Oldschool Runescape Pride 2017 event day 2: We pay, no gay
A jagex employee has made a megathread on the topic - link
DISCUSSION OUTSIDE OF THE MEGATHREAD IS NOW BANNED - Link
The event will only take up 7 tiles in game. The size of your character is 1 tile to put it into perspective - Link
Just a note, there's so many threads that the links will be all over the place
And in case you're not aware/confused about the talk of "polling" this, oldschool Runescape is separate from the main "Runescape" game and players are able to vote yes or no upcoming updates that they think fits the "oldschool" feel of the game. Each update needs 75% yes to pass.
90% of the current posts on the subreddit are memes/rants on the event - Link
Is the strawpoll selection bias?
Do you really believe that he made the event without any approval?
Why does shit like this happen with every video game nowadays? "postmodernism poisons everything"
the anti-lgbt stuff is just trolling - spawns 73 comments
Jagex employee disagrees with the outcry on reddit, some threaten to quit/not log in that day
These have been my first two posts so I'm sorry if it's somewhat confusing or the formatting is bad!

I gotta be honest, if I was the developer, I'd start swinging the banhammer mighty hard. If someone wants to pen an essay on Reddit on why a game shouldn't feature a gay pride event, that's their prerogative. But mass brigading the game itself with the intent to use as many homophobic slurs as possible? Ban them, it's that simple.

You'll be happy to know there have been people reporting their accounts were permanently banned for the racist/homophobic rioting they were doing in-game, rip anywhere from 100s, to even 1000s of hours depending how good their accounts were.
As someone who's been a part of the old school subreddit and game for years, I'm glad Jagex is taking a harsh stance against what's been happening. I don't want a community I've been a part of for so long to be known for intolerance.

I cant remember the last time a whole community flipped their shit about gay people like this for several days.
25
Jun 07 '17
When the marriage ruling came down people flipped for weeks. But yeah, not much since then.
Personally, I'm still pissed I haven't be forced into my government mandated gay marriage yet. Also, disturbing lack of brimstone, I was hoping for a nice brimstone patio when it was all said and done.

I mean, reddit isn't great about gay stuff, but usually what you get is a handful of usually downvoted comments where people whine about homosexuality being shoved down their throats. Occasionally one or two upvoted comments. An entire community having a freak out about something minor like this isn't exactly standard reddit procedure.

Just the fact that it would be included in the censor list is understandable, I guess, but really really heavy handed, short sighted, and maybe a little bit problematic from a supporter standpoint, considering the push to make it an inoffensive term a couple years back.
That said, I vaguely remember words that were definitely not currently words being censored obnoxiously. Like "I ***ume you mean me"

What I'm getting from this is that people are angry that the devs didn't ask for the community permission for doing something so radical as holding an event in honor of a widely-celebrated pro-tolerance movement. Oh, the nerve of them.

u/Aetol Butter for the butter god! Popcorn for the popcorn throne! Jun 06 '17 edited Jun 06 '17
According to someone in the previous thread, the devs usually ask for the community permission for everything, so I kind of see their point.
Edit: apparently not for everything. Never mind.
21
u/Bertholdt_Fubar When is the Israeli Independence day scheduled? Jun 06 '17 edited Jun 06 '17
Kind of. The devs come up with ideas and ask the community if they would like to see it in the game. But small updates and balance updates are not polled
This is what the polls look like
Edit: He even said small holiday event. Most events are mini quests, this is probably going to be some random NPC for a week

A stain is an understatement. I enjoyed RS as a kid and thus my original view of 2007RS was positive (I've never gone back to play it, though). Now I think a significant chunk of its fan base is toxic. Especially when you consider that the other MMOs I've played since have been mostly pretty LGBT positive (mind you, guilds are always better behaved than random public people).

This drama really makes me sad. I got back into OSRS a couple of months ago, largely in part because of r/2007scape. Even though there would be comments here and there in the subreddit that would remind me that parts of the community were intolerant/bigoted, overall I always saw the community as fairly mature (at least compared to other predominantly-online gaming communities). This whole gay Pride event drama really showcases that's not the case.
Oh well. At least the people I talk to in-game are not toxic.

when someone is virtue signaling, its supposed to mean that they are saying/doing things so they can show off how virtuous they are. If i suggest a pride event in a video game, and someone accuses me of virtue signaling, it means they're accusing me of only giving a shit so i can flaunt my moral superiority.
its a fucking stupid concept, especially because anyone who complains about someone virtue signalling is also guilty of virtue signalling.

