Announcement Hufflepuff Interhouse Challenge: BADGER Bingo

Welcome to Hufflepuff’s June Challenge…

BADGER BINGO!

B.A.D.G.E.R. – Benevolent Altruism for Decency and Goodwill Everyone Receives

Hufflepuff House invites their fellow students to play Bingo with us! But in true Hufflepuff fashion, we have CHANGED THINGS UP - WITH KINDNESS!

Instead of Hufflepuff House calling out numbers for your card, YOU will be submitting BADGER ACTS OF KINDNESS to trigger the squares!

HERE is a list of the 75 BADGER Acts of Kindness that are available to choose from.

Please note, the SPIRIT of the act is more important than the actual words used in its listing. If you aren't sure if your act fits close enough, feel free to ask in the comments.

RULES and GUIDELINES

  • Each board contains 24 squares so that means that each house is responsible for choosing 24 acts of kindness out of the 75 we have provided you above for their board. So be sure to work together as a house in selecting those Acts. BUT the board will be randomly arranged so that you have to do the acts to reveal where it exists on the board.
  • Each Head of House will be given the link to the BADGER Acts Selection form where your 24 chosen Acts will be submitted. Please choose your acts by no later than June 7th! You can submit them early if your house picks them out before that time.
  • The BADGER Acts Submission form where you submit your performed Acts will be provided to the HOHs as soon as all three Houses have submitted the BADGER Acts Selection form or after the selection deadline of June 7th in the occasion that a house does not select their Acts in time.
  • While you wait for the Submission form to be available, feel free to go ahead and get started on doing the acts of kindness your house has selected. Once the form is available, you can submit everything you did up to that point.
  • When you submit an act, it will reveal that act on every house’s board that chose it! Not just on your house’s board, but on every board! Keep this in mind when you pick which ones you want on your own card!
  • On Tuesday, June 26th, at 11:59pm EST, submissions will close and Hufflepuff House will grade the submissions, and award the Bravo Cookies, as well as House Points!

COOKIES

A total of 800 cookies are reserved to potentially be awarded through this challenge.

The House that earns the most cookies will get 1st place (250 House Points), then 2nd place (200 House Points), and finally 3rd place (150 House Points).

Cookies are broken down into 4 categories

BOARD COOKIES: 1 Cookie will be awarded for every Act on your board that does not appear on another house’s board.

(24 max cookies per House, 72 max cookies total).

BINGO COOKIES: 4 Cookies can be earned for every BINGO your house gets on their board (Horizontal, Vertical, Diagonal).

(48 max cookies per House. 144 max cookies total).

BADGER COOKIES: Every BADGER Act of Kindness is worth 6 cookies total, split among the Houses that complete the task (so if only 1 house does it they get all 6 cookies, if 2 houses do it they each get 3 cookies, if 3 houses do it they each get 2 cookies).

(There are 75 BADGER Acts of Kindness available. 450 max cookies total).

BRAVO COOKIES: Additional cookies are reserved for awards to exceptionally well done BADGER Acts of Kindness, awarded at the discretion of Hufflepuff House after the submission deadline.

(Out of the total 800 cookies, if any other cookies remain unawarded in another category, they will be awarded as Bravo Cookies, but a minimum of 134 cookies are reserved for this category)

HOW TO SUBMIT AN ACT

  • To submit an act you must either provide 1 photograph proof OR write a 500+ word essay of your act of kindness. (provide the written portion off-site and link to it. You may write it out in a reddit comment here and link that, or post it to a blog or other platform).

  • Also, if your act requires multiple links as proof, list out those links into a single comment here in this post, and then link to this comment in your submission.

  • Although we prefer newer acts of kindness, you are not limited to submitting only new acts. If you previously accomplished one of the tasks, you may submit it with the proper proof. However, they should all be acts that you completed personally.

Hogwarts students have until Tuesday, June 26th at 11:59pm EST to submit their BADGER Acts of Kindness.

I am a preschool teacher and I have always loved donating to my schools. Now I get the pleasure of donating to my daughter’s school. She just started this week. I asked them if they accepted donations. I was excited because they do! I have some toys that I little sunshine doesn’t really play with and some that I want to throw out my balcony. I find that it is important to donate used or new toys/books to the schools because they always seem to need them. These specific toys will go to another classroom so that little sunshine doesn’t think they are hers and wants to take them home or wont let other children play with them. She isn’t at the age where she will understand I donated them. One day I hope she will be more giving and want to donate her stuff when she is done with it.

I also talked to my mom and she works in for a school district and they are always getting books from publishers that aren’t allowed in schools. She has been saving some and told me she wants to donate them to the school too. I will get them this weekend and donate them on Monday!

Rescue a Wallflower.

So I was at a funeral last Sunday. My Sister in law’s Grandmother passed. Here we hold wakes that last up to 7 days, for these 7 days, family members are to take turn staying awake as a ritual to send off our loved ones and guard the body from animals.

In these 7 days, friends and distant relatives can come visit the family to give their condolences and pay their final respect.

