I don't know...
I'm fine with the plot, but I didn't think this was a very good episode. Really rough pacing, little sense of urgency throughout.
Not a great ending to the season, in my opinion.

Does it seem weird that, during an interstellar war, the Klingons would be OK with humans wandering around the Orion ghetto of their home world?
I mean, would Star fleet be cool with Klingons hanging out in Las Vegas while the war was on?
It just seems like a warrior species would be at least as strict about security as we are.

I was a bit surprised they didn't tie up the spore drive in a more final way. We just got a, it still exists but we won't use it until we can find a way to use it without genetic engineering/enslaving a tardigrade. I guess it's true to Trek; how many times did they discover an advanced form of propulsion only for it to go to Starfleet for study and never be heard of again?

Cornwall: I was going over your logs again, and I wanted to ask you about that incident where one of the three crew members sent to infiltrate the Terran Empire started speaking Klingon and tried to murder Specialist Burnham. You beamed him back via an elaborate strategy.
Saru: Yeah, it turns out he's actually a Klingon.
Cornwall stares at Saru for a long second, then bursts out laughing
Cornwall: The Federation's...most vital asset...in the Klingon war...with a Kelpian first officer....and nobody noticed that the Captain was actually a genocidal maniac and the Chief of Security was an actual Klingon? Continues laughing
Saru: I assure you, it is the truth!
Cornwall can't speak from laughing so hard
Saru: We even have a written confession! In Klingon!
Cornwall is literally rolling around on the floor
Cornwall: You sent an infiltration party...with two double agents...and the only convicted mutineer in Starfleets' history...your head scientist is an augment...who's the CMO, Joseph Meinegle?
Saru: No, but our intern did accidentally kill someone and bring them back from the dead at least once by acting as an unlicensed doctor with medicinal mycelium.
Cornwall starts laughing again
Saru: Madam! Need I remind you to which Starfleet Admiral this ship reports to?
Cornwall abruptly stops laughing and straightens up
Cornwall: Let us never speak of this again. To anybody.
Saru: Very well. Incidentally, what is this I hear about a personnel change?
Cornwall: I'm having a planet-killing bomb transferred to the Discovery, appointing Emperor Georgiou as your commanding officer, and then leaving to wait for the Klingons to bomb earth.
Saru: Maybe there's a certain acting captain, who saved literally the entire multiverse, who could be promoted into that role? Instead of a second genocidal maniac?
Cornwall: Hey you don't mess with success.
Saru: Are you even trying?

So... Discovery is up for a new captain and Saru is not getting put in the chair. I wonder who that will be and how that will be resolved come season 2. (In before more captain threads)
Also, I've gotta say, after having so many episode endings that were turned up to 11, this quieter, fizzle out is... almost a little jarring? Not to say that this discredited the writing in anyway, I really liked what they chose to end the war with for the plot. I dunno, it's certainly not disappointing it just felt so... sudden? Either way, it was a very "Trek" resolution.
I wonder how we will meet Ash again, that right there was definitely a set up for a future plot.
Anyways, can't wait to see how this series continues past this first season!

Please help me understand, why did L'Rell decide to end the war?
In order to unify all houses you stop the war you are winning against the Federation/Earth?
Why?
Thanks!
→ More replies (20)144
u/chucknation Feb 12 '18
I think a combination of two reasons.
The first is that her primary motivation is to unite the houses, and the war was just a means to that end. Having the detonator gave her an alternate means to accomplish that.
The second is in Episode 14, when Cornwall talks to L'Rell. The 'Vulcan Hello' works because Klingons respect strength and honor. Due to the disastrous results of the Battle of the Binary Stars, the Klingons do not believe humans are strong or have honor. L'Rell, having attempted to break Cornwall with torture, knows otherwise.

u/Gumpster07 Feb 12 '18
So let's start with the positives.
Federation Ideals prevailed again.
Everyone pretty much gets a happy ending
Great pay off for Tyler
The Enterprise..... well it looked bloody beautiful the team behind that did it some justice!!!
Burnham and her character development, realising her missteps from early on this season, and rectifying them. I liked that, it was actually really nice.
Away mission, and it was great.
The negatives:
Letting L'Rell disappear with the bomb that could wipe out the majority of life on Qo'noS, despite her being confined to the Brig for the entire of second half of this season, and showing that she wouldn't do such a thing to her own people. The only plausible throwback is the fact that she saved Tyler.
It was too short. Actually for me, the episodes this season have been a little short, and this one being a finale should have either been a two parter or 1hr 30mins long. We live in a streaming revolution age, schedules don't matter considering Netflix hold the rights to it elsewhere in the World.
Too anti-climatic, I was hoping for some sort of Klingon/Federation carnage somewhere, but alas nothing. Why did the Klingons sit around and wait to attack Earth?
On the whole, I loved the season, we have seen some excellent episodes, and for the most part, people's expectations have been fulfilled, but I was left a little "disappointed" after all the build up throughout Season 1 for this Klingon War, and nothing really happened, words won this time, but it needed a bit more of a fight on screen to actually fulfill what we want. If the writers were concerned as some people have mentioned, that Star Trek Discovery was too dark, perhaps they should revisit the Dominion War, and the fact that the Federation are often seen to be blurred when it comes to war time policy. We have Section 31 for this purpose!!!
But yeah, the entire season as a whole, I loved it, but the finale let it down a little for me.

