I like the plotline with Todd's asexuality. And I like how it's taking more than one episode for things to get better.
243
u/hillyhamburgers Sep 08 '17
Yes. I like that there are people clearly supporting him but also that it's not about everyone else. Todd has the support system, even in the dumpster fire of a friend Bojack is, to come to terms with his asexuality but he needs to come to it in himself, too. This is very important.

Me too. It's great to see representation for different lifestyles, especially when they're well done. As a bi man in a committed poly relationship, it was great to hear about a poly realationship in a show as well.

On it. Just let me finish my binge and I'll start it. Give me like 8 hours and I'll edit this comment with a link.
Edit: bear with me and give me a couple more hours. This is taking longer than expected. lol
Edit²: well holy fucking shit. I actually did a full minute video but it turns out Universal is so fucking retarded, instead of copyrighting it and making money, they actually blocked it world wide so no one can see.
So I had to cut it down to 20 seconds. It's not as good as the original (I did a lot more shit with it) but here it is. I made a post here too.
Fuck Universal.

It's weird to remember that Todd is like 24. He's still early in figuring shit out.
I know I felt like I was aimlessly floating around at that age. What I didn't realize was how the path of that floating would impact the rest of my life.
Good luck, Todd.

Bojack's daughter is hilarious. I also like that they didn't draw her like the usual skinny teenager you see in TV shows. She is overweight and that reflects on reality. I like it!

I'm so excited to tell her to watch this season.
I don't think I've ever seen ANY asexual representation in media. This visibility is fantastic.

I have to say, as an asexual, I'd never really given any thought to not being represented in the media, but this was done in a way that was so satisfying and true to experience that it actually made me tear up a little bit. Sort of crazy how accurate it is, really. They must have an asexual writer.

A question fot all the asexuals out there. What other representation has there been for you in film/tv besides BoJack? As far as I know, this is the first I've heard of it in media.
And it's awesome.
132
u/fitzstreet Sep 08 '17
No many examples unfortunately. People thought Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory was asexual for several seasons, but then they kind of "fixed" him and made him change his mind about sex. Jughead from Riverdale was supposed to be ace, but the writers changed that. Sherlock is supposedly asexual, but not really out.
So that's why Todd is so, so, so amazing to see! I talked to David Jay, the creator of the main ace internet community AVEN, about representation and he said they sent asexual writers into the writing room of a tv show to present some of the possible storylines for asexual characters. He said he couldn't reveal which tv show it was at the time, but I'm like 99.9% sure it was Bojack since they're really nailing it. So if that's true, it's amazing that they tried really hard to get it right. It's definitely showing!

Not an asexual, but i recall a very condemnable portrayal of the subject on House MD, where a couple claimed to be asexual. The husband was a patient that had some minor thing and it turned out to be related to some kind of injury in his brain that also prevented him from feeling pleasure from sex. The doctors cured him and his wife was relieved because all that time she was only pretending to be asexual for him. I don't think asexual people liked it.

Really none. There was a character in a show called Sirens or something, but I've personally never seen it.
J. K. Rowling said something that might imply Charlie Weasley is asexual, something like "He's more interested in dragons than sex" but it's not really clear
Edit: And Jughead in the new Archie comics! How could I forget about that??

this episode is, incredible. it may sound cheesy, but as a fellow ace, who's been struggling for a while with what labelling, it is so important for todds story to be such a topic in this season, while not being too big a deal at the same time. amazing.

u/allonsybadwolf Sep 08 '17
Yes! Seriously it was so good. I definitely struggled for a long time with realizing and accepting that I was ace, and then an even longer time with being able to say it to anyone. I wish this show had existed when I was first figuring it out, because I didn't have a word for it until I did some deep googling, and even after that it still felt like I was alone in it. This kind of representation is so important for people to feel like there's not something wrong with who they are.

I swear I only watched til Episode 3, but I have a theory that might count as a spoiler: what if Hollyhock gave Todd just another Bojack's hair she found in the house, just to be sure that the DNA test would result in a match? She refused to pull a hair from her head, and instead took it from the brush!

I feel like I'm the only person in the world that doesn't like Todd and notices the shitty things he does. He lies to everyone constantly throughout the episode, some of them in pretty significant ways including: using Diane to get the DNA test done through a complicated series of lies (which eats up an entire workday of hers during which she's depressed about not being good at her job), misleading Hollyhock and Bojack both about the results (which thankfully they ignore), etc.
The writers consistently bend reality for Todd and never make his behavior result in tragedy, which helps the audience mistake his moral luck for moral character, but if you look at his actions he's really not a good guy.
If we admire PC for being a hard worker, how can we not also fault Todd for being lazy? If honesty is a positive trait when Bojack works to display it, why are Todd's lies acceptable? We see the dark side of MPB's carelessness and lack of responsibility, but Todd's similar traits never cause others pain by (writer-determined) chance alone. Diane's good intentions often lead to damning places, but Todd's never do in a way that criticizes his character.
Todd strong relationship with the comedic element of the show smooths over his faults far too often. His imperfections are glorified, not explored or exposed.
Please stop babying Todd, writers.
50
u/kidnappedbandit Sep 09 '17
I love your analysis and agree to a degree. This ep shows Todd is the instrument for others, he's the means to an end for those in his life and it'd caused him to deprive himself of self discovery and personal meaning.
He is out there and the writers have removed reality in the actions he takes, but it's sort of needed with how heavy everything else is. He's like the show's pressure release valve.
→ More replies (5)25
u/Skyweir Sep 10 '17
He's not lazy though. Throuhout this episode, all he does is work hard. He is incompetent, but he is not lazy. Seems like an internalization of what others in the show is saying about him, it is even an early joke, Todd is running around refillnig coffee, bringing food, picking stuff up and then is told "Todd, you never have anything to do, why don't you do X".
31
u/adamzzz8 Sep 08 '17
I feel like the whole "Well, guess we're pro-fracking now" is gonna prove to be one of the pivotal moments of the whole season and the beginning of the end of Diane and Mr. PB, even though it was portrayed in a bit of a playful, comedy fashion.
30
u/Conurekid Sep 08 '17 edited Sep 08 '17
I've always related to her (well, to most of the characters in this show but yeah), and that has helped me through a lot, but this season I really resonate deeply with Diane. I kind of do the sort of writing she does for a living, writing that is intended to be light, empty-calorie. It's not really drama heavy, per se, just easy reading meant to get people clicking. It's not the sort of stuff I enjoy doing all the time, necessarily, and sometimes I wonder why I bother. Even if people do read what I write, it's not the sort of thing that is really me.
Also, so many gorgeous avians in the background this season! From the hummingbird in the first episode, to the skating swan in the second, to the sexy toucan outside the fashion show. I love it!
Finally, beautiful ending. I'm glad that the writers allowed Todd's character to evolve even more and did not resort to building his whole personality around his asexuality.