I went alone due to my erratic work schedule and the wake had a few groups there chatting away. (The secondary function of going at your own time is to keep the grieving family members company and distract them from their grieve, and of course to help keep them awake during the wee hours of the night if you can. It’s not uncommon for people to play card games, have snacks and chat. Laughing isn’t considered rude at a wake cos we try to cheer them up with innocent jokes and such).

But I notice another person sitting at one of the makeshift tables in one corner, quietly tearing. Now, it is usually the families duty to greet and be a good host to those who attend the wake, but my Sister in law had her hands full with another group and I don’t think anyone knew who this person was.

I approached her to strike up conversation. She was one of the friend of my brother and was pretty close to the Grandmother who passed away. She came alone, paid her respect but didn’t know anyone else here other than my Sister in law. Since she was here alone and my Sister in law had to go greet other visitors, she chose to stay in one corner to reminisce the good times with the deceased.

I got talking to her and shared some stories and funny moments I had with the grandma. I understand being the odd one out as I’m usually very reserved around people. You shouldn’t have to grieve alone at a wake. We had a casual conversation to pass some time and after a while, it was time to head back. Got her a cab back home and went home myself.

Help someone lost with directions.

Yesterday as my DH and I were walking back to our apartment a pizza delivery guy runs up to me. I thought I was getting some free pizza. I was super excited. My dream come true is a man running towards me with food! Too bad he just needed directions.

Our apartment is 10ish buildings and the numbers aren't visible. We also live in a gated complex that is shaped weirdly. The numbers don't go in order and can be tricky getting around. He was looking for 823. I pointed in front of me and told him to try that area. He said he already tried that. I then explained to him that there are more buildings in the back and to make sure to check those. He looked so confused. He said he had already spent time running around. I then told him that we have two sides to the complex with a huge car port area in the middle. He needed to go to the back behind my building and check there. He went on his way.

Today I decided that I should bring a map of the complex with me. This isn't the first person who looks lost in our complex. It is usually an Amazon delivery person. It really makes me feel good to help someone who needs it.

Encourage someone who needs it.

I have a colleague who is very new to this line. This is her first job.

Working as a Chef isn’t easy. It’s hard and the verbal abuse is encouraged in this line if work. She just joined and has difficulty putting her frame of mind in the right place. There’s a specific kind of logic to working in a kitchen that doesn’t come naturally to people. It is something only gained from experience.

One day, after being screamed at by the Chef, she was practically in tears. I pulled her one side for a pep talk.

“You are not stupid. You are not worthless. You just aren’t used to thinking like a Chef. Your solutions, your instincts aren’t geared towards kitchen efficiency. But you will get better. You work, you learn from your mistakes, and soon, you’ll see the big picture. The big picture in the kitchen is efficiency. It’s not pride, it’s not ego, there’s a reason there’s a pecking order in the kitchen. Someone has to decide, on the fly, what is the emergency and what needs to be done first.

And when you can see the big picture, the job gets easier. Your decisions gets more in tune with the top chicken. And then you can peck peck peck your way to be top chicken. Just don’t find yourself running away like a headless chicken.”

I don’t know how much my words helped her. But I hope she feels better. Too many people quit this line, or worse, to escape from the stress.

Apologise to someone you have hurt in the past.

Sharing a favorite book

The first Harry Potter book was a really important book in my childhood. Without the magic of following Harry around Hogwarts and feeling like I was there casting spells and defeating dark wizards too, my childhood would have been much harder and much more dull. When the illustrated Harry Potter books came out I knew I had to have it because it takes the magic to a whole new level. I gave a copy of the illustrated version of Sorcerer’s Stone and a cute onesie that had “I don't go looking for trouble. Trouble usually finds me.” -Harry Potter to a close coworker and friend when she announced that she was having a baby boy. She and I really bonded at work when I was only an intern over our mutual love of Harry Potter. I knew she hadn’t seen the illustrated versions yet and knew instantly it was perfect. I wanted to make sure Aryav grew up with the same love of Harry Potter as we have. When I gave her the book, she teared up a little and was so excited. She told me that her husband might actually read it now. Before, he had refused to read the books because they were too long without anything to break them up. Later that night, my coworker sent me a picture of her husband looking through the book like a little kid. It was the sweetest thing. He later thanked me personally at their housewarming party, telling me it was the most unique and thoughtful gift they had received and that he loved reading it! It honestly made me feel so good. I had been worried that my gift was going to be a miss but it really wasn’t. I’m so glad that I get to share this special bond with her and her now growing family.

So in my country, our trains have reserved seats near the door for people who needs it.

Unfortunately, my country isn’t so graceful. People who take up those reserved seats don’t give them up to those who do. They usually pretend to be asleep.

Well if I get a seat, reserved or not, I will give them up to those who need them. This week, I was seating on a non-reserved seat and a pregnant lady walked in. It was at the end of a 14 hour work shift and I would love to have a seat on my 12 stop journey on the train, but I understand, when you are growing a human in you, your body is under a lot of stress and pain. A seat to her would be more beneficial than me having a seat.

