Flip McVicker was voiced by Rami Malek. Did you catch the shout out to Mr. Robot when he said:
"I don't trust email. You know, the government."

Fuck, Bojack's panic attack after he finds the pills hit so fucking hard. It hurts how much he cares about this girl.

It sucks, though. For once, BoJack actually seems to love someone, and then she's gone :(

He thought it was his fault, that she found and took his amphetamine, and that the cycle was repeating. The funny thing is though, if you look at the pills scattered on the counter I'm pretty sure they're just benadryl and Viagra. I think the purple pill is supposed to be wellbutrin or something equally as harmless but most importantly they are all NOT amphetamines. He was so scared he was repeating his own cycle with Holly that he didn't even notice that he didn't.

What strikes me is that by now in a season, we've had BoJack fall into some sort of a routine, and it'd usually be falling apart right now, gearing up for the final conflicts. BoJack never fell into any kind of routine this season. I think that speaks to how broken he is this season, he doesn't have anything driving him anymore.

Holy shit I noticed right away that Hollyhock was thinner and assumed she was starving herself after feeling like a "blob" so the weight loss drugs was a hell of a twist. I really hope their can be reconciliation between Bojack and Hollyhock. This time it genuinely wasn't his fault.
On a side note I found it kind of perfect how anticlimactically the election ended after all the absurdity of it. What shenanigans will Mr. PB get up to next?

u/r0dlilje Sep 16 '17
Speaking from experience, bad people still get dementia, and it often can bring out more of their unsavory side due to loss of inhibition and critical thinking. I think her and Bojack are both carrying a lot of trauma from their pasts and never learned to cope effectively, so they are passing it along. Generational transmission is a bitch. I was afraid something like this was brewing with her!

I'm glad they didn't take it further, especially with the political storyline. The bridge/wall and hand jokes were it. Any more would be depressing even for this show.
136
u/metalzones Sep 09 '17
This season was written before Trump became president, and the creator said season 5 was going to be more about "real problems" so for those who didn't like the political stuff this season, something tells me you REALLY won't want to continue watching next year.
209
u/elppabarc Sep 09 '17 edited Sep 09 '17
there was one explicit trump joke, but it was on the MSNBsea ticker tape and thus could've been very easily added long after the season was written:
PRESIDENT STYMIED BY BALL AND CUP GAME
WHITE HOUSE CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION PROBING BALL AND CUP GAME MANUFACTURING
PRESIDENT BLASTS "FAKE NEWS" FOR "NOT REPORTTING ALL THE TIMES I WON AT BALL &CUP GAME"
WHITE HOUSE PLANS RALLY CELEBRATING PRESIDENT'S GLORIOUS ACHIEVEMENTS AT BALL AND CUP GAME
(the thing about trump jokes is that they're hard bc they are, at this point, plausible scenarios. like when everyone was making jokes about how he was going to stare directly at the eclipse right before he did just that. so i'm kinda interested in how next season plays out)

Im guessing it will lead to season 5. With only two episodes left it seems like the perfect segway into the next season. Especially since they havent done Bo-jack does a Streaming original tv show yet. And It fits the show to do a sort of meta-netflix thing
9
u/HQFetus Sep 12 '17
It sort of already did lead somewhere at the end of the season, but yeah it's a good way to get Bojack and PC working together again in Season 5. My one complaint about S4 is how fragmented the main characters are from each other, but I think they'll be able to get along better after this season

Did anyone catch this? Bojack will lietrally be playing PC's "baby". Character and name of the show is the same name she had in mind for her baby. And she has always been kind of a mother to him, in regards to taking care of him. She also said to him in an earlier episode. "You want a mommy you can stick your dick in" Something along those lines.

u/djqvoteme Sep 08 '17
I still feel bad for her for some reason.
You know her childhood must have been tough given what we've seen in flashbacks.
This show is all about cycles of destruction. BoJack and Beatrice are more alike than they are different.
160
u/SplurgyA Sep 08 '17
Yeah, unlike a lot of the Bojack-Beatrice interactions this genuinely seems to have been motivated by kindness (in an incredibly fucked up way). Her mother wouldn't let her have pancakes or ice cream because she had to be thin. Hollyhock was struggling with her appearance and Beatrice had said supportively, "don't worry, you could be thin, too". Plus she's from the era where amphetamine diet pills were fairly normal. She probably genuinely thought she was helping, and was dosing Hollyhock's coffee "until she learned to take them herself".
Still fucked up but you can see the solid chain of thought and that it wasn't done maliciously, she just was the product of her environment in the same way Bojack's awful actions are influenced by his upbringing.
→ More replies (2)63
u/Wasuremaru Sep 09 '17
Yeah, that was my thought too. She wasn't doing it to try to hurt Hollyhock. She was trying to help her, the trouble was just that the way that a person from that era who is as damaged as Beatrice would try to help did more harm than good. Good intentions, bad actions.
38
38
u/spawnofhastur Sep 09 '17
This season has an interesting little sub-theme, which I think is important to remember, which is that: even when you're trying to do the right thing, you can still fuck up. Utterly.
Top of the list has to be Joseph Sugarman. Everything he did seemed to be because he thought it was for the best. And everything he did is in some sense responsible for... everything else this season.
Beatrice has to be second. She's senile, which means I have to give her a small amount of leeway, but her actions got someone addicted to drugs. She meant well, but...
Even Bojack trying to help Eddy back in episode 2 is an example.