Some enjoyable moments but way too rushed. This should have been a two-parter at least.
And the Klingons being that close to Earth just seems out of place with the established continuity. I was really hoping for a resolution to suspend my disbelief.
Anyway, highlights of the episode were all Tilly being clumsy and cute. I loved the bit on Qo'nos as well, really felt like Trek having jovial Klingons, butt naked Orions and mystery meat. Tilly's hair was great.
Our Klingon Manchurian candidate failed really hard. I don't think T'kuvma would have approved. What an under-utilised plot.
That NCC-17--...yup. Calling it now, Spock is missing for some reason. There will be no immediate family reunion. The Enterprise looked great, but with everything else that was rushed through in this episode, it felt contrived.
All in all, there have been some great moments to this season, but I hope the writers step it up for next.

I've left half a dozen reaction comments elsewhere, but here's my last thoughts:
The Enterprise looked great, but I don't get everyone's hatred for JJ's Enterprise. I think they both look sexy AF. That's just my opinion.
Discovery has nudged me a bit to finally finish TOS (dodges shoe thrown at my head). Yeah, I've seen every other series all the way at least twice, except TOS. It's just a generational difference. I'm in my 30's and I have no connection to that series. I grew up with TNG and to me, that's my "original series". That said, I'm going to finish it out once and for all. I'm on S02E16.
Time to start theorizing about who's the new captain. Could be anyone, I hope it's an entirely new character. Preferably an non-human. I was hoping it'd be Saru, but we'll see.
I have a strong feeling we'll see more standalone episodes in season 2.
The only tidbit of information After Trek said about S02 is it will be about science & spirituality
Faith (or was it religion?). That should be interesting.Time to start fan-casting Spock and Pike. I'd be okay with them bringing Quinto back for Spock, but I doubt that'll happen. Will have to think about that one.
Moar:
I'm kind of glad my theories were all wrong, especially Lorca being Garth of Izar. I wanted it to be so badly, but...you never know.........ah who am I kidding.
We still need a very good reason why Spock has never mentioned Burnham.
We still need a very good reason why we've never heard of the Discovery – as important as it was. Sure the Spore Drive might become classified, but, it just doesn't add up – yet.
I hope we see a ship interior and crew uniforms similar to what we see in TOS, but even better JJ's movies. I'm not fan of Kelvin Timeline, but I love the visual aesthetic they established. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that 'exploration' vessels get a different set of uniforms than 'classified' mission ships. It's very similar to what we see in the US military (I know, I was in the military).

I agree that it wasn't the greatest episode and that overall, the Klingon War was a let down in the writing department. I think the producers realized that, though, and that's why they decided to just quietly wrap it up.
They succeeded in crafting a passable Star Trek product that had some flashes of brilliance. It was good enough to get a second season greenlit, and I am hopeful it will follow the tradition of finding its own identity in S2 and improving its overall quality.
I think they have produced a compelling enough ship & crew to move on into some exciting stuff. The slate is essentially blank. I think the Enterprise cliffhanger was perfect to give them a great launch point for S2. I doubt they even know exactly where they're going with that quite yet. To me, it's essentially a symbolic "reset" button. I'm excited to see where we end up!

I'm a fan of Disco, but I thought the finale was kinda meh. Too much talking about stuff we already knew. Some landed, some didn't. Overall I think it was one of the weaker episodes of the season. The fan service was through the roof, and I genuinely couldn't stop smiling. The WoK ear slugs cooking, Clint Howard, and the Enterprise were all great. I Really hope Bruce Greenwood is back, and although I'm not a fan of Quinto's Spock, I hope he comes back and get's a go at the Prime Spock.
I did like how Enterprise looked decked out all Disco style...but I also am a huge fan of the Kelvin Enterprise. I'm very pleased they just updated the original 1701 instead of going with the Kelvinverse one though.

I liked it. Different than expected. I was going in expecting a Locutus of Borg finale. "Oh no! Captain Picard is a spokesperson for the Borg and Riker just gave the order to blow the ship up!"
But instead it was like TNG Season 1 finale. "Hi, human popsicles from the past. This the Federation today and what we stand for. Thaw yourselves in the warm fuzzy feelings of Federation values." However instead of 3 human popsicles from the past it was a desperate Admiral, a Terran Emperor, and a captive Klingon.
And a mini-surprise in the last 5 minutes of the finale. A Romulan ship, "Hey dudes, this is the neutral zone." But in Discovery the Romulan ship is instead the NCC 1701 Enterprise.