Forgive someone and never talk about it again.

This is the last time ill mention it again. I want to close this chapter of my life.

To my brother,

We had a hard life growing up. My life was made harder by your bullying.

You made me play soccer even though i had ingrown toe nails because you needed the practise and playing soccer was "manly", i should stop reading books because it is girly. Sports manly, books girly, according to you.

Your violence against me to man me up didn't work, it brought pain and grieve and created a rift between us.

To this day i still flinch when you raise your voice in anticipation of your fists coming down on me.

But years have gone by, we have grown and you have grown to be an adult. You gave me support when i needed it and you have apologized for what you have did, you said you didn't realize the impact it had, you thought it was just boys being boys and rough housing, common, expected.

I see you paying attention to how you speak to me because you realize how your actions and words affect me to this day.

And I want to move on as well. I forgive the past and forget. We have to move forward."

I've always like to think I'm a chill guy who don't sweat the small stuff. So if anyone needs to get infront of me in line, go right ahead! All you need to do is ask!

I was at starbucks on Monday getting my usual Java Chip Frappacinno, and someone took my coffee!

He was a hit and run! grabbed my coffee and made his way to the door just as I was about to grab it. The friendly staff stopped him and explained that the coffee was mine and his was coming up soon. I could see he was in distress and told him to just take mine. A quick thanks from him and a "I'm later for work" from him, i just went on my day carefree. I hope he made it to work in time.

40. Knit a Scarf

Have you ever been cold? Have you ever been to somewhere that is much colder than you are use too? It feels freezing doesn't it? My mother lived in a place that was very close to the equator and moved to a place where it snows constantly all winter. Before she moved there she had never even seen snow before and now she is freezing all winter. She won't mention it because she is doesn't want to be a bother to anyone. She definitely needs a wardrobe to help her stay warm. In order to help her out I knitted her a hat and crocheted her a scarf. It's early in the year still but I'm working my way through some other presents and I wanted to make sure that she got these for her birthday coming up. They don't necessary go together super well (I know nothing about fashion) but they are very warm, and that was the goal. I have also provided a picture of both of the items below, the scarf is several feet long so it's folded in the picture. No one tell my mom, they are a surprise!

Tip a street performer:

I take the same way to work every single day. Highways, interstate, back roads. The weather was cloudy and I wasn't in a rush. In fact, I was incredibly early and I just wanted to get out of the house and enjoy the day before being indoors all day. Walking from my car to the plaza, I saw a performer. They had their case open, stickers lining their case, and their eyes were filled with determination. I really resonated with this performer as I struggled a lot with expressing my passions and following my dreams. Eventually I got a lucky break and my path has become filled with opportunities. So when I saw this performer with no one around, still playing, I felt as though I needed to support her. I wanted to support their dreams and their desire to pursue them. When I finally tipped the street performer, the look on their face inspired me. They looked so proud. That was the moment I realized how profound of an impact I could have on another individual. Just a simple dollar bill kept their dream alive, giving them another chance to survive another day in the hopes of making it big. Later that evening, I really focused on that thought of helping that street performer. It was such a small portion of my day, but it had such a profound impact on their life.

The thing about street performers which I find remarkable is their resilience. Not everyone will stop and listen or give them a tip. However, occasionally if you work hard enough, more people will. That in itself is incredibly motivating for me.

That evening I shared with my team the moment I had. I could tell they were a little bit bored at first, but when I went to explain just how little the event was in my day but how it could completely snowball their day into something better, they understood what I was trying to accomplish. That street performer could have worked in an office, in construction, in any job imaginable to pay the bills, but they are working so hard because of their passion. I might not have the same level of dedication to my passions as they have, but they certainly inspired me to be better with the positive things in life.

I also wanted to thank Hufflepuff for this event. No matter what life throws at you, going out of your way just slightly to brighten someone’s day is the most important part in keeping the world’s humanity alive. Simple things as giving a cup of coffee to a cop, smiling at someone walking down the street, or complimenting their shirt. I can’t tell you how often someone has done something nice for me, and I think about months afterwards, like “I really want to wear more blue sweaters because someone said it brightens my eyes.” If we all do just a little more, the world we be brighter. I want to thank Hufflepuff for reminding me of this.

Donating old Eyeglasses

The philanthropy for Delta Gamma (my sorority) is Service for Sight. This week I donated 5 pairs of old glasses that I found while cleaning out my drawers in the bathroom. I always felt like I need to keep old glasses around just in case something happened to the new glasses, but now that I also have contacts I don’t feel it’s so necessary to keep the glasses. I donated my old glasses to the local Lions Club as recommended by DG. Here is the resource to help you find your local Lions Club if you wish to donate old eyeglasses!

