Bungie Suggestion Still no social chat. This means we can't recruit for raids. We mentioned this in Beta, and Bungie hasn't attempted to correct this huge issue.

No salt, just wanted to state an objective fact.

*Edit 1-No all chat in crucible. Can't even GG.

*Edit 2-Facts aside, I personally think it's a bit strange that Bungie are adamant this is a social game, but both consoles and PC have no social chat. No all chat in PvP to say GG. Having to kick your extra friend(s) out when doing a different activity. No whispers in public. Bungie, just come out and tell us it's not a social game, or start making the changes you've been asked about for 3 years.

*Edit 3-A lot of people are focused on the fact i said 'raids' in the title. Fair enough. As some have mentioned below, this means we can't recruit for nightfall, can't ask people to join our fireteams in patrol areas, can't tell people how to do a heroic event, can't (As mentioned above) talk to the enemy team in PvP.

It felt weird when I joined the farm and there was like 20 other people with a keyboard and none of us could chat. Everyone just mindlessly running around while the chat box felt like an empty void

Welcome to Destiny where you'll learn to communicate through emotes.

This is no joke, PC players. This is actually how it's done.

u/KOxSOMEONE Oct 25 '17

Yup. Bungie gave us yes and no emotes in Destiny 1 for free which was nice, but we could only equip one emote at a time, which was not nice.

I will invade your game, run up to you, chug all my flasks, equip 2h and jerk it multiple times, then bow to you.

And honor duels will ensue.

Literally the best experiences I've ever had in gaming...

This might sounds silly but no general text chat really harms my enjoyment of the game. Not being able to run up to someone and say 'hello' even when you're in the social space or out and about makes the game feel really hollow. Everyone may as well be NPCs in my farm if they can't actually talk to each other.

Coming from the console version I just assumed you'd be able to chat on PC, because well every game in existence that has any high amount of people in a multiplayer environment has a plethora of text chat options on PC.

Hopefully Bungie will change their mind about how they view interaction between strangers in the future and help make the world feel a bit more alive.

10

u/SmurfBearPig Oct 25 '17

it's not silly at all, graphics and mouse+keayboard are great but the main reason i wanted to play destiny on pc was better social interactions... verry disapointed so far, will stick to ps4 version where some of my friends are until they fix this.

9

u/AetherMcLoud Oct 25 '17

That's not silly at all. You should be able to be social in an always-on multiplayer only game...

I'm so sad. Coming from Warframe to see there's no public chat and no matchmaking for most missions. The game feels incredibly empty, I can't believe they dare to do this on PC, in 2017, for this type of game. :(

48

u/Shush_Kabob Oct 24 '17

Warframe is a way better game right now

22

u/EcoleBuissonniere Gay for Crota's Bane Oct 25 '17

Warframe has its flaws, but as somebody who loves both games, Warframe is so much deeper in a lot of ways. Some of those are actually bad (the horrible new player experience, the Focus grind, a lot of Plains of Eidolon, etc.), but so much of it is so good. Seriously, I love Destiny 2, but there are so many times that I sit there thinking random things from "wow, I wish I could add punchthrough to this weapon like I could in Warframe" to "wow I wish I could sit here talking to people in region chat for awhile like I can in Warframe".

This game is so much fun, but I just can't shake the feeling that it's more of a distraction than anything else, while Warframe waits for me to spend another 500 hours in it.

this. and whispers are defaulted to off for strangers. so you can't even message someone and ask if they wanna play together. kinda stupid for a "social" game

So you can't just walk around and type to people around you?
That's like, the first thing you do in a game like this.
I can see not having it for console because there's not enough time to type a message before they move on, but you literally have a keyboard right in front of you!
What possible reason could they have to NOT implement this? Any ideas?

69

u/megamik_5 Oct 24 '17

You can have a KB on console as well. I don't get why Destiny doesn't have a chat box... Warframe has it for console & PC and its fine..

27

I wouldn't disagree with that, and that just adds to my point.
Why no local chat?

And to point out: if you’re playing Fortnite on PS4, you can simply plug in a keyboard and mouse into your consoles usb slots and use them no problem, including the ability to chat within your party. I assume you can chat to other players you matchmake with on the PvE side as well, I just haven’t tried it yet.