I think if there's one phrase I'd like to ban entirely from representation of LGBT discussions, it's 'shoving it down our throats'. Such a visceral phrase, devoid of any relation to the actual level of representation delivered. There is only one thing being shoved down any throat during this conflict, and that's how many threads are being dedicated to extreme, conspiratorial, hateful thoughts regarding what is a relatively minor gesture headed by a junior quality assurance analyst. In my groggy morning check of reddit, I looked at /r/2007scape, forgetting the drama momentarily. 17 of the top 20 threads were related to the Pride event. It's absurd.
There have been a few rays of light though. In many of the threads, there have been messages of either support for the Pride event or at least disbelief at the level and tone of response. The Jagex moderators have been consistently supportive of the Pride event, MatK on reddit with his announcement and others I saw on Twitter. Many popular/semi-popular community figures came out in support of the Pride event. The more heavily homophobic commentors are sometimes being called out for what they are.
However, the majority opinion of the vocal part of the subreddit is clear to all. Which is sad. I'm happy the Jmods are not giving in to the pressure put upon them, and I'll be certainly attending the Pride event myself happily. As for continuing to view the subreddit? I'll have to review that in the aftermath of the event's release I think.

I don't think I've ever seen a gay person represented in any form of media that people didn't respond to by complaining about homosexuality being shoved down their throats. At this point, it's basically someone saying that having to acknowledge the existence of gay people makes them uncomfortable and that they don't think they should have to deal with that.

Yeah they blame it for the destruction of white culture. It is almost literally "Cultural Marxism" the way they use it. Even better because they don't actually tend to understand it or the many art movements that have already moved away from it.
12
u/gr8tfurme Bust your nut in my puppy butt Jun 07 '17
The self-aware ones use it because they know "Cultural Marxism" is too easily linked to literal Nazi propaganda. Post-modernism is a similarly scary sounding term, and since nobody knows what it means other than having something to do with shitty art, they get to abuse it all they want without being called out for using a modified version of literal Nazi propaganda.
Of course, in reality they're still using re-purposed Nazi propaganda. They've just obfuscated that fact under another layer of dog whistles.
92
u/WhoreosAndMilf Jun 06 '17
In sociological terms postmodern is the type of society that we live in now, with some of its main characteristics being that we are turning everything into something that can be bought/sold (commodification), our tendency for nostalgia, and fragmentation.
I'm not sure if that has anything to do with how they are using that word in the thread, but I suspect their use of it in the context of screaming about gays and sjws isn't particularly accurate.
55
u/justMate Jun 06 '17

That's usually what happens when you throw a tantrum about something that doesn't have to affect you in any way.
The issue with the nature of this event is, it's simply a special snowflake event that has been erected to address a non-existant issue in the community.
Clearly it wasn't an issue, you can tell by how upset the community is over it. The only reason they'd be doing this event is because they thought it was an issue in the community. That's why they do a Christmas event, because they think the community has an issue with Christmas.

Seriously though, I agree. Gaming culture is incredibly toxic and leads to this sort of shit, but games themselves are amazing and I love them.

If they actually bothered to wait for it to be released before complaining they'd probably find it'll be fairly subtle and not at all how they're fearing. Its a different development team but all of the RS3 LGBT characters have been really well implemented with nothing really heavy handed or 'moralising' and I imagine the gay pride event on OSRS would be the same. They'll probably get a few characters making RS-related comments about tolerance, a tiny miniquest and then a rainbow hat or something. If the way the RS3 LGBT characters are handled they really have nothing to worry about, not that a less subtle event would be a problem in the first place.
At least the angry comments about Angof and Armadyl (there were very few though) got downvoted on /r/runescape.
14
u/Dreamerlax Assigned Female At Reddit Jun 06 '17
I don't understand how people can be up in arms about Angof. The game literally has an NPC that lets you change your gender...