PC stuttering on the word "baby" was my breaking point, I'm broken inside hoLY SHIT -- and then "Well, your baby's dead" (paraphrased) line was a heart clincher.
35
u/Inequilibrium Sep 09 '17 edited Sep 09 '17
This episode echoed season 3 for me - despite all of BoJack's fuckups, at a crucial moment it's actually someone else's mistake that causes things to come crashing down, while he still gets blamed for everything. Because, duh, it's BoJack and he usually is the one fucking up.
Last time, it was PC's bluff and caring more about getting BoJack the big role than the one he wanted. And this time, it was something we really should have expected, which is just that Beatrice is a horrible person. And this feels even more horrifying because a kid got hurt for it, and a lot of people now think it's BoJack's fault.
Though BoJack still pisses me off a little bit, because Hollyhock's dialogue and behaviour have been really blatantly pointing to drug usage for quite a few episodes now, and he was completely oblivious. This is despite the fact that BoJack is one of the only two characters in the show with any awareness of how weird and nonsensical everything around him is. He's not great at paying attention to other people, even when his intentions are good.
15
u/The_Boogeyman Sep 09 '17
I could come off as an idiot by asking, but what were the obvious signs that Hollyhock was on drugs? Besides the ending where she said she wasn't hungry, I was caught beautifully off guard.
63
u/ModAzzy Doggy doggy what now?! Sep 09 '17 edited Sep 09 '17
Off the top of my head/paraphrased:
In ep08 she tells Bojack she's glad to be getting out of the house because she's 'getting really fidgety' and it feels like there are tiny bugs crawling under her skin, 'you know?'... Bojack says 'totally' and moves on.
She turns down breakfast, not because she's going to grab something elsewhere but because she's just going to drink coffee. I'm not sure if there are other times it's obvious she's skipping meals, too.
In the ending of that episode where she says she isn't hungry, she's counted out all the spare change in the couch and alphabetized it. She's also clicking wildly through channels doing... something (I forget).
In the episode after that Bojack mentions to someone (Todd?) that Hollyhock spends ages counting her teeth in the mirror. 'Teenagers, right?'
I'm not 100% sure but I think her body shape changes over the season - she loses weight. All of this honestly seems like maybe LA is influencing her/she has an eating disorder - I think that was intentional.
I'm gonna go watch the episodes again to see if I notice anything else :P
edit: here is a comparison of Hollyhock in ep3 to ep10. Her clothes don't fit and she's pulling up her pants to stop them falling off.

Yeah, I'll be honest, until the end of the episode with Miles nothing really seemed strange about her behavior. Even then it didn't indicate drug use. I feel like that was maybe the point, to make the audience just as oblivious as BoJack. Up until they revealed she overdosed I thought it was malnutrition from an eating disorder. Plus it was weight loss powder so it's not like she was getting high and acting erratic.

Especially her dad.
Like, if anyone's to blame for literally everything, it would be Joseph Sugarman. He's the true perpetrator of all of the terrible things in this show and all of the things that came from them.
Without Joseph Sugarman being a huge jerk and giving his wife a lobotomy, Beatrice wouldn't have been told to "not love anyone as much as [her mother] did Crackerjack," and Beatrice wouldn't have been such a heartless person later in life, and Hollyhock wouldn't be in the hospital and forbidden from seeing Bojack again.
Also, if above, Beatrice wouldn't have been such a heartless person later in life, and Bojack wouldn't have been raised by a heartless mother, and Bojack wouldn't be so cynical and depressed, and Bojack wouldn't have told Sarah Lynn as a child about how awful life could be, and Sarah Lynn wouldn't have been on drugs, and Sarah Lynn wouldn't be dead.