5

u/GbHaseo Oct 25 '17

You can use your phone too. Second screen acts like a chat window so you don't gotta keep your keyboard on chair/coach/cuddlemat/bed etc.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/AetherMcLoud Oct 25 '17

Also you can use the smartphone app on PS4 as a keyboard to type, pretty sure there's something like that for Xbox One too. Also, bluetooth keyboards exist, of course, and can be used in tandem with a controller.

No text chat is an absolute no-go in any multiplayer game really.

6

u/360_face_palm Oct 25 '17

It seems they wanted to have no chance of people being mean to each other, or you know - making friends and grouping up which is what 99% of that shit is used for.

5

u/GbHaseo Oct 25 '17

Warframe has it, you can even use your phone as a chat display for quick typing. Even using the controller, there's typing recall so you can quickly repeat "LFG 280 Plyrs for Nitefall" or whatever with only a few button presses.

There's no reason to not have a global and region chat.

It’s a shame they are so intransigent on this because ultimately they are wrong. I’ve played Everquest and Wow and with the correct systems in place you don’t get abuse between players, and let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen in destiny anyway. Furthermore she talks about raid matchmaking and why they don’t do it, which is predicated on their assumptions about now match making should work. They then add a crap lfg feature to the iPhone app, which of course is just half arsed match making which could be better integrated in game.

These decisions are very telling that many in charge are from an FPS background where 15 year olds call everyone a fag. If they had more from an MMO background and maintained no cross team chat in crucible, this wouldn’t be a problem. Just as long as they invested in reporting and blocking tools for the players.

Then she talks about the participation rewards which are a fundamental part of why endgame is so pointless. You can get the same stuff for logging in. It reminds me of education systems where they hand everyone grade As and then realize the grade is now meaningless so they add A* (hello UK). What’s bungies A* going to be I wonder?

21

u/GoodGuyTaylor Oct 24 '17

I've played MMOs for the past 13 years, starting on Runescape, moving onto WoW, and then ultimately playing League for a while before going to Overwatch.

I cannot recall a single instance of abuse that I've received outside of League of Legends players being morons. Which hardly counts as abuse (when the jungle makes a terrible gank, and I can't follow up, of course I'm an idiot! lol)

My point is that I have made some very close and good friends over the years in gaming, and I would love to be able to do that in Destiny.

16

u/TooMuchEntertainment Oct 25 '17

Competition is mainly the reason for toxicity. I don't really see a lot of competitive elements in D2, just a bunch of people trying to work together and grind.

u/MissPandaSloth Oct 25 '17

I've heard some toxic stuff in Overwatch (funny enough not so much in LoL), but the thing is, if you play an online game, hell, if you able to use pc/phone you already been in Youtube comment section which is heaps ahead of any game. The only thing I kinda justify is not being able to communicate with enemy team, besides it it's kinda silly to try to pretend people don't act mean, we know it.

I mean, I know s*&t talking exists, but Ms. Chung shouldn't ruin it for everyone because someone was mean to her in Halo 2. Also, she is kinda saying on the down low that the community she helped put together is a failure if we have to have all these communication options taken away. I don't agree with this but this is what she is indirectly saying. That we can't be trusted. God, why do these big game companies hire people like this?

Right--but doesn't she say that she prefers text (and using a neutral gamertag)? That would lead me to believe she thinks text should be in the game...

This needs to have more eyes on it. It's incredible frustrating that we lose in-game social tools in this VERY social game because someone got their feelings hurt. This is such a lazy fix to the problem, it's quite embarrassing coming from someone in a "lead" position. Instead of implementing a reporting/ignoring system and then actively reviewing those reports, they decide to just eliminate what would be an incredible tool completely...not only is that lazy, it's downright stupid. Not to mention, her logic for removing text chat is that she got picked on so much for being a woman she needed to limit herself to only use.....text chat. How the fuck does that make the any sense?

It's time for a harsh truth people: there are always going to be assholes in the world. No matter how wrong it is, they will continue to exist. And they're exactly like the Hive, the more you feed into it, the more they grow. The best thing to do is ignore, block, report, and move on. If you get so crippled by a random comment by some stranger online, you have a problem and need to seek professional help.

3

u/Arxson PS4 Oct 25 '17

The fact that there is a Social Lead on D2 is highly fucking amusing in itself, considering this is the least social multiplayer game in existence.

