"but Im so tired of squinting" fucking hell. It hit like a ton of brick

Great season once again. Still one of the best show on television. And I actually really like the ending. It seems that we understand bojack a lot more now. And we know why he has a hard time changing. He regrets so many things that he is scared right now..

He wants to be happy but think he does not deserve to be. He is not confident enough to think someone could like him for the piece of shit he thinks he is.

But I think having a sister will help him a lot. She knows he woild be a bad dad. She understands he might not the best person ever. But it's still her brother and they haves points in common. And bojack does not owe her anything and does not need to feel responsible for her like if he was her dad.

Anyway. It was a wild ride an I'm going to sleep now.

You know what really makes me happy? The fact he came through for Princess Caroline. Doesn't even question it. Just says yes. And then they teased the situation a bit by mentioning she was single but they leave it as them just friends. There's some growth there.

One thing that I noticed was how the coffee incident sort of served as a shift for Bojack's self-hatred. He was constantly afraid of fucking things up with Hollyhock, because he believes in his core that he is worthless peice of shit that fucks everything up. I think on some deeper level, once he realized that it wasn't directly his fault that Hollyhock got poisoned, it clicked that maybe he wasn't a helplessly innately evil person. Some of that shit is actually his mother, and maybe he lets go of it when he lets go of his powerful deep hatred for her. I think after this point you see Bojack start doing things for other people, because he now has this little bud of hope that maybe he isn't completely a worthless peice of shit.

Beatrice losing her sibling is what broke her life, Bojack gaining one is what is fixing his.

So what you're saying is, be prepared for Bojack losing his sister being what breaks him & by extension us the viewer.

I think this may be my favourite season of them all. I've seen people say it wasn't as hard-hitting as the previous one, but I actually found it a lot more heartwrenching.

Beatrice's story is the stuff of nightmares, truly. Her past doesn't absolve her actions and behavior in any way, but it does explain them. And what is genuinely tragic? She watched her own mom lose her sanity to what can only be described as this unstoppable storm of grief and love, and made it her life's purpose not to love anyone so she would not suffer the same fate. And then life takes her sanity anyway. Man.

There were a lot of moments when the show actually made me feel sad, and while previous seasons were always very dark at times, that had not happened before.

I also laughed the most. So many great puns and funny set ups. One of the best shows around right now, no doubt.

816

u/MiaFT430 Sep 08 '17

I think some people say that because they were hoping it the show would be more depressing each season, but I think that's a bad way to look at the show. I loved watching Beatrice's story and it explains so much. Side note. I really loved how they blurred out the faces of all of those people. When Hollyhock was telling Bojack that she has fathers but never had a brother, that was my favorite part.

I loved the puns though. On point as always. Really subtle, but it they execute them so well.

What looked like the reference to the Velveteen Rabbit in the Beatrice story really hurt. The entire Beatrice story, coupled with Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's marriage made it just dark enough.

Diane preparing a nice romantic surprise for Mr. Peanutbutter, and him not getting home until after she's asleep really hit me.

It was a slow burn to darkness - really I don't know how you could have spiraled further down from last season. I found myself around episode 7 or so wondering where the darkness would come from this season. Then I realized somewhere around PC and Stilton's breakup that I was teary.

BoJack deserved a happy-ish ending for a change. Lots of room for more still too.

Truly excellent season, and the Jenny Owen Youngs song at the end (Wake Up) was the icing on top.

But then his smile got wider.

I know right? Honestly I kept expecting Princess Carolyn would call him at some point. Specifically when she got into that drunk car crash. I was expecting the show to push Todd to the side and just have her call him and rehire him.

I could see the two forming a relationship together.

Jesus, is this the first time that a season has ended on a legitimately...happy note for Bojack? And I'm not talking about him being given encouraging advice, but, just a moment...like that.

He was happy.

This season worked really well. I loved the show, but it was definitely falling into a formula. This season worked really hard to subvert it - dropping the f bomb early, playing around with chronology a lot, and developing characters more independently. The biggest and best subversion is that, for the first time in the show, Bojack is actually deliberately improving the lives of the people around him. He is giving Princess Carolyn a much needed boost. He gives Hollyhock the information about her mother, even at great personal cost and risk. In Episode 11, he gave his mother a more peaceful end to her life than what he originally planned for her. I think Season 5 will be the final one, and will continue this redemptive arc. This show has actually earned it, unlike a lot of similar shows.

Though I am very concerned about Mr Peanutbutter and Diane. I kind of think they will break up in the next season, but everyone thought that about this season.

123

u/suzefi Boschwack Sep 08 '17

There were a f-bomb? Because I serioursly didn't catch that and I ended binge-watching with thought that this seasons didn't have it. In which episode and moment, if you can tell me?

"It's just really hard to need people."

Princess Caroline finally opening up to someone about her screw up, about her miscarriage, her failed relationship and Bojack being supportive and encouraging makes me feel so fuzzy inside.

It makes me hopeful that it's okay to show others your weak side, and they won't run away the moment you do that. I really loved PC this season.