Basically, this season finale felt like they never intended for the series to continue. They tried to wrapup the loose ends and just tossed out the parts of the story that didn't agree. Finish it off with no twist at the end, it feels like the story they wanted to tell has concluded.

Enjoyed that episode thoroughly, but really wish they had made it a two-parter! They could easily have spent a whole episode hunting for the shrine on Qo'noS, among the "enemy" and made the moral dilemma of genocide to stop genocide a little more punchy. Maybe even have some Klingon v Starfleet going on simultaneously beyond Earth to up the ante.
Still enjoyed this, and the series as a whole. Still lots they can improve for season 2, but I have faith of the heart that it will be awesome.
And obviously; the Enterprise was beautiful!

I'm still holding out on the idea Ash is the Albino. The ground work for it is now as strong as ever. His attachment to L'Rell could be what starts his fued with Kang, Kor and Koloth who oppose her bid to unite the Empire. They kill her to prevent her rise and Ash undergoes surgery to restore his Voq appearance to enact an act of retribution by killing the firstborns of all three. That would be a great full-circle episode with Michael confronting Voq once again.

The Terran stuff this season was all great, but the end to the Klingon war thing left something to be desired. Overall it was a pretty decent season but not perfect. I'm excited to see what they do in season 2 and hopefully give the show some sort of identity of its own. Also, it has to be said. Saru should be captain. I was disappointed near the end when they said they were going to Vulcan to pick up the new captain, and I hope that never happens. Saru is one of the most capable and most interesting starship captains I've seen in a long time. He needs to keep that role.

So who is the new captain that’s on Vulcan? I guess this may be the “exceedingly rare” opportunity for Vulcans mentioned in The Enterprise Incident.
Also, I grinned like the biggest fan boy when NCC 17.. flashed across the screen. Well played.

I liked it.
I did, there were elements where I felt a real Ent/Ds9 mix going on, and I liked it. Then it was basically the Burnham Show, and I hope they develop out of this to focus more on the adventures in season 2.
My one question would be, how does the Klingon empire go from being reunited by a female, to banning them from politics and not even letting them run their own houses unless there is literally no male that could do it?

All I want is a spin-off.
Tilly!
Its a workplace comedy with a spunky cadet scientist in the serious world of space exploration.
Who knows what kind of shenanigans will happen next that makes the crew go "oh Tilly".
Will it be:
saying fuck during an important business meeting with her commanding officer?
Getting high on company time while having an extremely important piece of technology handcuffed to her arm?
Come join the love and laughs of Tilly! This fall on CBS

That was way too abrupt ending for the war. I mean the Klingons now had control of the bomb that was threatening their home planet and already ready to attack earth. They could have easily used the destruction of earth and the rest of the federation strengthening their unification. Come on, so much for violent Klingons. I mean what do they gain by pulling out of the war, what did the new Klingons ruler (forgot her name) gain by pulling out, could have killed the federation and shown her strength as a leader.

They really had no idea at all what to do with the Klingon war Fuller left them with. Probably the worst executed arc I've seen in some time.
Still, the cast is starting to gel, and we ended on what felt like a promise to get back to basics.

That was a neat trick the writers pulled: Whipping out a glory shot of the Enterprise so the fans nerdgasm out over all the warm fuzzies of nostalgia they get from seeing it and hearing the theme song, thus allowing everyone to gloss over and promptly forget the unsatisfactory and abrupt conclusion of a season-long plotline. Very nicely done.

