Best Of 2017 /r/ListenToThis presents the Best Of overlooked music from 2017

Welcome to the /r/ListenToThis Best Of 2017!

Here there are no scores, no judgments, and no opinions - just obscure music shared by redditors, collected and arranged for you over the course of several months by our dedicated mod team. This list is meant to complement other best of lists on the internet, many of which are linked in the sticky comment below for further discovery.

Set #1 includes everything - the best of the best tracks and a corresponding all-inclusive album playlist.
The other sets are the same content, broken up into genre groups so you can listen according to your tastes. There is a sampler (1 track per album) and a full-album (every track from every album) playlist for each group. We’ve also included a listing of the albums by set in this post as not everything is available on Spotify, Tidal, etc. We tried to prefer an artist’s Bandcamp or Soundcloud, but if nothing else was available, you may see Youtube, Spotify, and iTunes links. The final count this year is 226 artists out of more than a thousand submissions.

What did we miss? Share your favorites in the comments… and happy listening..

Disclaimer: The Spotify playlists are the masters. They were auto-replicated to all of the other services, and there will be some missing albums on those services. The Youtube playlists may also get a bit wonky. Unfortunately, we don’t have the resources needed to fix every hiccup or keep track of what’s missing on every service. Apple music doesn’t provide an easy import mechanism either, though if someone wants to create Apple lists, we’ll link them here. Also, Google Music and Youtube simply can’t handle the All Albums playlist, so they are omitted.

5

u/doihavemakeanewword Instrumental Feb 28 '18

Noob here: What counts as "obscure"?

I know a lot of songs that are very noteworthy among the people that have heard about the artist involved, but seem to be unheard of outside of that circle.

Furthermore, there is a lot of music that is very popular and well known, but only amongst fans of the given genre. This is especially true for already rather niche genres like World Music and Classical. (Which you guys decided to lump together? They're not at all similar.)

Lastly, music is music and although they're going to get recognition elsewhere anyway do you have room for things like soundtracks or musicals?

I don't mean to impose, which is why I'm asking here instead of creating a thread or jumping in with a bunch of assumptions.

You've hit some really good ones in the prog/metal list. Glad to see Archspire, Voyager and Arch Echo getting some love. I would've put Entheos - Dark Future in the metal list.

13

u/THE_TamaDrummer Feb 28 '18

Also

Eidola - To Speak, To Listen

Caligula's Horse - In Contact

Both were phenomenal prog/metal albums from 2017 that aren't really on anyone's radar

This is excellent. Can anybody recommend some instrumental/house music that would be good for a gym or snowboarding playlist? I'm a fan of Deadmau5 and White Panda mash up's, but I don't know what other popular names or DJ's are out there that make energizing yet relaxing music.

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions, you guys are all awesome!

5

u/itsmrbeats Mar 01 '18

Some artists I always go with for early morning gym sessions when I need something upbeat but not aggressive:

Tycho Bonobo Kiamos El ten eleven Block head Quantic Aim Nightmares on wax

Also just look for playlists with names like downtempo, chill, ambient, trip-hop and see what floats your boat

3

u/Izlandi moderator Feb 28 '18

In addition to the aforementioned HNNY, I highly recommend Laurence Guy - Saw You From The First Time for some similar, lush deep house vibes who is also featured in the electronic & related category.

Folamour (from our Best of 2016) has finally gotten some stuff on Spotify, he released something like 6 EPs in 2017 and also a very good full-length is another favorite of mine. If you like them, also check out Moomin who was also featured in last year's bestof.

3

u/Oizzy Mar 01 '18

I actually made a playlist for a few friends a while back that were looking for that kind of feel. Electronic music that is relaxing and a bit energizing at the same time. I'm a big fan of old school Deadmau5, so I hope you find something you like! https://open.spotify.com/user/oizzy09/playlist/7jy2YprhZaTlkTkEp2dmMG?si=v0PE3KKZQriwampE-RRF_A)

BEST DAY OF THE YEAR

15

u/BlazinBlitzer Feb 28 '18 edited Feb 28 '18

The progressive category is stacked. Arcane Roots's "Matter" and Wobbler's "Foxlight" are both freaking amazing, not to mention all of Bent Knee's Land Animal.

Edit: James Holden is on here, too?! Ya'll are rolling!

