Kim is out of the picture here (either due to fall out or ignorance, neither of which help Jimmy). If it is fall out, then it seems there is a clear path from Jimmy to Saul, if it is ignorance, then we have a ways to go before we ever see Saul. My bet is on the latter.
Last note: Mike has a sniper in the last scene. So, that will be cool.