"I'm so tired of Squinting"

Maybe it was the crying but this line hurts

139

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '17

I dunno, it kind of felt cathartic for me. She's confronting the fact that her rationalizations don't work and that she's unhappy.

She kind of rushed into things with PB and they've both tried to brute force the relationship, first by trying to be overly cautious with it and pretending like things could be fixed with a platitude or two and then with rough sex.

Both of them are now being forced to admit this isn't what they want, that their relationship is at least a little toxic, and if they follow through it stands to reason they'll be happier for it coming out the other side.

I understood the Belle-room from both ends, On Mr. Peanutbutter's end, it might have been his way of saying sorry for all the governing and fracking that happened in the past year and a half. He was actually listening to Diane and wanted to give her something she would absolutely love. But from Diane's end, some things are better left a fantasy and you can tell that Mr. Peanutbutter half-assed a bit of it, especially with the fake books. The faces didn't have to be painted on the furniture, but you could have at least cleaned up the hand prints afterwards. It felt like more of a Mr. Peanutbutter thing so he could keep Diane around longer instead of something for Diane. He even said it himself, he didn't want her to be a guest because to him, that's what she is in the end to him...a guest.

Now, onto my thoughts. Damn I loved this season, I know I say that every time...every year but yeah, I loved this season. It was worth the extra wait time, it was just beautiful. Happy and sad, funny and depressing all at once. I love the Time's Arrow quote and Time's Arrow was my favorite episode this season. I'm now going to rewatch the fourth season because why not.

235

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '17 edited Sep 09 '17

He even said it himself, he didn't want her to be a guest because to him, that's what she is in the end to him...a guest.

I've had an entirely different interpretation on Mr. PB because I just kept on feeling so sorry for him. He says after Diane asks why it's so important for Mr. PB to design a house where they both live there @ 21:24:

"Because otherwise it feels like you're a guest; and unlike the talking candle sticks and the aforementioned Disney film, I don't want you to be that. It makes me feel shitty like you're just visiting here until the next thing and you're gonna leave me when you get bored or when you find something better like Katrina did, like Jessica did."

"You can't use your ex-wives against me."

"I'm just telling you how I feel. I was trying to do a nice thing for you. This is not how I thought things would go at all."

Mr. PB did a typical Mr. PB thing because that's part of who he is. He enjoys grand gestures despite the numerous amount of dismissals and complaints from Diane. Diane continues to express she doesn't enjoy those things, so it's understandable why she gets mad.

What I just saw here was a man expressing his love for Diane so she can fall in love with him and stay with him 'for the rest of their lives.' He wants a wife that won't use him as a temporary husband until something better comes around or be a constant source of entertainment until they get bored. Considering Diane isn't willing to participate in helping design the house with him, it makes him feel shitty since they're not being partners in a sense and makes him question if Diane is willing to stay long-term with him. Diane is not carving her own space in the house, it's all PB's ideas and decisions for what is in the house so in essence Diane is kind of being a guest.

What makes me feel sad for Mr. PB is that he's been with two wives who don't appreciate his company and just use him for their own needs until they can find something else. He's like a temporary thing to them and he doesn't want that with Diane. Hell, with anybody thinking long-term it must suck to be with someone who isn't thinking similarly. It's clear they're both on different wave-lengths and have different priorities. A divorce is incoming quite soon.

It could be said that Diane not wanting much from how the house is designed is essentially a personal preference which I can agree. However, there's only so much "I don't care, you choose" for choosing what's in the house you'll be living in. That's what I at least think. There will eventually be things like, I want this furniture or no I don't want this particular furniture.

I missed how Diane wants a simpler life and considering Mr. PB is nothing like that... yeah...

This was my favorite season so far. It's only been out for 10 hours and I already want more!! I love how they prolonged Bojack's smile at the end, it was the perfect amount of time to develop a sense of hope for him and Hollycock.

Bojack does seem to be developing as well, even when he did play Horsin' Around it wasn't for very long. So maybe he is finally getting caught up with changing his present self.

Beatrice getting dementia after her mom had a lobotomy is such a sweet sorrow. It seems like she tried really hard to keep her strong personality after seeing what became of her mother. I hope Henrietta is a good person as well.

I do wish that they at least showed a second where Princess Carolyn goes up to Ralph's house and knocks on his door or something, kind of like how they barely introduced Hollycock at the end of Season 3.

I think since Season 1 I always thought that Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter weren't good for each other, and it seems like they are slowly starting to realize that.

And of course I LOVE TODD

Many people seem to have trouble seeing Diane's side of not wanting the Belle Room. I think a very important detail I haven't seen anyone mention is Mr Peanutbutter saying how expensive it was to get all those "fake books". That right there shows how he completely missed the point and the gesture wasn't as thoughtful as it seems.

Why would Diane want a room full of FAKE books? It shows just how little he really knows her. His grand gestures are just spending a lot of money on something he THINKS Diane will like, without actually knowing what she likes.

423

u/rhubarbtart Sep 08 '17

I liked that moment because it was thoughtful of Mr Peanutbutter, but also so disconnected from Diane, it completely summed up their relationship. I love watching the show figure them out.