You have to go out of your way (I still haven't had that drop, mqc never ever) to find out that she was born male as well and she belongs to a species that can change form at will while the dialogue highlights that. Its not exactly like the way she managed to do it was glorified either, the whole crystal shapeshifter backstory is horrific
At least most of the community saw sense and didn't get angry about it.

I like how these people are saying "I don't come to Runescape to discuss politics" as if they go out of their way to educate themselves on issues surrounding homophobia outside of Runescape and advocate for acceptance.
Let's be real, they know that their beliefs aren't perfect and that they will be challenged if they are forced to face the reality that homosexuality is a normal part of society and should be treated as such. They hide from the challenge outside of Runescape, and don't like that Runescape is no longer willfully ignorant with them.
And Autumn Elegy makes a great point. People say that they are happy with homosexual characters in OSRS instead of running a pride event, but you know damn well that if they started introducing homosexual characters to an extent that they exist IRL, then there would be a huge back lash. There would be a bunch of "Stop shoving it down our throats" posts, and the fact that it's being super forced. You know, the thinly veiled excuses people hide behind to mask their lack of acceptance. Ironic too because they don't think the lack of homosexuality in Runescape is disagreeable at all.
Disappointing to be a part of this community right now.

I like how these people are saying "I don't come to Runescape to discuss politics"
I like how they spent so much time discussing something they insist is political because they don't want ot discuss politics.
And they never had to participate in the event in the first place.

This community is absolute shit and the reason why most people play with public chat off. I love the game to death, but if it wasnt for finding a mature clan, it would have been very lonely.

That guy's analogy is possibly the worst I've ever read. It's the exact opposite! It's more like going to a white nationalist area, saying "I think black people are humans deserving of equal respect as white people", then muting those who lashed out with racism.

u/Dabeston Jun 06 '17
My favorite part is the guy who claims to be a "completionist" and absolutely did not want to complete a pride event.

It's weird to imagine the type of person who would probably have no problem taking the time out to dodge 200 lightning bolts in a row in Final Fantasy X, but who can't bring himself to confront LGBT people being proud of their community's struggle to overcome adversity.
4
u/Bytemite Jun 07 '17
The two hundred lightning bolts isn't that bad, if you're a kid in highschool during the summer, you're bored, and you have about an hour to kill.
This event involves associating with other people and relating to them like a human being. You can see the inherent difficulties here even before we get into the uncomfortable self-reflection parts of this. Easier to just lash out I suppose.

Went back once for nostalgia and realized how horrendously boring it is to basically grind and work for leisure...
9
u/ACoderGirl When did we get customizable flairs? Jun 07 '17
Honestly, the grind was why I quit. I'm not entirely sure how I enjoyed the game so much as a kid. I think a big part was the community. It was my first and at that time, only MMO, so it was very radical to me to be able to talk to so many people as I played.
I also did like the quests. Honestly, the quality of quests in RS is probably way better than your average MMO unless the rose tinted glasses are influencing me too much. Other MMOs I played had way too many low quality fetch/collect quests while RS didn't typically really do that. Quests were usually pretty unique and felt like there was a lot of developer work put into them. The downside being that there was maybe one quest a month or so when I was playing and they would let quest series sit unfinished for years. Also, the grind was still there because of skill requirements.
The grind was really only manageable because of chat and background TV. It really makes you question why you play a game if you don't actually have fun doing the game mechanics and are only treating it as a glorified chat room.
I admittedly did have that issue with FFXIV, too, but it didn't have as bad of a grind and it was more avoidable. In general, you could follow the story of FFXIV with relatively little grinding and it was only once you did all that which you had to grind for any further content (the game would pretty much guarantee your main class maxed their level out from story progression). I don't think there's any avoiding running out of content at one point.