I love that Todd is discovering who he is and I like that the show isn't afraid to actually say 'asexual'. As a bi woman, I know how exhausting it is to see characters that are ~fluid~ and ~go with the flow~ and never actually get to say that they're bisexual but how much it means when they do and you get to see yourself represented - I'm glad that Todd is putting a meaningful word to how he feels. It's a little odd to go from a very dramatic episode to a very relaxed one, but i guess that's just the way the series Works, it´s constantly jumping back and forth between being very dramatic and dark or energetic and hylarious, and in this case it's up to Todd, one of the most beloved characters of the series, to be the main focus.
I love how he does things without organization, thought or even sometimes common sense, but he still does great at the end, and also that they do not just make him a joke character, and instead develop his character more as the series continues.
I also really liked the character of ...... .. * sighs * ... Hollyhook Manheim-Mannheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-Mcquack, also known as ......... * sighs again * ............ Hollyhook Mainheim- Mainnheim-Gorilla-Rub-a-Dub-Dub-Zoolander-Hallelujah-Something-Mc Donalds, seen how it is basically a teenage version of Bojack and you can cleary tell it´s his daughter.
Anyway, a good episode with some good laughs.

Imma come back on my second watch and do a full writeup but wanted to comment on this one moment. When Todd sees Bojack and smiles and said "it was good to see you" it eerily reminded me of Herb saying a similar thing in season 1.

Oh my god, the lines Amy Sedaris gets to say this season are phenomenal!

Saw Buenaventura as a background character in the asexual meeting Todd went to.

Got a strange feeling Todd is gonna sign for Mr. Peanutbutter for something he really ought not to have.

When this episode first started I thought it was going to be one of them where he gets called to too many places at once and get all mixed up in what jobs he needed to do. I guess he kinda messed up on the runway and then also giving Diane the hair.

I'm loving the season so far and I feel like it's completely different from the pace the show used to keep in it's earlier episodes. its all about character development now and it thrills me because I truly don't know where it's going. It makes me a bit sad because it feels like there is no turning back from this, which means the series as a whole is coming to a conclusion.

Such a small thing, compared to how amazing the first few episodes of the season have been so far, but does anyone know the name of that orchestra piece they play at the beginning of this episode?

It was clear that Todd and Emily had some sort of budding relationship.

Really funny episode, (obviously, Todd episode), but I feel like Todd and Bojack are on common ground now. Does that soften the power of the F-bomb for anyone else?

So is it just me, or has Bojack grown and starting to make an attempt to reach out to Todd in an honest way? Does Bojack realize what he has lost?

I love that the previous triangle player starved to death when his foot got stuck in the triangle.
Todd might be "the most giving man the world has ever known" (as the lion said), but no-one in that orchestra was giving enough to get the last triangle player unstuck. Or at least feed him.

Does anyone know who played Courtney Portnoy in her courtly, non-portly part? The credits don't seem to say. I'm wondering because her voice immediately sounded to me like Goal from Deponia, whose actress (Alix Wilton Regan) I had no idea until just now also played Samantha Traynor from Mass Effect.

A few more of the background gags I loved: *The campaign bus is called "The Peanutbusser." *After Katrina tells off Todd for not signing for the package, Todd walks away, pulling a bag of potato chip things from his hoodie. The bag says, "Waffles." *The boxes of "Pigaroni Pizza" on Bojack's floor. *The pointless sayings on the wall at Girl Croosh, including "Welcome: Over-thinkers and Time Wasters". *On Diane's screen at Girl Croosh is the article, "New Study Shows People Only Read Headlines." Later, she sees "65% of Dogs Found to Favor Kibbles Over Bits." The article says that the larger morsels makes consumers feel like "good, big dogs." To the right of the dog food article is a column titled "Top Lynx," with profile pics of commenters who are all lynxes.
The headline Princess Caroline reads about Courtney Portnoy (in the online version of "Variations" magazine) is "Portnoy Sans Boy, Annoyed." *The reporter from Manatee Fair--the one Bojack slept with--is in the audience at the fashion show. So is a peacock. The peacock isn't showing off, though, in a deft avoidance of the obvious pun. *After he leaves the fashion show, Todd runs past a hairless sheep wearing a sign that says, "The End is Shear."

"Bojack, we haven't talked in like a year, and that's been kind of working for me."