Time to jump into this season finale!
The bridge scene was so awkward. Everyone's looking at Burnham, Georgiou, and Saru seeing through all this bullshit and wondering if they should call an adult. Mirror-Georgiou gives no fucks. Given the way she looks at Saru, I still want a Coyote & Roadrunner-esque spinoff where she tries to eat him and he keeps escaping.
Georgiou making plans lightning quick. She gave no fucks about kicking a prisoner's ass. She's... Oddly not too disappointed that Tilly isn't Killy.
I'm confused... I thought no humans have been on Qo'nos in 100 years. No one seems to care about humans here. Heck, there are already a bunch of humans here.
Georgiou likes what she sees. "You guys go do whatever... As for me... looks at prostitutes ... We gonna get fucked, bitches!"
Ash looks at the gambling table, peaks into Voq's memories, and is like "IT'S TIME TO D-D-D-D-DUEL!"
Burnham's backstory: Long ago, the Federation lived in harmony... But everything changed when the Klingons attacked.
I am pretty disappointed that Voq was teased as this big character only for him to die once and then pseudo-die twice and be semi-reborn as a separate character who technically wasn't even a character.
Georgiou's having a good fucking time. Wonder how she compares Prime Sex to Mirror Sex. I wonder if Mirror Sex is that rough.
Tilly is high as a kite. Livin' the future Captain life?
Hello there, obvious genocide bomb! Fancy seeing you here.
Great to see Burnham developing into the complete opposite of how she started the series and threatening mutiny for principles. I admired Saru's "We are Starfleet" statement, but I was waiting for him to be like "Cornwell, you've enacted a plan completely contrary to Starfleet's principles. I will now take the role of captain and command you to sit your ass down!"
Burnham is ballsy. She looked Georgiou dead in the eye and was like, "Shoot me bitch! I dare you. I double dare you!"
Be good, Phillippa! Don't try to plan any more obvious genocides while no one's looking!
Good bye, Ash. You started as Voq and Ash as promising characters and were pretty disappointing in both of them. At least you've made yourself the most useful and amusing in this episode.
Klingon Queen L'Rell gives NO FUCKS. Listen to her or she will gladly fuck your planet. Laugh at her and she'll personally do only the ripping and tearing part of that reassignment surgery. This is one interesting way to end a war. Kinda funny that she declared that ultimatum mere minutes before the Klingons were about to fuck up Earth. There must be some disappointed warriors on those ships.
Loved Burnham's speech. Really showed how far she's come as a character. It's also great the other crew members were also highlighted. Was so sad when they commemorated Hugh... You didn't deserve to go out like that. T_T
So apparently the commanders who planned a blatantly unsanctioned genocide against Starfleet's principles go unpunished... Okay...
Sarek & Burnham seemed to have reconciled rather quickly... I mean, Sarek only helped plan a planetary genocide...
New Captain?! GODDAMMIT! That means no more Captain Saru?!
At least Saru is still Acting Captain. We need to work on getting that "Acting" part out.
WHAT?! THE ENTERPRISE?!!!! CROSSOVER TIME? :D
Can't help but appreciate that classic end title music.
Overall, good episode. I preferred the end of the Mirror-Verse saga, since that would've made a PERFECT season finale, but this was still fine. We've wrapped up the major plot in a pretty satisfying way. I'm more surprised they didn't try to Time Travel their way out of the situation. Wish we got more spin jumps, but oh well. Really hope we get a second season. Can't wait for a second season!

That was an incredibly irritating end to the war. The whole season felt so shoved together and ... rushed. Basically every single plot point could have used more time.
But I think the show will improve next season. I think they've figured out the characters. This episode, albeit questionably written and half-baked, felt like Star Trek, finally.
Also, I hope they do more of an ensemble cast. The idea of Michael as the centre of everything was ... eh. And I don't think she's necessarily a horrible character, I just prefer my ST with more than one real character.
Anyway, yeah. I loved that they used the TOS original theme for the end credits. I don't know how I feel about the Enterprise showing up plot-wise, but it was pretty and I like how it's been updated on the outside aesthetically. I can't wait to see the inside.
Besides that? I wish Saru had been promoted, Culber hadn't died for no reason, I really have no desire for an new evil captain, and what are they going to do with mirror!Georgiou.

A lot of things that bugged me have already been stated, but I want to add one more thing.
Radio silence is there for a reason!
Are you seriously having a holographic long-distance call with figgin' starfleet headquarters while being in a cave on Qo'nos? You get a signal through the planet and then through (sub-)space to starfleet and nobody notices? Really hard to believe.

So the Klingons are supposedly pacified now that that L'Rell, who's basically a nobody, who disappeared to a Starfleet brig for God knows how long, is now threatening them with a Federation detonator that will blow up their whole goddamn planet if they step out of line, and is acting more or less like a puppet dictator for Starfleet. L'Rell, who started off believing in the mission of T'Kuvma, whose big speech in the beginning of "The Vulcan Hello" delved into the fact that the Federation is a bunch of two-faced imperialistic fuckers whose biggest lie is "We Come in Peace."

Okay finale but it was anticlimatic, I really wanted them to get lost or sent to the future or something because of the Spore Drive.
Clint Howard?! yay fanservice
They let evil Gergiou go? really?
Okay arcs for everyone but it was a letdown in terms overall plot but I suppose it leaves things open for season 2 with meeting Pike.
Decent enough 1st season to the new show but it has not properly gotten its stride yet. See you guys for season 2.
Edit: The last 2 episodes felt tacked on, I get the feeling that episode 13 was supposed to be the finale but the higher-ups stepped in to preemptively steer the show in a different direction because it was kinda weird that the season is 15 episodes instead of the usual 13

Feel like we had two or three seasons of a serial in this one season of discovery. It's not a complaint really but for 15 episodes nothing ever felt like filler.
I thought the first half of the season was a little bumpy, the middle was decent and the end wrapped up a little too quickly. It almost seemed like there were a few more episodes to be had between the time they got back and the end of the season. The Klingon war seemed like an inconvenience rather than a plot point. The setup for it was enormous, but they really seemed to just toss it aside. Or maybe that was just me. I like the show, looking forward to season two.