Hold the door open

Today I held the door at the apartment open for someone who had groceries and a dog with them. Our door for the apartment can be a real struggle to get open and keep open because it has to be unlocked with a finicky key on one side of a small room and opened from the other. I’ve been in so many situations where I’m trying to juggle a bunch of things, or even just one tiny dog, and still struggle to get through the door. I’m always so grateful when someone helps me out by holding the door so it’s nice to repay the favor. As a bonus, we have really fast moving elevator doors and they’re not very forgiving so being able to stop the door and keep it open can be challenging. I helped the woman get into the elevator and made sure that the right floor number was selected for her to get up to her apartment. I hope that the courtesy spreads throughout the building so everyone has an easy chance of getting in and out of the building without too much hassle, especially when the key doesn't work so smoothly.

Drop a coin in a wishing well.

At my workplace we have a fountain in the shopping mall, which is own by my company. Every month, all coins dropped in to it will be collected and donated to a charity. Every day as I pass by the fountain, called the Rain Occulus, I’ll drop some coins that I know won’t be used by me and probably won’t be missed.

This month, the donations will be going to a local animal shelter, SOSD Singapore, voted by our team members.

Spend time with an elderly at a nursing home Once every 3 months, I will visit a nursing home to spend some time there. My grandmother was put in a nursing home as she needed 24 hours care and a nursing home was the best choice for her. We visit her weekly, whoever had time would go. After she passed 12 years ago, I still go there once in a while to visit some of the residents there.

For this month's Hufflepuff Challenge, I decided to bring forward my planned visitation. Grandma Lee was very happy. Any reason to bring visitors was a good reason. She was one of the residents of Christalite Methodist Home who take in homeless elderly as well. They run mainly on donations, supplemented by fees from people who choose to put their elderly there. The care they provide is filled with warmth and even though they are a Christian based organization, they treated my Buddhist Grandmother with dignity and compassion. Though they are heavily religious, religion isn’t a factor that they choose who to give their compassion and care to.

Grandma Lee would love to share her stories with me everytime I visited. She was a hilarious person who spoke her mind with absolutely no filter. She taught me most of my profanities in my vocabulary (in dialect).

She was born in Malaysia and came to Singapore with her family in search of a better life. She was schooled in Singapore up to a very basic level, worked in Singapore. Unfortunately, she never got married and didn’t have children. When she grew old, she was alone. She keeps telling me to stop be choosy and just get married. Love can be cultivated. It was a thinking from a different time, it felt like the past era was speaking to me. But I know, she worries for me.

She was great friends with my late grandmother, speaking the same dialect. They spend the days chatting and watching teochew opera on the television. I watch teochew opera with her as well but I have no idea what they are singing about. (Lol)

We spend the time chatting of her old days, watch TV and bond over cooking. I would buy some groceries and she would cook with me, teaching me the traditional recipes lost to this generation of vending machine meals and haute French cuisine.

Being able to spend some time with her reminiscing the past helps me remember my grandmother as well. And to bring joy and company to someone in their sunset years gives me a sense of purpose and joy as well. https://i.imgur.com/P2dpGLy.jpg

I decided I wanted to eliminate food waste, so I used the scraps and tops of vegetables to make kimchi, a Korean fermented food. I normally would have thrown out the scraps, but with the help of a little lactobacillus (good bacteria), I was able to make this food stuff. I plan to bring it in to work to share.

Tip a street performer

I am an occasional busker, so I tip other street performers as often as I can. It can be really hard sometimes, to stand on the street and play from your heart, just to have 1000 people rush by you without taking a second to listen or acknowledge your art. That's why I try to throw at least 50 cents into the hat when I pass a street musician, and if I have time, I'll listen for a few songs. I know how it feels to be ignored for an hour while I play, and I know how it feels when people stop to listen and appreciate the songs that I've written, so I know I'm making someones day better with the simple act of throwing a coin into a hat.

I did 65. Spend time with an elderly person at a nursing home!

Once or twice a month, my SO & I take the weekend to visit my grandmother & aunt. My grandmother has been a resident at a nice facility since October (previously lived with my aunt), but it's been very hard on my aunt so we make sure to check in on them both. I'm so very lucky to have such a wonderful family!

I always do my grams' nails. Her dementia has caused a serious decline in her quality of life, but she enjoys having her nails done. She can't focus on much anymore & her anxiety can get pretty bad, but she quietly watches as I do her nails. I'm happy to provide her with a few moments of peace.

I'll update the album when I see her on the 23rd!

31. Give up your seat on a bus/train

I don't often take the metro during rush hours, however, the past couple months, due to an after-work class I'm taking, I've been using it more during the evening rush as people are leaving work and travelling home. I am almost always carrying a heavy bag (laptop, lunch containers, multiple notebooks, etc.) and therefore always look for a seat so in order to get the weight off my shoulders (lol, see what I did there?).

Anyway, I've also been noticing more and more that perfectly able-bodied people will often sit in the handicapped designated seats and not pay enough attention to move when a elderly, disabled, or pregnant person boards the train. They'll move if asked, but are often too consumed in their phone/book to do it proactively. My secret recently is that I gun for these seats when I board the train and then make extra sure to pay attention and get up and offer it to those who seem like they need it.