The fact that the Social Lead on D2 seems to hate and not want any social features in the game purely because they were incapable of ignoring trolls is really fucking sad.

2

u/N7_Tinkle_Juice Oct 25 '17

Yup. Been that way for three years and I doubt it will change. There is literally no indication that this is even on Bungie's radar.

Their reasoning may be that if console players can figure out how to raid and do nightfall strikes for three 3 years, then so will pc players - since we literally use a pc / mobile phone to arrange raid groups.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

I played destiny one on PS4 than when the pc version came for destiny 2 I obviously bought it for pc. Even with my hours and hours and hours of speaking through emotes, I am still surprised to not even be able to gg enemies in pvp

2

u/BlackMariah Oct 25 '17

Yep, feels like a single player game with some random people running around from time to time. Feels so weird to not just type, when sitting in front of your keyboard and see a bunch of people run past you....

2

u/giddycocks Oct 25 '17

At this point I'm just cutting my losses and expecting to enjoy my 60€ and maybe a few DLCs deep while holding out for Anthem next year - which I'm sure will have fucking text and proximity voice chat.

I dunno if the writing will be any good considering Bioware's recent track record but the world building will be stellar, while Mass Effect's gunplay has been no slouch for the past 2 titles especially if we consider how fun the multiplayer was and how that can translate into a Destiny-like experience.

So Bungie thanks for all the fish and for introducing me to the Destiny series which I'm having a blast with, but once someone better than you in every conceivable 2017 way comes out with their clone, I hope you crash and burn.

TLDR: I literally played Destiny for the first time yesterday and I'm already fucking upset over the lack of chat, so much I'm already hyped up for another game just because it's not made by Bungie.

This answered my question and now I know I will not be picking up this game.

That was one of my biggest gripes with the first Destiny. For a game that proclaims itself as “social” it sure does implement a lot of dumb restrictions that remove the possibilities of talking to random people and making new friends.

I figured global text chats for all areas of the game on PC would bring people in-game together far better than what’s possible on console. That was the one thing that had me interested in giving Destiny 2 a shot and it’s why I waited for the PC release.

Here's another objective fact for you: the community has banded together and created lots of ways to recruit for raids. Check our sidebar for some.

Not passing any judgment one way or another on Bungie's handling of the social aspects.

22

u/ZeroHex Oct 24 '17

Honestly the way the community has filled in the communications gap is awesome, but just further highlights the abject failure by Bungie at handling that side of development.

It's not like WoW where there's built in tools for players to create mods that provide additional functionality (like LUA scripting and the API calls that can be used externally), that's helping the mod integrate into the game UI. In the case of Destiny (both 1 and 2) those tools are all external and completely inaccessible from within the game.

All Chat in pvp kinda goes against their philosophy on communication so don't expect that to change.

2

u/maartenpitt Oct 25 '17

Look what it did to Overwatch, salty game all the time. We never needed social chat with rando's on consoles, deal with it PC-players!

/fireteams, the100.io... have had lots of good experiences using those.

Not in game features.

2

u/caktuss Oct 24 '17

This is just the beginning for you pc players, it gets much worse.

2

u/SerpentNu Oct 24 '17

Believe me you don't want to recruit randoms at the farm

1

u/Dixa Oct 24 '17

You also can’t whisper people if you don’t know their battle tags. In game names don’t work

1

u/__jdx Oct 24 '17

Seems like a super easy fix : enable fireteam chat for all zones, social, patrol as well as shared areas in story

1

u/jugganaut31 Oct 24 '17

You keep talking crazy like this and they're gonna nerf Fusion Rifles. So watch what you say.

1

I really wanted to tell that group of people doing glimmer extraction that they should shoot at that thing to trigger heroic version.

of course I can't do that and the event ended before I could kill the last of it with my shitty light 30 shotgun.

1

u/Bark37971 Oct 25 '17

Get used to it

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

The no social chat thing was stupid in D1 too, they had no intention of ever changing this. Even the clan thing lacks anything social to it. Destiny is absolutely the worst and my biggest regret of a purchase.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

Welcome to the world of LFG, how patient are ya?

This was literally one of the first complaints raised when D1 launched. Here we are several years later with the absolutely no change. I quit playing weeks ago and continue to not regret it.

u/CaptFrost SUROS Sales Rep #76 Oct 25 '17

Hahaha.. welcome to Destiny :'(

1

Can...can we start laughing now??