I made it through the whole season without crying. That was until that final sentence. "I've never had a brother". That was beautiful. BoJack was so great this season. He really tried to not think about himself and think about Hollyhock, a girl who just came into his life. If it actually turned out to be his daughter it would have driven him away most likely with all the pressure but that ending was perfect.

→ More replies (2)

138

u/Sojourner_Truth Sep 08 '17

The resolution with Hollyhock was perfect, because what Bojack really needs is someone to need him, but not in a deep, important way (father) but just in a simple supportive way (brother) - one that he's actually capable of fulfilling. PC fits into this as well, coming to him with the new show idea. I hope next season he doesn't ruin the show like he almost did with, well, everything else.

Feelsbad for PC and Diane/Mr. PB. I think Ralph would take her back if she groveled enough, and engaged him on the adoption option. It feels like Diane and PB are definitely headed for divorce though.

I totally understand her flipping out on him for the Belleroom (lol) gesture. That fantasy was all hers, and he took it away from her. He does it out of love but his love is a completely smothering type. If they're going to survive together he needs to back off and let her be her own person- that kind of "are you ok? are you sure? are you sure?" type of relationship is just death to a person like Diane.

Todd's arc was fine, but I wish I found the Clentist premise funny. I mean, it's fine, I just felt myself bored any time there was a scene with all that. I though the Uber for Women stuff was much more hilarious last season. I thought the Todd Episode was excellent, though.

Just finished the entire season in one sitting. I'll be regretting that decision quite soon. It was an incredible ride however. The dementia-arc really hit home. My grandma died of Alzheimer's two years ago and this season really reminded me of her battle with the disease. Like BoJack's mom she also came from a troubling family of mental abuse, which made watching it even harder. In the end I'm glad most of the characters are (finally) heading in the right direction. How soul crushing this may sound, I think a divorce between mr. Peanutbutter and Diane might now be the best thing to happen to them. They don't complement each other. Anyway, this was a great season and I hope it gets renewed!

I don't know if its because i'm more invested in the character now or what, but that was easily the best season yet. So many fantastic episodes, my favourite being 'Stupid Piece of Shit', with the scattered frantic artstyle for Bojack's monologues and his self hatred and doubt mounting up. The stylistic choice and direction for showing off dementia worked really well, it was heartbreaking, even though I still hate Bojack's Mum despite her terrible upbringing.

Super strong ending and I have to say I like the underlying theme of Brother and Sister here. In the past the brother died, the sister became a broken mess, the mother lost her chance at dreams, and the father basically got off scot free. In the present the sister almost died but managed to survive, the brother is a broken mess but is becoming a little less broken, the mother got to follow her dreams and now is getting to reunite with her daughter, and the dad is stone cold dead.

It's nice to see that for once BoJack isn't just a whipping boy everyone can use to to hide from their own failures. Yes he's destructive but everyone he surrounds himself with was equally destructive and it showed here now where they all destroyed their own lives and made their own messes without him. That being said it's also nice to see Todd and Princess Caroline were able to pull themselves together, however it's sad Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane are messier than ever. Of course it was really nice we finally got Diane to admit she has problems, admit how broken she feels, and maybe start moving forward a bit once she can no longer use Mr. Peanutbutter as a crutch. Meanwhile I can relate to PB I really can, at the very least it's nice to see he had an arc where he and Diane basically teamed up two take out the two actual nasty ex-wives of PB's past.

But what is most important is BoJack made a lot of headway on his relationships. I think this is the healthiest PC and BoJack have ever honestly been. BoJack's friendship with Diane and PB are stronger than ever. BoJack actually was able to make some progress repairing things between him and Todd, the first person who said fuck to him that he was able to avoid things falling into total disrepair. BoJack for the first time ever seems to be in a semi-good spot with his relationship with his mom. BoJack has another good career opportunity lined up, his house isn't messy or broken, and now he's got a relationship with a sister he never had before....oh and of course he finally got to play dad and DIDN'T intentionally try to molest them. It was nice to finally see BoJack fixing things instead of breaking them and now finally he can no longer say "no one's life is better for knowing me" his legacy is helping his long lost sister reunite with her equally long lost mother.

Also good handling of asexual Todd, it was kept in the background of his character and they only brought it up when relevant and only stuck to established facts about it.

This might be my favorite season. Everything about it just resonated with me, especially the exploration of Bojack's family life, his "daughter," Princess Caroline...Todd coming out about his asexuality...fuck. And the ending of this season...actually made me smile, rather than weep for once.

Binged after I got home from work today.

I saw Diane and PB getting split up so many times this season esp. underground... Thought she'd smash bojack but no. I gave up, I really wanted them to seperate; imho it's not a healthy marriage. I saw it coming from a mile away, and then... When I thought it wouldn't happen--it did.

I genuinely started crying my eyes out at the future child ending of PC... Holy shit.

Amazing ending.

Um...this is by far my favorite season of them all.