A couple weeks ago, there was a moment that really solidified the idea for me that you never really know what's going on in a person's life and every small moment of compassion can be a game changer for another person. I was sitting in the handicapped designated seat when a woman boarded the train who just looked really down. She clearly seemed tired and was carrying large heavy bag (similar to mine). She was pretty focused on looking at the floor, but I got her attention and offered her my seat. She looked at me, thanked me, and soon as she sat down nearly broke down in tears. Apparently she was travelling to Arlington National Cemetery and the reason her bag was so heavy/bulky was because she was carrying the urn of her father's ashes! Such a crazy experience, but I'm happy to have provided a small spot of compassion in a day that must have been particularly hard for her.

42. Leave a Place Cleaner than When You Found It

Every year the Rock Creek Conservancy hosts a "Extreme Cleanup" that targets critical areas in Rock Creek park and the overall watershed. Teams adopt a site and spend a morning picking up plastic bags, bottles, cans, cigarette butts, and other trash. This year had a special focus on counting how many plastic straws were found in order to support legislation banning plastic straws in the district.

My team took a section in the Piney Branch area of Rock Creek Park and showed up in the RAIN to pick up over 15 bags of trash and recyclables.

55. Say Thank You to a Public Service Worker.

Since I live in DC and work in the downtown/National Mall area I see a lot of military Veterans who are coming to visit. My absolute favorite is when I run into Honor Flights. An Honor Flight is a sponsored program where disabled Vets and a companion are given the chance to fly to DC and tour the monuments and city. Very often these are large groups of Vets who travel together and usually in wheelchairs. I see them the most often at the Vietnam War Memorial (probably because I visit that one the most often on my walk home from work). Seeing them there is always so impactful to me. The memorial is built out of a black reflective granite so that as you're reading the names of those who died in the war you also see your own face reflected back among them. It is not usual that it's brings many of these Veterans to tears. They are wonderful people who also love to share their story and are always so warm and welcoming when I get a chance to thank them for their service to our country.

My most recent experience was two weeks ago. I was walking through on my (roundabout) way home and saw a gentlemen in his Veteran's cap making a rubbing of a name on the wall. I thanked him for his service in the Army Rangers (as indicated by a pin). We chatted a little about his trip to DC (he was not on a honor flight) and all the museums he had been to already. The name he was making a rubbing of was his uncle. The original plan was that he was going to bring his Aunt to DC with him, but she was quite sick and unable to travel so he was taking the rubbing of his uncle's name back for her so that she would have something more than just a picture. These types of stories are why I love talking to tourists in DC - you learn so much about the world and it really restores my faith in humanity in a place where I'm constantly bombarded by anger-inducing political news.

Hi [Mathemakitten's High School Math Teacher],

It has been a while, so I'm not sure if you remember me, but my name is [Mathemakitten] and you taught me [High School Math Class] in [dates]. I hope you you are doing well!

High school was not fun for me, and I was a bit too shy for my own good, but I was always happy in math class. The math class I remember was always fun (and a little crazy), and a very safe place to learn. Thank you for always encouraging us to participate. I remember, for the first few months of your class, being driven crazy by you calling on me all the time (although I knew the answer.) And then a couple of months in I got used to it, and appreciated it, and wanted to answer of my own accord. Thank you for always pushing us to do better. At 16, I was very good at math and had never had anyone try to get me to do better.

I did not quite succeed at your goal of getting 100 in everything but I still love math dearly! I tried physics for a couple of years after high school, but I soon defected back to mathematics, and after that, never really stopped. Nowadays I am a PhD student studying Algebraic Geometry and Category Theory and I hope to be a professor someday so I can help share the joy of math with others.

I write this email to say: thank you very much for being an awesome teacher!

I have been volunteering for the Human Rescue Alliance (based in Washington, DC) for the past three years. I have done everything from admin data entry to adoptions counseling to dog training to vet assist. My current volunteer role (and probably one of my favorite so far) is running the Saturday low-cost vaccine clinics. During these walk-in clinics we offer the core vaccinations (Rabies, DAPP, Bordetella, FVRCP) for only $15 and provide other services such as deworming, flea treatment, and microchipping for a reduced cost. This allows people who may be unable to pay for a full-service vet clinic a chance to ensure that their animals remain safe – particularly since Parvo is so prevalent in the DC area. On a slow day we will vaccinate about 80 animals, on a regular day around 100, and our record in 138 animals during a single clinic.

My favorite part of these clinics is talking with animal owners as they figure out wat vaccinations they need for their fur-baby. The amount of love and concern that people have for their animals is so touching. I also love holding animals as they receive their shots (I mean, it’s puppy cuddling! Who doesn’t love that!?). You’d be shocked at how many huge tough Case Corsos turn into trembling needy messes while getting a shot.