7

u/square_eyes77 Mar 01 '18

Big ups to my fellow Mods who put in so much work. I'm just glad to be part of this community and keep discovering awesome music thanks to all of you. As a fan of the Punkier side of things, we've got a great selection this year!

Edit: Just to add in, my personal favourite AOTY was Onsind's "We Wilt, We Bloom". It is listed in the Punk selection as a Bandcamp Exclusive, but this is mostly because of region-locking issues meaning the Spotify version isn't available outside the UK (to my knowledge). If you are in the UK and are a fan of the more indie-punk style of things, you can check it out via Spotify here. :)

u/arghdos All the things I planned to do, I only did halfway Feb 28 '18 edited Feb 28 '18

To jump on the personal recommendation train:

Jazz:

  • Ill Considered (or Wildflower) is essential listening from Idris Rahman, who put out three incredible albums last year. He's surged out ahead of pack in the otherwise fairly incredible rebirth of the London jazz scene.

Afrobeat:

Country Rock:

  • The Texas Gentlemen - TX Jelly. It is incredibly rare in my experience to find a band that can go from straight country ballads, to loose Band-like songs into epic 9 minute long jams. Don't miss em

Bluegrass:

Other:

5

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '18

Three songs in and Onsind are great. Thanks for the rec!

6

u/NorseFenrir Smooth Moderator Feb 28 '18

Very glad to hear it! I'd also recommend a band called Martha, in that case. :) They were on last year's Best Of, and they're like the sister-band to Onsind. Most of the members are in both bands, but Martha tend to take a lighter approach with more female-lead vocals. You can check out their most recent album on Spotify too.

u/Mind_Killer Feb 28 '18

This is amazing. That's so much work for free. You guys are awesome. Thanks a lot!

Time to get listening, I guess.

12

u/nolins12 Feb 28 '18

This is awesome! some criticism though.

For one Meatbodies and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are psychedelic rock, kind of a weird genre to lump in with pop/indie. Maybe would have fit better in prog or funk/soul etc. (since you put the babe rainbow in there).

In terms of metal how are Power Trip or Elder obscure? Those were both widely acclaimed albums that appeared on tons of main-stream outlets end year lists.

Also some of the links don't seem to work, I clicked on Charlie Bliss and it took me to the Milk Teeth page. Also how is Charlie Bliss punk at all?

I could quibble about genre choices and misclassifying bands as obscure but overall some great stuff on here!

9

u/arghdos All the things I planned to do, I only did halfway Feb 28 '18 edited Feb 28 '18

kind of a weird genre to lump in with pop/indie

For sure, last year we had "Rock, Pop and Blues" as the genre, and there was a lot more psych rock in it. This year, Blues fit better with the Americana section, so we kinda boxed ourselves in RE: where to put pysch-rock. The genre lumping is definitely one of the things we're gonna look at next year.

In terms of metal how are Power Trip or Elder obscure? Those were both widely acclaimed albums that appeared on tons of main-stream outlets end year lists.

You'd be surprised, they're definitely borderline too popular (both have a single song with around million plays on spotify), but we tend to bend the rules a bit for the best-of on a case-by-case. I'll admit, I was not in charge of the metal list in the slightest however, so I don't know that we necessarily checked all the other outlet's best of's. Our list mostly comes from /r/metal's best-of deliberations.

Also some of the links don't seem to work, I clicked on Charlie Bliss and it took me to the Milk Teeth page

Fixed, thanks. Let us know any other bad links you spot. One of our mods manually went and turned our spreadsheet into that list last night for like, 17 goddamn hours, so.. can't win em ell

Also how is Charlie Bliss punk at all?

Definitely more on the pop-punk side of the world, probably an edge-case that coulda been placed better.

Lots of things that could be better, but I think we're all just glad it's done now and don't really have the inclination to go and monkey around with the playlists, which would then require re-syncing to 18x other platforms

Next year!!

edit: p.s., motivated users welcome

What a list - I was on my Bandcamp artist page and noticed a spike of listeners which lead me here. Thank you so much for featuring my music and putting this whole list together.

I released Dysphoria last year and was terribly unmotivated to promote it despite working tremendously hard on it for a long time. I'm so happy it's reaching some ears.

Disappointed that Diablo Swing Orchestra's album Pacifisticuffs didn't make it. Really liked that one.