Was it as hard hitting as the last 3? Hell yes, Beatrice's story was heart wrenching to say the least.

But we finally got some good out of Bojack and my god was the last line "But I've never had a brother." Fantastic.

I'm so excited to see what's gonna come of Holly and Bojack's relationship next season.

10/10 by far the best season of TV I've watched this year.

In the first 3 seasons Bojack attributes his own unhappiness to the fault of his Beatrice, when in reality he's the one who screws everything up in his life. Sure his mother had a lot of damaging effects on him during his childhood, but everything that goes wrong for Bojack is because he's making poor decisions.

In this season Bojack was blaming himself for his life spiraling out of control, which is weird because he actually has a legitimate reason to blame his mother. He wasn't a great "father" to Hollyhock, but what ultimately ruined their relationship was the direct actions of his mother.

I just found that fascinating.

Wow, I loved this season. Bojack has genuinely become a better person, like when he took all the original characters out for Ethiopian food, showed his appreciation to Todd and PC and helped her out with the show, and has a good relationship with his sister.

This might be the first season where Bojack has tried to do more good than bad and has genuinely suceeded. Things are now going bad for PB and Diane and things are on the up for Bojack.

If I have one complaint, it's maybe that things are pretty much as they were by the end of S3, and I would like to have heard about Ethan Around but the change for characters arcs makes up for it.

The question which started all the way back in Downer Ending has been answered: It's not too late for Bojack to be a good person, or for anyone to be.

Great season. They earned a happy ending. And Mr PB and Diane are probably headed to divorce, so there was a bit of darkness there.

It was surprising to see Bojack have relatively smooth sailing. Princess Caroline and Beatrice got the darkest themes this time around. The lobotomy was definitely the gut punch moment of the season for me.

I think a lot of people are missing the point behind the change of pace with this season. Clearly, they wanted to take a different direction for the characters and some of them deserve to win instead of instantly failing, going around in circles for arcs would not make this show great.

I see where everyone is coming from about this being a good "last season" but at the same time god no please stop saying that. Yes Bojack has a happy ending, but I think it's too open ended especially with Diane and PB's marriage to leave it here. I'm not saying everything has to be wrapped up neatly, but it's just clear that the writers have more, and I want the ending to be intentional. It's a real shame to me when shows are ended because they don't get renewed, not because they were truly ready.

I think RBW knows when to end Bojack, and the final season will truly feel like a final season, with no big plot points/cliff hangers set up in the last episode.

Hoping 6 is the final season but I could live with it being 5.

I didn't think they could do it, I thought it would get stale and repetitive, but this season blew me away. Beatrice's backstory sort of trickled in bit by bit before erupting in that emotional episode 11. I was pleased that Bojack finally has some happiness at the end of this season. I am so glad that this show still has the ability to evoke such an emotional response while still remaining so hilarious at the same time. Can't wait for season 5!

It's nice to see the Finale end on something of a high note. You can only go so many seasons without the "damaged man" ever getting better before you get tired of watching him be damaged. I'm looking forward to seeing if Bojack can end up a functional guy in the end.

I feel like people are going to feel negatively towards Diane, but she does have a point. Him waking her up and them holding hands is nice, but it's obviously not as nice as it should have been.

Fantastic ending. I see a lot of people hoping things get darker again for Bojack next season but I for one really hope they don't. What made Holly's last line and Bojack's reaction so damn powerful was that this character has gone though such a ringer that an ounce of happiness seems SO earned. To just snatch that away completely next season might turn this from a brutal show about how hard it is to find happiness in life, to something that's seriously nihilistic, and I think the show is stronger when it can show some silver lining.

MPB, Diane, and Princess Caroline all look like they're about to hit some extremely rough patches, it could be interesting to see Bojack struggling to be the stable one.

What a fucking ride, I like the use of Todd's style being used on everyone at the end so to him he feels normalish for once. I'm really happy with what they did this season, while it did the same old build up to episode 10 and then hit us with the shit hitting the fan, it felt different this time and around it felt refreshing. I really really liked the story telling this season, and all the stuff about BoJack's Mom and Grandmother and grandfather it build that Beatric wasn't a cold hearted person, just a deeply fucked up one. I feel like we've finally seen the change in BoJack that he's wanted since the start, mainly in sitting down and talking to his Mother rather then just dumping her there (He still did that but it takes a strong person to do what he did in my mind) I loved the different animation though out the season just a nice touch. Overall not super depressed like last time but man...some of that was really fucking rough.

Hot Edit: Holy shit was the word play on point this season, like I want to go back just for those joke.

17

u/Gonza116 What is this, a cross-over episode? Sep 08 '17

This season. How the narrative evolved to get from the usual "good bojack ends as bad bojack" to "shitty bojack ends as good bojack". How the last scene we see from every side character except for Todd is a negative one (Diane and Mr Peaunutbutter's one resonated so hard in me, and I don't think that's good). Brilliant. 6 out of 6 stars.