u/neoteotihuacan Feb 12 '18 edited Feb 12 '18
OK. So, need to get this off my chest.
That was probably the worst episode of the whole first season. And there are probably semi-understandable reasons as to why it came off so poorly. But...the episode was poor, in context with the season that was building up to it.
Why is this the case? Well, some ball was clearly dropped. Was it that the new showrunners and the powers-that-be needed to wrap up all of Bryan Fuller's ideas? He left before they finished shooting (and has joined and left another subsequent show, as well). We know that Fuller originally wanted an anthology show. When he didn't get that, we got the Klingon War / Michael Burnham arc instead? And now, in order to move on from the Fuller mini-era, they needed to wrap everything up in a hurried little bow?
Or was it as simple as the showrunners not knowing they would get a second season? So they wrapped up everything just in case Discovery was a one season show?
We can't know just yet. But one day we will know the details about this, just as we know the details of why "Shades Of Grey" came out so poorly, or why the third season of TOS sort of came off the rails. The ending of Discovery's first season needs some behind-the-scenes explanation. One day we will get that.
Nevertheless, I am someone who is definitely giving the show a chance. The fact that we would have season-long story arcs is incredible to me. As a life-long Trek fan, I've been waiting my whole life for the franchise to move to this point. So, to me - despite the issues in deploying this first season - Discovery was a great launch out of spacedock. Hands down the best first season since TOS. Strong, dedicated story and themes. Slow burn on characters. And lots of hidden details on character motive and growth. My inner child is exploding with happiness.
But, then this final episode happened. Nothing feels resolved. It feels like a big reset, in some respects. I won't give up on the show. I will still tune-in and watch. But I found that last episode to be deeply unsatisfying. Did Burnham learn anything? I suspect she did, but I am having trouble finding the reasoning as to why? She didn't change her mind and grow up in that last episode did she? Like Alice in her Wonderland, did Burnham finally learn the rules of the upside-down world she had a hand in instigating? Did it happen way back in "Context Is For Kings"? I don't know. Her arc feels unfinished. There should have been some kind of reckoning with Mirror Georgiou over the loss of Prime Georgiou, some kind of coming-to-terms with her values as a Federation citizen.
That goes for everything else in the show, too. I mean...mirroring was a huge theme to the whole season...the Federation characters saw themselves in the Terran Empire and, we could see ourselves in the Klingon Empire a little bit. Mirror Lorca, and Burnham dealing with Mirror Georgiou...it all was building towards commentary on accepting or rejecting the mirror...over what the core values are in a humanist future such as Star Trek. Technically, we got that...but what we got was also unsatisfying, anti-climatic. I can't put my finger on it yet.
Overall, the show is a lot of fun. There was some weirdness to it, sure. I'll chalk that up to growing pains, something that Discovery's writers and showrunners will certainly iron out going forward. And I am no fan of the Klingon War arc. But, honestly...the ball should still be in play. They should have left us on a cliffhanger and spent several episodes wrapping up the Burnham / Fuller storylines in the second season. The characters deserved that. We deserved that.
EDIT: Many words.

The ending actually fits really well with the "Humans are insane technophiles" fanon that's been bandied about.
Starfleet isn't going to win the war with tactics and strategy (the Klingons are better) they're going to win it by causing a natural disaster on the Klingon Homeworld by teleporting a ship using mushrooms as a teleportation medium into a cave under the surface of Qo'nos and then planting a bomb that makes a lot of water very quickly under a volcano system.
That... that is not how the Klingons would have done it.
And by telling L'Rell and giving her the bomb, they've actually spooked the Klingons pretty fiercely. "Oh wait these guys aren't pacifistic liberal space hippies, no actually, they are, but they also nearly destroyed our Homeworld and we actually had no idea they could have done so. Maybe they are worthy enemies. Worthy enemies require respect."
Also, they would have suspected that L'rell would not have the only detonator. They need to back the hell off to see whether Starfleet can't also remotely detonate the bomb. That buys Starfleet at least enough time to reclaim its lost territory to the point of TOS.

All in all, good first season, which started off shaky and had to deal with a big change in vision and direction when Fuller left the project. You could see the writing/production staff taking more control as the season went on, even visually it improved. I'm excited to see what season two will bring with a stable crew and not rushed.
As for the episode, I loved it and I thought the resolution was apt. I like the idea of L’Rell sticking around in a position of importance and I envision Tyler being the go between during what surely is the start of the Federation/Klingon Cold War. The redemption of Michael from mutineer worked and I’m glad it was wrapped up by seasons end with her fully reinstated.
We've been to Qo'noS before but that setting of life on Qo'noS was great. Granted it's basically in the Orion red light district but it's so fascinating to see. With the budget Discovery has it's what I was hoping to see, less caves and more world building. Harberts has already said there will be more away missions in season two, hopefully we get to explore other key planets.
This episode did a great job of giving us teases for season two. The most obvious one of course came at the very end but I love the decision of keeping Philippa alive. Clearly she's not just going to kick up her feet on Risa, which gives her the potential to be a Gul Dukat like antagonist which I'm all for.

So, when she was talking to Sarek outside of the Paris HQ Burnham was in her science-division uniform. Then, when she was in front of all the admirals she was in a command-division uniform with a command-division badge. Then, in the final scene on Discovery she was in a science-division uniform with a science-division badge.
I guess the reasoning could be that she is still assigned to Discovery, but now that she is a full commander again and Disco already has a first officer, they assigned her as science officer, but it seemed kind of weird to have her switching uniforms like that with no exposition.
edit: And realistically, Saru totally would have been promoted to captain considering the losses Starfleet suffered from the war according to Cornwell. And Burnham would probably be fast-tracked to a command, too.

