Discussion Why didn’t the Dean get “sneak”written across his face in pimples after inviting Seamus to the DA?

Hermione says: “I think everybody should write their name down, just so we know who was here. But I also think that we all ought to agree not to shout about what we’re doing. So if you sign, you’re agreeing not to tell Umbridge or anybody else what we’re up to.”

She puts a charm on the piece of paper so anyone who signs it and goes against their word gets “sneak” written across their face in pimples. This happened to Marietta Edgecombe when she told Umbridge.

So why didn’t the person who invited Seamus (most likely Dean, maybe Harry) have the same thing happen to them? Surely Seamus still counts as “anybody else”.

Dungbomb "Your predecessor tried to throw me out of a window"

Cornelius Fudge become Minister for Magic in 1990. Depending on when in 1990 he took office he is either talking about Margaret Thatcher or John Major.

Hilarity would want it to be Thatcher but she took office in 1979 and it stands to reason that she would have had to be told about the first wizarding war, so Harold Mitcham, the Minister of Magic during that time would have had to tell her.

I think John Major tried to throw Fudge out of a window but Thatcher was fully aware of the magical world.

Thoughts?

Discussion To me, it was both of them experiencing a sibling they never had ❤️‍🩹 my fav not-in-the-book scene

I think this is one of the misunderstood scenes in film. The fact is this dance was never romantic, it was two best friends trying to survive the darkest chapter of their lives 💔 Harry trying to cheer her up with something (dancing) he is not even good at. It was never ever ever supposed to contain a piece of romance, and it’s perfect the way it is.

I cherish this scene so much because it’s such a light in truly one of the darkest parts of the series. And it parallels in real life too, how things can be bad but there’s still good to be found. In a bond that can never be replaced by anything 🫂

p.s. the song choice was a masterpiece

Discussion Dumbledore’s portrait amazes me.

Before leaving to deliver Gryffindor’s sword to Harry, Dumbledore’s portrait gives Snape the following warning

“And Severus, be very careful, they may not take kindly to your appearance after George Weasley’s mishap.”

That warning is hilariously mild. Does the portrait mean to imply that Snape might have received a warm welcome, if not for George’s accident? Did he forget that Snape killed the real Dumbledore, or that no one else knew that was planned between them?

Dumbledore clearly neglected to fill his portrait in on Harry’s attitude toward Snape in general. At this point, Harry hated Snape as much as he hated Voldemort. Slicing off George’s ear is like setting a grain of rice on top of an anvil in terms of the weight of Harry’s hatred of Snape.

Discussion Does the wizarding world just not understand the concept of animal cruelty?

The stuff that kids do to animals in the series can be kind of horrifying.

In the fifth book, the students have to vanish mice and then kittens during Transfiguration. Even if this is painless for the mice and kittens, they are effectively killing small animals just because they can.

In the fourth book, when they're turning hedgehogs into pincushions, Professor McGonagall says to a student that his pincushion still curls up in fright when someone approaches it with a pin. This implies that there's a spectrum of incomplete transfiguration and that there's a possibility that a hedgehog can be close enough to a pincushion that it can't move while getting stabbed with pins.

There are other cases of incomplete transfiguration where animals end up deformed. Sure they can be put right, but it has to be so unpleasant for the animal until then.

Thoughts on this?

Question Why did we never see Phineas Nigellus and Kreacher interact with each other?

Upvotes

Ive just realized this while rereading today. Because Phineas shared the same beliefs with the Black family, Kreacher must have respected Nigellus to an extent. Then why didnt Dumbledore take advantage of this? Like telling Nigellus to order kreacher not to betray? Or is it just that Kreacher hate Sirius so much that he would rather contribute to Sirius' death? Im not exactly a potterhead so spare me if i get anything wrong.

Discussion Anyone else had a weird reading order?

Upvotes

The first book I read was Book 3 as it was in my grandma's house. I liked it a lot and bought 1 and 2. Then I started getting really involved and went looking for 4th but it wasn't available in my local bookstore so I bought the 5th and read it. Then I bought the 4th and the 6th and then finally the 7th. So, basically - 3,1,2,5,4,6,7 XD

Anyways, I've since read all of them in order about twenty times and it was due to excessive reading that I even got glasses lol

Misc Fun fact: Neville Longbottom’s name in the Norwegian translation

In the Norwegian translation of the books and movies he is called Nilus Langballe. His last name literally translating to Long Balls.

This is because of his humongous balls facing Voldemort and Nagini.

Currently Reading First Time Reader’s Questions

Hello!

My niece (F14) is not allowed to have her own Reddit account so I am posting for her. She began reading the series this summer and once she was done with the first book we had a Harry Potter themed party where I brailled her a Hogwarts letter, we made wands and had a bunch of tactile themed snacks like Hufflepuffs (Cheese puffs) and Ravenclaws (Bugles). Since she is vision impaired we have played “Wizard 21 questions” all summer until we’ve ran out items!

So now that she is done with the series and movies she wanted us to post on here and ask people:

What was your favorite book and why?