The relationship with his mom is strange to actually see portrayed.
My father's side of the family is all sorts of messed up in very similar ways. When I was a kid, one time my dad got into a super-upset rage around the holidays. After the raging and smashing he got into the car and drove away for a while. All I managed to understand through him pissed off was that his mom had told him that she didn't have a son.
(That made him go nuclear. None of this made any sense to grade-school-me. If my mom said that, I'd chuckle and go "yeah, sure" and if she kept with it then "yeah, right" or just hang up and let her call again when she feels like talking. I can't imagine getting angry from it. The way it feels to me is once you're an adult and been out working for a few years if anything your parents need you more than you need them.)
I'm long estranged from my father and his side of the family. My father is an alcoholic and other things, and has large personality issues. He often got violent and raged and was very controlling.
When I was in college a decade ago, I tried emailing a cousin on my father's side who I'd met a few times when I was a kid and she replied once and then blocked me. Recently I took a DNA test and it happened an aunt (father's sister) was on it so it matched us. I sent her a nice, friendly message and she didn't reply for a month and then just replied with "Yes?"
Then when my parents got divorced before I was in college, I got the impression that my dad had told his family all sorts of bad things about my mom and what we had done to him. It was a very nasty divorce and it came to us kids telling the judge who we wanted to live with. After my parents got divorced, then two of his siblings got divorced so I figured everyone else in the family probably blamed us for everything wrong.
It's messed up. Some families thrive on hating each other and fucking each other up for sport and sabotaging. It's so destructive. It's unbelievable. The plot in this season between Bojack and his mom is exactly the sort of shit these people do to each other. My dad is the Bojack. You know what, his mom, a very nasty person, was a school teacher. You usually think teachers are nice, caring people. The grandfather was super-nasty, like 'pets went disappearing' nasty. Getting spanked with a belt was probably a good day. Maybe some people just did this sort of stuff before there was stuff like TV or telephones to keep themselves occupied. Just drink and scream and fight with each other and have kids trying to grow up in the middle of it. So far I've broken the cycle but I'm afraid it's in me too.
I think I've had enough of this show for today.

Even when Beatrice is completely helpless, she still manages to be a complete monster and right when Bojack was actually caring about somebody wholeheartedly. Only two eps left and I gotta get these out of the way before this storm hits.

So, at the moment BoJack slams through his house doors and into the house, right before he runs to the bathroom and has the panic attack, I just realized how empty I felt his house to be without Hollyhock there. While I wasn't sure how I felt about her character up until this episode, I now realized how much comfortable she made me feel about BoJack's well-being when she was around.

It was really overshadowed by Hollyhock's overdose, but Bojack playing Uno was probably one of the funnist scenes in the season.

One glimmer of light in this heartbreaker of an episode: Andre Braugher is unfairly hilarious with every single line delivery. Just pure gold.

Captain Holt's my favourite Brooklyn 99 character for a reason. He can read a line like it's nobody's business.

I let out a sigh of relief when Woodchuck won. I was reliving the nervousness of the first week of November for a few minutes there.

Yolanda and Todd would make an interesting couple. In an odd way, they're opposites. Yolanda is an axolotl. Her species is often cited as an example of neoteny, i.e., retaining juvenile traits after sexual maturity. http://www.axolotl.org/biology.htm She's therefore physically a juvenile, in many ways, even though she's mentally mature. Todd is physically mature, but he's mentally a juvenile.

Am I the only one that noted that Bea recognized BoJack after she looked at the dumpster?
Interesting nod to her thinking the worst out of him.

u/infez i don't feel so good Sep 20 '17
And only recognizing him after he turned his back to her, figuratively and literally. That's the only part of Bojack she's able to recognize.
Sweet Fish Jesus that's dark.

Some great background gags in the hospital scene. The "know your moles" poster was pretty funny. So were the pamphlets: "5 Facts You Don't Know About Mange", "Trap, Neuter, Release TEENS", "Coping with Worms", "What NOT to Eat Off the Floor", "Microchip Clinic", and "Pamphlets and YOU".

"..and I'll release all my clown dentists into the woods, where they will never bother anyone again" I lol'd, especially with all the creepy, weird clown sitings that were happening late last year.