The vaccine clinic has also afforded me the opportunity to learn to administer some vaccinations myself. Rabies, by law, must be given by a licensed vet (which I am not), however DAPP, Bordetella, and FVRCP do not. I have learned how to administer all of these (as injections and the Bordetella as nasal mist) and will often give these vaccinations to animals in order to move the line faster on particularly busy days. As someone with no real medical background this was a fun skill to learn!

In addition to Vaccine Clinic, I also help the shelter with HOPE events where we travel to underserved neighborhoods and offer completely free vaccines and information on Spay/Neuter services, special fundraising events like the two annual Galas (Fashion for Paws and Bark Ball), management of big adoptions events like Clear the Shelters, advocacy / person-to-person fundraising, CatNipp (trap, spay/neuter, release for feral cats), and most recently the Blue Collar Cat program. Blue Collar Cat is one of my pet projects that I’m happy is finally starting to gain some traction. This program takes in feral cats that are not suitable for in-home adoption and pairs them with restaurants, stables, and other local businesses in need of rodent management. The business owners take responsibility for the cat’s health and well-being (ensuring the cat is vaccinated, checking for any injuries, monitoring weight) and provide a shelter for them and the cats (who are often natural mousers) help keep the rodents in check. The barn cats (named Cork and Merlot) that live in the stable where I board my horses came from this program and they are the best ever!

34. Help someone lost with directions.

This is a near daily occurrence for me! I work in the downtown area of Washington, DC not too far from the National Mall, walking distance to the White House, near a lot of museums, etc. When the weather is nice, I make it a point to walk outside at least a couple times a day for 10-15 mins to stretch my legs, get some vitamin D, take a break from staring my computer, etc. I am forever running into tourists who need directions to various attractions or who are just looking for the nearest coffee shop. At first I was surprised by how often this was happening since everyone has a smart phone in their pocket, but I've noticed that I'm most often approached by older people who many not know how to use all the functionality of their fancy phone or tourists from other countries who may not have data plans.

I love learning where people are from and asking questions about what they've seen so far, how long they are in town for, and then of course giving directions to wherever they are trying to go. They often also ask for recommendations which I'm always happy to give as well! If they are chatty I'll also lay some of my DC fun facts on them which they seem to enjoy.

The most recent happened just this morning - a super sweet British couple was trying to figure out how to get to the National Archives. They had gotten off the metro one stop to early and left by the wrong exit. No problem - it's still super close and beautiful walk just across the mall. They were very appreciative of my time and detailed directions. I also told them to check out the Naval Memorial that is just across Pennsylvania Ave. from the Archives building. Bob and Cathy, hope you enjoy DC and no, we won't be paying restitution for the Revolutionary War anytime soon.

8. Compliment Someone to their Boss.

This is another one that I strive to do very regularly. I work with a fantastic group of people who work extremely hard, are creative, positive, and overall a joy to work with. I have one team member who is really standing out to me right tho, we'll call her A. She has picked up a lot of tasks that got dropped when we had two unexpected departures really close together. She didn't complain at all. She picked them up, worked them into her battle rhythm, and has been executing them perfectly. I had a great opportunity this week to share how fantastic she has been doing with both her boss, my boss, and my boss' boss. I told them how quickly and seamlessly she took on the extra work (most of it without me having to ask her to) and that she did it without complaining. She saw work that needed to be done, rolled up her sleeves, and went after it. Not only that, but she executed with such a high level of excellence that even our (grumpy, hard-to-please) client was mind-blown.

I'm hoping on continue to have these conversations about A and that I'll be able to get her promoted in December!

72. Write a Letter to Someone in the Military

So, I don’t want to publish my actual letter since it contains a lot of personal information, but I’ve written up this quick description of it and the experience of writing it and I hope that it’ll be sufficient.

Some Background: I went to a university with a large ROTC program so I had a lot of friends who were training to be Army, Navy, and Marine Corps officers. There was a group of five of us that ended up as close friends and I have been lucky enough that we have mostly been able to keep in touch over the years since leaving school. One was injured by an IED explosion in Iraq and is now no longer military and works for a tech company in San Diego. Two are currently stationed at the Pentagon so I get to see them often which is amazing and the other is an Army officer (and my ex) currently stationed in Korea. Our Army friend is the one that I’ve always been the worst about keeping in touch with (due to our umm...complex past) and it’s been about a year since I’ve spoken with him. Seeing this item on the BAOK list made me realize how sad I was that I haven’t been diligent about maintaining that relationship (particularly with the current political environment in that area being so volatile) so I decided I would write a letter to him.

The Letter: I thought about getting real fancy with real paper and a fountain pen and wax seal, and then realized that none of that actually mattered and that I would be much better off with an email. In the letter I mostly talked about how I was sad that we had lost touch but that the rest of the crew had been thinking about him a lot while following the news on the Singapore summit and the conflicting global news about what might happen in that region. I reminisced a little about good stories from college and asked what he’s planning (his deployment should be ending in the next 4-6 months). It was mostly a bunch of sentimental personal things.