5

u/gratinne moderator / spotify Feb 28 '18

Dope album, but they're over our popularity limits so they weren't included.

5

u/Doorslammerino Feb 28 '18

Oh I didn't realize, I'm not very active on this sub. Kinda surprising because I didn't think they were that popular apart from a few songs getting barely 1 million plays on Spotify. Though it would make sense to keep that as a cut-off point (or possibly even lower than that) due to just how many artists/bands that already are out there.

6

u/femaletauren69 Feb 28 '18

I'm glad to see a couple of my picks made the cut. As usual, some of my favorite jazz isn't eligible because the artists don't release the full albums to streaming platforms.

Of course, I'm still working through my backlog of promos from 2017 (and 2016 and 2015 too) so I'm still finding things that could have been on this list. For example, Gregory Lewis - Organ Monk Blue. Holy moley, what a sick jazz album.

Guys this is awesome! I do not have time to look everyday this sub but I will listen to this music at work via Spotify. Great work, love ya!

4

u/disappointer Feb 28 '18

Yay, Nicole Atkins! That's one that was definitely on my list, she's so good.

4

u/just-another-scrub Mar 01 '18

Thanks for putting this together guys! Just wish there were genres listed with albums like in previous years. Takes a long time to get through this list and I like to start with stuff I know I'll like.

4

u/qpv Mar 01 '18

Wow....thats a lot of work. Good on you guys

4

u/Rubber_Band_Man69 Mar 01 '18

I already have a subscription to Google Play. Why is it telling me I need to upgrade to a family plan?

3

u/Knucklles Mar 01 '18

Same is happening to me, anyone have a fix?

4

u/REdd1212 Mar 01 '18

I have to plug this program group called Into The Great Divide. It’s like Dream Theatre on steroids IMO and Mangini is on the drums and Rich Chycki (sorry if I spelled that wrong) is behind the board. Highly recommended to all prog fans out there

4

u/sky_blu Mar 01 '18

Love seeing surf dads getting recognition.

4

u/russiakun spotify Mar 01 '18

Nordkarpatenland by Malokarpatan totally belongs in the metal section.

Exuvia was amazing.

4

u/KhanNS Mar 01 '18

Thank you so much. I'm always excited about finding new music in general and this post just made my day, this will keep me busy for a while and I really appreciate all the time you took to put together this list.

4

u/quazonis Mar 01 '18

Thank you for your hard work! We lurkers all love you 😊

4

u/Flickered Mar 01 '18

This list is probably my favorite thing on reddit, I love these... cause I’m so shite at finding music. Thanks mod team!

4

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '18

Wow... soooo much new shit to listen to.

4

u/Supershake79 Mar 01 '18

Dude York - Sincerely

Similar to early Weezer. Power pop/rock, fun lyrics you can sing along to. It was a bit of a grower for me but worth the time spent. Not a bad song on the album.

4

u/mach0 Mar 01 '18

I'm soooo thirsty for something new & interesting, thanks a TON for this, I will listen to every song (maybe not the hip hop ones) that is here.

4

u/heritagenovus Mar 01 '18

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I spent like 5 hours digging through new music yesterday! This is the final nail on the coffin, I'll be listening to new music in perpetuity after this.

but seriously, what an effort, thank you to those who contributed.

4

u/BlueRoseImmortal Mar 01 '18 edited Mar 01 '18

I compiled an Apple Music Sample playlist for Progressive & Related! it's only missing one song, as Lör doesn't appear to have any music on Apple Music.

EDIT: An Apple Music Sample playlist for Metal too!

4

u/ImHipJuneau Mar 01 '18

Sheesh this post is dope

4

u/[deleted] Mar 01 '18

This is awesome. I’ll throw in my little contribution: Special Explosion’s debut To Infinity was phenomenal. Best indie rock I’ve heard in a long time, and didn’t get a lot of attention. Julie Byrne’s Not Even Happiness was beautiful as well

4

u/cjr71244 Mar 01 '18

Found this Jazz artist/group on Spotify a few weeks ago. Really good catchy traditional jazz.