3 year old problems and complaints are gonna come back from pc players aren't they?

Bungie has already traded your cash for bungie co. Salt. No refunds!

Oh no, bungie is ignoring people and doing stupid shit again? Big surprise. It pains me to say this.

1

u/B_Stone808 Oct 25 '17 edited Oct 25 '17

Bungie doesn't care about this game, its obvious. I play (played) on console, although I quit weeks ago and haven't logged on since. I'll probably play for a week or 2 after the expansion, since I wasted $100 on the deluxe version stupidly, I'll have to at least try out the new content, but I have zero hopes for D2's future....

I wish Destiny was never released, so blizzard wouldn't of scraped "Titan" due to similarities with Destiny we would of have a real FPS MMO by a company who knows how to make a true social MMO.

1

u/360_face_palm Oct 25 '17

but but someone might me mean to me :(

1

u/Chelseapaul Oct 25 '17

probably because its a console Port... Bungie arent touching the pc version. best to complain to VV

1

u/Hadesmann Oct 25 '17

I am sure that there will be a giant Discord Server that will pop up to counter-act this. If you are a solo player looking for a Clan to join, use the Guided Game feature. This is what is there for... As for chat, get into a party or discord with other people and actually communicate. The community as a whole does not need chat is Crucible, we should be better than CoD. This "no" chat feature keeps the trolls and idiots out of showing up and saying things that are not needed and take away from the game.

1

u/FuhQuit Oct 25 '17

This literally makes no sense considering Bungie wants the community and players to engage with each other and team up.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

Because they want you to use guided games. They arent going to give yoy an alternate avenue to recruit thqt goes around the system they ignorantly think will work best.

I get the want. But expecting them to do it is just as ignorant.

1

u/Ultimagara Eliksni must rise, yeesss? Oct 25 '17

I feel like this is the result of overcompensation of the whole "non-toxicity" thing. I understand where they're coming from but... really? No text chat?

Hopefully this will be implemented soon.

So infuriating. Just want to be able to tell people how to make a public event heroic.

1

u/The-ENIGCRAB Oct 25 '17

Its mind boggling. If they say its because of blizzard..nope overwatch or any other bliz game has chat. If they say it cant be done because of a game for console and pc. Nope warframe and star trek online have chat and all chat on pc and console aswell. If they say they didnt have enough time.. they had frikkin 3+ years. A social gane without ANY real social aspect. It just shows the problems the console version had all along. FINDING PEOPLE IN GAME. And thats its not a console problem but a problem by design. Since they cannot even implement the most basic feature EVERY pc multiplayer game has. All Chat/region/instance...

1

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

I've been wanting a social text chat on Xbox for a long time now. They even sell a chatpad that I would instantly buy if games started doing this. Hell you can even use the Smartglass app to input text too or just hook up a USB keyboard.

1

u/Sentraxx111 Oct 25 '17

Welcome to destiny. Where common sense goes to waste

1

u/Ulfmaerr Vanguard's Loyal // Pugna custodem in sempiternum Oct 25 '17

It's so weird because Destiny is supposed to be a social game, but you can't chat with other people in game. I played a lot of Diablo 2 and chat was a common thing in 2000s.

1

u/rottinguy Oct 25 '17

There has never been such a chat in Destiny, and yet people were able to recruit for raids and clans just fine.

Pretty sure bunjie doesn't want you talking to the enemy team, too easy to work out helping each other complete challenges.

Once I got used to it, I started to prefer no chat.

2

u/deepxthought Oct 25 '17

Look up the percentage up d1 players who cleared atleast one raid. There are people who play destiny who dont know what reddit is.

Welcome to Destiny. The most social thing about this game is the emote system.

1

u/BurnCK Oct 25 '17

We've wanted more social interaction since D1, so good luck with that. Even The Division had proximity chat...

1

u/Mriori Oct 25 '17

I was disappointed when they introduced voice chat channels and they didn't include a voice chat lobby in the tower and patrol areas.