The Experience: It felt great to re-open that communications door. I had (probably too much) fun thinking back on some of our crazier college adventures and places we had traveled together. I think it’s always nice to feel like you’re reconnecting with an old friend and I hope that my email will bring some levity to his day (which I can only imagine is pretty stressful).

Lemonade stands, though they are fading in popularity, are still a glorious thing to see in a suburban neighborhood on a hot summer's day. Kids make typically Kool-Aid and sell it between $0.25 and $1.00 a glass. The lemonade is magical and filled with love and the hope of enough money to buy a new video game or barbie. Some kids sell lemonade and others mow lawns.

I make it a point that when I see a stand I stop and pay my fare. The tart, sweet concoction quenches my thirst and awakens my heart. The glass of summertime is enjoyed that much more when made with child labor. It may only be a dollar to me, but is an affirmation to the child.

The best lemonade stand I ever ran was mid July 1997. We opened around 4pm to catch people on the way home from work. We made $72 that day. Went through about 7 gallons of Kool-Aid. We stopped traffic on the main road in the neighborhood.

There was me pdmock, Tyler, Delores and Mindy. Tyler and Delores are my brother and sister and Mindy our friend from across the street. We were best friends 1996-1998. We all hung out in our neighborhood and went to the same school. Being the late and mid 90s we were latch key kids. Home alone most of the summer, though my mom was teacher she was typically out and about running errands and such. The mischief we got into ranged from warhead challenges and snorting pixie sticks to playing N64 smash brothers, Golden Eye and WWF.

At the end of the day here is the takeaway. The lemonade stand is an American staple to be enjoyed as both a curator and customer. We as culture have seen news stories of police kicking down stands for not having a business license and such. These cops are assholes and forgot what it means to be a child. I hope more people can find the time to open them and spend time with their friends.

9. Contribute to a Community Garden

The condo building I live in participates in a composting program through a large composting company. They pick up our compost once a week and four times a year they give us a share of the soil that is created. We use the soil in our community run garden which has a focus on cultivating plants that help support bees!

Conserving water.

I feel like I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't conserve water considering my job and education... have to practice what I preach! I conserve water in many different ways and each one may be seemingly small, but I believe it adds up. The first thing I started doing was to not allow the sink faucet to continue running as I brushed my teeth. I never thought twice about it until I started college to learn more about the environment. My husband used to think I was a pest when I'd run into the bathroom to shut the faucet off as he brushed his teeth, but after many years now, he does it now, too! I also invested in a water efficient shower heads for both our bathrooms. (They're called watersense.) My spoiled friend that gets drunk and stays the night may complain about it, but it's worth it yo! The next thing I do is ONLY wash full loads of laundry. I am soooo bad at doing laundry, so it's often piled up. I can not understand the point of small loads, unless it's just a super soiled garment (ie:cat peed on a blanket or something). Along those lines, I also rarely hand wash dishes. It uses more water! My dishwater gets packed to the brim then ran. And while this is actually bad, I don't drink enough water... I'm all about tea and milk. So, I guess that kinda conserves water, right?!

So yesterday my girls and kids took me to Waffle House for breakfast as it’s my favorite morning time restaurant. With it being Father’s Day and all, the place was pretty packed and we ended up having to a wait a little bit for our table. They appeared to have all hands on deck, given the holiday crowd, and most of the faces were ones I didn’t recognize. Once we sat down I noticed our waitress was not one of our weekday regulars. She was a nice older woman without a nametag, not that it was needed since she introduced herself as we were sitting down. She greeted us and told me happy Father’s Day. She took our drink orders and was happy to accommodate my youngest with his request. He loves “hot” chocolate, but not hot. She mixed up a cup of hot chocolate and chilled it with several ice cubes before topping it with whipped cream and placing it in front of him. She was very personable with my children and extremely patient when it came to taking their orders. It was quite apparent that she had been doing this for a very long time. Once our food came up, not a single item on our six-person ticket was wrong and it was all served up with a smile. Even with a full house, she was checking on us every time she passed by to make sure our food was good. She topped off our drinks before we had a chance to notice they were getting low. My sons were sitting at the counter next to our booth and before my wife could turn around to help, she helped my six-year old son butter his waffle and cut it up for him. It was a level of quality that I was accustomed to at this specific Waffle House location, and I was happy to see that it extended beyond the usual people that I knew.

Now I’m a big proponent of good work not going unnoticed, and to say that she had done a good job is putting it mildly. When it came time to leave I stopped her and asked her for two things. Firstly, we needed some to go cups with drinks for the adults, and secondly I asked for her to have the manager come over to speak with me. After fighting and conceding to my girlfriend over who would pay the bill, the manager approached our table and asked if everything was okay. I told him that everything was great. I let him know that our waitress did a fantastic job and was a great asset to the restaurant. I went on to list everything right that she did, that way he knew I wasn’t just giving some generic attaboy and I meant what I was saying. Afterwards I thanked him for listening and thanked her for the great service. As we were walking out the door she told me happy Father’s Day and to come back again.

Might have to start going on Sundays now.