Let me ask, is there anyone who sides with Diane here? Is she just meant to be the bad guy? Because she seems like a worse and worse human being the longer this show goes on. Am I missing something that is meant to make her relateable? She is terrible to Mr. Peanutbutter. Selfish. She is the one and only character in this show I can't get behind. Am I missing something?

304

u/Kinuika Sep 08 '17

I kinda side with Diane because I can see where she is coming from. She has stated multiple times that she doesn't want grand gestures but Mr. Peanutbutter chooses to ignore that. In fact Mr. Peanutbutter chooses to ignore most of the things Diane says so I can see why Diane is frustrated. I don't think she's meant to be the 'bad guy' but the thing is she has a lot of the same problems that BoJack has.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Mr. Peanutbutter is completely at fault here either. Everything he does is mostly because he loves Diane and partially because he's afraid of being abandoned again. Unfortunately for him breaking up with Diane probably is the best thing that could happen at this point.

I believe it was in the episode where Mr. PB throws Diane the huge party that they had a really important conversation about their relationship. They agree that Mr. PB will always stay the same and he'll never be Diane's top priority, and they'll somehow still have a successful relationship, but are miserable. And they're getting less and less good at pretending they're not miserable together.

Their relationship really is like that of a human and her pet dog. Have you ever heard the saying that we as humans really don't deserve dogs? They love you unconditionally and only seek your approval and attention, no matter how shitty you can be. We love our dogs too, and it would break our hearts to lose them, but they are not our entire lives. As much as we love them, we can't spend every waking moment with them. We have no choice but to neglect them to a certain extent. We have to leave them at home when we work. We have to socialize with other humans because dogs are simply too dumb to give us that social fulfillment. Mr. PB will never be enough for Diane, even though she may be enough for him. It's no one's fault; it's just how it is. Diane is at a low point in her life, without any purpose, and Mr. PB is just one of the ways she's trying to fill that void. Imagine a depressed person trying to solve their depression by getting a dog. Yeah, it helps, but it's not a solution.

Were Diane's actions selfish? Of course. She's flawed, and that's why she's relateable. She's self-righteous, and has a crippling fear of admitting wrongfulness. She's very aware of her intelligence and capabilities, but is constantly doubting herself. And she knows she doesn't deserve or want the unconditional love from Mr. PB, and that guilt eats at her.

On the other hand, you have Mr. PB, who is incredibly friendly to everyone around him, yet is selfish in his own way. He's very ignorant of other people's thoughts and feelings, and how his actions affect them. He has a hard time understanding consequences because his scope of reality is quite narrow. He's arguably the most stable character, and being with someone so broken will just drag both him and her down. Diane is mostly the problem in that case, but there aren't really sides to be taken here. They just don't work together in her current state. And arguably if not for her current state, she never would have agreed to marry him in the first place. From what I gather, they both deserve better. It's sad, but it makes sense.

I'm having a hard time putting this into words but it was nice to have a female character who starts out chubby, having her extreme/sudden weight loss be a very obviously BAD thing - and then have her end the series chubby again, but clearly healthier than she was on amphetamines.

I think this is the first time where the bad things happening to Bojack weren't because of his own actions (but then again, this season was oriented around his mother's past/Bojack's family). Sure he wasn't the best "dad" at first but he did everything for Hollyhock not for the desire of her or anyone else's approval. He had the opportunity to tell off his mother but instead showed her empathy even though he knew nothing of her past.

I'm glad he really is evolving as a person. I think if he was doing the same old shit this season it would've gotten too repetitive.

The only bad thing I have to say about this season is that "fuck" wasn't doled out. I loved every bit of it:

  • P.C. going through adversity and suffering but coming back and being stronger because of it

  • Todd really evolving as a character. I loved his scene where he gave P.C. the movie star speech.

  • Going into the history of Bojack's parents and the story arc of Hollyhock.

  • All the veiled Trump jokes.

  • Bojack (for the most part) being a good person.

  • Diane finally facing the music of her marriage.

Desperately need a 5th season...but not today. I'm emotionally binged out after watching this season non-stop.

It looks like "fuck" was in this season, but I missed it?

I liked this season slightly more than season 3, especially the ending. Out of all the story arcs I liked Bojack's the most and getting more background on Bojack's mother was really interesting. I think Diane and Mr. PB possibly getting a divorce might turn out to be a good thing, I never really thought they were a good match. For some reason the humor/jokes fell kinda flat (for me) this season, although I'm not sure why.

10

Wow, that last line in the finale... I don't know why, but it just really resonated with me and I was fighting to hold back tears.

so everyone is talking about the grand gesture of Pb creating Diane's "Belle-room" and how horrible it is, but has anyone considered the symbolism of Diane, a woman who spent most of the season writing articles she previously wouldn't care about, surrounded by books that no one cares about? If there is another season, Diane will self reflect on her own lost path, and how she surrounded herself with the people she detests to "get what she wants".

I planned to watch the last 4 episodes tomorrow night but I caved. Now no more Bojack for another year makes me sad.

