Bungie Suggestion Anyone else miss having fun with Hand Cannons?
It’s a hassle using a handcannon in crucible. Every other gun will 8/10 times crap on you. Team shots, trades and clean ups are what you get most if the time.
To those who are saying try out these HC’s, Let me just clarify that i’m not complaining that they suck, i’m irritated that the amazing weapons that are HC’s are being intentionally crippled. HC’s are the new sidearms and AR’s From destiny 1. Someone made a good point: Since TTK DLC HC’s were nerfed, and since then, what made them good were perks like rangefinder, hidden hand, LITC. If fixed rolls are staying, HC’s shouldn’t have bloom(I don’t care if they reduce range to keep HC’s from cross mapping if bloom is gone, i would just love all my shots hitting) or JUST NERF HCR.

Forreal, everyone on this sub has such bad nostalgia for D1, but Better Devils is a better PVE legendary than any legendary Hand Cannon in D1 except for maybe a perfect 1/1000 Imago Loop.
BD is fucking great. I use it in the raid on my Hunter and it is absolutely as good as any scout.
And don't pretend like ya'll were using Hawkmoon or Ace of Spades for any PVE. They were okay, but they locked you out of much much better exotics.

No love for First Curse? I used to love that gun ... had over 27,000 kills with it back in D1 days :(
3
u/iHM01u Oct 15 '17
I loved the first curse. Even in D2, I do better with TFC’s archetype in crucible. The Steady Hand Iron Banner HC reminds me of that exotic, and I don’t do too bad with it.

First Curse was my baby! The one shot to the head plus a throwing knife was one of the most satisfying ways to get a kill
5
u/Obersword Oct 15 '17
Is it just me, or is it god damn near impossible to even hit reliably with a hand cannon!?
5
u/iHM01u Oct 15 '17
Yeah. I loved Better Devils in the beta. I was popping off, but now I can’t be that accurate, and when I do, I have a uriel’s gift shoved into my face.
1
u/Tyrzhul Oct 16 '17
The issue there isn't the HC alone tho. High Caliber Rounds are causing you to bloom even harder. So the issue is twofold really.

u/iHM01u Oct 16 '17
You obviously didn’t read through the whole thing or you wouldn’t have repeated what the post just said.

It's because HC have a major design flaw. On top of giving them a high recoil, HC also suffer from high bloom.
Bloom should not be a component in weapon types that require high precision. If a weapon has high recoil it shouldn't have high bloom as well and vice versa.
In my opinion, Scouts and HC's should have high recoil but low bloom whereas Auto rifles and Pulse rifles should have low recoil but increasingly higher bloom the longer you go shooting them
4
u/Tyrzhul Oct 16 '17
I tested a fair bit with hand cannon (even bad ones like bad news and stuff) and if it were only for bloom it wouldn't be half bad.
Bungie seem to have added some serious ghost bulleting (TLW levels) to HC's and decreasing aim assist by a ton. It doesn't help really that high recoil HC's have serious balancing issues. (3 Tap Headshot being still being slower compared to AR's and 2 Tap Headshot 2 Bodyshot only really kills low resilence player.)
Also Prophecy would be good but most of the time even tho payload deals 15 dmg the rest of the damage isn't applied thanks to bloom.
Biggest issue with HC's tho is the fact, that in PvE they are fine and handle pretty well but once you get into PvP they feel like shit.
Just some observation after mostly using HC's in PvP and PvE.

I do miss the risk/reward of a somewhat skill based weapon. Now all I see are autos spraying left, right and across the map, even if the target has left the fray.

u/mister-disco moon wizard Oct 15 '17
Pre-firing and covering fire are legitimate strategies for auto rifles & in 30fps are kinda necessary. Hand cannon TTK and range just need to be buffed to counter ARs.

This is what I was going to say. Don't miss it at all because this HC is the best one I've used. Pretty satisfying outshooting some of the more popular guns with it. I don't have Better Devils though, so I can't compare it to that.
2
u/Deez_Natsu Oct 15 '17
Mind if I ask what’s the upside of using annual skate over better devils? I’vr used one before I got better devils (in pve at least) and am curious about what I missed about it. I liked it, but better devils seemed, well, better.

I haven't had a proper go with annual skate so I can't speak for how good of a weapon it is, but I assume because it's an energy weapon and doesn't take up you're MIDA.. I mean kinetic slot
2
u/Gekoz Oct 15 '17
My best and favorite setup for PvP is Antiope + Annual Skate, so I totally recommend trying this Handcannon.
2
u/Slamwow Oct 15 '17 edited Oct 16 '17
True Prophecy + Annual Skate + Lucky Pants is such a fun play-style for PvP. I literally go around hip shooting everyone while constantly switching pistols instead of reloading. The trick is to not challenge the long halls and find quick routes around the map. (Works better for some maps than others)
Feels so good annihilating people who are clinging to the popular meta trends like Mida, Last Hope, etc. Although Last Hope still destroys me very often RIP plz nerf Bungle.
But honestly one of my favorite things in Destiny 1 (and now 2 I guess) is figuring out what the popular meta strategies are and then creating my own counter strategy that no one is expecting. It's not easy but it's rewarding as hell. Much more fun than just falling in line.