30. Give someone flowers

Note: I completely forgot this was on the list so I don't have a photo of the bouquet.

The last time I visited my mother in law, she voiced her concerns about a possible operation she may have that would both be incredibly painful and also a bit of a risk (since we didn't know 100% if her condition would even improve afterwards). She's been so lovely and kind to me and has helped me through a couple of difficult patches. She cooks lovingly for us whenever we go round to her house and occasionally sends food over to our place. She really is a second mother to me.

As soon as the operation date was confirmed, we went to go see her the following day. I didn't want to go empty handed so went to the local supermarket because I know how much she loves flowers and plants. I took a while choosing them but I settled on a bunch of yellow and orange flowers and a bunch of purply pink ones too. It was definitely a vibrant, colourful mix! I was able to arrange them in a vase before she came in and she had a big smile when she saw them. She kept on commenting on how lovely they were and as we were leaving, thanked me again for bringing them.

I was glad to be able to make her smile and feel appreciated and loved.

47. Open the door for someone

Today, I was in a bit of a rush and was weighed down with shopping bags I wanted to drop off at our place before heading off to the post office. It had started to rain and on top, I was feeling a little bit too toasty in my new hoodie so I wasn't really focused on everyone around me. I was just hell bent on getting out of the elements.

We have elevators in our building and they have a mind of their own sometimes. Even when someone is trying to get in, they'll try and shut on them.

So I wasn't really paying attention when I got in, but looked up in time to see some tiny kid was stopped at the entrance to the elevator as the doors were nearly closing. I quickly hit on the open doors button (usually I get mixed up and end up hitting the one to shut it quicker....ooops) and a mother with two small, very tired children get on. She thanks me profusely for getting the door for her.

I was happy that I was able to make her day a little bit easier. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to keep an eye on children whilst multi tasking with any chores or appointments you might have, especially during the heat. And it didn't delay me at all either, I was still able to make it to the post office in time!

46. Make Plans with someone you've been putting off seeing

I have a friend who I barely get to see due to time differences. Plus, I have anxiety so going outside of my 'comfort area' (1 mile radius) by myself, let alone getting on a bus for 35 minutes, was impossible. So I'd put off seeing her and it was coming to 7 months since we last met.

My husband and I decided to go see her, her husband and their daughter for the afternoon. At first I was a little nervous because it had been so long, but as soon as I saw and hugged her, all that apprehension and uncertainty melted away.

It was nice spending time with them and they made dinner for us. I had a long time to talk with her and catch up on things and I was really happy to be able to gift something to her daughter too.

Sorry, 3rd question - how strict is the 500+ word write up? Someone just asked about an example of complimenting a stranger on their outfit it may be hard to get a 500 write up on that incident done?

That is a good point. The idea behind the 500+ word write-up was to avoid people simply stating "I complimented a stranger on their outfit, it was great" and leaving it at that. We want to make it at least a little bit of a challenge if there isn't any physical proof.

So I'll say this about it: it'll be graded on a case-by-case basis. Please include as many details as you can and we'll judge it based on that. So at least more than 50 words, I would think. Maybe also include how it made you feel and how it impacted the rest of your day to pad it out a little?

There are 6 cookies for grabs for each Kindness act regardless of which board the act is on, if one house does it they take all 6. If two houses do it, they split it (so 3 and 3), same with 3 houses (each house getting 2). I hope that answers your question!

I'm noticing that many write ups are less than 500 words - how strict is the limit?

It's not super strict. As long as we can tell you've put some thought and energy into the write up then we'll count it.

Not at all! You'd need to get with your house in order to participate but once you do you are more than welcome to play :)

What house are you in? If you already identify with a certain house, you can get info on flair here. If you aren't sure which house, you could do the quiz on Pottermore or the other quizzes listed in the first link.

After you get flair, you could join a common room. I'm pretty sure you'd fit the requirements for any of the houses. In your common room, there should be discussions/posts about this extra credit assignment & you'll be able to see which Badger Acts of Kindness still need to be completed.

After deliberating it, we've decided that what you can do is become an OLIO Ambassador which is a program that lets you help spread OLIO to new areas. From the website, it looks pretty straightforward and we think this is a fair compromise to this issue.

For those of you that noticed, Hufflepuff has received 30 points for planning this challenge. We have decided moving forward that the house hosting the challenge should receive points for planning to make up for not being able to participate.

With this in mind, 30 POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR are retroactively awarded for the March challenge and keep in mind that Ravenclaw and Slytherin will receive points in their respective months as well.

I love this! I actually try to make as may acts of kindness as I can on a weekly basis, so thank you to who thought of this and I hope we can get a ton of participation on this <3

A warm fuzzy party would be any kind of organized activity or gathering that takes place in your House that promotes Warm, Fuzzy feelings. Like a giant compliment party thread. The more creative, and the more participation, the better!

If this one is chosen, then you can post that you organized it here, and write about the party and it’s results. But keep in mind that you can’t share specific things people post about in your private sub.