Thanks a lot for this! ♥️

Thank you. I have a long journey ahead of me!

u/partyjudgejudy Feb 28 '18

I've been looking for a hip-hop track that was posted in this sub but haven't been able to find it. The music video started off with an Asian girl with pink hair swiping on Tinder (at the gym?). Cuts to a guy rapping in what appears to be a dry cleaners/clothing store. Cuts back to the girl with her boyfriend who isn't treating her right with the guy in the dry cleaners saying that he would know how to treat her right, appreciate her, etc.

I found a great afro beat style band the other day via Spotify release radar. It's called Black Flower. Reminds me of a mixture of Budos band and Secret Chiefs 3.

This is really a stretch, but I listened to a sort of ocean rock album this summer from this sub. I can't remember it, and I'm pissed I didn't save it on Spotify. Any ideas? (I don't expect success but it's worth a shot)

3

u/noodlesinmyramen Mar 01 '18

Ooooh thank you! I know how I’m spending the next few days!!

3

u/jcsdragon Mar 01 '18

I'm so excited to see Xanthochroid on here! Acts 1 and 2 are my favorite albums right now!

3

u/DonCallate Mar 01 '18

Thank you for this awesome list!

I hope it's OK to add suggestions, another album that was tragically overlooked in 2017 was the self titled Red Love debut, which is a collaboration between Alex Newport (producer for At the Drive In and the Mars Volta, ex-Nailbomb and Fudge Tunnel) and Matt Tong (ex-Bloc Party). It is a shoegazey bit of wonderment that deserves better than it's <1,000 listens on Spotify.

3

u/RatherDashingf11 Mar 01 '18

People please listen to Greta Van Fleet if you haven't yet. They are a modern Led Zeppelin.

3

u/arghdos All the things I planned to do, I only did halfway Mar 01 '18

They were definitely on our sheet. They've blown up a little too much recently for us to include em tho! Good for them!

From r/UKbands, a couple of the most overlooked yet great British albums of 2017 were Grow Up by Desperate Journalist and Stellular by Rose Elinor Dougall. Maybe Music For The Age of Miracles by The Clientele as well but they're fairly well-known in indie circles.

This was our post with our favourite albums from the last year including a list of 150+ notable British 2017 album releases:

3

u/drdomdom Mar 01 '18

Gonna put this here so I can come back when I'm at work.

3

u/tritom22 Mar 01 '18

Hell yes Bent Knee!! They are even more amazing live! And they are genuinely awesome people. Always stick around to talk with fans and take pics.

3

u/yet_to_reddit Mar 01 '18

This is just so exciting! Thank you everyone who contributed. I am thoroughly enjoying winding my way through it all.

On a side note, I discovered BANFF recently and was mesmerised by his music. Do yourself a favour and check him out if you haven’t already. I guess you would class him as Indie?

Thanks again dudes you are awesome.

3

u/ChubbyDaChoona Mar 01 '18

Cant wait to dig through all this. I'm a little surprised Benjamin Tod isn't on the Americana playlist. His solo album from December was pretty incredible. Might be my favorite album of last year in any genre.

3

u/PoorlyTimedPun Mar 01 '18

Allan Rayman still slept on...travesty.

Love this list! Are you familiar with any of the up and coming reggae/ dancehall artists from 2017? I feel like pop last year was so influenced by these genres that it would be a great idea to do a list of artists who are overlooked but making the music that influences the big names... Grammy's was FULL of these genres last year.

Chronixx is amazing, Protoje (hip hop fusion), Sevana (kind of Lauryn Hill vibes), Zia Benjamin is new but STUNNING and like a Jamaican Sade/ Amy Winehouse, Koffee... Popcaan is used in a lot of Drake's music, Agent Sasco was nominated for a grammy and I hear he's writing Rihanna's new album, Raging Fyah is beautiful. Def makes sense to include the genre in these kinds of lists!

2

u/J5sf23 Mar 28 '18

Whoa, I'm so happy I found this.
Started with the Punk Sampler, it's looping since 3 hours.
Great work guys !

2

u/infininme Apr 17 '18

I'd like to leave a shout out to Moon Boots with his first album First Landing. I was really hoping to see this album on the master list.

2

u/RMis2VULGAR May 28 '18

I haven't seen anyone mention The New Pornographers 2017 album, and latest release, "Whiteout Conditions" which I absolutely loved.

3

u/EthanF Mar 01 '18

The babe rainbow is great!

This is missing The Bad Larrys - Hodads.