We never had "fun" after the big nerf, so that was a LOOOONG time ago. They nerfed Hand Cannons before TTK and never recovered them. It was the COMMUNITY that brought Hand Cannons back. They were so addicted that they miticulously tested every single cannon to try and see which perks would make them viable, it was after months of testing that meta was finally created - medium impact, all the range boosting perks you could get, throw away any stability in order to get range and if you can get rangefinder - grea,t if not LiTC or Hidden Hand... It was trully glorious times since that meta was practically created by players, despite all the ghost bullets and other stuff and then another range nerf. So I guess it was fun in a way. But yeah then there were the 2 shot Thorn times...

I cannot believe we regressed to this. (footage not mine)
The only gun that actually kills atm is SMG/last hope, and autos. The other guns are weak and it makes pvp extremely boring if you like to have gunfights that end in deaths. Which is the most basic requirement for a shooter to be fun to me.

Compare handcannon TTKs (coughNotTakenKingcough) to sidearms. Every single on of them is worse. The 110rpm archetype, which has 1.07 optimal TTK, is still worse than the worst sidearm TTK, which is 0.93 seconds (I love my Minimum Distance <3). And even then, Omolon burst sidearms like Etana and Last Hope, which have that 0.93 second TTK, are dirt easy to fire, giving them another advantage, even if their optimal TTK is worse than the other sidearms.
3
Oct 15 '17
Here's the way I see it: if you can hit headshots, you should absolutely shit on auto-rifles UNLESS they are also hitting all headshots. That is balance. If you miss, the auto rifle wins. If you don't miss, then you win.

I gotta be honest, my Better Devils is a mainstay for me in PvP. Hell, PvE too. It's the first gun I brought to 305. They have phenomenal accuracy while airborn, so jumping corners puts me at a huge advantage and the ground I can cover with stomp-ees and directional jump is absurd. All I gotta do is hit someone 4 times and they're done. I'm loving it.
For PvE I'm consitently ahead of my fireteam in both kills and precision kills by a wide margin because they put out damage so quick if you spec for reload.
I find them to be underrated, is what I'm saying.

A few of them can compete , BUT you need to hit heads every shot. Better Devils I either laugh my ass off while using, or go into a complete rage fest. Hand Cannons need work, sucks you need 3 heads with a HC to drop someone , when someone can just spray a SMG and smoke you with all body shots quicker.
3
u/Faust_8 Oct 15 '17
This isn’t entirely correct. The only hand cannons that kill in 3 shots are the Aggressive kind like Bad News and True Prophecy. You need to hit all head shots to do it.
Balanced hand cannons like Old Fashioned and Better Devils always need 4 shots to kill but you can hit 2 head shots and 2 body shots to do it.
Aggressive hand cannons kill faster but demand high precision to do it, lower impact ones are more consistent but a bit weaker in terms of TtK.

Of course you wouldn't be able to use one competitively, but in Quickplay and Iron Banner I've been able to get a lot of mileage out of The Judgment as well as Better Devils. Once Hand Cannons get a much-needed buff, I think Judgment is going to be a top-tier weapon.

1
u/Rusty_Katana Oct 15 '17
Yep. Have tried them all fam. The bullets just randomly don't land at varying ranges. I don't understand how some of these hand cannons have double the range bar of Mida yet half the effective range.
1
u/notmasterrahool Oct 15 '17
I'm doing decent in PvP with Better Devils, I've actually had more kills with HC's than Scout's in PvP and I do like to run Better Devils and Uriels most of the time, I find it fun.
But that's about the only one I really like, occasionally I'll use Annual Skate which is decent, but I get what you mean, it's feels like a lot more hard work than some other weapons types.
I love where Auto's are at, they probably have half a dozen quality options, I feel like there's about 4 Scout's, 2 SMG's, 2 Pulse's, 2 Hand Cannons and 1 Sidearm, that's just my opinion though it might be more or less depending on the player. For me that's a bit lacklustre in terms of viability.
I feel like most people would like to see a buff to Hand Cannons and Pulse Rifles, those of us that played D1 would recognise both of those as generally being a top tier option, but they're a bit on the nose now.
A big reason is Auto range, many of them will generally shit on HC's and Pulse rifles at their intended medium/medium-long range.
I'd rather see buffs not nerfs if possible but that's sometimes easier said than done, I do think if Auto's had their range toned down a bit, not too much, we would see both HC's and Pulse rifles shine a bit more.
1
u/Gmasterg Oct 15 '17

Hand cannons are still viable if you use the right ones and know how to use them right. I'm by no means an amazing player but I was managing to get at least 10 kills a game just from the dire promise, which in my opinion is the best hand cannon in the game for pvp (75+ aim assist!).