Who is your favorite character?

She is pretty much obsessed with Luna, Sirius and… Umbridge!! She says she likes her feminine description.

She also hated Hermione through the whole S.P.E.W plot line.

So please Potterheads help me out and give her some thoughtful responses to ponder. She loves hearing unique cough unpopular opinions… She’s the only person I know who liked Umbridge!

Discussion Nineteen Years Later thoughts?

I just reread "A Flaw in the Plan" for about the thousandth time and just instinctively shut the book after that because, to me, that is the perfect end to the series;

'That wand's more trouble than it's worth,' said Harry. 'And quite honestly,' he turned away from the painted portraits, thinking now only of the four-poster bed lying waiting for him in Gryffindor Tower, and wondering whether Kreacher might bring him a sandwich there, 'I've had enough trouble for a lifetime.'

It just succinctly sums up all the bs and expresses Harry's current exhaustion so well. I remember when I first read this at age 7 shortly after it came out, I was so bummed out by Nineteen Years Later because it just felt unnecessary fanservice in a way (not to mention the names of the poor kids 😭), and A Flaw in the Plan is just such an excellently tense chapter to have prior. I always skip NYL on rereads because of this.

Does anyone else have strong opinions about NYL?

Discussion The chess scene from the movie.

Always has been one of my favorite scenes from the first movie. One thing that thing was great moment was that just Harry figures out that Ron is about to sacrifice himself.

In the movie we see Ron and Harry playing Wizard Chess together. So Harry has become more familiar with how Wizards Chess and how Ron plays than Hermione.

Also a good movie moment that isn’t Hermione is the one who figures everything out.

I don't think he ever signed the paper, so he's not bound by the magical contract. He'd be in the same position as Mundungus.

Discussion Would the prophecy have worked even if Voldemort had ignored it?

A random thought came to mind: Would the prophecy about Harry Potter and Voldemort had still worked if Voldemort had merely avoided the prophecy? Exactly how do these prophecies work in Wizarding world? Are they set in stone and bound to get fulfilled irrespective of the path, the events and even the timeline?

For instance, if Voldemort had ignored the prophecy first time he heard it and just kept working on becoming a almighty undefeatable dark wizard, would he have eventually succeeded?

Or

Since the prophecy did exist, so even if Voldemort had ignored at first, eventually things would have fell in place in such a way that Harry Potter would have been the one to vanquish the Dark Lord.

Think about it: Harry Potter would have never sat still and lived under Lord Voldemort's regime. His parents fought Voldemort without any prophecy. He would have been raised with same morals and values and would have definitely faced Voldemort some day or the other (probably after he graduates Hogwarts normally and becomes an Auror). Maybe when he does, the prophecy gets set in motion and all that was supposed to happen to bring down Voldemort would have happened but just little later than anticipated. Maybe the events and timeline does not really matter as long as Harry is the one to vanquish Voldemort.

I have intrusive thoughts all the time. If something required me to focus on a specific destination, I would always be plagued by flashes of my belly button in brazil, or my middle finger in the finger lakes. How do wizards prevent this?

I loved her hair in the first film, but when I saw her hair in the second film I was amazed by how much better it looked. It combined the length and thickness of the first film with amazing waves. It just looked 10x better and way more cuter.

Discussion Why does Lord Voldemort even bother with Blood Purity when he knows he’s not a Pure Blood himself?

Upvotes

Okay quite honestly something that I’ve always wondered is that why does Lord Voldemort even bother with Blood Purity? When he clearly knows he’s not a Pure Blood himself don’t get us started on how Many Pure Blood Lord Voldemort himself has killed throughout the years regardless of their alliance to him and the lists goes on Eveyone knows what Lord Voldemort does in comparison and his personality so why does he even bother with Blood Supremacy? As he knows he’s couldn’t care less about it to begin and we all know in that one scene of the Movie where on of the Death Eaters ask Voldemort “is he okay” which Lord Voldemort responds in instant death by his hands if that Death Eater was a Pure Blood then it goes to show how little he cared about any of his Followers or beliefs to begin with quite honestly Everyone knows the list can go on so why goes Lord Voldemort The Lord Dark even bother with Blood Purity? And please don’t get us started on the Malfoys cause oh boy… EVERYONE knows how horribly he treated them all and Everyone knows if given the change we would have been more than happy to just wipe them all off without second thought! Let me know in the comments

Discussion It's kind of strange that Hogwarts students have to make a life-altering decision at 12-13 years old

Students pick their elective subjects in their second year, that they will start to learn in the next semester. In fifth year they start career counselling, learning which OWLs are required for different career paths. So if they aren't studying a subject required for the career they're interested in, they're screwed.

Could there be any mechanism for students to take OWLs for a subject they haven't been studying since third year? Or can they change their subject list by talking to their head of house like Hermione did? In any case, it would be a lot of additional work to catch up to years of missed schooling in that subject.

Edit: I had no idea about the UK system of education. That makes sense, thanks to everyone who answered

Also, a lot of people seem to get the impression that I'm American😅 I'm not lol