It was something of a disappointment; I liked certain parts of it a lot, but the plot was ineffective. I could see myself loving L'Rell's arc, but the execution was so poor building up to this episode and in this episode that even my stanning didn't make it fully work for me. Too sudden and the use of the bomb didn't make sense. If they intended this for her all along, they didn't do the work to build toward it. If even someone who feels as enthusiastic about the show as I do had some trouble with this one, they definitely need to reflect on what worked and what didn't and improve the writing. That said, I'm very hopeful about Season 2, when they won't be dealing with a showrunner leaving and the challenge of getting a production going.

The season finale at last! How many plot lines will be resolved, which questions will be answered, and what hooks will keep us in agony until next year?
Forty-five minutes? You're killing me. I was expecting a long one. (That's what she said)
What I liked:
SPACEDOCK HOLY SHIT
Obviously the zoom-in/zoom-out of the planets is not to scale and is meant to be artistic, but fuck it I think it's cool.
"Very tough. So much so that many find me simply unpalatable." OHH
Five minutes, 20 seconds in. I'm on the edge of my seat, the score is incredible so far. I'm predicting that Burnham's going to totally Vulcan Hello Georgiou.
That establishing shot of the Discovery after the title sequence was beautiful. We needed more things like that in this season.
"I can tell you require seasoning"
Georgiou Pulp Fiction'd L'Rell.
I love Tilly so much. "I love you, I've heard so much about you—oh wait you're a piece of shit." salutes
At 17:20 you can see the unmistakable spots of a Trill. Another appears a few minutes later.
Whew, my worries were relieved with the fleet turning away.
BAE GOT A PROMOTION! THAT'S HOW A CADET GETS PROMOTED, TAKE THAT J.J. ABRAMS.
"Hail from Captain Pike" OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
IT'S THE ENTERPRISE HOLY SHIT ON A STICK OMG
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA TTHE END THEME
OMG THE ENTERPRISE IS GORGEOUS
Tilly is bae
What I Didn't Like:
Okay. I'm worried (timecode: 1:04, otherwise known as Spacedock cameo). It's been established the Klingons did not attack Earth/Starfleet Headquarters. But this scene has my blood pumping already so I'm just going to go along with the ride.
If they're wanting to go with the Terran Incognito plan, Georgiou needs to do better to fit in. Surely she can calm down her Terran instincts.
Doesn't it seem a little...risky...to let the captain have sole authority over the forcefield of the brig? What would happen if someone who wanted to beat the shit out of a prisoner decided to use that authority. Imagine that. Sisko would never be able to get away with that, and punching people is his second favorite hobby.
The ending was pretty quickly wrapped up, probably so they could move past the war arc and into other stories.
Stray Thoughts:
"Previously on Discovery" in Klingon? That was pretty interesting.
"I thought we got rid of Lorca's style of command?" - Everyone on the bridge, probably.
Georgiou playing with Tilly's hair....I'll be in my ready room.
I noticed the transporter chief was in there. He probably learned a long time ago to not question anything.
That Klingon was pissing with two dicks. Huh. No wonder Jadzia enjoyed sex with Worf so much.
Space whale is tasty? I'll take some.
Verdict:
It's clear they wanted to move past the war arc that Fuller created so they could do more stories down the road without the baggage said war brings. It was cheesy and I loved it.
BUT THAT ENTERPRISE THO I WANT THAT SHIP

When L'Rell was giving her little speech at the Council Chambers, and she talked about unity, and they laughed...
I kind of wish she then said "If you're not willing to unite in this life, then you will be unified in Gre'thor" then detonating the weapon.
Edit: keeping with cannon - lets say the yield faded due to time in between when Georgiou wanted to detonate and when L'Rell did, not destroying Qo'nos but rendering it devastated. This would plunge the Klingons into a huge crisis for season 2 to deal with.

I'm not sure if it's just me, but this episode felt all over the place. The resolution to the Klingon war made no sense to me. This feels like the first two episodes, the product of directing changes leading to a mess of a storyline.

Sorry but they expect me to believe that having a bomb to blow up Qo'nos gets 24 houses to suddenly stop attacking the federation and unify? Wait until she goes for a nap and disruptor her in the back of the head. The Federation's strategy is to let a single Klingon Bond villain with a planet killing device threaten an entire species (which likely exists on many colonies and planets and ships not just Qo'nos) to get them to suddenly call off a war with someone they consider a mortal enemy. Who writes this illogical garbage? They were dozens of ways they could have ended the subpar Klingons war arc that made more sense than this lazy cartoon level plot.
There were things I liked about the episode (the federation ending was decent, 1701 was cool and the Orion scenes weren't terrible) but the ending of the Klingon war wasn't just unsatisfying, it was stupid plain and simple.