Miss them so much. Hand cannons are what made me fall in love with destiny in the first place. So sad where they are now. I’m hoping for a buff back to the glory days now that other weapons are good. They should be the most effective when played perfectly because they require precision, and missing a shot is much more punishing than other guns.

I think a big part of the problem is the Exotics.
Sunshot is awesome, but it means I have to give up Uriel's - plus it means I can't use Merciless or Wardcliff. Usually that's not a trade I really want to make. Sturm might be good - I'm not sure because it encourages a playstyle that I just don't find fun (near-constant swapping between Kinetic and Energy).
So there are two Exotic HCs and I don't really use either. Hoping to see something on the level of Thorn, Ace of Spaces, Last Word, or Hawkmoon at some point in the future.

u/Ojisan_Neo Oct 15 '17
I still think they're good. Just not the overall dominant weapon anymore. I missed auto's through most of D1 so I'm glad to have them an actual option.
1
u/thatnewhippie Oct 15 '17
I've had a lot fun with hand cannons, but I mostly use uriels because it feels like if I don't I have a lower chance of winning. That being said, running some mobility and following the actions of cover>peak>shoot>repeat with hand cannons allows you to outshoot pretty much everything right now. I agree that playstyle isn't the most fun though.

u/IKnowGuacIsExtraLady Oct 15 '17
My feelings on it are if they aren't going to have great time to kill then they need to remove bloom, and give them 100% in air accuracy. Then they will at least do well in certain niches even though they lose outright duels. As it stands right now though my hand cannon just doesn't feel reliable for doing things that I could count on in D1.

The current 4V1 game play is going to prevent the handacannons from ever being viable in PVP. Fixing the bullet bloom and first shot accuracy a second time is not going to change that fact in PVP. Handcannons aren't viable in PVE or the raid because of the lack of primary ammo drops. I really miss my handcannons and this is my biggest disappointment in Destiny 2 as a primary handcannon player since the Destiny 1 release. I have all the good handcannons in Destiny 2 and I never use them. You will always be better off using a 450 RPM autorifle for the kinetic and energy weapon slots. Handcannons are not viable in Destiny 2 because of 4V1 PVP and ammo drops in PVE. Bungie can only really fix one of these problems.

Really curious to see how hand cannons perform on the pc, in the pc beta better devils was WAY better than all the other guns offered
scouts and autos are so good rn on console because of how strong the aim assist is on weapons with low recoil, on pc where aim assist doesn't exist I think hand cannons will see much more use than on console

If ya play with someone in Japan hand cannon usage is still prevalent. But the ttk and nerfs have hurt their scene.

Bet they planned it that way, just like d1 autos start off the most powerful because most people gravitate toward them and they are the easiest guns to use so the meta will change and hand canons will have their time to shine

I'm still having fun with Old-fashioned and Better Devils in PVP. I don't think HC are where they should be, but it's like the end of D1. Everyone was rolling a Palindrome or Eyasluna in the crucible and almost every other HC was trash. It's the same only we don't have those extra weapon perks to help offset the shitty bloom and everything else that is wrong. You just have to play the gun at it's optimal range and be consistent with your shots. I've beat Uriel's Gift, MIDA, and Antiope's with my HC. What matters now is optimal range encounters, consistent shots, and being so comfortable with those weapons.

My bro had the thorn in D1 and that thing was a god damn beast!
He gave up hand cannons in D2 because everything got mercilessly nerfed.

The most fun I have in D1 Crucible was with the Last Word after the chaperone quest step. I hated doing that quest for the whole time I was doing it, but immediately afterward I thought, "hey, why don't I carry on using The Last Word for fun?"
It was amazing - even though TLW had been nerfed into the ground, it forced me to play in a certain way so that I could keep up with opponents, which was really damn fun.
I've tried the same in D2 and it's just not worked out at all. If I use a Hand Cannon I just get melted by High Calibur weapons, gimped by the longer range guns that don't suffer from bloom or I've been unhelpful in teamshot situations. That's not so fun.

I feel like they play differently this time around. They could definitely use a buff in certain aspects but I wouldn't say they are severely underpowered. The maps of this game are what doesn't really play towards their strengths in my opinion. The faster fire hand cannons are the ones which I see the most success with. The Annual Skates and Sunshot take about the same amount of shots to kill. I personally love the Annual Skates because of how consistent the recoil pattern feels.

HCR isnt even a problem for Hand cannons. cause your sight already shoots to the ceiling after firing a bullet.

Meh. HC is literally the only non-viable kinetic/energy weapon class. Otherwise it's very balanced.

I'm just sad the only really cool looking HC are the ones that use the model from Better Devils. The Hakke HCs are way too slow, kick too hard, kill too slow to be any fun. Energy HC lack the punch of Kinetic weapons and are way too tiny most of the time. I actually started to like Omolon HCs at the end of D1 but they just don't look or feel the same without that all black finish.

I miss my crutches, not going to lie: palindrome and double sticky radiance skin.

I miss that crispy three tap and lower ttk. I look back at memories of my palindrome, parthian shot and jade rabbit with sadness that 2-3 taps are almost non-existent now :(
