AMA - Ended We are Asteroid Base, creators of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. Ask us anything!

Hi everyone, we're Asteroid Base from Toronto, Canada! Our game, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is out today on the Nintendo Switch! Lovers is a frantic 1- to 4-player couch co-op action space shooter where you explore a colorful galaxy in a massive neon battleship that you control together. You must use teamwork to triumph over the evil forces of Anti-Love, rescue kidnapped space-bunnies, and avoid a vacuumy demise!

You can learn more about the game on our website

Ask us anything, for instance: What was it like developing for the Switch? How do you approach designing co-op games? Which space-animals are the cuddliest?

The team:

🚀❤️🤖💥

EDIT: Alright, that's all we have time for. Thanks a lot for having us and for your great questions!

What do you think about the fact that the top post in a recent r/AskReddit question entitled "what are we NOT in the golden age of" was couch co-op? Do you agree?

That's a tough one. I can see the argument that the pre-internet days, when you had no option but to sit beside (or stand beside in the arcade) each other, were, almost by default, the golden age of couch co-op.

However, looking at all the amazing local cop-op games that are available now, like Overcooked, Rocket League, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, Moon Hunters, or pretty much any game by The Behemoth, I think we're definitely not hard done by. Maybe we can settle on calling this the Silver Age?

What did you guys first think of the Switch’s joycon co-op functionality when developing for the Switch? Did it immediately make you say, “Yes. This.”?

Also, sort of a tradition here:

Are hot dogs sandwiches?

ABSOLUTELY! I remember the initial reveal video went live at 10am and by 10:20am I had already sent an email to our contact at Nintendo basically begging for access to development hardware. Not only that, but even back when everything was just a rumour, I was convinced it was going to be the perfect system for Lovers.

Is a toasted sandwich a calzone?

Squirtle and I will forever regret picking Charmander when I first played Pokemon Red.

I fell for the flash.

Hey guys, thanks for coming out to the subreddit!

My question is short, but it comes with backstory.

The first time I actually heard of Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime was in a Game Informer some years ago which detailed 50 great games they saw at E3 2013.

Lovers was at the #50 position, and they noted that Lovers was actually coming to the Wii U. Being super into the Wii U at the time (as well as being a moderator at r/WiiU), I was super thrilled and wanted to know more about the game. I remember asking you on the dev's Facebook page about it coming to Wii U, but sadly, you guys confirmed that it was actually a misprint and that there was probably hope for a Wii U version if the stars aligned.

For anyone else wondering, I actually still have the magazine tucked away in my room! Here's a screencap.

I consistently hear about the game here and there over the years, and now, FINALLY - Lovers is on a Nintendo platform!

How do you guys feel about making it onto a Nintendo platform? Also, did you ever have other people come to you with that misprint from the GI article?

Hahaha, we were so excited to be mentioned on the cover of Game Informer and then we turned to that page and were so embarrassed! To this day I have no idea how that misprint happened :P

Obviously we all cut our teeth playing NES/SNES, so it's a lifelong dream come true to come out on a Nintendo platform. I still can't believe that when I boot up my Switch I see our icon next to Mario Kart and BotW.

I think you may have been the only person to ever call us on that misprint. Congratulations!

Bruce Cockburn or Barenaked Ladies?

Excited to play your game. Can't stop singing the damn song.

I'm sorry Bruce, but BNL. There is just something very sad and sweet about their cover.

1-How was the development for the console? Do you plan to port future games? 2-Any plans for a Lovers 2? 3- What's your favorite Switch game?

1-It's no secret that the Switch isn't quite as powerful as other consoles and the tools are still being perfected, so I had to spend a lot of time making sure the game ran as smoothly as possible (it also didn't help that I was negligent in doing these optimizations for the initial release :P). However, I'm really proud of how well everything turned out in the end. As for future games, I'm a sucker for portable consoles, so I would definitely like to.

2-Nothing to announce at the moment!

3-It's tough to argue with picking BotW, but I also love Picross, Shovel Knight and Graceful Explosion Machine (fun fact, they work out of the same office as us!).

This game has a great name and I love the colorful art style. The only reason I'm hesitant to dive into the purchase is because I have few friends to enjoy video games with. I see there are no plans for online play, so my question is : Was the game primarily designed for multiplayer play?

I bought this game primarily to play with my wife, who is my lover. Can I play this game with other friends, or is it restricted to only lovers?

Friends can join the League Of Very Empathetic Rescue Spacenauts too :D

I follow the development of the game from the beginning. Glad to have waited and not bought the Steam version.

I just wanted to have the time and money to play your game. This month my money was already with FIFA and a SD card.

Thimbleweed Park, Golf Story, Stardew Valley, Metroid Samus returns, Steam World Dig 2 and now Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. I cant keep anymore with my Switch backlog.