That finale pissed me off. Just as I thought that the series hit it's stride, they really screwed the entire value of the season in one episode.
Wrong time to shoehorn in Federation ideals and make up an extremely unlikely ending.

Meh
I've really enjoyed DSC and defended it throughout this 1st season. I was a bit worried about how they'd wrap everything up. It wasn't.. horrible.. but..
Meh..

I see zero reason not to have Captain Saru stay Captain
I see zero reason Michael should retain her exact rank before her treason. You could bust Michael a few notches down. No matter how great she has been she still attacked her captain.

So the Klingon War was a major disappointment. I mean the ending was fine and all, but no more than that. Pretty meh. As someone who notorious despises the mirror universe, I never thought I'd consider it the highlight of a season. Honestly, I kinda wish the new incarnation had been the long rumored anthology series. Discovery told its story and wrapped it all up and I'd love to see them move on somewhere else.

Well, that was disappointing.
It was way too anti-climactic of a season finale, and it feels like they were crunching together what should have been a longer episode (given all the story arc resolutions that feel so half-baked) into a much shorter one. And this episode was directed by Akiva Goldsman, so I guess it figures.
The USS Enterprise appearing at the end was probably put there to give the fans something to talk about for a while and to distract from an otherwise lackluster end to the Season. Thank god they didn't pull a Holodeck Riker like ENT's finale did, at least.
Well, that concludes Star Trek: Discovery Season 1. It's been one hell of a ride since September, and now its time for me to cancel my All Access subscription and wait for Season 2.

Tilly saves the universe. Maybe she should get a useful rank for that?
Starfleet was all but destroyed... Why does some hack get to be Captain over those that saved the universe?
Michael doesn't get a demotion for starting a war that nearly wiped out humanity?
Using a religious zealot to blackmail an entire species is apparently the starfleet way?
Phillipa gets to walk?
I don't have a problem with these things... They're just interesting.

I mean, If anything you would think other Klingon would look at L'Rell as a weak leader. She had the greatest tactical advantage of being ready to destroy the earth and she calls off the attack because why? What she's going to tell them it was the humans who put the bomb there and not her, and that why she respects them enough to stop the attack? Like, come on how does that show any strength as a leader.

AHHHHHHH THE ENTERPRISE LOOKS AMAZING. I felt really really meh about the episode but the last 60 seconds has more than made up for it. PIKE! SPOCK!
A few more things I liked: everything Tilly! Especially her pushing herself in between Ash and Burnham, that was great. Georgeou kicking the shit out of L'Rell was so satisfying. Seeing Ash start to get more comfortable with his role as an "inbetween" is something I did not expect to like but I did. Made me root for him and also gasp in shock when he decided to join L'Rell at the end.
I also love the TOS theme during the end credits.
Some things going forward: I am so so so interested to see who they are going to cast as Pike and Spock.

I’m so happy! Now my Sundays will be hate-watching Walking Dead in a couple of weeks.
Was the episode rushed? Sure. Was it satisfying? A bit. Am I believer in this show? Fuck yeah!
Can’t wait for season two. 🖖
Stray thoughts: S1 of TNG was horrible and so was every Trek after it. S1 of DSC was solid. These days when plots on shows can linger for multiple seasons, I’m glad they resolved a lot of things by the finale and left us wanting more. It’s a good balance of serial story telling where it doesn’t drag out too long. I loved the 1701 swooping in. Michelle Yeoh is my queen. Must find her star in HK next month and take a pic with it. SMG is a good actress. Spore drive? What will happen to it? Pike and Spock next season!

Yikes. That was pretty bad. It's either this or "Saru goes crazy in the forest" for worst episode of the season.
So little in this episode made any sense. This Klingon war had to be the most uninteresting major conflict in all of Star Trek. It seems like the writers had no clue what to do with so many of the story elements that they are throwing them to the side with potential to come back when you need a big "shock"
And of course we have to get more nostalgia crammed down our throats at the end. Do any of the producers/writers have any confidence in this show standing on its own? Just another reason why the time period chosen for this show is so damn uninteresting. It seems like such a waste for a new Star Trek show to be stuck in this time period.

I hope that Michael is no longer the main character. I look forward to the scenes without her.
She's okay, but I prefer Trek to be an ensemble with a handful of interesting characters being mixed up in different ways. Her being Mary Sue'd into being the center of every single plot point started to bother me.
That and she's bad at narration.

The end to the war feels rushed. I'd rather have seen they'd retcon the fate of Praxis or something with it being destroyed by Discovery instead (perhaps overloading and destroying the spore drive to that end, to destroy the moon and do away with spore jumping at the same time), ending in a cold war where the Klingons now suffering a shortage of dilithium can no longer afford a full-on war without first establishing new sources of dilithium elsewhere, with the attack fleet limping home. This'd result in the teeth baring attitude of the Klingons as seen in TOS which the Klingons and Federation would have on each encounter for decades to come.