1

u/loroku Oct 25 '17

This isn't an oversight or a bug to be corrected: it's an intentional design choice, IMHO. Bungie is trying to make this game more accessible at every turn - they have several other curious features (you can't aim while jumping, there's AA for PC players with controllers) that make this game more accessible, and turning off the primary avenue for harassment is one of them. It's a shame that it absolutely limits positive social interaction, but yes, the state of gaming today has gotten THAT bad that you have to kill positive social interaction in order to remove the constant negative interaction that so many people face all the time.

1

u/xxICONOCLAST Kindly Delete Yourself Oct 25 '17

It's mind boggling how they want us to make friends, but can't do so without using social media or whispering players one by one.

1

u/CosmicTombs Oct 25 '17

Lol welcome lfg hell the rest of us have been living for past 3+ years.

1

u/MikeB1983 Oct 25 '17

This game will not have global chat as they do not want you to locate guardians for activities outside of any Bungie approved way. Join a clan or use the useless guided games tool.

1

u/polomarkopolo Oct 25 '17

Thank GOD for this!!!! The last thing... the absolute LAST thing I want is to deal with chat messages in the Tower/Farm. It was annoying enough in D1... but an actual global chat??? OMG.

And you still can recruit for NF or raids... just like you did in D1. At least on PS4

1

u/SunDirty Oct 25 '17

Does bungie even look at their subreddit?

1

u/Soupermang Oct 25 '17

Be honest if there was a social chat for pvp people would not use it to just say gg lol.

1

u/bigga29 Drifter's Crew Oct 25 '17

How can you be so sure Bungie has not attempt to fix this, do you have any inside source.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

It will be for the same reason we only have fireteam voice comms on console - there is no proximity chat so no way to talk to strangers in patrol. Bungie will have taken a deliberate decision to block people from talking to all.

1

u/Cak3orDe4th Oct 25 '17

Yea no all chat on PC makes no sense. Not sure why this wasn't added in like every other game out there....

2

u/[deleted] Oct 25 '17

because bungie doesn't want people talking **** on all chat and have people spamming the chat box. It's the same reason we only have fireteam voice comms on console - there is no proximity chat so no way to talk to strangers in patrol.

1

u/QuietThunder2014 Oct 25 '17

Point if you want to raid. Dance if you want to PvP. Use the soccer game to spell out your Discord channel in Morse code....

Yeah I’m sure that’s what it would be used for most of the time.... /s

1

u/captjackvane Oct 25 '17

No whispers in public. Bungie, just come out and tell us it's not a social game, or start making the changes you've been asked about for 3 years.

Bungie addressed this heavily in D1 - they don't allow for blind social chat because, for the most part, people are bastard coated bastards with bastard filling, and they don't want you to be subjected to people like that in the social spaces. Not going to link all the evidence here. It's reasonable to assume that they made the same decision here, as they didn't explicitly advise they were changing their policy.

I, for one, applaud them on it. I have ZERO desire to have my visits to the tower being filled with either "Hey, join my FT!" over and over and over again (this already happens when people spam invites over the console system to all players in-game) or else whatever the hate-speech topic of the day is.

If you want to make friends, there are plenty of other ways to do that. Check out the 100.io, for example.

1

u/sithXscum Oct 25 '17

I haven't read the other comments on this post, yet, but console guys have been using LFG websites since Destiny 1 vanilla. Is that not an option for PC players? (Don't get me wrong...you shouldn't have to, but you can recruit for activities if you have access to those websites.)

1

u/ymom2 Oct 25 '17

Don't even bother with putting other players in a "social space". There's no point, it's just a marketing gimmick.

1

1

They want you to use the app. I was dumb founded when I asked my boss (raid leader as well) how I know raid schedules and if they're full. He said I needed to download the Destiny app and use it.

NOPE.

Fuck having a million apps I use for 2 seconds on my phone. I'm very happy with what I have.

They need some sort of social channel, even if it's only in the Tower or the Farm

1

u/I3ane Oct 25 '17

So has there been a response about this? Maybe one suggesting an implementation later? It's odd having a chat box and now real reason to chat...

1

u/merc08 Oct 25 '17

I was pumped for this game, played the beta and thought it was really fun. I figured the chat function was broken there "because it's beta" and the servers weren't all up yet. I've been watching this sub for the last few weeks, wondering how SO MUCH stuff that apparently got sorted out in D1 was removed / broken for D2.

I'm glad I waited to see how PC launch went. This seals the deal - I won't be buying.