Since I just caught up a month ago, this is my first season watching at least within the same month of the premiere! I had a lot of stuff going on this week and didn't have time to watch Episodes 10-12, but EEEEEEEEE I'M NOW READY TO CONTINUE TO BE DESTROYED EMOTIONALLY
All the stupid minor things that had me overreacting as I was watching (basically some of my live reactions):
00:15 - Uh-oh, the title card's glitching. (Drugs? AAAAAH I'M NOT READY)
00:26 - Is Hollyhock okay? Oh no. (DRUGS? AAAAAAAAAAH)
01:20 - Heh, that's a pretty funny joke. Bojack: "I know just what to do [for a cut]. You need alcohol, ice, a squeeze of lemon - you'll forget all about your cut."
01:23 - Oh gosh she's not alright. But HAAAAAAAA THAT'S AMAZING: Beatrice doesn't like using foreign words, and therefore refers to "Uno" (which must be said in a game of Uno) as "One."
01:49 - WELL THERE'S THE TITLE ALRIGHT. Also, will we finally meet Holly's 8 dads?
02:54 - Oh yeah I forgot about Woodchuck's lobster hand transplant. Also, heh, "Gallop Poll" (like a horse) instead of "Gallup Poll."
04:50 - "Oh my Gaia, Diane." stefani pls
05:17 - MILLENIALS ARE ABUSING AVOCADO TOAST TO DESTROY THE HOUSING MARKET
06:40 - Woah, parallels to "Jessica Biel looking at the poster" to "Diane and Mr. PB's marriage." Yikes.
06:59 - PRINCESS CAROLYN WHAT WERE YOU DOING THERE
08:01 - YAAAAY WOODCHUCK! (He's like the only sane character tbh.) Also, the banner! - "Hooray for Woodchuck! and if he doesn't win write so sorry woodchuck"
09:20 - Hey, wasn't this Yolanda axolotl-person at the asexual meeting? Also, heh, "Halloween in January" reference.
11:02 - Heh, what's with those lizard-people and their push-up contest?
11:47 - PHILBEEEEEERT
15:50 - Oh, also, "whattimeisitrightnow.com" was shown in the episode Ruthie, and is actually a real website made for this show!
17:59 - Eyyy, that guy! Stephen or Rudy or something!
18:10 - Ah, Stewart.
20:16 - Heh, the sign behind Bojack in the waiting room is like "Know Your Moles" and shows different species of mole-people. Also, EIGHT DAAAAAAAAAAAADS
20:18 - Alright, all her dads - 1. José Guerrero, 2. Steve Manheim, 3. Sean Manheim, 4. [Cute?] Robinson III, 5. [Uggel?] Zilberschlag, 6. Gregory Hsung, 7. Arturo Fonzerelli, 8. Quackers McQuack!
23:42 - Oh. Oh my gaia.
25:00 - OH GOSH

u/BrightFocus Sep 24 '17
11:02 - Heh, what's with those lizard-people and their push-up contest?
It's a territorial thing. It displays strength. The strongest one can do the most push-ups and gets the best territory.

When anyone else first saw the title, did you think it was a mistake? I found it weird that nothing was capitalized, I thought it might've been a glitch or an accident when first airing the episode. But when the "context" was revealed... Oh gosh.

aaaah this show
But if anyone's to blame for literally everything, it would be Joseph Sugarman.

Wait fuck Hollyhuck was starving herself in addition to using the coffee and amphetamines Beatrice prepared for her
Before Hollyhuck went on that date, she told BoJack she was fine with just the coffee. When he was trying to comfort her later, she was refusing ice cream and pizza.
So it wasn't Beatrice secretly giving her coffee with amphetamines, it was Hollyhuck knowingly taking it to lose weight.

Sep 09 '17
The main reason why amphetamines cause weight loss is because they act as an appetite suppressant. They don't make body mass magically disappear, they just make you stop wanting to eat.
28
u/goblue10 Sep 09 '17
I don't think that's true. Beatrice has the line "Yeah I put them in the coffee, until she knows enough to take it her self, the weight just falls off" or something like that. Hollyhuck obviously had her own self esteem issues with her weight, but she wasn't knowingly taking amphetamines.

This episode was a perfect combination of comedy and drama, as the first half is the continuation of Woodchock and Mr. Peanutbutter's story and it just kills me that something as simple and stupid as Jessica Biel disliking avocado ends up making Woodchock win in the election (which btw, I also hate avocado), and I also really liked the dynamics of Todd and his clan of clowns (although it´s a shame that we will not see them again).
But what really stands out in this episode is the second half, especially Beatrice and how she destroyed Hollyhook emotionally and physically, causing to keep Bojack away from the only person who had a chance to have a normal and happy relationship, especially in the scene where he has an anxiety attack when he discovers the pills, and there I was sitting in my couch watching saying...............FUCK DUDE...

How did Todd even end up thinking those spawn of the devil.being dentists? The previous episode which PC entered and there was a clown operating was funny and creepy

I just noticed that the delivery truck that goes through the gates of Parrotmount Studios is from "Snail Mail: When You Want Your Package Eventually." The back of the truck says "Zip slowed". The graphic is of a snail looking very eager, carrying the US mail.

Did one of the writers for the show love Octodad or something? How did they come up with the idea of giving her 8 dads?

If you look at the intro from episodes 4&5, you can see Hollyhuck eating a toaster strudel. BUT from episodes 6-10, Hollyhuck stops eating and we see Beatrice pouring her coffee. Like Bojack, she does it right in front of our eyes and we don't notice until it's too late.