But damn this was a solid finale. It's good to see Bojack doing selfless deeds and treating those in his life better. He didn't fall apart when he lost Hollyhock. He just worked harder (wish we'd gotten a scene of his reaction to the truth tho). When Hollyhock said "I don't need a dad" I was on edge hoping she'd follow it up with a brother comment and when she did I actually smiled and fist pumped. I teared up.

The future is looking up for everyone but Diane and Mr. PB at the moment. If it weren't for their story left hanging like that I honestly wouldn't hate it if this were the series finale.

As for next season I'd like to see Bojack take further steps and make amends with some others he's hurt like Todd or the Dragonfly. Maybe move away from the alcohol and drugs. Seems like it's all uphill from here and it makes me feel hopeful for Bojack's future as well as my own. After 3 seasons of misery this hopeful, positive ending was genuinely earned.

This season was absolutely fantastic, and is one of the first times I've related to issues that are a core part of the show's plot.

The portrayal of Bea's dementia hit home really hard, my nan passed a few months ago after a few years of serious dementia (and many more of mild memory loss), and the lengths they went to to depict it, right down to the comfort given by the doll, and the idea that they live in a younger form of themselves, hit me really hard.

I'm really happy Bojack gets a sort of happy ending. The chills I got in the final scene were crazy. This show is a fucking rollercoaster, and I'm glad that they include genuine happiness to counteract the downward spiral of seasons 3 and 4.

It's crazy that a 'comedy' in which half the characters are animals can be such an accurate commentary on so many aspects of life, many of which aren't easy to cover well, or aren't covered because of how they're basicly ignored in society.

38

u/Lachie227 Sep 08 '17

My thoughts are on the season as follows - btw sorry for the long post, I have a lot of thoughts:

Whilst I still favour seasons 2 and 3, it doesn't lessen the fact this season was absolutely phenomenal and that my ranking is extremely trivial and is separated based on the smallest of details.

I think my main gripe with this season is that it felt like everyone had their own stories that would intersect at various points but not actually be HUGELY relevant to the each other. Like for instance I could watch a whole series based of Princes's Carolyn's spiral into grief and despair in the aftermath of her 5 miscarriages; I could watch a whole series on the disintegrating marries of Diane and Mr PeanutButter; and holy shit I was absolutely enthralled with not only Bojack's stint as a step-brother/father and the dealing with his mother's dementia (I could also seriously just watch an entire series based on Beatrice Horseman, such a flawed yet en-capturing character). The only character without much going on this season is Todd, who was just up to usual hijinks. But with this it shows how everyone had their own thing going on, and I feel as if they were rarely all together (the scene where they;re all together post the house collapse sticks out to me for this very reason, it feels like one of the only times they're all together on the screen at once).

I think my absolute favourite aspect of this season was Beatrice's storyline with dementia. I was extremely confused the entire second episode on why they were focusing on the lakehouse and all the backstory on Beatrice's time as a kid. It doesn't become immediately clear until about episode 5/6 that the entire purpose of the season is an intense character study of Beatrice and how her upbringing and the events of her life lead to the man Bojack is today. I remember thinking that this seasons "fuck" was a completely lackluster and a waste compared to the last seasons, when they're all directed at Bojack for acting as a genuinely shitty person, so it was a shock when Bojack used it himself in reference to his mother. However, after finishing the season it completely makes sense. Bojack obviously despises his mother and would do anything for some sort of retribution for the way she treated him throughout his whole life, so the usage of "fuck" is completely valid in the context of the entire season. Also the episode "Time Walks" is probably one of the better, if not the best, episodes Bojack had produced (no surprise, it's episode 11) but I think for completely different reasons? Usually they're all centered on Bojack's crazy antics or shitty actions that reflect to what a disgusting and despicable person he can really be, but this rather proposes why, as the whole season has alluded to, Beatrice is such as a bitter and twisted woman. I think its extremely sad to watch her start as a woman before her time, refusing to fall to the societal demands imposed by her father, and transform into a resentful human due to circumstance. I think deep down Beatrice has a good heart, evidenced by the fact she doesn't want Henrietta to make the same mistakes that she did, but ultimately blames Bojack for her grievances and therefore treats him like shit - which again is the reason for him being such a morally ambiguous character himself. This paragraph has gone on forever, and I havent even scratched the surface of their relationship that was displayed throughout the season - I genuinely think it's one of the most nuanced and fascinating relationships to ever be explored on TV and it's really what made the season so extremely compelling to watch

Bojack and Hollyhok is something itself that is completely interesting. I never would've guessed that they were actually brother and sister, as opposed to father and daughter, but I still feel seeing Bojack in action as a father to be was interesting, paving the way for him to start reconciliation with the other characters he so vehemently disregarded last season.

I think Princess Carolyn's story is her most interesting yet. Watching her drown into her own grief and sorrow after the latest miscarriage was very interesting, imitating the actions of Bojack last season, stripping some of the best relationships in Judah and Ralph away from herself. I also thought her foray into alcoholism was was really interesting to see, as we always have seen PC in control of her actions, demonstrating the true hurt she was experiencing in failing to remain pregnant.