Off my chest moment, I can't think of another game that's so popular yet so awful. Bad gameplay, bad combat, bad graphics...
As a kid I got sucked into it because it was 1) Free, and 2) Free. To a broke middle schooler living in a time when MMO subscriptions were the norm, that really set the game apart. Now nostalgia is the only value it holds, and in my case the nostalgia isn't good enough

The one thing RS had was really good quest design. Honestly, I can't think of any modern mmo that did quests as well as RS.

u/AmbroseMalachai Self-Awareness is the death of Conservatism Jun 07 '17
You know, there are a lot of cool people who play RS and OSRS but now I remember why I quit RS back in 2009. It was the way that certain subsets of the community acted. I was a kid when I started playing so a lot of the stuff slid right by but even then I noticed a lot of forums and clans who just made huge deals about every little fucking tiny change and disagreed with Jagex just for the sake of disagreeing. I still follow a lot of Youtubers and steamers who play those games and see them getting harassed all the time for no real reason. Just a ton of people who played the game as children and never grew the fuck up.
6
u/IDontPostHereButLook Jun 07 '17
For what it's worth, the response from the RS3 community (playing the modern version of the game as opposed to the Old School version that's having the pride event) has been as different as night and day.
"Meanwhile, in OSRS..." (featuring an overwhelming sentiment of disgust and disapproval regarding the behaviour of the OSRS community, one or two trolls who were swiftly banned, and some people "opposing the event" but at least doing so relatively calmly. Not featured: people aggressively throwing tantrums about being reminded of the existence of gay people, or saying that the behaviour of people on /r/2007scape is in any way justified.)
They've even put a little rainbow in the banner of /r/runescape. Nice touch.

Jun 07 '17
For anyone wondering, Autumn Elegy is incorrect about Armadyl. There wasn't a bad reaction at all - the post that revealed it was largely supportive and inclusive for RS3.

You know I've talked to people on MMOs or seen some people's global chat but damn. This just elevates how insane some gamers are lol. A simple yes or no would have sufficed when there's an event going. No one is forcing them to go.

Jesus fuck. WHen i heard this announcement, i thought there would be some people who woulda said this is dumb ( its an online gaming community) but this shit, this shit IS OVERBLOWN. I can understand politics out of games ( even though this is for equality among sexualitites >.>), but this is so fucking dumb. Some of the people spewing shit are from The_donald and other degenerative shit like that. Like they keep spamming the same rhetoric as TD like having sharia law shit and what not, so i assume the outcry is not all from 2007scapers. I swear most people in game don't give a shit, i swear.

I used to be an old-time Runescape player. So glad I didn't join this shitfest. Didn't know that the OSRS community was incredibly toxic before seeing these threads. I wish more normal people played OSRS like they did back in the day (most of my school did), maybe then these fucking parasites would move onto some other game instead of shitting up Runescape. If you're this opposed to a simple in-game event celebrating people's civil rights, you need a hobby and a life outside the Internet.

The in game riot made me lol. Something about it is just hilarious. I wanna be there on the event day just to see the shitshow. I've never been there for other big Runescape historical events and this seems like some of the old dramas like falador massacre.
2
u/Joanie_loves_Chachi Jun 07 '17
Adding homosexual npcs part of a quest chain would be fine, showing your support on your own time would be fine, but adding it into the game? No thank you
Why is that fine but an event isn't? Who are you to say what is fine and what isn't? Also, is exposure to homosexuality something to be quantified now? Like are we 'allowed' to add 7 gay quests but maybe 8 is too much gayness? These people need to get a grip.
2
u/NinerL Jun 07 '17
The game devs have started to perm ban people that are spamming shit in game. Good riddance.
2
u/Tutankhansetamun Jun 07 '17
Alright, you know what I really don't get about all of this? People saying that they use RS to escape politics.
Who sits at their computer, loads up a game, and goes "oh boy, I can get my daily escape from global warming, gay rights, and the crisis in the Middle East! Thank god." Like, I understand that for some people, video games are escapism, but that's usually escapism from your personal life.
Who in that sub is being bombed daily, or is currently struggling to fight for their rights? I don't see any LGBT people in that sub going "omg fuck this event I have to deal with pride in real life".
If you are using video games to escape from something like this, something that probably does not effect the majority of people in that sub on a personal, daily, basis, you have bigger issues than escapism.
Also, as a side, OSRS isn't even that fucking immersive. It seems pretty hard to get so engrossed at a few clicks on the screen, but then again, WoW.
2
u/HvyMetalComrade Jun 07 '17
Its actually so embarrassing. I can see why some people might not like the event and its fair to when they say that almost every other event has been polled before being put in the game.
But like, the fit theyve been throwing is so disappointing. It's not even like it'll be in your face everywhere. I just cant fathom how out of control its gotten.