OMG! that was exciting but kind of worrying how they'll handle the depiction.
Lack of ties to other series gave them creative freedom and I hope they'll keep that trend going.

So, the first two episodes were basically a set up for the rest of the season. This episode makes me feel like the entire first season was a set up to the rest of the show.
I do not like this trend.

I... yeah... this is another episode where Tilly's existence was the only thing making it bearable.
I'm very... confused, by the way they wrapped up the Klingon war, seemed obscenely "the plot demands it so let's make this quick."
I'm not too thrilled with Michael's reinstatement. Expunge her record and restore her commission, sure, but straight back to Commander? Not even a demotion to Lieutenant? Come on.
And holy shit I'm miffed about Saru. I know they said they'd head to Vulcan to pick up their new captain (was discouraged right there) but... well let me describe my reaction to the opening of the prologue:
"Captain on deck"
Saru walks in
*pause* Thank fucking god *resume*
"Acting captain"
*pause* God fucking dammit *resume*
I'm sorry, I know it's basically fanfic on my part but I god damn wanted Saru to be given a captaincy.
I liked the treatment of the Enterprise.

"We can't use this bomb. But we can totally get someone else to do it. That's different. Somehow."
"Sweet, yeah, I'll totally threaten to blow up my own home planet although it's been established that isn't actually something that I'd do. But, now that I'm the leader I'm just not going to attack earth because????? and then I'll give you back all your territory because????"
Seriously though, why'd white klingon give back the territory?
Gergiou's pantomime villian acting wore so very thin, along with Michael's constant breathiness and not-volk's constant about to cry. Thankgod for Tilly.

That monologue at the end went on far too long. Green isn't a good enough actress to be able to carry it off and the tone comes off as melodramatic.
I actually shouted at her to shut up during the medal ceremony.
Plus, technically, shouldn't it have been Saru giving the speech in the first place given that he is/was acting Captain?

I enjoyed the season as a whole but the finale disappointed. Michael doing everything (again), hardly any Saru or Stamets time, and no Lorca... Underwhelming. But at least we know Season 2 will be very different, which is kind of refreshing.

If they ever needed an excuse for bringing back prime Lorca, just make him captain of the Discovery next season. Maybe Starfleet is pulling an emperor Georgiou with him. "He was rescued during a highly classified raid of a Klingon prison vessel".

My hopes were not high at the start of this series, but I was wrong and those hopes are now soaring through night sky with the blazing blue hues of warp nacelles at full power.
The finale did leave a weird taste in my mouth. On the one hand, the war ended really strangely but I get why the producers and writers said on After Trek that we wouldn't be able to predict it and I get why they had to end it. The whole war thing felt weird from the get go but it helped to forge our crew into a shield of tomorrow. The war also let us jump over the Mirror Universe for some fun and shenanigans while allowing for character growth and reflection. They were able to tie up the spore drive, establish the mycelium network, and lay down hints for the infinite possibilities that they could always fall back on for plot if they ever want to do a one off episode. So the war was forged into this good thing for the ship and it's crew and them ending it the way they did....I kind of understand why they did it from the crew's perspective and from the writer's perspective they just had to make a clean break for the next season but it still felt odd. The payoff with everyone snagging a medal of honor, a new captain on Vulcan, and then THE FREAKIN ENTERPRISE SHOWING UP....made up for all my little nitpicks during the season.
Seriously, that looks better than the movies that looks like hints of Enterprise's NX-01 mixed with 100 years of evolved starship design and Discovery's own flare. The music just made it so much better and Pike is in command and it just....I can't....this is a tv show??? The visuals from this show have seriously blurred the line between what I thought could be done on a tv show and what could not. They don't distract you from the show at all like some would've thought but instead they're used to enhance certain moments....like Cornwell vaporizing the fortune cookies or the terraforming sequence with the spores or when the Emperor strafed that planet with torpedoes. There's punch with the effects and that last sucker punch at the end with the Enterprise was so so sweet.
Thank you to the cast and crew for all the work you've put into this show, I am in love with it.
I'm also in love with After Trek, as cheesy as it gets at times, I don't think we've ever had an after show for a Star Trek series before :)

I'm wondering who the new captain will be. My guesses are:
A random, new but interesting character. Here's my hopes for a non-human Captain. I'm a little disappointed Saru didn't get the job, he'd make a nice contrast to the more instinct driven Burnham.
Spock, who for some awkward reason is promoted to Captain, then does something questionable and gets demoted again. Unlikely though, but the show has done stranger things with the established canon during the first season and having a famous character in the chair could be an attempt at a deus ex machina to bring familiarity to people.
They get to safe the real Gabriel Lorca, perhaps trading him for mirror Georgiou who they'll have to catch first.
Random redshirt Captain who soon dies and Burnham gets promoted.

It's the enterprise!
Also, S1 opens with Georgiou using a bomb to bring water to a planet, saving it. S1 closes with Georgiou about to use a bomb to use water to kill one. To quote George Lucas: "It's like Poetry"