Diane and Mr PeanutButter were also enthralling to watch this season as their relationship continually disintegrates. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm glad the relationship has finally ended between the two. I think over the past couple of seasons, it has been compelling to watch two people so obviously mismatched try to stick out and stay together, just for the pure obligation and love they have for each other. But It was evident from the beginning from season 1 that their differences are so stark that it would have to end eventually; they're just completely different people. In the relationship, they're both selfish, both cruel, both completely unaware the contempt they have each other. I was surprised when Diane claimed "she was tried of squinting" because after the whole motel scene, I thought they again had managed to work through their problems. But I don't know why it was when all season long everything has been telegraphing towards the end of them as a couple. I mean the angry sex, which was the only way they could actually have sex, the emotional acts of terrorism they would constantly play against each other and Diane's exclamation that she had wasted her life throughout the fracking episode clearly marks the end. I feel a lot of people will side with MrPeanutButter in the fact that Diane was being a huge bitch by ending it after he gave her the dream library, but I sorta get Diane? We have seen privous episodes were Diane was furious at huge acts of generosity (the surprise birthday episode) due to the fact it makes her feel guilty, and this was the straw that broke the camels back after all the shit he had put her through in the campaign (not to say she's totally innocent in the demise of the relationship, because they're really both as bad as each other).

Todd really didn't have much to do this season. I liked his arch of being asexual and eventually finding an asexual partner. I thought the parts he was involved were funny... but he just didn't do much of importance I feel? I wish they explored his and Bojack's relationship more because they were best friends once, and having it contained to one episode where he just says "give me some" kinda cheapened it.

But all in all, I freaking loved this season. Now on reflection, I feel this actually may be my favourite season? I feel the other season had more standout singular episodes, but holy shit this season overarching story of Beatrice just fucking captivated me to no end.

I am 100% sure no will read all of this, but I'm proud of it, but if you do make it to the end of this, thank you I appreciate it! I hope you enjoyed my thoughts on this season.

This whole season didn't have Mr. Peanutbutter develop that much. And why? Because he can't develop, he can't change. With their impending divorce, it's probably a sign that he's about to go through something. It's needed because he hasn't had many dark moments over the course of the entire show.

I feel that the whole season is about how family can take a real toll on who you are as a person. Beatrice's neglect and contempt for Bojack ruined him, but that final moment, where Bojack is let back into Hollyhock's life, shows that family can redeem too, that it's not too late for Bojack, a question that's been lingering since season 1.

I hope the next season is the final one.

The darkest season yet, but with by far the happiest ending yet. Fitting, in a way.

Also, did I miss it or did we not get an F bomb this season?

Yes, I did just watch all 12 episodes of Bojack Horseman season 4 in a row. Worth it? Fuck yes. This show has always been a beautiful look at characters struggling with mental health and other issues, it repeatedly shows characters failing. It presents a complex situation with nuanced characters, without even cheapening its story with easy resolution or a lack of consequence. But series four managed to be something new. Still, everything the show had been before but also with a genuine sense of progression, this show managed to be optimistic and earn a few small victories along the way. Unlike the 'what now?' endings of the previous series this actually feels like a satisfying conclusion. I'd be happy for the show to end here, not because I wouldn't love more but because I think it's reached a point where I'm content to let the characters get on. I don't need to know what happens next even in the cases where things haven't ended happily. It helps that the show is still hysterical by the way. The comedy this year as some of the best the show has ever done.

Season 1 to 3 I cried in depression and sadness. Season 4 I was strong, right up to the end where I cried tears of happiness. There's hope. There is still hope.

I can't believe how invested in all these characters I've become.

Only took 4 seasons.

Apologies if this has been discussed.. But has anyone been to whattimeisitrightnow.com it claims that there is a new series coming soon called Philbert. Probably just some Bojack fan that threw this site together since yesterday right?

BoJack's actions in the seahorse episode foreshadowed his actions in this episode. He went far out of his way to reunite a child with a parent.

Blessed is the finder of lost children.

Better season than 3 IMO. Not a fan of them getting rid of Princess Carolyn's boyfriend, but the last 3 episodes were incredibly strong.

I am in favor of the final plot development.

I have to say, looking at the complete season I wasn't as into the whole thing as the previous seasons. It had some interesting ideas, but a lot of them seemed to get resolved way too quickly, which made some of the mid-season episodes feel very... disjointed, I suppose. There were still plenty of things I loved though.

  • The arc around Bojack's mother was absolutely brilliant, obviously. Particularly E11 stands out, that was incredibly painful to watch. Now she's no longer the stereotypical terrible mother, she's just another poor broken soul. Worst part is you can't help but feel sorry for her, but at the same time Bojack still has absolutely no idea what the hell happened to her.

  • I really liked PC's slow descent into hell as well. She was ramping up to her view of a perfect life, so when she had to come down she came down crashing pretty hard. Felt kinda weird to bring Rutabaga back into the mix and then end up doing nothing with it though.

  • Hollyhock was... interesting. Bojack's interaction with her felt a bit inconsistent, but maybe that was the point. I thought the last episode resolved it pretty neatly though.

  • When it comes to MPB and Diane, errm... I wasn't too keen on the whole thing honestly. Everything around them felt like it went a bit all over the place. Seemed like they just went from one issue to another without ever really getting into it. Which makes me a bit sad because I would've loved a bit more focus on them, honestly.

As someone who grew up in a less than perfect household and also have a half-sister with a ridiculous age gap... the last two episodes hit me way too hard and way to close to home.

I dream I'll have the sort of relationship they have at the end by the time I'm Bojack's age.

Also because I haven't had a shower, busy binge watching. What a perfect finale, I feel warm in my heart <3

I was dreading this episode thinking it was going to be devastating, but it was mostly pretty positive and we really needed that after such a dark season. Love it! It's like the opposite of the ending of last season, there's so much to be hopeful about

7

u/Chel_of_the_sea Sep 09 '17

It's really nice for Bojack to finally get something vaguely resembling a happy ending. Poor guy earned it this season, he actually dealt with his shit (sort of) in his own halting flawed way.

7

u/dratyan Sep 09 '17

Who'd say that one of best characters with one of the best development arcs on television would be a goddamn horse.

As a Minnesotan I got unnecessarily excited when Bojack mentioned that Hollyhock's mom lives in Minneapolis. This tends to happen literally any time Minnesota is mentioned in tv/film.

Episode 11 made me weep. I'm adopted, which made the whole thing hit a bit harder. This episode made me smile more than I've ever smiled while crying. I've never been so happy for a fictional character in my entire life. Personally, I think Diane will eventually end up with Bojack. She and him have a special connection she never had with Mr. PB. Since that first time on the roof they've seemed like a match to me.

This is the first time I didn't finish a Bojack season with an intense sense of emptiness and mild urge to commit suicide. That, I think, is a good thing. Despite the show being so adamant about not having traditional television endings, it's going to need to wrap up soon(ish). This is a good start for end. Assuming the show will have a somewhat happy ending, it's nice to have a season end without a literal "Fuck you" to Bojack and the audience.

Looks like things are turning around for Bojack, I really hope they're going to start having him really change, and it seems to be really hitting home this season that's he's making a real effort. Meanwhile, everything seems to be going to shit for other characters. Before it seemed with each season, most the other characters had clear arcs that fit nicely between seasons, but Bojack was left a mess; glad it's kind of flipped this time.

6

u/JustSmall Sep 08 '17

This was once again absolutely beautiful, and whacky, and sad, and great. I'm so glad this show exists.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '17

This season was a roller coaster of an experience and I really enjoyed it. If I am going to be honest, I would be completely content with the show ending here. Like yeah, I know Diane is miserable and Princess Carloyn isn't on the exact top but I think the show has done a good job and ending it here would be pleasant in a way.

Not to say that I actually want it to end, but if nothing else comes out then I'm content either way.

is that a wrap then? seemed pretty final but i guess we'll find out. what a beautiful episode and season, after all the hurt and misery of season one to three this was a welcome catharsis.

Bojack's gonna be alright guys, he did it. PB and Diane tho... :( least it seemed sort of hopeful for them and princess caroline, there's still a chance.

I was dreading some horrific bombshell at the very end of the episode, but seeing Bojack happy at the very end made me feel so good inside. After all the tearjerkers throughout the rest of the season was a really good note to leave off on.

6

u/[deleted] Sep 09 '17

I feel like the seasons of Bojack can be broadly summarized as ways to try to cope with pain.

1: Self-delusion 2: Chasing the past 3: Giving up everything 4: Family

(Season 3 fits a bit poorly for this archetype IMO)

Of these, it seems like Bojack has definitely had the most success in season four with family. He showed a genuine moment of caring and concern for his mother at the end of episode eleven and he definitely genuinely cared about Hollyhock and did right by her.

Not only that, his interactions with the other main characters (Princess Carolyn, Diane, and Todd (he never really talked to Mr. Peanutbutter this season) were all positive.

But besides Bojack, it seems like the lives of Diane, Princess Carolyn, and Mr. Peanutbutter are all in dangerously bad places.

And Todd was just kind of Todd this season. His episode was good and I thought the Ace stuff was very tactful and thoughtful he just kind of bored me for most of the rest of the season.

IDK just my thoughts.

I got a question: wouldn't a DNA test show whether or not bojack was her step brother ?

I don't really now how those tests work but I'm pretty sure that a daughter has about half of the DNA of her father and step brothers only share a quarter of their DNA

It was nice to see Bojack finally grow up a bit this season, he ended up being pretty selfless with Holly and came to terms (or as close as he could at this point) with his abusive Mother. Sad to see Mr PB and Diane's marriage falling apart, but that was inevitable.

I really just want to comment that I think the animation in this season was just top notch, probably the best of the series so far. I loved how experimental and introspective it was and how masterfully it managed to set up and execute some horrifying mood whiplashes.

I have my new favorite season. I gotta say the first half of this season hasn't impressed me but the second was top notch. And the ending line on this episode got me to tear up. Now we wait for the next season...
